Periodic homogenization in the context of structured deformations

An energy for first-order structured deformations in the context of periodic homogenization is obtained. This energy, defined in principle by relaxation of an initial energy of integral type featuring contributions of bulk and interfacial terms, is proved to possess an integral representation in terms of relaxed bulk and interfacial energy densities. These energy densities, in turn, are obtained via asymptotic cell formulae defined by suitably averaging, over larger and larger cubes, the bulk and surface contributions of the initial energy. The integral representation theorem, the main result of this paper, is obtained by mixing blow-up techniques, typical in the context of structured deformations, with the averaging process proper of the theory of homogenization.

Homogenization of a modified bidomain model involving imperfect transmission

We study, by means of the periodic unfolding technique, the homogenization of a modified bidomain model, which describes the propagation of the action potential in the cardiac electrophysiology. Such a model, allowing the presence of pathological zones in the heart, involves various geometries and non-standard transmission conditions on the interface between the healthy and the damaged part of the cardiac muscle.

Well-posedness for a modified bidomain model describing bioelectric activity in damaged heart tissues

We prove the existence and the uniqueness of a solution for a modified bidomain model, describing the electrical behaviour of the cardiac tissue in pathological situations. The leading idea is to reduce the problem to an abstract parabolic setting, which requires to introduce several auxiliary differential systems and a non-standard bilinear form. The main difficulties are due to the degeneracy of the bidomain system and to its non-standard coupling with a diffusion equation, accounting for the presence of the pathological zone in the heart tissue.

Concentration and homogenization in electrical conduction in heterogeneous media involving the Laplace-Beltrami operator

We study a concentration and homogenization problem modelling electrical conduction in a composite material. The novelty of the problem is due to the specific scaling of the physical quantities characterizing the dielectric component of the composite. This leads to the appearance of a peculiar displacement current governed by a Laplace-Beltrami pseudo-parabolic equation. This pseudo-parabolic character is present also in the homogenized equation, which is obtained by the unfolding technique.

Well-posedness of two pseudo-parabolic problems for electrical conduction in heterogeneous media

We prove a well-posedness result for two pseudo-parabolic problems, which can be seen as two models for the same electrical conduction phenomenon in heterogeneous media, neglecting the magnetic field. One of the problems is the concentration limit of the other one, when the thickness of the dielectric inclusions goes to zero. The concentrated problem involves a transmission condition through interfaces, which is mediated by a suitable Laplace-Beltrami type equation.

Asymptotic decay under nonlinear and noncoercive dissipative effects for electrical conduction in biological tissues

We consider a nonlinear model for electrical conduction in biological tissues. The nonlinearity appears in the interface condition prescribed on the cell membrane. The purpose of this paper is proving asymptotic convergence for large times to a periodic solution when time-periodic boundary data are assigned. The novelty here is that we allow the nonlinearity to be noncoercive. We consider both the homogenized and the non-homogenized version of the problem.
