Experimental evidence for the influence of charge on the adsorption capacity of carbon dioxide on charged fullerenes

We show, with both experiment and theory, that adsorption of CO2CO_2 is sensitive to charge on a capturing model carbonaceous surface. In the experiment we dope superfluid helium droplets with C60C_{60} and CO2CO_2 and expose them to ionising free electrons. Both positively and negatively charged C60(CO2)n+/−C_{60}(CO_2)_n^{+/-} cluster ion distributions are observed with a high-resolution mass spectrometer and these show remarkable and reproducible anomalies in intensities that are strongly dependent on the charge. The highest adsorption capacity is seen with C60+C_{60}^+. Complementary density functional theory calculations and molecular dynamics simulations provided insight into the nature of the interaction of charged C60C_{60} with CO2CO_2 as well as trends in the packing of C60+C_{60}^+ and C60−C_{60}^-. The quadrupole moment of CO2CO_2 itself was seen to be decisive in determining the charge dependence of the observed adsorption features. Our findings are expected to apply to adsorption of CO2CO_2 by charged surfaces in general.

Fission of Multiply Charged Cesium and Potassium Clusters in Helium Droplets - Approaching the Rayleigh Limit

Electron ionization of helium droplets doped with cesium or potassium results in doubly and, for cesium, triply charged cluster ions. The smallest observable doubly charged clusters are Cs92+Cs_{9}^{2+} and K112+K_{11}^{2+}; they are a factor two smaller than reported previously. The size of potassium dications approaches the Rayleigh limit nRay for which the fission barrier is calculated to vanish, i.e. their fissilities are close to 1. Cesium dications are even smaller than nRay, implying that their fissilities have been significantly overestimated. Triply charged cesium clusters as small as Cs193+Cs_{19}^{3+} are observed; they are a factor 2.6 smaller than previously reported. Mechanisms that may be responsible for enhanced formation of clusters with high fissilities are discussed.

On Subthreshold Ionization of Helium Droplets, Ejection of He+, and the Role of Anions

The mechanism of ionization of helium droplets has been investigated in numerous reports but one observation has not found a satisfactory explanation: How are He+He^+ ions formed and ejected from undoped droplets at electron energies below the ionization threshold of the free atom? Does this path exist at all? A measurement of the ion yields of He+He^+ and He2+He_2^+ as a function of electron energy, electron emission current, and droplet size reveals that metastable He∗−He^{*-} anions play a crucial role in the formation of free He+He^+ at subthreshold energies. The proposed model is testable.
