Global Existence and Exponential Stability for a Nonlinear Thermoelastic Kirchhoff-Love Plate

We study an initial-boundary-value problem for a quasilinear thermoelastic plate of Kirchhoff \& Love-type with parabolic heat conduction due to Fourier, mechanically simply supported and held at the reference temperature on the boundary. For this problem, we show the short-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions under appropriate regularity and compatibility assumptions on the data. Further, we use barrier techniques to prove the global existence and exponential stability of solutions under a smallness condition on the initial data. It is the first result of this kind established for a quasilinear non-parabolic thermoelastic Kirchhoff & Love plate in multiple dimensions.

Multidimensional Thermoelasticity for Nonsimple Materials -- Well-Posedness and Long-Time Behavior

An initial-boundary value problem for the multidimensional type III thermoelaticity for a nonsimple material with a center of symmetry is considered. In the linear case, the well-posedness with and without Kelvin-Voigt and/or frictional damping in the elastic part as well as the lack of exponential stability in the elastically undamped case is proved. Further, a frictional damping for the elastic component is shown to lead to the exponential stability. A Cattaneo-type hyperbolic relaxation for the thermal part is introduced and the well-posedness and uniform stability under a nonlinear frictional damping are obtained using a compactness-uniqueness-type argument. Additionally, a connection between the exponential stability and exact observability for unitary $C_{0}$-groups is established.

On a Parabolic-Hyperbolic Filter for Multicolor Image Noise Reduction

We propose a novel PDE-based anisotropic filter for noise reduction in multicolor images. It is a generalization of Nitzberg & Shiota's (1992) model being a hyperbolic relaxation of the well-known parabolic Perona & Malik's filter (1990). First, we consider a `spatial' molifier-type regularization of our PDE system and exploit the maximal $L^{2}$-regularity theory for non-autonomous forms to prove a well-posedness result both in weak and strong settings. Again, using the maximal $L^{2}$-regularity theory and Schauder's fixed point theorem, respective solutions for the original quasilinear problem are obtained and the uniqueness of solutions with a bounded gradient is proved. Finally, the long-time behavior of our model is studied.

Analysis and Numerics for an Age- and Sex-Structured Population Model

We study a linear model of McKendrick-von Foerster-Keyfitz type for the temporal development of the age structure of a two-sex human population. For the underlying system of partial integro-differential equations, we exploit the semigroup theory to show the classical well-posedness and asymptotic stability in a Hilbert space framework under appropriate conditions on the age-specific mortality and fertility moduli. Finally, we propose an implicit finite difference scheme to numerically solve this problem and prove its convergence under minimal regularity assumptions. A real data application is also given.

Construction of Exact Control for a One-Dimensional Heat Equation with Delay

We prove an exact controllability result for a one-dimensional heat equation with delay in both lower and highest order terms and nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Moreover, we give an explicit representation of the control function steering the system into a given final state. Under certain decay properties for corresponding Fourier coefficients which can be interpreted as a sufficiently high Sobolev regularity of the data, both control function and the solution are proved to be regular in the classical sense both with respect to time and space variables.

On Classical Solvability for a Linear 1D Heat Equation with Constant Delay

In this paper, we consider a linear heat equation with constant coefficients and a single constant delay. Such equations are commonly used to model and study various problems arising in ecology and population biology when describing the temporal evolution of human or animal populations accounting for migration, interaction with the environment and certain aftereffects caused by diseases or enviromental polution, etc. Whereas dynamical systems with lumped parameters have been addressed in numerous investigations, there still remain a lot of open questions for the case of systems with distributed parameters, especially when the delay effects are incorporated. Here, we consider a general non-homogeneous one-dimensional heat equation with delay in both higher and lower order terms subject to non-homogeneous initial and boundary conditions. For this, we prove the unique existence of a classical solution as well as its continuous dependence on the data.

On Stability of Hyperbolic Thermoelastic Reissner-Mindlin-Timoshenko Plates

In the present article, we consider a thermoelastic plate of Reissner-Mindlin-Timoshenko type with the hyperbolic heat conduction arising from Cattaneo's law. In the absense of any additional mechanical dissipations, the system is often not even strongly stable unless restricted to the rotationally symmetric case, etc. We present a well-posedness result for the linear problem under general mixed boundary conditions for the elastic and thermal parts. For the case of a clamped, thermally isolated plate, we show an exponential energy decay rate under a full damping for all elastic variables. Restricting the problem to the rotationally symmetric case, we further prove that a single frictional damping merely for the bending compoment is sufficient for exponential stability. To this end, we construct a Lyapunov functional incorporating the Bogovskiĭ operator for irrotational vector fields which we discuss in the appendix.

On the Cauchy Problem for a Linear Harmonic Oscillator with Pure Delay

In the present paper, we consider a Cauchy problem for a linear second order in time abstract differential equation with pure delay. In the absence of delay, this problem, known as the harmonic oscillator, has a two-dimensional eigenspace so that the solution of the homogeneous problem can be written as a linear combination of these two eigenfunctions. As opposed to that, in the presence even of a small delay, the spectrum is infinite and a finite sum representation is not possible. Using a special function referred to as the delay exponential function, we give an explicit solution representation for the Cauchy problem associated with the linear oscillator with pure delay. In contrast to earlier works, no positivity conditions are imposed.

Solving the Linear 1D Thermoelasticity Equations with Pure Delay

We propose a system of partial differential equations with a single constant delay $τ> 0$ describing the behavior of a one-dimensional thermoelastic solid occupying a bounded interval of $\mathbb{R}^{1}$. For an initial-boundary value problem associated with this system, we prove a global well-posedness result in a certain topology under appropriate regularity conditions on the data. Further, we show the solution of our delayed model to converge to the solution of the classical equations of thermoelasticity as $τ\to 0$. Finally, we deduce an explicit solution representation for the delay problem.

Strong and Mild Extrapolated $L^2$-Solutions to the Heat Equation with Constant Delay

We propose a Hilbert space solution theory for a nonhomogeneous heat equation with delay in the highest order derivatives with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions in a bounded domain. Under rather weak regularity assumptions on the data, we prove a well-posedness result and give an explicit representation of solutions. Further, we prove an exponential decay rate for the energy in the dissipative case. We also show that lower order regularizations lead to ill-posedness, also for higher-order equations. Finally, an application with physically relevant constants is given.
