The Ginzburg-Landau energy with a pinning term oscillating faster than the coherence length

The aim of this article is to study the magnetic Ginzburg-Landau functional with an oscillating pinning term. We consider here oscillations of the pinning term that are much faster than the coherence length \(\varepsilon>0\) which is also the inverse of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter. We study both the case of a periodic potential and of a random stationary ergodic one. We prove that we can reduce the study of the problem to the case where the pinning term is replaced by its average, in the periodic case, and by its expectation with respect to the random parameter in the random case. In order to do that we use a decoupling of the energy due to Lassoued-Mironescu. This leads us to the study of the convergence of a scalar positive minimizer of the Ginzburg-Landau energy with pinning term and with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We prove uniform convergence of this minimizer towards the mean value of the pinning term by using a blow-up argument and a Liouville type result for non-vanishing entire solutions of the real Ginzburg-Landau/Allen-Cahn equation, due to Farina.

Existence and non existence results for minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau energy with prescribed degrees

Let $\mathcal{D} =Ω\setminus\barω \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ be a smooth annular type domain. We consider the simplified Ginzburg-Landau energy $E_ε(u)=\frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathcal{D}} |\nabla u|^2 +\frac{1}{4ε^2}\int_{\mathcal{D}} (1-|u|^2)^2$, where $u: \mathcal{D} \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$, and look for minimizers of $E_ε$ with prescribed degrees $deg(u,\partial Ω)=p$, $deg(u,\partial ω)=q$ on the boundaries of the domain. For large $ε$ and for balanced degrees, i.e., $p=q$, we obtain existence of minimizers for {\it thin} domain. We also prove non-existence of minimizers of $E_ε$, for large $ε$, in the case $p\neq q$, $pq>0$ and $\mathcal{D}$ is a circular annulus with large capacity (corresponding to "thin" annulus). Our approach relies on similar results obtained for the Dirichlet energy $E_\infty(u)=\frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathcal{D}}|\nabla u|^2$, the existence result obtained by Berlyand and Golovaty and on a technique developed by Misiats.

Study of a 3D Ginzburg-Landau functional with a discontinuous pinning term

In a convex domain $Ø\subset\R^3$, we consider the minimization of a 3D-Ginzburg-Landau type energy $E_\v(u)=1/2\int_Ø|\n u|^2+\frac{1}{2\v^2}(a^2-|u|^2)^2$ with a discontinuous pinning term $a$ among $H^1(Ø,\C)$-maps subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition $g\in H^{1/2}(\pØ,§^1)$. The pinning term $a:\R^3\to\R^*_+$ takes a constant value $b\in(0,1)$ in $ø$, an inner strictly convex subdomain of $Ø$, and 1 outside $ø$. We prove energy estimates with various error terms depending on assumptions on $Ø,ø$ and $g$. In some special cases, we identify the vorticity defects via the concentration of the energy. Under hypotheses on the singularities of $g$ (the singularities are polarized and quantified by their degrees which are $\pm 1$), vorticity defects are geodesics (computed w.r.t. a geodesic metric $d_{a^2}$ depending only on $a$) joining two paired singularities of $g$ $p_i & n_{σ(i)}$ where $σ$ is a minimal connection (computed w.r.t. a metric $d_{a^2}$) of the singularities of $g$ and $p_1,...p_k$ are the positive (resp. $n_1,...,n_k$ the negative) singularities.

Ginzburg-Landau model with small pinning domains

We consider a Ginzburg-Landau type energy with a piecewise constant pinning term $a$ in the potential $(a^2 - |u|^2)^2$. The function $a$ is different from 1 only on finitely many disjoint domains, called the {\it pinning domains}. These pinning domains model small impurities in a homogeneous superconductor and shrink to single points in the limit $\v\to0$; here, $\v$ is the inverse of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter. We study the energy minimization in a smooth simply connected domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{C}$ with Dirichlet boundary condition $g$ on $\d Ø$, with topological degree ${\rm deg}_{\d Ø} (g) = d >0$. Our main result is that, for small $\v$, minimizers have $d$ distinct zeros (vortices) which are inside the pinning domains and they have a degree equal to 1. The question of finding the locations of the pinning domains with vortices is reduced to a discrete minimization problem for a finite-dimensional functional of renormalized energy. We also find the position of the vortices inside the pinning domains and show that, asymptotically, this position is determined by {\it local renormalized energy} which does not depend on the external boundary conditions.

Local Minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau Functional with Prescribed Degrees

We consider, in a smooth bounded multiply connected domain $\dom\subset\R^2$, the Ginzburg-Landau energy $\d E_\v(u)=1/2\int_\dom{|\n u|^2}+\frac{1}{4\v^2}\int_\dom{(1-|u|^2)^2}$ subject to prescribed degree conditions on each component of $\p\dom$. In general, minimal energy maps do not exist \cite{BeMi1}. When $\dom$ has a single hole, Berlyand and Rybalko \cite{BeRy1} proved that for small $\v$ local minimizers do exist. We extend the result in \cite{BeRy1}: $\d E_\v(u)$ has, in domains $\dom$ with $2,3,...$ holes and for small $\v$, local minimizers. Our approach is very similar to the one in \cite{BeRy1}; the main difference stems in the construction of test functions with energy control.

The Ginzburg-Landau functional with a discontinuous and rapidly oscillating pinning term. Part II: the non-zero degree case

We consider minimizers of a Ginzburg-Landau energy with a discontinuous and rapidly oscillating pinning term, subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition of degree $d > 0$. The pinning term models an unbounded number of small impurities in the domain. We prove that for strongly type II superconductor with impurities, minimizers have exactly d isolated zeros (vortices). These vortices are of degree 1 and pinned by the impurities. As in the standard case studied by Bethuel, Brezis and Hélein, the macroscopic location of vortices is governed by vortex/vortex and vortex/ boundary repelling effects. In some special cases we prove that their macroscopic location tends to minimize the renormalized energy of Bethuel-Brezis-Hélein. In addition, impurities affect the microscopic location of vortices. Our technics allows us to work with impurities having different size. In this situation we prove that vortices are pinned by the largest impurities.
