SU(5)SU(5) grand unification and WW-boson mass

A realistic extension of the minimal SU(5)SU(5) theory consisting of the addition of an adjoint fermion is known to predict light real fermion and scalar weak triplets, potentially accessible at the LHC. These particles, in addition to playing a key role in gauge coupling unification, have profound phenomenological implications. The fermion triplet, that through the seesaw mechanism offers a testable origin of neutrino mass, has been already extensively discussed. The scalar triplet develops a vacuum expectation value that modifies the WW-boson mass. We show that its low-energy effective theory is remarkably predictive: in the leading approximation, all the relevant physical processes involving the scalar triplet depend only on its mass and the deviation from the Standard Model WW-mass value.

Background Field Method and Initial-Time Singularity for Coherent States

The background field method is adopted for studying the dynamics of coherent states within an interacting scalar field theory. Focusing on a coherent state that corresponds to the homogeneous condensate, the quantum depletion of the expectation value of the field-operator is demonstrated to be due to the annihilation of the condensate constituents into relativistic quanta. Moreover, due to the fact that the initial field acceleration and energy for the non-squeezed coherent states are determined in terms of bare coupling constant, instead of the renormalized one, the appearance of perturbative singularities is shown to be inevitable. In other words, consistency of these states requires the finiteness of the bare coupling constant, through the resummation.

On the viability of Locked Inflation

We review locked inflation and we critically address phenomenological and consistency issues thathave appeared in the literature. A natural window of opportunity is found for the original scenario. Moreover, a simple way to enlarge the parameter space is proposed by considering an equivalentlynatural structure for the locking field. Finally, an estimate of the amount of topological defects atthe end of inflation is given; due to the low inflationary scale, it turns out to be negligible.
