Convex domains of Finsler and Riemannian manifolds

A detailed study of the notions of convexity for a hypersurface in a Finsler manifold is carried out. In particular, the infinitesimal and local notions of convexity are shown to be equivalent. Our approach differs from Bishop's one in his classical result (Bishop, Indiana Univ Math J 24:169-172, 1974) for the Riemannian case. Ours not only can be extended to the Finsler setting but it also reduces the typical requirements of differentiability for the metric and it yields consequences on the multiplicity of connecting geodesics in the convex domain defined by the hypersurface.

On the interplay between Lorentzian Causality and Finsler metrics of Randers type

We obtain some results in both Lorentz and Finsler geometries, by using a correspondence between the conformal structure (Causality) of standard stationary spacetimes on $M=\R\times S$ and Randers metrics on $S$. In particular, for stationary spacetimes, we give a simple characterization of when they are causally continuous or globally hyperbolic (including in the latter case, when $S$ is a Cauchy hypersurface), in terms of an associated Randers metric. Consequences for the computability of Cauchy developments are also derived. Causality suggests that the role of completeness in many results of Riemannian Geometry (geodesic connectedness by minimizing geodesics, Bonnet-Myers, Synge theorems) is played, in Finslerian Geometry, by the compactness of symmetrized closed balls. Moreover, under this condition we show that for any Randers metric there exists another Randers metric with the same pregeodesics and geodesically complete. Even more, results on the differentiability of Cauchy horizons in spacetimes yield consequences for the differentiability of the Randers distance to a subset, and vice versa.

Global hyperbolicity and Palais-Smale condition for action functionals in stationary spacetimes

In order to apply variational methods to the action functional for geodesics of a stationary spacetime, some hypotheses, useful to obtain classical Palais-Smale condition, are commonly used: pseudo-coercivity, bounds on certain coefficients of the metric, etc. We prove that these technical assumptions admit a natural interpretation for the conformal structure (causality) of the manifold. As a consequence, any stationary spacetime with a complete timelike Killing vector field and a complete Cauchy hypersurface (thus, globally hyperbolic), is proved to be geodesically connected.

On General Plane Fronted Waves. Geodesics

A general class of Lorentzian metrics, $M_0 x R^2$, $ds^2 = <.,.> + 2 du dv + H(x,u) du^2$, with $(M_0, <.,.>$ any Riemannian manifold, is introduced in order to generalize classical exact plane fronted waves. Here, we start a systematic study of their main geodesic properties: geodesic completeness, geodesic connectedness and multiplicity, causal character of connecting geodesics. These results are independent of the possibility of a full integration of geodesic equations. Variational and geometrical techniques are applied systematically. In particular, we prove that the asymptotic behavior of $H(x,u)$ with $x$ at infinity determines many properties of geodesics. Essentially, a subquadratic growth of $H$ ensures geodesic completeness and connectedness, while the critical situation appears when $H(x,u)$ behaves in some direction as $|x|^2$, as in the classical model of exact gravitational waves

Convexity of domains of Riemannian manifolds

In this paper we analyze the problem of the geodesic connectedness of subsets of Riemannian manifolds. By using variational methods, the geodesic connectedness of open domains (whose boundaries can be not differentiable and not convex) of a smooth Riemannian manifold is proved. In some cases also the convexity of the domain is obtained. Moreover we present examples of the applicability and of the independence of the assumptions. Finally we give an application to the existence of trajectories with fixed energy of dynamical systems.
