The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Anomaly detection in high-energy physics using a quantum autoencoder

The lack of evidence for new interactions and particles at the Large Hadron Collider has motivated the high-energy physics community to explore model-agnostic data-analysis approaches to search for new physics. Autoencoders are unsupervised machine learning models based on artificial neural networks, capable of learning background distributions. We study quantum autoencoders based on variational quantum circuits for the problem of anomaly detection at the LHC. For a QCD $t\bar{t}$ background and resonant heavy Higgs signals, we find that a simple quantum autoencoder outperforms classical autoencoders for the same inputs and trains very efficiently. Moreover, this performance is reproducible on present quantum devices. This shows that quantum autoencoders are good candidates for analysing high-energy physics data in future LHC runs.

Non-resonant new physics search at the LHC for the $b \to c τν$ anomalies

Motivated by the $b \to c τ\overlineν$ anomalies, we study non-resonant searches for new physics at the large hadron collider (LHC) by considering final states with an energetic and hadronically decaying $τ$ lepton, a $b$-jet and large missing transverse momentum ($pp \to τ_h \overline{b} + E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$). Such searches can be useful to probe new physics contributions to $b \to c τ\overlineν$. They are analyzed not only within the dimension-six effective field theory (EFT) but also in explicit leptoquark (LQ) models with the LQ non-decoupled. The former is realized by taking a limit of large LQ mass in the latter. It is clarified that the LHC sensitivity is sensitive to the LQ mass for $O(1)$ TeV even in the search of $pp \to τ_h \overline{b} + E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$. Although the LQ models provide a weaker sensitivity than the EFT limit, it is found that the non-resonant search of $pp \to τ_h \overline{b} + E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$ can improve the sensitivity by $\approx 40\%$ versus a conventional mono-$τ$ search ($pp \to τ_h + E_{\rm T}^{\rm miss}$) in the whole LQ mass region. Consequently, it is expected that most of the parameter regions suggested by the $b \to c τ\overlineν$ anomalies can be probed at the HL-LHC. Also, it is shown that $\text{R}_2$ LQ scenario is accessible entirely once the LHC Run 2 data are analyzed. In addition, we discuss a charge selection of $τ_h$ to further suppress the standard-model background, and investigate the angular correlations among $b,\, τ$ and the missing transverse momentum to discriminate the LQ scenarios.

Testing Leptoquark/EFT in $\bar B \to D^{(*)} l\barν$ at the LHC

We investigate the current LHC bounds on New Physics (NP) that contributes to $\bar B \to D^{(*)} l\barν$ for $l = (e,μ,τ)$ by considering both leptoquark (LQ) models and an effective-field-theory (EFT) Hamiltonian. Experimental analyses from $l+\text{missing}$ searches with high $p_T$ are applied to evaluate the NP constraints with respect to the Wilson coefficients. A novel point of this work is to show difference between LQs and EFT for the applicable LHC bound. In particular, we find that the EFT description is not valid to search for LQs with the mass less than $\lesssim 10\,\text{TeV}$ at the LHC and leads to overestimated bounds. We also discuss future prospects of high luminosity LHC searches including the charge asymmetry of background and signal events. Finally, a combined summary for the flavor and LHC bounds is given, and then we see that in several NP scenarios the LHC constraints are comparable with the flavor ones.

Charged lepton flavor violation associated with heavy quark production in deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering via scalar exchange

We study charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) associated with heavy quark pair production in lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering $\ell_i N \to \ell_j q\bar{q} X$. Here $\ell_i$ and $\ell_j$ denote the initial and final leptons; $N$ and $X$ are respectively the initial nucleon and arbitrary final hadronic system. We employ a model Lagrangian in which a scalar and pseudoscalar mediator generates the CLFV. We derive heavy quark structure functions for scalar and pseudoscalar currents and compute momentum distributions of the final lepton for the process. Our focus is on the heavy quark mass effects in the final lepton momentum distribution. We clarify the necessity of inclusion of the heavy quark mass to obtain reliable theory predictions for the CLFV signal searches in the deep-inelastic scattering.

Probing double-aligned two Higgs doublet models at LHC

We consider two Higgs doublet models (THDMs) with both the Higgs potential and Yukawa interactions being aligned, which we call "double-aligned THDMs". In this scenario, coupling constants of the discovered Higgs boson to the Standard Model (SM) particles are identical to those of the SM Higgs boson, and flavor changing neutral currents via neutral Higgs bosons do not appear at tree level. We investigate current constraints and future prospects of the model by using measurements from flavor experiments and data of multi-lepton final states at LHC. Especially, we focus on the electroweak pair production of the additional Higgs bosons with their masses below $2m_t$. We find that the most of the parameter space are already excluded by the current LHC data when the leptonic decays of the additional Higgs bosons are dominant, which can be interpreted to the scenario in the Type-X THDM as a special case. We also clarify the parameter region where the high-luminosity LHC can explore, and demonstrate the reconstruction of the masses of additional Higgs bosons from the $b\bar{b}τ^+τ^-$ final states in a few benchmark points.

Neural Network-based Top Tagger with Two-Point Energy Correlations and Geometry of Soft Emissions

Deep neural networks trained on jet images have been successful in classifying different kinds of jets. In this paper, we identify the crucial physics features that could reproduce the classification performance of the convolutional neural network in the top jet vs. QCD jet classification. We design a neural network that considers two types of substructural features: two-point energy correlations, and the IRC unsafe counting variables of a morphological analysis of jet images. The new set of IRC unsafe variables can be described by Minkowski functionals from integral geometry. To integrate these features into a single framework, we reintroduce two-point energy correlations in terms of a graph neural network and provide the other features to the network afterward. The network shows a comparable classification performance to the convolutional neural network. Since both networks are using IRC unsafe features at some level, the results based on simulations are often dependent on the event generator choice. We compare the classification results of Pythia 8 and Herwig 7, and a simple reweighting on the distribution of IRC unsafe features reduces the difference between the results from the two simulations.

Testing the 2HDM explanation of the muon g-2 anomaly at the LHC

The discrepancy between the measured value and the Standard Model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment is one of the important issues in the particle physics. In this paper, we consider a two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) where the extra Higgs doublet couples to muon and tau in lepton flavor violating (LFV) way and the one-loop correction involving the scalars largely contributes to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. The couplings should be sizable to explain the discrepancy, so that the extra Higgs bosons would dominantly decay into $μτ$ LFV modes, which makes the model testable at the LHC through multi-lepton signatures even though they are produced via the electroweak interaction. We discuss the current status and the future prospect for the extra Higgs searches at the LHC, and demonstrate the reconstruction of the mass spectrum using the multi-lepton events.

Heavy Fermion Bound States for Diphoton Excess at 750GeV $\sim$ Collider and Cosmological Constraints $\sim$

A colored heavy particle with sufficiently small width may form non-relativistic bound states when they are produced at the large hadron collider\,(LHC), and they can annihilate into a diphoton final state. The invariant mass of the diphoton would be around twice of the colored particle mass. In this paper, we study if such bound state can be responsible for the 750 GeV diphoton excess reported by ATLAS and CMS. We found that the best-fit signal cross section is obtained for the SU(2)$_L$ singlet colored fermion $X$ with $Y_X=4/3$. Having such an exotic hypercharge, the particle is expected to decay through some higher dimensional operators, consistent with the small width assumption. The decay of $X$ may involve a stable particle $χ$, if both $X$ and $χ$ are odd under some conserved $Z_2$ symmetry. In that case, the particle $X$ suffers from the constraints of jets + missing $E_T$ searches by ATLAS and CMS at 8 TeV and 13 TeV. We found that such a scenario still survives if the mass difference between $X$ and $χ$ is above $\sim$ 30 GeV for $m_X \sim 375$ GeV. Even assuming pair annihilation of $χ$ is small, the relic density of $χ$ is small enough if the mass difference between $X$ and $χ$ is smaller than $\sim$ 40 GeV.

Mono-top Signature from Supersymmetric $t \bar t H$ Channel

We point out that a distinctive mono-top signature is present in Natural SUSY scenarios when a scalar top-quark and higgsinos are almost mass degenerate. This signature originates from a supersymmetric counter part of the $t \bar t H$ process, i.e. $pp \to \tilde t t \tilde h$. Unlike mono-jet signatures exploiting initial state radiation, this channel can be regarded as a smoking gun signature of a light stop and higgsinos, allowing a direct probe of the stop and neutralino sectors. The production rate of this channel largely depends on the up-type higgsino components in the neutralinos while the stop sector is sensitive to angular distributions of top-quark's decay products. We develop an optimal search strategy to capture the supersymmetric $t \bar t H$ process and find that a high luminosity LHC can probe the stop and higgsino sectors with $m_{\tilde t_1} \lesssim 380$ GeV and $m_{\tilde t_1} - m_{\tilde χ_1^0} \lesssim m_W$. Additionally, we propose a kinematic variable with which one can measure the stop mixing in this channel.

Flavor-Changing Neutral-Current Decays in Top-Specific Variant Axion Model

The invisible variant axion model is very attractive as it is free from the domain wall problem. This model requires two Higgs doublets at the electroweak scale where one Higgs doublet carries a nonzero Peccei-Quinn (PQ) charge and the other is neutral under the PQ $\text U(1)$ symmetry. We consider the most interesting and less constrained scenario of the variant axion model, where only the right-handed top quark is charged under the PQ symmetry and couples with the PQ-charged Higgs doublet. As a result, the top quark can decay to the observed standard-model-like Higgs boson $h$ and the charm or up quark, $t\to h~ c/u$, which is testable soon at the LHC Run-II. Moreover, we propose a method to probe the chiral nature of the Higgs flavor-changing interaction using the angular distribution of $t \to ch$ decays if a sufficient number of such events are observed. We also show that our model has the capacity to explain the $h\toτμ$ decay reported by the CMS Collaboration, if the right-handed tau lepton also carries a PQ charge and couples to the PQ-charged Higgs boson.

LHC $τ$-rich Tests of Lepton-specific 2HDM for $(g-2)_μ$

The lepton-sepcific (or type X) 2HDM (L2HDM) is an attractive new physics candidate explaining the muon $g-2$ anomaly requiring a light CP-odd boson $A$ and large $\tanβ$. This scenario leads to $τ$-rich signatures, such as $3τ$, $4τ$ and $4τ+W/Z$, which can be readily accessible at the LHC. We first study the whole L2HDM parameter space to identify allowed regions of extra Higgs boson masses as well as two couplings $λ_{hAA}$ and $ξ_h^l$ which determine the 125 GeV Higgs boson decays $h\to τ^+τ^-$ and $h\to AA/AA^*(τ^+τ^-)$, respectively. This motivates us to set up two regions of interest: (A) $m_A \ll m_{H} \sim m_{H^\pm}$, and (B) $m_A \sim m_{H^\pm} \sim {\cal O}(100) \mbox{GeV} \ll m_H$, for which derive the current constraints by adopting the chargino-neutralino search at the LHC8, and then analyze the LHC14 prospects by implementing $τ$-tagging algorithm. A correlated study of the upcoming precision determination of the 125 GeV Higgs boson decay properties as well as the observation of multi-tau events at the next runs of LHC will be able to shed light on the L2HDM option for the muon $g-2$.

The Relic Neutralino Surface at a 100 TeV collider

We map the parameter space for MSSM neutralino dark matter which freezes out to the observed relic abundance, in the limit that all superpartners except the neutralinos and charginos are decoupled. In this space of relic neutralinos, we show the dominant dark matter annihilation modes, the mass splittings among the electroweakinos, direct detection rates, and collider cross-sections. The mass difference between the dark matter and the next-to-lightest neutral and charged states is typically much less than electroweak gauge boson masses. With these small mass differences, the relic neutralino surface is accessible to a future 100 TeV hadron collider, which can discover inter-neutralino mass splittings down to 1 GeV and thermal relic dark matter neutralino masses up to 1.5 TeV with a few inverse attobarns of luminosity. This coverage is a direct consequence of the increased collider energy: the Standard Model events with missing transverse momentum in the TeV range have mostly hard electroweak radiation, distinct from the soft radiation shed in compressed electroweakino decays. We exploit this kinematic feature in final states including photons and leptons, tailored to the 100 TeV collider environment.

Unitarity-controlled resonances after Higgs discovery

If the recently discovered Higgs boson's couplings deviate from the Standard Model expectation, we may anticipate new resonant physics in the weak boson fusion channels resulting from high scale unitarity sum rules of longitudinal gauge boson scattering. Motivated by excesses in analyses of multi-leptons+missing energy+jets final states during run 1, we perform a phenomenological investigation of these channels at the LHC bounded by current Higgs coupling constraints. Such an approach constrains the prospects to observe such new physics at the LHC as a function of very few and generic parameters and allows the investigation of the strong requirement of probability conservation in the electroweak sector to high energies. Our analysis is directly relevant for the 2 TeV excess reported recently by the CMS and ATLAS collaborations.

Boosted Higgs Shapes

The inclusive Higgs production rate through gluon fusion has been measured to be in agreement with the Standard Model (SM). We show that even if the inclusive Higgs production rate is very SM-like, a precise determination of the boosted Higgs transverse momentum shape offers the opportunity to see effects of natural new physics. These measurements are generically motivated by effective field theory arguments and specifically in extensions of the SM with a natural weak scale, like composite Higgs models and natural supersymmetry. We show in detail how a measurement at high transverse momentum of $H\to 2\ell+\mathbf{p}\!\!/_T$ via $H\to ττ$ and $H\to WW^*$ could be performed and demonstrate that it offers a compelling alternative to the $t\bar t H$ channel. We discuss the sensitivity to new physics in the most challenging scenario of an exactly SM-like inclusive Higgs cross-section.

Disentangling Higgs-Top Couplings in Associated Production

In the presence of CP violation, the Higgs-top coupling may have both scalar and pseudoscalar components, $κ_t$ and ${\tilde κ_t}$, which are bounded indirectly but only weakly by the present experimental constraints on the Higgs-gluon-gluon and Higgs-$γ$-$γ$ couplings, whereas upper limits on electric dipole moments provide strong additional indirect constraints on ${\tilde κ_t}$, if the Higgs-electron coupling is similar to that in the Standard Model and there are no cancellations with other contributions. We discuss methods to measure directly the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs-top couplings by measurements of Higgs production in association with ${\bar t} t$, single $t$ and single ${\bar t}$ at the LHC. Measurements of the total cross sections are very sensitive to variations in the Higgs-top couplings that are consistent with the present indirect constraints, as are invariant mass distributions in ${\bar t} t H$, $tH$ and ${\bar t} H$ final states. We also investigate the additional information on $κ_t$ and ${\tilde κ_t}$ that could be obtained from measurements of the longitudinal and transverse $t$ polarization in the different associated production channels, and the ${\bar t} t$ spin correlation in ${\bar t} t H$ events.

Higgs boson to di-tau channel in Chargino-Neutralino searches at the LHC

We consider chargino-neutralino production, $\tildeχ_2^0 \tildeχ_1^\pm \to (h \tildeχ_1^0)(W^\pm \tildeχ_1^0)$, which results in Higgs boson final states that subsequently decay (inclusively) to leptons (either $h\rightarrow τ^+τ^-$ or $h\rightarrow W^+W^- \to (e^+e^-, μ^+μ^-, τ^+τ^-)+E_T^\mathrm{miss}$). Such channels are dominant in large regions of the allowed supersymmetric parameter space for many concrete supersymmetric models. The existence of leptons allows for good control over the backgrounds, rendering this channel competitive to the conventional $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ channel that has been previously used to impose constraints. We include hadronic decays of the $τ$ leptons in our analysis through a $τ$-identification algorithm. We consider integrated luminosities of 100 fb$^{-1}$, 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 3000 fb$^{-1}$, for an LHC running at $pp$ centre-of-mass energy of 14 TeV and provide the expected constraints on the $M_2$-$M_1$ plane.

Buckets of Higgs and Tops

We show that associated production of a Higgs with a top pair can be observed in purely hadronic decays. Reconstructing the top quarks in the form of jet buckets allows us to control QCD backgrounds as well as signal combinatorics. The background can be measured from side bands in the reconstructed Higgs mass. We back up our claims with a detailed study of the QCD event simulation, both for the signal and for the backgrounds.

Buckets of Tops

Reconstructing hadronically decaying top quarks is a key challenge at the LHC, affecting a long list of Higgs analyses and new physics searches. We propose a new method of collecting jets in buckets, corresponding to top quarks and initial state radiation. This method is particularly well suited for moderate transverse momenta of the top quark, closing the gap between top taggers and traditional top reconstruction. Applying it to searches for supersymmetric top squarks we illustrate the power of buckets.

Muon g-2 and LHC phenomenology in the $L_μ-L_τ$ gauge symmetric model

In this paper, we consider phenomenology of a model with an $L_μ-L_τ$ gauge symmetry. Since the muon couples to the $L_μ-L_τ$ gauge boson (called $Z''$ boson), its contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment (muon g-2) can account for the discrepancy between the standard model prediction and the experimental measurements. On the other hand, the $Z''$ boson does not interact with the electron and quarks, and hence there are no strong constraints from collider experiments even if the $Z''$ boson mass is of the order of the electroweak scale. We show an allowed region of a parameter space in the $L_μ-L_τ$ symmetric model, taking into account consistency with the electroweak precision measurements as well as the muon g-2. We study the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) phenomenology, and show that the current and future data would probe the interesting parameter space for this model.

Measuring Higgs CP and couplings with hadronic event shapes

Experimental falsification or validation of the Standard Model of Particle Physics involves the measurement of the CP quantum number and couplings of the Higgs boson. Both ATLAS and CMS have reported an SM Higgs-like excess around m_H=125 GeV. In this mass range the properties of the Higgs boson can be extracted from an analysis of the azimuthal angle distribution of the two jets in pp->Hjj events. This channel is also important to measure the couplings of the Higgs boson to electroweak gauge bosons and fermions, hereby establishing the exceptional role of the Higgs boson in the Standard Model. Instead of exploiting the jet angular correlation, we show that hadronic event shapes exhibit substantial discriminative power to separate a CP even from a CP odd Higgs. Some event shapes even show an increased sensitivity to the Higgs CP compared to the azimuthal angle correlation. Constraining the Higgs couplings via a separation of the weak boson fusion and the gluon fusion Higgs production modes can be achieved applying similar strategies.

Stop searches in 2012

For this year's 8TeV run of the LHC we lay out different strategies to search for scalar top pairs. We show results for the hadronic and for the semi-leptonic channels based on hadronic top tagging. For the di-lepton channel we illustrate the impact of transverse mass variables. Each of our signal-to-background ratios ranges around unity for a stop mass around 400GeV. The combined signal significances show that dedicated stop searches are becoming sensitive over a non-negligible part of parameter space.

Tagging single Tops

Top taggers which identify and reconstruct boosted top quarks have been established as novel tools for a multitude of LHC analyses. We show how single top production in association with a light-flavor or bottom jet can be observed in the boosted phase space regime. The full top reconstruction as part of the tagging algorithm allows us to define a distinctive kinematic angle which clearly separates different single top production processes.

$A^t_{FB}$ Meets LHC

The recent Tevatron measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry of the top quark shows an intriguing discrepancy with Standard Model expectations, particularly at large $\ttbar$ invariant masses. Measurements of this quantity are subtle at the LHC, due to its $pp$ initial state, however, one can define a forward-central-charge asymmetry which captures the physics. We study the capability of the LHC to measure this asymmetry and find that within the SM a measurement at the $5σ$ level is possible with roughly 60 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 14$ TeV. If nature realizes a model which enhances the asymmetry (as is necessary to explain the Tevatron measurements), a significant difference from zero can be observed much earlier, perhaps even during early LHC running at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. We further explore the capabilities of the 7 TeV LHC to discover resonances or contact interactions which modify the $\ttbar$ invariant mass distribution using recent boosted top tagging techniques. We find that TeV-scale color octet resonances can be discovered, even with small coupling strengths and that contact interactions can be probed at scales exceeding 6 TeV. Overall, the LHC has good potential to clarify the situation with regards to the Tevatron forward-backward measurement.

Boosted Semileptonic Tops in Stop Decays

Top partner searches are one of the key aspects of new physics analyses at the LHC. We correct an earlier statement that supersymmetric top searches based on decays to semileptonic tops are not promising. Reconstructing the direction of the boosted leptonic top quark and correlating it with the measured missing transverse energy vector allows us to reduce the top pair background to an easily manageable level. In addition, reconstructing the full momentum of the leptonic top quark determines the stop mass based on an M_{T2} endpoint.

How to Improve Top Tagging

In time for the first tests on LHC data we introduce a set of improvements and tests of purely kinematic top tagging algorithms. First, we show how different jet algorithms can be used for different transverse momentum regimes. Combining pruning and filtering in the reconstruction can enhance the signal over background ratio significantly, while larger jet radii only give minor improvements. Finally, bottom tagging can be added to the top tagger, but at least for the HEPTopTagger does not improve the kinematic selection algorithm.

Stop Reconstruction with Tagged Tops

At the LHC combinatorics make it unlikely that we will be able to observe stop pair production with a decay to a semi-leptonic top pair and missing energy for generic supersymmetric mass spectra. Using a Standard-Model top tagger on fully hadronic top decays we can not only extract the stop signal but also measure the top momentum. To illustrate the promise of tagging tops with moderate boost we include a detailed discussion of our HEPTopTagger algorithm.

Dark matter and collider phenomenology of split-UED

We explicitly show that split-universal extra dimension (split-UED), a recently suggested extension of universal extra dimension (UED) model, can nicely explain recent anomalies in cosmic-ray positrons and electrons observed by PAMELA and ATIC/PPB-BETS. Kaluza-Klein (KK) dark matters mainly annihilate into leptons because the hadronic branching fraction is highly suppressed by large KK quark masses and the antiproton flux agrees very well with the observation where no excess is found . The flux of cosmic gamma-rays from pion decay is also highly suppressed and hardly detected in low energy region (E<20 GeV). Collider signatures of colored KK particles at the LHC, especially q_1 q_1 production, are studied in detail. Due to the large split in masses of KK quarks and other particles, hard p_T jets and missing E_T are generated, which make it possible to suppress the standard model background and discover the signals.
