Teaching physics in real-life contexts: The Beirut explosion

Teaching physics in real-life contexts continues to be a challenge for teachers at different educational levels. In this article, three Context-Rich Problems are proposed to be implemented in the classroom for higher education, using the explosion that occurred in Beirut as a case study. These problems require the search and analysis of real data, integrating technologies as tools to learn physics. In particular, the analysis of images, videos, maps and audio recordings is suggested. The proposed activities are designed to promote active learning of classical mechanics subjects and the development of collaborative skills. The results of each problem allow a discussion based on scientific evidence in the classroom.

DC conductance and memory in 3D gravity

Transport properties are investigated in the two-dimensional dual dynamics of AdS$_{3}$ gravity. By providing boundary conditions that deform the ADM lapse and shift functions, we construct a lower dimensional model comprising two copies of chiral boson excitations with anisotropic scaling symmetry. Using bosonization, an electric current is identified. By means of the Kubo formula, we find a DC conductance depending on the level of the theory and the dynamical exponents. The bulk realization of the linear response is related to a type of gravitational memory emerging in the context of near-horizon boundary conditions. The process is adiabatic and represents a permanent spacetime deformation parametrized by anisotropic chiral bosons through a large gauge transformation.

The anisotropic chiral boson

We construct the theory of a chiral boson with anisotropic scaling, characterized by a dynamical exponent $z$, whose action reduces to that of Floreanini and Jackiw in the isotropic case ($z=1$). The standard free boson with Lifshitz scaling is recovered when both chiralities are nonlocally combined. Its canonical structure and symmetries are also analyzed. As in the isotropic case, the theory is also endowed with a current algebra. Noteworthy, the standard conformal symmetry is shown to be still present, but realized in a nonlocal way. The exact form of the partition function at finite temperature is obtained from the path integral, as well as from the trace over $\hat{u}(1)$ descendants. It is essentially given by the generating function of the number of partitions of an integer into $z$-th powers, being a well-known object in number theory. Thus, the asymptotic growth of the number of states at fixed energy, including subleading corrections, can be obtained from the appropriate extension of the renowned result of Hardy and Ramanujan.

Supertranslations and Superrotations at the Black Hole Horizon

We show that the asymptotic symmetries close to nonextremal black hole horizons are generated by an extension of supertranslations. This group is generated by a semidirect sum of Virasoro and Abelian currents. The charges associated with the asymptotic Killing symmetries satisfy the same algebra. When considering the special case of a stationary black hole, the zero mode charges correspond to the angular momentum and the entropy at the horizon.

Cosmological Kinetic Mixing

In this paper we generalize the kinetic mixing idea to time reparametrization invariant theories, namely, relativistic point particles and cosmology in order to obtain new insights for dark matter and energy. In the first example, two relativistic particles interact through an appropriately chosen coupling term. It is shown that the system can be diagonalized by means of a non-local field redefinition, and, as a result of this procedure, the mass of one the particles gets rescaled. In the second case, inspired by the previous example, two cosmological models (each with its own scale factor) are made to interact in a similar fashion. The equations of motion are solved numerically in different scenarios (dust, radiation or a cosmological constant coupled to each sector of the system). When a cosmological constant term is present, kinetic mixing rescales it to a lower value which may be more amenable to observations.

Boundary dynamics of asymptotically flat 3D gravity coupled to higher spin fields

We construct a two-dimensional action principle invariant under a spin-three extension of BMS$_3$ group. Such a theory is obtained through a reduction of Chern-Simons action with a boundary. This procedure is carried out by imposing a set of boundary conditions obtained from asymptotically flat spacetimes in three dimensions. When implementing part of this set, we obtain an analog of chiral WZW model based on a contraction of $sl(3,\mathbb{R}) \times sl(3,\mathbb{R})$. The remaining part of the boundary conditions imposes constraints on the conserved currents of the model, which allows to further reduce the action principle. It is shown that a sector of this latter theory is related to a flat limit of Toda theory.

Higgs Model Coupled to Dark Photons

A dark sector containing a Higgs field and a dark photon coupled to visible photons via a small kinetic mixing is considered. The mass of the dark gauge boson becomes rescaled by the parameter involved in the kinetic mixing. We also calculate the total annihilation cross section for scalar Higgs interacting with an external field and show that exhibits Sommerfeld enhancement. The model can be extended to a $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ dark sector. The mass of the dark $Z$ boson increases due to the kinetic mixing.

Asymptotically flat spacetimes in three-dimensional higher spin gravity

A consistent set of asymptotic conditions for higher spin gravity in three dimensions is proposed in the case of vanishing cosmological constant. The asymptotic symmetries are found to be spanned by a higher spin extension of the BMS3 algebra with an appropriate central extension. It is also shown that our results can be recovered from the ones recently found for asymptotically AdS3 spacetimes by virtue of a suitable gauge choice that allows to perform the vanishing cosmological constant limit.

The Boulware-Deser mode in Zwei-Dreibein gravity

Massive gravity in three dimensions accepts several different formulations. Recently, the 3-dimensional bigravity dRGT model in first order form, Zwei-Dreibein gravity, was considered by Bergshoeff {\it et al.} and it was argued that the Boulware-Deser mode is killed by extra constraints. We revisit this assertion and conclude that there are sectors on the space of initial conditions, or subsets of the most general such model, where this mode is absent. But, generically, the theory does carry 3 degrees of freedom and thus the Boulware-Deser mode is still active. Our results also sheds light on the equivalence between metric and vierbein formulations of dRGT model.

Asymptotically flat spacetimes in 3D bigravity

We report that a class of three-dimensional bimetric theories contain asymptotically flat solutions. These spacetimes can be cast in a set of asymptotic conditions at null infinity which are preserved under the infinite dimensional BMS group. Moreover, the algebra of the canonical generators exhibits a central extension. The possibility that these solutions describe regular black holes is also discussed.

The bigravity black hole and its thermodynamics

We argue that the Isham-Storey exact solution to bigravity does not describe black holes because the horizon is a singular surface. However, this is not a generic property of bigravity, but a property of a particular potential. More general potentials do accept regular black holes. For regular black holes, we compute the total energy and thermodynamical parameters. Phase transitions occur for certain critical temperatures. We also find a novel region on phase space describing up to 4 allowed states for a given temperature.
