Baryon-baryon, meson-meson, and meson-baryon interactions in nonrelativistic QCD

Van der Waals potentials describing interactions between color-singlet mesons and/or baryons vanish at leading order in potential nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (pNRQCD). This result and constraints from Gauss's law are used to prove that weakly-coupled pNRQCD van der Waals potentials in generic non-Abelian gauge theories with only heavy quarks are too weak to form bound states whose color state is a product of color-singlets. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of four, five, and six quarks with equal masses provide numerical evidence that exotic color configurations are higher energy than products of color-singlet hadrons, suggesting that equal-mass fully-heavy tetraquark, pentaquark, and hexaquark bound states do not exist at next-to-leading order in pNRQCD and at all orders in QCD-like theories in which all quark masses are asymptotically large. Mechanisms for generating hadron-hadron bound states are identified, which necessarily involve large quark-mass hierarchies, relativistic effects arising from the presence of sufficiently light quarks, or nonperturbative effects outside the scope of weakly-coupled pNRQCD.

Collins-Soper Kernel for TMD Evolution from Lattice QCD

The Collins-Soper kernel relates transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) at different energy scales. For small parton transverse momentum $q_T\sim Λ_\text{QCD}$, this kernel is non-perturbative and can only be determined with controlled uncertainties through experiment or first-principles calculations. This work presents the first exploratory determination of the Collins-Soper kernel using the lattice formulation of Quantum Chromodynamics. In a quenched calculation, the $N_f=0$ kernel is determined at scales in the range 250 MeV $< q_T < 2$ GeV, and an analysis of the remaining systematic uncertainties is undertaken.

Neutron-Antineutron Operator Renormalization

Baryon number symmetry violating theories beyond the standard model with suppressed proton decay rates can be experimentally constrained by data on neutron-antineutron transition rates. In order to apply this constraints, theoretical predictions for the neutron-antineutron transition rates in various models must be available for comparison. Reliable predictions of transition rates between hadronic states must include non-perturbative quantum chromodynamic effects. These can be calculated in a model independent way by calculating six-quark operator matrix elements with lattice quantum chromodynamics. Preliminary lattice calculations have been performed, but operator renormalization effects must be included in order to match beyond the standard model calculations performed in $\overline{MS}$ renormalized perturbation theory with lattice regularized matrix element results. In particular, a perturbative calculation of the two-loop anomalous dimensions and one-loop renormalization scheme matching coefficients of these six-quark operators is necessary in order to determine leading order corrections at lattice matching scales. This describes our ongoing calculation of these perturbative operator renormalization effects.

Charge Symmetry Breaking and Parity Violating Electron-Proton Scattering

Charge symmetry breaking contributions to the proton's neutral weak form factors must be understood in order for future measurements of parity violating electron-proton scattering to be definitively interpreted as evidence of proton strangeness. We calculate these charge symmetry breaking form factor contributions using chiral perturbation theory with resonance saturation estimates for unknown low-energy constants. The uncertainty of the leading-order resonance saturation estimates is reduced by incorporating nuclear physics constraints. Higher-order contributions are investigated through phenomenological vertex form factors. We predict that charge symmetry breaking form factor contributions are an order of magnitude larger than expected from naive dimensional analysis but are still an order of magnitude smaller than current experimental bounds on proton strangeness. This is consistent with previous calculations using chiral perturbation theory with resonance saturation.

Numerical simulations with a first order BSSN formulation of Einstein's field equations

We present a new fully first order strongly hyperbolic representation of the BSSN formulation of Einstein's equations with optional constraint damping terms. We describe the characteristic fields of the system, discuss its hyperbolicity properties, and present two numerical implementations and simulations: one using finite differences, adaptive mesh refinement and in particular binary black holes, and another one using the discontinuous Galerkin method in spherical symmetry. The results of this paper constitute a first step in an effort to combine the robustness of BSSN evolutions with very high accuracy numerical techniques, such as spectral collocation multi-domain or discontinuous Galerkin methods.
