The moduli space of complex 5-dimensional Lie algebras

In this paper, we study the moduli space of all complex 5-dimensional Lie algebras, realizing it as a stratification by orbifolds, which are connected by jump deformations. The orbifolds are given by the action of finite groups on very simple complex manifolds. Our method of determining the stratification is based on the construction of versal deformations of the Lie algebras, which allow us to identify natural neighborhoods of the elements in the moduli space.

Topological recursion for the Poincare polynomial of the combinatorial moduli space of curves

We show that the Poincare polynomial associated with the orbifold cell decomposition of the moduli space of smooth algebraic curves with distinct marked points satisfies a topological recursion formula of the Eynard-Orantin type. The recursion uniquely determines the Poincare polynomials from the initial data. Our key discovery is that the Poincare polynomial is the Laplace transform of the number of Grothendieck's dessins d'enfants.

Periods of Strebel Differentials and Algebraic Curves Defined over the Field of Algebraic Numbers

In \cite{MP} we have shown that if a compact Riemann surface admits a Strebel differential with rational periods, then the Riemann surface is the complex model of an algebraic curve defined over the field of algebraic numbers. We will show in this article that even if all geometric data are defined over Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}, the Strebel differential can still have a transcendental period. We construct a Strebel differential qq on an arbitrary complete nonsingular algebraic curve CC defined over Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}} such that (i) all poles of qq are Q‾\overline{\mathbb{Q}}-rational points of CC; (ii) the residue of q\sqrt{q} at each pole is a positive integer; and (iii) qq has a transcendental period.

Ribbon Graphs, Quadratic Differentials on Riemann Surfaces, and Algebraic Curves Defined over Qˉ\bar Q

It is well known that there is a bijective correspondence between metric ribbon graphs and compact Riemann surfaces with meromorphic Strebel differentials. In this article, it is proved that Grothendieck's correspondence between dessins d'enfants and Belyi morphisms is a special case of this correspondence. For a metric ribbon graph with edge length 1, an algebraic curve over Qˉ\bar Q and a Strebel differential on it is constructed. It is also shown that the critical trajectories of the measured foliation that is determined by the Strebel differential recover the original metric ribbon graph. Conversely, for every Belyi morphism, a unique Strebel differential is constructed such that the critical leaves of the measured foliation it determines form a metric ribbon graph of edge length 1, which coincides with the corresponding dessin d'enfant.
