Polytropic gas modelling at kinetic and macroscopic levels

In this paper, we consider the kinetic model of continuous type describing a polyatomic gas in two different settings corresponding to a different choice of the functional space used to define macroscopic quantities. Such a model introduces a single continuous variable supposed to capture all the phenomena related to the more complex structure of a molecule having more than one atom, such as internal degrees of freedom in a collision. In particular, we provide a direct comparison of these two settings, and show their equivalence after the distribution function is rescaled and the cross section is reformulated. We then focus on the kinetic model for which the rigorous existence and uniqueness result in the space homogeneous case is recently proven. Using the cross section proposed in that analysis together with the maximum entropy principle, we establish macroscopic models of six and fourteen fields. In the case of six moments, we calculate the exact, nonlinear, production term and prove its total agreement with extended thermodynamics, as it satisfies the entropy residual inequality on the whole range of model validity. Moreover, for the fourteen moments model, we provide new expressions for relaxation times and transport coefficients in a linearized setting, that yield both matching with the experimental data for dependence of the shear viscosity upon temperature and a satisfactory agreement with the theoretical value of the Prandtl number, on the room temperature range when only translational and rotational modes of molecules are taken into account, as much as on higher temperatures when vibrational modes appear as well.

On existence and uniqueness to homogeneous Boltzmann flows of monatomic gas mixtures

We solve the Cauchy problem for the full non-linear homogeneous Boltzmann system of equations describing multi-component monatomic gas mixtures for binary interactions in three dimensions. More precisely, we show existence and uniqueness of the vector value solution by means of an existence theorem for ODE systems in Banach spaces under the transition probability rates assumption corresponding to hard potentials rates in the interval $(0,1]$, with an angular section modeled by an integrable function of the angular transition rates modeling binary scattering effects. The initial data for the vector valued solutions needs to be a vector of non-negative measures with finite total number density, momentum and strictly positive energy, as well as to have a finite $L^1_{k_*}(\mathbb{R}^3)$-integrability property corresponding to a sum across each species of $k_*$-polynomial weighted norms depending on the corresponding mass fraction parameter for each species as much as on the intermolecular potential rates, referred as to the scalar polynomial moment of order $k_*$. The existence and uniqueness rigorous results rely on a new angular averaging lemma adjusted to vector values solution that yield a Povzner estimate with constants that decay with the order of the corresponding dimensionless scalar polynomial moment. In addition, such initial data yields global generation of such scalar polynomial moments at any order as well as their summability of moments to obtain estimates for corresponding scalar exponentially decaying high energy tails, referred as to scalar exponential moments associated to the system solution. Such scalar polynomial and exponential moments propagate as well.

On the Cauchy problem for Boltzmann equation modelling a polyatomic gas

In the present manuscript we consider the Boltzmann equation that models a polyatomic gas by introducing one additional continuous variable, referred to as microscopic internal energy. We establish existence and uniqueness theory in the space homogeneous setting for the full non-linear case, under an extended Grad assumption on transition probability rate, that comprises hard potentials for both the relative speed and internal energy with the rate in the interval $(0,2]$, which is multiplied by an integrable angular part and integrable partition functions. The Cauchy problem is resolved by means of an abstract ODE theory in Banach spaces, for an initial data with finite and strictly positive gas mass and energy, finite momentum, and additionally finite $k_*$ polynomial moment, with $k_*$ depending on the rate of the transition probability and the structure of a polyatomic molecule or its internal degrees of freedom. Moreover, we prove that polynomially and exponentially weighted Banach space norms associated to the solution are both generated and propagated uniformly in time.

Propagation of $L^p_β$-norm, $ 1<p\le \infty$, for the system of Boltzmann equations for monatomic gas mixtures

With the existence and uniqueness of a vector value solution for the full non-linear homogeneous Boltzmann system of equations describing multi-component monatomic gas mixtures for binary interactions proved [8], we present in this manuscript several properties for such a solution. We start by proving the gain of integrability of the gain term of the multispecies collision operator, extending the work done previously for the single species case [3]. In addition, we study the integrability properties of the multispecies collision operator as a bilinear form, revisiting and expanding the work done for a single gas [2]. With these estimates, together with a control by below for the loss term of the collision operator as in [8], we develop the propagation for the polynomially and exponentially $β$-weighted $L^p_β$-norms for the vector value solution. Finally, we extend such $L^p_β$-norms propagation property to $p=\infty$.

Polyatomic gases with dynamic pressure: Maximum entropy principle and shock structure

This paper is concerned with the analysis of polyatomic gases within the framework of kinetic theory. Internal degrees of freedom are modeled using a single continuous variable corresponding to the molecular internal energy. Non-equilibrium velocity distribution function, compatible with macroscopic field variables, is constructed using the maximum entropy principle. A proper collision cross section is constructed which obeys the micro-reversibility requirement. The source term and entropy production rate are determined in the form which generalizes the results obtained within the framework of extended thermodynamics. They can be adapted to appropriate physical situations due to the presence of parameters. They are also compared with the results obtained using BGK approximation. For the proposed model the shock structure problem is thoroughly analyzed.
