Exponential mixing for random dynamical systems and an example of Pierrehumbert

We consider the question of exponential mixing for random dynamical systems on arbitrary compact manifolds without boundary. We put forward a robust, dynamics-based framework that allows us to construct space-time smooth, uniformly bounded in time, universal exponential mixers. The framework is then applied to the problem of proving exponential mixing in a classical example proposed by Pierrehumbert in 1994, consisting of alternating periodic shear flows with randomized phases. This settles a longstanding open problem on proving the existence of a space-time smooth (universal) exponentially mixing incompressible velocity field on a two-dimensional periodic domain while also providing a toolbox for constructing such smooth universal mixers in all dimensions.

Linear inviscid damping for shear flows near Couette in the 2D stably stratified regime

We investigate the linear stability of shears near the Couette flow for a class of 2D incompressible stably stratified fluids. Our main result consists of nearly optimal decay rates for perturbations of stationary states whose velocities are monotone shear flows $(U(y),0)$ and have an exponential density profile. In the case of the Couette flow $U(y)=y$, we recover the rates predicted by Hartman in 1975, by adopting an explicit point-wise approach in frequency space. As a by-product, this implies optimal decay rates as well as Lyapunov instability in $L^2$ for the vorticity. For the previously unexplored case of more general shear flows close to Couette, the inviscid damping results follow by a weighted energy estimate. Each outcome concerning the stably stratified regime applies to the Boussinesq equations as well. Remarkably, our results hold under the celebrated Miles-Howard criterion for stratified fluids.

Homogenization and hypocoercivity for Fokker-Planck equations driven by weakly compressible shear flows

We study the long-time dynamics of two-dimensional linear Fokker-Planck equations driven by a drift that can be decomposed in the sum of a large shear component and the gradient of a regular potential depending on one spatial variable. The problem can be interpreted as that of a passive scalar advected by a slightly compressible shear flow, and undergoing small diffusion. For the corresponding stochastic differential equation, we give explicit homogenization rates in terms of a family of time-scales depending on the parameter measuring the strength of the incompressible perturbation. This is achieved by exploiting an auxiliary Poisson problem, and by computing the related effective diffusion coefficients. Regarding the long-time behaviour of the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation, we provide explicit decay rates to the unique invariant measure by employing a quantitative version of the classical hypocoercivity scheme. From a fluid mechanics perspective, this turns out to be equivalent to quantifying the phenomenon of enhanced diffusion for slightly compressible shear flows.

Stationary Structures near the Kolmogorov and Poiseuille Flows in the 2d Euler Equations

We study the behavior of solutions to the incompressible $2d$ Euler equations near two canonical shear flows with critical points, the Kolmogorov and Poiseuille flows, with consequences for the associated Navier-Stokes problems. We exhibit a large family of new, non-trivial stationary states of analytic regularity, that are arbitrarily close to the Kolmogorov flow on the square torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. This situation contrasts strongly with the setting of some monotone shear flows, such as the Couette flow: in both cases the linearized problem exhibits an "inviscid damping" mechanism that leads to relaxation of perturbations of the base flows back to nearby shear flows. While this effect persists nonlinearly for suitably small and regular perturbations of some monotone shear flows, for the Kolmogorov flow our result shows that this is not possible. Our construction of these stationary states builds on a degeneracy in the global structure of the Kolmogorov flow on $\mathbb{T}^2$. In this regard both the Kolmogorov flow on a rectangular torus and the Poiseuille flow in a channel are very different, and we show that the only stationary states near them must indeed be shears, even in relatively low regularity $H^3$ resp. $H^{5+}$. In addition, we show that this behavior is mirrored closely in the related Navier-Stokes settings: the linearized problems near the Poiseuille and Kolmogorov flows both exhibit an enhanced rate of dissipation. Previous work by us and others shows that this effect survives in the full, nonlinear problem near the Poiseuille flow and near the Kolmogorov flow on rectangular tori, provided that the perturbations lie below a certain threshold. However, we show here that the corresponding result cannot hold near the Kolmogorov flow on $\mathbb{T}^2$.

Enhanced dissipation in the Navier-Stokes equations near the Poiseuille flow

We consider solutions to the 2d Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times\mathbb{R}$ close to the Poiseuille flow, with small viscosity $ν>0$. Our first result concerns a semigroup estimate for the linearized problem. Here we show that the $x$-dependent modes of linear solutions decay on a time-scale proportional to $ν^{-1/2}|\logν|$. This effect is often referred to as \emph{enhanced dissipation} or \emph{metastability} since it gives a much faster decay than the regular dissipative time-scale $ν^{-1}$ (this is also the time-scale on which the $x$-independent mode naturally decays). We achieve this using an adaptation of the method of hypocoercivity. Our second result concerns the full nonlinear equations. We show that when the perturbation from the Poiseuille flow is initially of size at most $ν^{3/4+}$, then it remains so for all time. Moreover, the enhanced dissipation also persists in this scenario, so that the $x$-dependent modes of the solution are dissipated on a time scale of order $ν^{-1/2}|\logν|$. This transition threshold is established by a bootstrap argument using the semigroup estimate and a careful analysis of the nonlinear term in order to deal with the unboundedness of the domain and the Poiseuille flow itself.

Sufficient conditions for dual cascade flux laws in the stochastic 2d Navier-Stokes equations

We provide sufficient conditions for mathematically rigorous proofs of the third order universal laws capturing the energy flux to large scales and enstrophy flux to small scales for statistically stationary, forced-dissipated 2d Navier-Stokes equations in the large-box limit. These laws should be regarded as 2d turbulence analogues of the $4/5$ law in 3d turbulence, predicting a constant flux of energy and enstrophy (respectively) through the two inertial ranges in the dual cascade of 2d turbulence. Conditions implying only one of the two cascades are also obtained, as well as compactness criteria which show that the provided sufficient conditions are not far from being necessary. The specific goal of the work is to provide the weakest characterizations of the '0-th laws' of 2d turbulence in order to make mathematically rigorous predictions consistent with experimental evidence.

Invariant measures for passive scalars in the small noise inviscid limit

We consider a class of invariant measures for a passive scalar $f$ driven by an incompressible velocity field $\boldsymbol{u}$, on a $d$-dimensional periodic domain, satisfying $$ \partial_t f + \boldsymbol{u} \cdot \nabla f = 0, \qquad f(0)=f_0. $$ The measures are obtained as limits of stochastic viscous perturbations. We prove that the span of the $H^1$ eigenfunctions of the operator $\boldsymbol{u}\cdot\nabla$ contains the support of these measures. We also analyze several explicit examples: when $\boldsymbol{u}$ is a shear flow or a relaxation enhancing flow (a generalization of weakly mixing), we can characterize the limiting measure uniquely and compute its covariance structure. We also consider the case of two-dimensional cellular flows, for which further regularity properties of the functions in the support of the measure can be deduced. The main results are proved with the use of spectral theory results, in particular the RAGE theorem, which are used to characterize large classes of orbits of the inviscid problem that are growing in $H^1$.

Smooth attractors for weak solutions of the SQG equation with critical dissipation

We consider the evolution of weak vanishing viscosity solutions to the critically dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Due to the possible non-uniqueness of solutions, we rephrase the problem as a set-valued dynamical system and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal Sobolev regularity. To achieve this, we derive a new Sobolev estimate involving Hölder norms, which complement the existing estimates based on commutator analysis.

Uniformly attracting limit sets for the critically dissipative SQG equation

We consider the global attractor of the critical SQG semigroup $S(t)$ on the scale-invariant space $H^1(\mathbb{T}^2)$. It was shown in~\cite{CTV13} that this attractor is finite dimensional, and that it attracts uniformly bounded sets in $H^{1+δ}(\mathbb{T}^2)$ for any $δ>0$, leaving open the question of uniform attraction in $H^1(\mathbb{T}^2)$. In this paper we prove the uniform attraction in $H^1(\mathbb{T}^2)$, by combining ideas from DeGiorgi iteration and nonlinear maximum principles.

Minimality properties of set-valued processes and their pullback attractors

We discuss the existence of pullback attractors for multivalued dynamical systems on metric spaces. Such attractors are shown to exist without any assumptions in terms of continuity of the solution maps, based only on minimality properties with respect to the notion of pullback attraction. When invariance is required, a very weak closed graph condition on the solving operators is assumed. The presentation is complemented with examples and counterexamples to test the sharpness of the hypotheses involved, including a reaction-diffusion equation, a discontinuous ordinary differential equation and an irregular form of the heat equation.

On the global regularity for the supercritical SQG equation

We consider the initial value problem for the fractionally dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation \[ \partial_t θ+ \mathcal{R}^\perp θ\cdot \nabla θ+ Λ^γθ= 0, \qquad θ(\cdot,0) =θ_0 \] on $\mathbb{T}^2 = [0,1]^2$, with $γ\in (0,1)$. The coefficient in front of the dissipative term $Λ^γ= (-Δ)^{γ/2}$ is normalized to $1$. We show that given a smooth initial datum with $\|θ_0\|_{L^2}^{γ/2} \|θ_0\|_{\dot{H}^2}^{1-γ/2}\leq R$, where {\em $R$ is arbitrarily large}, there exists $γ_1 = γ_1(R) \in (0,1)$ such that for $γ\geq γ_1$, the solution of the supercritical SQG equation with dissipation $Λ^γ$ does not blow up in finite time. The main ingredient in the proof is a new concise proof of eventual regularity for the supercritical SQG equation, that relies solely on nonlinear lower bounds for the fractional Laplacian and the maximum principle.

Singular limits of Voigt models in fluid dynamics

We investigate the long-term behavior, as a certain regularization parameter vanishes, of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes-Voigt model of a viscoelastic incompressible fluid. We prove the existence of global and exponential attractors of optimal regularity. We then derive explicit upper bounds for the dimension of these attractors in terms of the three-dimensional Grashof number and the regularization parameter. Finally, we also prove convergence of the (strong) global attractor of the 3D Navier-Stokes-Voigt model to the (weak) global attractor of the 3D Navier-Stokes equation. Our analysis improves and extends recent results obtained by Kalantarov and Titi in [31].

The primitive equations of the atmosphere in presence of vapor saturation

A modification of the classical primitive equations of the atmosphere is considered in order to take into account important phase transition phenomena due to air saturation and condensation. We provide a mathematical formulation of the problem that appears to be new in this setting, by making use of differential inclusions and variational inequalities, and which allows to develop a rather complete theory for the solutions to what turns out to be a nonlinearly coupled system of non-smooth partial differential equations. Specifically we prove global existence of quasi-strong and strong solutions, along with uniqueness results and maximum principles of physical interest.

Multivalued Attractors and their Approximation: Applications to the Navier-Stokes equations

This article is devoted to the study of multivalued semigroups and their asymptotic behavior, with particular attention to iterations of set-valued mappings. After developing a general abstract framework, we present an application to a time discretization of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. More precisely, we prove that the fully implicit Euler scheme generates a family of discrete multivalued dynamical systems, whose global attractors converge to the global attractor of the continuous system as the time-step parameter approaches zero.
