The Waldschmidt constant for squarefree monomial ideals

Given a squarefree monomial ideal $I \subseteq R =k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$, we show that $\widehatα(I)$, the Waldschmidt constant of $I$, can be expressed as the optimal solution to a linear program constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. By applying results from fractional graph theory, we can then express $\widehatα(I)$ in terms of the fractional chromatic number of a hypergraph also constructed from the primary decomposition of $I$. Moreover, expressing $\widehatα(I)$ as the solution to a linear program enables us to prove a Chudnovsky-like lower bound on $\widehatα(I)$, thus verifying a conjecture of Cooper-Embree-Hà-Hoefel for monomial ideals in the squarefree case. As an application, we compute the Waldschmidt constant and the resurgence for some families of squarefree monomial ideals. For example, we determine both constants for unions of general linear subspaces of $\mathbb{P}^n$ with few components compared to $n$, and we find the Waldschmidt constant for the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a uniform matroid.

Containment problem for points on a reducible conic in $\mathbb{P}^2$

Given an ideal $I$ in a Noetherian ring, one can ask the containment question: for which $m$ and $r$ is the symbolic power $I^{(m)}$ contained in the ordinary power $I^r$? C. Bocci and B. Harbourne study the containment question in a geometric setting, where the ideal $I$ is in a polynomial ring over a field. Like them, we will consider special geometric constructs. In particular, we obtain a complete solution in two extreme cases of ideals of points on a pair of lines in $\mathbb{P}^2$; in one case, the number of points on each line is the same, while in the other all the points but one are on one of the lines.

On the Fattening of Lines in $\mathbf{P}^3$

We follow the lead of Bocci and Chiantini and show how differences in the invariant alpha can be used to classify certain classes of subschemes of P^3. Specifically, we will seek to classify arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 subschemes of P^3 in the manner Bocci and Chiantini classified points in P^2. The first section will seek to motivate our consideration of the invariant alpha by relating it to the Hilbert function and gamma, following the work of Bocci and Chiantini, and Dumnicki, et. al. The second section will contain our results classifying arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 subschemes of P^3. This work is adapted from the author's Ph.D. dissertation.
