Synthetic versus distributional lower Ricci curvature bounds

We compare two standard approaches to defining lower Ricci curvature bounds for Riemannian metrics of regularity below $C^2$. These are, on the one hand, the synthetic definition via weak displacement convexity of entropy functionals in the framework of optimal transport, and the distributional one based on non-negativity of the Ricci-tensor in the sense of Schwartz. It turns out that distributional bounds imply entropy bounds for metrics of class $C^1$ and that the converse holds for $C^{1,1}$-metrics under an additional convergence condition on regularisations of the metric.

Anomalous solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic equations

The behavior of sufficiently regular solutions to semilinear hyperbolic equations has attracted a great deal of attention in the past decades, concerning local/global existence, finite time blow-up, critical exponents, and propagation of singularities. Solutions of lower regularity may exhibit unexpected (anomalous) propagation of singularities. The purpose of this paper is to present various striking examples that seemingly have not been addressed in the literature so far. The key issue is the interpretation of the nonlinear operations.

On the Measurability of Stochastic Fourier Integral Operators

This work deals with the measurability of Fourier integral operators (FIOs) with random phase and amplitude functions. The key ingredient is the proof that FIOs depend continuously on their phase and amplitude functions, taken from suitable classes. The results will be applied to the solution FIO of the transport equation with spatially random transport speed as well as to FIOs describing waves in random media.

Random set solutions to elliptic and hyperbolic partial differential equations

The past decades have seen increasing interest in modelling uncertainty by heterogeneous methods, combining probability and interval analysis, especially for assessing parameter uncertainty in engineering models. A unifying mathematical framework admitting the combination of a wide range of such methods is the theory of random sets, describing input and output of a structural model by set-valued random variables. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the mathematics behind this approach. The modelling and computational implications are discussed and demonstrated with the help of prototypical partial differential equations -- a scalar elliptic equation from elastostatics and hyperbolic systems arising in elastodynamics.

Transport in Stochastic Goupillaud Media

The paper addresses one-dimensional transport in a Goupillaud medium (a layered medium in which the layer thickness is proportional to the propagation speed), as a prototypical case of wave propagation in random media. Suitable stochastic assumptions and limiting procedures lead to characteristic curves that are Lévy processes. Solutions corresponding to the discretely layered medium are shown to converge to limits as the thickness of the layers goes to zero. The probability distribution of the limiting characteristic curves is explicitly computed and exemplified when the underlying Lévy process is an inverse Gaussian process.

Transport in a stochastic Goupillaud medium

This paper is part of a project that aims at modelling wave propagation in random media by means of Fourier integral operators. A partial aspect is addressed here, namely explicit models of stochastic, highly irregular transport speeds in one-dimensional transport, which will form the basis for more complex models. Starting from the concept of a Goupillaud medium (a layered medium in which the layer thickness is proportional to the propagation speed), a class of stochastic assumptions and limiting procedures leads to characteristic curves that are Lévy processes. Solutions corresponding to discretely layered media are shown to converge to limits as the time step goes to zero (almost surely pointwise almost everywhere). This translates into limits in the Fourier integral operator representations.

Propagation of singularities for generalized solutions to wave equations with discontinuous coefficients

This article addresses linear hyperbolic partial differential equations with non-smooth coefficients and distributional data. Solutions are studied in the framework of Colombeau algebras of generalized functions. Its aim is to prove upper and lower bounds for the singular support of generalized solutions for wave equations with discontinuous coefficients. New existence results with weaker assumptions on the representing families are required and proven. The program is carried through for various types of one- and multidimensional wave equations and hyperbolic systems.

The wave equation with a discontinuous coefficient depending on time only: generalized solutions and propagation of singularities

This paper is devoted to the investigation of propagation of singularities in hyperbolic equations with non-smooth oefficients, using the Colombeau theory of generalized functions. As a model problem, we study the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional wave equation with a discontinuous coefficient depending on time. After demonstrating the existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions in the sense of Colombeau to the problem, we investigate the phenomenon of propagation of singularities, arising from delta function initial data, for the case of a piecewise constant coefficient. We also provide an analysis of the interplay between singularity strength and propagation effects. Finally, we show that in case the initial data are distributions, the Colombeau solution to the model problem is associated with the piecewise distributional solution of the corresponding transmission problem.

Generalised Fourier integral operator methods for hyperbolic equations with singularities

This article addresses linear hyperbolic partial differential equations and pseudodifferential equations with strongly singular coefficients and data, modelled as members of algebras of generalised functions. We employ the recently developed theory of generalised Fourier integral operators to construct parametrices for the solutions and to describe propagation of singularities in this setting. As required tools, the construction of generalised solutions to eikonal and transport equations is given and results on the microlocal regularity of the kernels of generalised Fourier integral operators are obtained.

Symmetrisers and generalised solutions for strictly hyperbolic systems with singular coefficients

This paper is devoted to strictly hyperbolic systems and equations with non-smooth coefficients. Below a certain level of smoothness, distributional solutions may fail to exist. We construct generalised solutions in the Colombeau algebra of generalised functions. Extending earlier results on symmetric hyperbolic systems, we introduce generalised strict hyperbolicity, construct symmetrisers, prove an appropriate Gårding inequality and establish existence, uniqueness and regularity of generalised solutions. Under additional regularity assumptions on the coefficients, when a classical solution of the Cauchy problem (or of a transmission problem in the piecewise regular case) exists, the generalised solution is shown to be associated with the classical solution (or the piecewise classical solution satisfying the appropriate transmission conditions).
