Drinfeld discriminant function and Fourier expansion of harmonic cochains

Let F∞=Fq( ⁣(1/T) ⁣)F_\infty=\mathbb{F}_q(\!(1/T)\!) be the completion of Fq(T)\mathbb{F}_q(T) at 1/T1/T. We develop a theory of Fourier expansions for harmonic cochains on the edges of the Bruhat-Tits building of PGLr(F∞)\mathrm{PGL}_r(F_\infty), r≥2r\geq 2, generalizing an earlier construction of Gekeler for r=2r=2. We then apply this theory to study modular units on the Drinfeld symmetric space ΩrΩ^r over F∞F_\infty, and the cuspidal divisor groups of Satake compactifications of certain Drinfeld modular varieties. In particular, we obtain a higher dimensional analogue of a result of Ogg for classical modular curves X0(p)X_0(p) of prime level.

The growth of the discriminant of the endomorphism ring of the reduction of a rank 2 generic Drinfeld module

Let ψ:A→F{τ}ψ: A \to F\{τ\} be a Drinfeld AA-module over FF of rank 2 and without complex multiplication, where A=Fq[T]A = {\mathbb{F}}_q[T], F=Fq(T)F = {\mathbb{F}}_q(T), and qq is an odd prime power. For a prime p=pA\mathfrak{p} = p A of AA of good reduction for ψψ and with residue field Fp{\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}, we study the growth of the absolute value ∣Δp∣|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}| of the discriminant of the Fp{\mathbb{F}}_{\mathfrak{p}}-endomorphism ring of the reduction of ψψ modulo p\mathfrak{p}. We prove that for all p\mathfrak{p}, ∣Δp∣|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}| grows with ∣p∣|p|. Moreover, we prove that for a density 1 of primes p\mathfrak{p}, ∣Δp∣|Δ_{\mathfrak{p}}| is as close as possible to its upper bound ∣ap2−4μpp∣|a_{\mathfrak{p}}^2 - 4 μ_{\mathfrak{p}}p|, where X2+apX+μpp∈A[X]X^2+a_{\mathfrak{p}}X+μ_{\mathfrak{p}} p \in A[X] is the characteristic polynomial of τdeg pτ^{\text{deg} \ p}.

Graph Laplacians, component groups and Drinfeld modular curves

Let p\frak{p} be a prime ideal of Fq[T]\mathbb{F}_q[T]. Let J0(p)J_0(\frak{p}) be the Jacobian variety of the Drinfeld modular curve X0(p)X_0(\frak{p}). Let ΦΦ be the component group of J0(p)J_0(\frak{p}) at the place 1/T1/T. We use graph Laplacians to estimate the order of ΦΦ as deg(p)\mathrm{deg}(\frak{p}) goes to infinity. This estimate implies that ΦΦ is not annihilated by the Eisenstein ideal of the Hecke algebra T(p)\mathbb{T}(\frak{p}) acting on J0(p)J_0(\frak{p}) once the degree of p\frak{p} is large enough. We also obtain an asymptotic formula for the size of the discriminant of T(p)\mathbb{T}(\frak{p}) by relating this discriminant to the order of ΦΦ; in this problem the order of ΦΦ plays a role similar to the Faltings height of classical modular Jacobians. Finally, we bound the spectrum of the adjacency operator of a finite subgraph of an infinite diagram in terms of the spectrum of the adjacency operator of the diagram itself; this result has applications to the gonality of Drinfeld modular curves.

On Garland's vanishing theorem for SLn\mathrm{SL}_n

This is an expository paper on Garland's vanishing theorem specialized to the case when the linear algebraic group is SLn\mathrm{SL}_n. Garland's theorem can be stated as a vanishing of the cohomology groups of certain finite simplicial complexes. The method of the proof is quite interesting on its own. It relates the vanishing of cohomology to the assertion that the minimal positive eigenvalue of a certain combinatorial laplacian is sufficiently large. Since the 1970's, this idea has found applications in a variety of problems in representation theory, group theory, and combinatorics, so the paper might be of interest to a wide audience. The paper is intended for non-specialists and graduate students.

The Eisenstein ideal and Jacquet-Langlands isogeny over function fields

Let p\frak{p} and q\frak{q} be two distinct prime ideals of Fq[T]\mathbb{F}_q[T]. We use the Eisenstein ideal of the Hecke algebra of the Drinfeld modular curve X0(pq)X_0(\frak{p}\frak{q}) to compare the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian J0(pq)J_0(\frak{p}\frak{q}) with its subgroup generated by the cuspidal divisors, and to produce explicit examples of Jacquet-Langlands isogenies. Our results are stronger than what is currently known about the analogues of these problems over Q\mathbb{Q}.

The rational torsion subgroups of Drinfeld modular Jacobians and Eisenstein pseudo-harmonic cochains

Let n\frak{n} be a square-free ideal of Fq[T]\mathbb{F}_q[T]. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety J0(n)J_0(\frak{n}) of the Drinfeld modular curve X0(n)X_0(\frak{n}). We prove that for any prime number ℓ\ell not dividing q(q−1)q(q-1), the ℓ\ell-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the ℓ\ell-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime ℓ\ell not dividing q−1q-1.

Drinfeld modules, Frobenius endomorphisms, and CM-liftings

We give a global description of the Frobenius elements in the division fields of Drinfeld modules of rank 22. We apply this description to derive a criterion for the splitting modulo primes of a class of non-solvable polynomials, and to study the frequency with which the reductions of Drinfeld modules have small endomorphism rings. We also generalize some of these results to higher rank Drinfeld modules and prove CM-lifting theorems for Drinfeld modules.

Local diophantine properties of modular curves of D\cal{D}-elliptic sheaves

We study the existence of rational points on modular curves of D\cal{D}-elliptic sheaves over local fields and the structure of special fibres of these curves. We discuss some applications which include finding presentations for arithmetic groups arising from quaternion algebras, finding the equations of modular curves of D\cal{D}-elliptic sheaves, and constructing curves violating the Hasse principle.
