Numerical simulation of hydraulic fracturing: a hybrid FEM based algorithm

In this paper a problem of numerical simulation of hydraulic fractures is considered. An efficient algorithm of solution is proposed for the plain strain model of hydraulic fracturing. The algorithm utilizes a FEM based subroutine to compute deformation of the fractured material. The flow of generalized Newtonian fluid in the fracture is modelled in the framework of lubrication theory. In this way, the architecture of the computational scheme is relatively simple and enables one to deal with advanced cases of the fractured material properties and configurations as well as various rheological models of fluid. In particular, the problems of poroelasticity, plasticity and spatially varying properties of the fractured material can be analyzed. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm are verified against analytical benchmark solutions. The algorithm capabilities are demonstrated using the example of the hydraulic fracture propagating in complex geological settings.

A simplified modelling of hydraulic fractures in elasto-plastic materials

In this paper the problem of a plane strain hydraulic fracture propagating in an elasto-plastic material is analyzed. A new stress redistribution model for the proximity of the fracture tip is formulated and a resulting plasticity-dependent crack propagation condition is introduced. A modified variant of the KGD problem that accounts for the plastic deformations in the near-tip zone only is proposed. It is demonstrated that this model can be a credible substitute for the full elasto-plastic hydraulic fracture problem in the case of moderate plastic deformation. The crack-tip shielding effect introduced by the plastic deformation is quantified.

On the application of simplified rheological models of fluid in the hydraulic fracture problems

In this paper we analyse a problem of a hydraulic fracture driven by a non-Newtonian shear-thinning fluid. For the PKN fracture geometry we consider three different rheological models of fluid: i) the Carreau fluid, ii) the truncated power-law fluid, iii) the power-law fluid. For each of these models a number of simulations are performed. The results are post-processed and compared with each other in order to find decisive factors for similarities/dissimilarities. It is shown that under certain conditions even the basic power-law rheology can be a good substitute for the Carreau characteristics. Although for a particular fluid such a conclusion cannot be made a priori, post-processing based on average values of the fluid shear rates is a very good tool to verify credibility of the results obtained for simplified rheological models. The truncated power-law rheology is a good alternative for the Carreau model. It always produces results that are very similar to those obtained with the equivalent Carreau fluid and simultaneously provides a relative ease of numerical implementation.

An efficient algorithm of solution for the flow of generalized Newtonian fluid in channels of simple geometries

In this paper a problem of stationary flow of generalized Newtonian fluid in a thin channel is considered. An efficient algorithm of solution is proposed that includes a flexible procedure for a continuous approximation of the apparent viscosity by means of elementary functions combined with analytical integration of the governing equations. The algorithm can be easily adapted to circular or elliptic conduits. The accuracy and efficiency of computations are analyzed using an example of the Carreau fluid. The proposed computational scheme proves to be highly efficient and versatile providing excellent accuracy of solution at a very low computational cost.

Energy Release Rate in hydraulic fracture: can we neglect an impact of the hydraulically induced shear stress?

A novel hydraulic fracture (HF) formulation is introduced which accounts for the hydraulically induced shear stress at the crack faces. It utilizes a general form of the elasticity operator alongside a revised fracture propagation condition based on the critical value of the energy release rate. It is shown that the revised formulation describes the underlying physics of HF in a more accurate way and is in agreement with the asymptotic behaviour of the linear elastic fracture mechanics. A number of numerical simulations by means of the universal HF algorithm previously developed in Wrobel & Mishuris (2015) are performed in order to: i) compare the modified HF formulation with its classic counterpart and ii) investigate the peculiarities of the former. Computational advantages of the revised HF model are demonstrated. Asymptotic estimations of the main solution elements are provided for the cases of small and large toughness. The modified formulation opens new ways to analyse the physical phenomenon of HF and also improves the reliability and efficiency of its numerical simulations.

Particle velocity based universal algorithm for numerical simulation of hydraulic fractures

In the paper, we propose a new effective mathematical formulation and resulting universal numerical algorithm capable of tackling various HF models in the framework of a unified approach. The presented numerical scheme is not limited to any particular elasticity model or crack propagation regime. Its basic assumptions are: i) proper choice of independent and dependent variables (with the direct utilization of a new one - the reduced particle velocity), ii) tracing the fracture front by use of the speed equation which can be integrated in a closed form and sets an explicit relation between the crack propagation speed and the coefficients in the asymptotic expansion of the crack opening, iii) proper regularization techniques, iv) improved temporal approximation, v) modular algorithm architecture. The application of the new dependent variable, the reduced particle velocity, instead of the usual fluid flow rate, facilitates the computation of the crack propagation speed from the local relation based on the speed equation. As a result, the position of the crack front is accurately determined from an explicit formula derived from the speed equation. The underlying ideas employed in the algorithm are combined together producing a robust and efficient numerical scheme. Its performance is demonstrated using classical examples of 1D models for hydraulic fracturing: PKN and KGD under various fracture propagation regimes. Solution accuracy is verified against dedicated analytical benchmarks and other solutions available in the literature. Most of the ideas developed here, can be directly extended to more general 2D and 3D cases.

Universal hydrofracturing algorithm for shear-thinning fluids: particle velocity based simulation

A universal particle velocity based algorithm for simulating hydraulic fractures, previously proposed for Newtonian fluids, is extended to the class of shear-thinning fluids. The scheme is not limited to any particular elasticity operator or crack propagation regime. The computations are based on two dependent variables: the crack opening and the reduced particle velocity. The application of the latter facilitates utilization of the local condition of Stefan type (speed equation) to trace the fracture front. The condition is given in a general explicit form which relates the crack propagation speed (and the crack length) to the solution tip asymptotics. The utilization of a modular structure, and the adaptive character of its basic blocks, result in a flexible numerical scheme. The computational accuracy of the proposed algorithm is validated against a number of analytical benchmark solutions.

Efficient pseudo-spectral solvers for the PKN model of hydrofracturing

In the paper, a novel algorithm employing pseudo-spectral approach is developed for the PKN model of hydrofracturing. The respective solvers based on this approach compute both the solution and its temporal derivative. In comparison with conventional solvers, they demonstrate excellent cost effectiveness in terms of balance between the accuracy of computations and densities of the temporal and spatial meshes. Various leak-off regimes are considered.

On modeling hydraulic fracture in proper variables: stiffness, accuracy, sensitivity

The problem of hydraulic fracture propagation is considered by using its recently suggested modified formulation in terms of the particle velocity, the opening in the proper degree, appropriate spatial coordinates and $\varepsilon$-regularization. We show that the formulation may serve for significant increasing the efficiency of numerical tracing the fracture propagation. Its advantages are illustrated by re-visiting the Nordgren problem. It is shown that the modified formulation facilitates (i) possibility to have various stiffness of differential equations resulting after spatial discretization, (ii) obtaining highly accurate and stable numerical results with moderate computational effort, and (iii) sensitivity analysis. The exposition is extensively illustrated by numerical examples.
