Asymptotic analysis of parabolic equations with stiff transport terms by a multi-scale approach

We perform the asymptotic analysis of parabolic equations with stiff transport terms. This kind of problem occurs, for example, in collisional gyrokinetic theory for tokamak plasmas, where the velocity diffusion of the collision mechanism is dominated by the velocity advection along the Laplace force corresponding to a strong magnetic field. This work appeal to the filtering techniques. Removing the fast oscillations associated to the singular transport operator, leads to a stable family of profiles. The limit profile comes by averaging with respect to the fast time variable, and still satisfies a parabolic model, whose diffusion matrix is completely characterized in terms of the original diffusion matrix and the stiff transport operator. Introducing first order correctors allows us to obtain strong convergence results, for general initial conditions (not necessarily well prepared).

Asymptotic Fixed-Speed Reduced Dynamics for Kinetic Equations in Swarming

We perform an asymptotic analysis of general particle systems arising in collective behavior in the limit of large self-propulsion and friction forces. These asymptotics impose a fixed speed in the limit, and thus a reduction of the dynamics to a sphere in the velocity variables. The limit models are obtained by averaging with respect to the fast dynamics. We can include all typical effects in the applications: short-range repulsion, long-range attraction, and alignment. For instance, we can rigorously show that the Cucker-Smale model is reduced to the Vicsek model without noise in this asymptotic limit. Finally, a formal expansion based on the reduced dynamics allows us to treat the case of diffusion. This technique follows closely the gyroaverage method used when studying the magnetic confinement of charged particles. The main new mathematical difficulty is to deal with measure solutions in this expansion procedure.

Finite Larmor radius approximation for the Fokker-Planck-Landau equation

The subject matter of this paper concerns the derivation of the finite Larmor radius approximation, when collisions are taken into account. Several studies are performed, corresponding to different collision kernels. The main motivation consists in computing the gyroaverage of the Fokker-Planck-Landau operator, which plays a major role in plasma physics. We show that the new collision operator enjoys the usual physical properties; the averaged kernel balances the mass, momentum, kinetic energy and dissipates the entropy.

Impact of strong magnetic fields on collision mechanism for transport of charged particles

One of the main applications in plasma physics concerns the energy production through thermo-nuclear fusion. The controlled fusion is achieved by magnetic confinement i.e., the plasma is confined into a toroidal domain (tokamak) under the action of huge magnetic fields. Several models exist for describing the evolution of strongly magnetized plasmas, most of them by neglecting the collisions between particles. The subject matter of this paper is to investigate the effect of large magnetic fields with respect to a collision mechanism. We consider here linear collision Boltzmann operators and derive, by averaging with respect to the fast cyclotronic motion due to strong magnetic forces, their effective collision kernels.

Strongly anisotropic diffusion problems; asymptotic analysis

The subject matter of this paper concerns anisotropic diffusion equations: we consider heat equations whose diffusion matrix have disparate eigenvalues. We determine first and second order approximations, we study the well-posedness of them and establish convergence results. The analysis relies on averaging techniques, which have been used previously for studying transport equations whose advection fields have disparate components.

Transport of charged particles under fast oscillating magnetic fields

The energy production through thermo-nuclear fusion requires the confinement of the plasma into a bounded domain. In most of the cases, such configurations are obtained by using strong magnetic fields. Several models exist for describing the evolution of a strongly magnetized plasma, i.e., guiding-center approximation, finite Larmor radius regime, etc. The topic of this paper concerns a different approach leading to plasma confinement. More exactly we are interested in mathematical models with fast oscillating magnetic fields. We provide rigorous derivations for this kind of models and analyze their properties.
