Theoretical predictions for inclusive $B\to X_u τ\barν$ decay

With the expected large increase in data sets, previously not measured decays will be studied at Belle II. We derive standard model predictions for the $B\to X_u τ\barν$ decay rate and distributions. The region in the lepton energy spectrum where higher-dimension operators in the local OPE need to be resummed into the $b$-quark light-cone distribution function is a significantly greater fraction of the phase space than for massless leptons. The finite $τ$ mass has the novel effect of shifting and squeezing how the distribution function enters the lepton energy spectrum. We also derive new predictions for the $τ$ polarization.

SCET, QCD and Wilson Lines

Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) is an effective field theory which describes the interactions of low invariant mass jets which are highly boosted with respect to one another. In the standard formulation of SCET, the effective Lagrangian for collinear fields is expanded in inverse powers of the energy. At leading order this leads to manifest decoupling of soft and collinear degrees of freedom; however, subleading terms in the effective Lagrangian violate this manifest decoupling. In this paper we point out that the collinear expansion in the SCET Lagrangian is unnecessary, and that the SCET Lagrangian may instead be written as multiple decoupled copies of QCD. The interactions between the sectors in full QCD are reproduced in the effective theory by an external current consisting of QCD fields coupled to Wilson lines. We illustrate this picture with two examples: dijet production and B->X_s + gamma.

Constraining weak annihilation using semileptonic D decays

The recently measured semileptonic D_s decay rate can be used to constrain weak annihilation (WA) effects in semileptonic D and B decays. We revisit the theoretical predictions for inclusive semileptonic D_{(s)} decays using a variety of quark mass schemes. The most reliable results are obtained if the fits to B decay distributions are used to eliminate the charm quark mass dependence, without using any specific charm mass scheme. Our fit to the available data shows that WA is smaller than commonly assumed. There is no indication that the WA octet contribution (which is better constrained than the singlet contribution) dominates. The results constrain an important source of uncertainty in the extraction of |Vub| from inclusive semileptonic B decays.

Phase Space and Jet Definitions in SCET

We discuss consistent power counting for integrating soft and collinear degrees of freedom over arbitrary regions of phase space in the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and illustrate our results at one loop with several jet algorithms: JADE, Sterman-Weinberg and k_T. Consistently applying SCET power-counting in phase space, along with non-trivial zero-bin subtractions, prevents double-counting of final states. The resulting phase-space integrals over soft and collinear regions are individually ultraviolet divergent, but the phase-space ultraviolet divergences cancel in the sum. Whether the soft and collinear contributions are individually infrared safe depends on the jet definition. We show that while this is true at one loop for JADE and Sterman-Weinberg, the k_T algorithm does not factorize into individually infrared safe soft and collinear pieces in dimensional regularization. We point out that this statement depends on the ultraviolet regulator, and that in a cutoff scheme the soft functions are infrared safe.

Perturbative corrections to the determination of Vub from the P+ spectrum in B->X_u l nu

We investigate the relation between the E_gamma spectrum in B->X_s gamma decay and the P+ spectrum in semileptonic B->X_u l nu decay (P+ is the hadronic energy minus the absolute value of the hadronic three-momentum), which provides in principle the theoretically simplest determination of Vub from any of the "shape function regions" of B->X_u l nu spectra. We calculate analytically the P+ spectrum to order alpha_s^2 beta_0, and study its relation to the B->X_s gamma photon spectrum to eliminate the leading dependence on nonperturbative effects. We compare the result of fixed order perturbation theory to the next-to-leading log renormalization group improved calculation, and argue that fixed order perturbation theory is likely to be a more appropriate expansion. Implications for the perturbative uncertainties in the determination of Vub from the P+ spectrum are discussed.

Subleading shape functions in B -> X_u l νand the determination of |Vub|

We calculate the subleading twist contributions to the endpoint of the inclusive lepton energy spectrum in B -> X_u l ν. We show that the same two subleading twist functions that appear in the decay B -> X_s γgovern the subleading effects in this decay. Using these results we find large O(Lambda/mB) corrections to the determination of |Vub| from the endpoint of the charged lepton spectrum. Using a simple model for the relevant subleading shape functions, we estimate the uncertainty in |Vub| from Lambda/mb corrections to be at the ~ 15% level for a lower lepton energy cut of 2.2 GeV.

Comment on studying the corrections to factorization in B -> D(*) X

We propose studying the mechanism of factorization in exclusive decays of the form B->D(*)X by examining the differential decay rate as a function of the invariant mass of the light hadronic state X. If factorization works primarily due to the large N_c limit then its accuracy is not expected to decrease as the X invariant mass increases. However, if factorization is mostly a consequence of perturbative QCD then the corrections should grow with the X invariant mass. Combining data for hadronic tau decays and semileptonic B decays allows tests of factorization to be made for a variety of final states. We discuss the examples of B->D^*π^+π^-π^-π^0 and B->D^*ωπ^-. The mode B->D^*ωπ^- will allow a precision study of the dependence of the corrections to factorization on the invariant mass of the light hadronic state.

Precision determination of |V_{ub}| from inclusive decays

We propose determining |V_{ub}| from inclusive semileptonic B decay using combined cuts on the leptonic and hadronic invariant masses to eliminate the b->c background. Compared to a pure dilepton invariant mass cut, the uncertainty from unknown order (Λ_{QCD}/m_b)^3 terms in the OPE is significantly reduced and the fraction of b->u events is roughly doubled. Compared to a pure hadronic invariant mass cut, the uncertainty from the unknown light-cone distribution function of the b quark is significantly reduced. We find that |V_{ub}| can be determined with theoretical uncertainty at the 5-10% level.

A Model Independent Determination of |V_{ub}|

It is shown that measuring the lepton invariant mass spectrum in inclusive semileptonic B -> X_u l nu decay yields a model independent determination of |V_{ub}|. Unlike the lepton energy and hadronic invariant mass spectra, nonperturbative effects are only important in the resonance region, and play a parametrically suppressed role when dΓ/dq^2 is integrated over q^2 > (m_B-m_D)^2, which is required to eliminate the charm background. Perturbative and nonperturbative corrections are presented to order α_s^2β_0 and Λ_{QCD}^2/m_b^2, and the Λ_{QCD}^3/m_b^3 corrections are used to estimate the uncertainty in our results. The utility of the B -> X_s l^+ l^- decay rate above the ψ(2S) resonance is discussed.

Phenomenology of V_ub from Ratios of Inclusive B Decay Rates

We explore the theoretical feasibility of extracting V_ub from two ratios built from B meson inclusive partial decays, R_1 = Gamma(b-> u cbar s)/3Gamma(b -> c l nu), and R_2 = [Gamma(b -> c X) - Gamma(b -> cbar X)]/Gamma(b -> c ubar d). We discuss contributions to these quantities from perturbative and nonperturbative physics, and show that they can be computed with overall uncertainties at the level of 10%.

The B -> X_s gamma Photon Spectrum

The photon energy spectrum in inclusive weak radiative B -> X_s gamma decay is computed to order alpha_s^2 beta_0. This result is used to extract a value for the HQET parameter $\barΛ$ from the average <1-2E_γ/m_B>, and a value of the parameter $λ_1$ from <(1-2E_γ/m_B)^2>. An accurate measurement of <1-2E_γ/m_B> can determine the size of the nonperturbative contributions to the Upsilon(1S) mass which cannot be absorbed into the b quark pole mass.

Hadronic Spectral Moments in Semileptonic B Decays With a Lepton Energy Cut

We compute the first two moments of the final hadronic invariant mass in inclusive semileptonic B decay, in the presence of a cut on the charged lepton energy. These moments may be measured directly by experiments at the Upsilon(4S) using the neutrino reconstruction technique, which requires such a cut. Measurement of these moments will place constraints on the nonperturbative parameters \barΛand λ_1, which are relevant for extracting the quark masses m_b and m_c, as well as the CKM angle V_cb. We include terms of order α_s^2β_0 and 1/m_b^3 in the operator product expansion, and use the latter to estimate the theoretical uncertainty in the extraction of \barΛand λ_1.

Bound States and Power Counting in Effective Field Theories

The problem of bound states in effective field theories is studied. A rescaled version of nonrelativistic effective field theory is formulated which makes the velocity power counting of operators manifest. Results obtained using the rescaled theory are compared with known results from NRQCD. The same ideas are then applied to study Yukawa bound states in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions, and to analyze when the Yukawa potential can be replaced by a delta-function potential. The implications of these results for the study of nucleon-nucleon scattering in chiral perturbation theory is discussed.

Higher Order QCD Corrections to $b\to c\overline{c}s$

We calculate the ${\cal O}(α_s^2 β_0 )$ corrections to the decay rate $b\rightarrow c\bar c s$. For reasonable values of $m_c/m_b$ this term is of the same order as both the one-loop and $\CO(α_s^2 \log^2 m_W/m_b)$ corrections to the decay rate. For $m_c/m_b=0.3$ the $\CO(α_s^2β_0)$ corrections enhance the rate by $\sim 18\%$ . We also discuss the $\CO(α_s^2β_0)$ corrections to $R_τ$, the $B$ semileptonic branching fraction and the charm multiplicity.

Phenomenology of the $1/m_Q$ Expansion in Inclusive $B$ and $D$ Meson Decays

We apply a recent theoretical analysis of hadronic observables in inclusive semileptonic heavy hadron decays to the phenomenology of $B$ and $D$ mesons. Correlated bounds on the nonperturbative parameters $\barΛ$ and $λ_1$ are derived by considering data from $B$ decays and, independently, data from $D$ decays. The two sets of bounds are found to be consistent with each other. The data from $B$ decays are then are used to extract a lower limit on the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|$. We address the issue of the convergence of the perturbative expansions used in the analysis, and compare our bounds on $\barΛ$ and $λ_1$ to lattice and QCD sum rule results. Finally, we argue that a comparison of the analyses of $D$ and $D_s$ decays provides evidence for the applicability of parton-hadron duality in the semileptonic decay of charmed hadrons.

Resumming Phase Space Logarithms in Inclusive Semileptonic $B$ Decays

We study logarithms of the form $\ln(m_q/m_b)$ which arise in the inclusive semileptonic decay of a bottom quark to a quark of mass $m_q$. We use the renormalization group to resum the leading radiative corrections to these terms, of the form $m_q^2α_s^n\ln^n(m_q/m_b)$, $m_q^3α_s^{n+1}\ln^n(m_q/m_b)$ and $m_q^4α_s^n\ln^{n+1}(m_q/m_b)$. The first two resummations are trivial, while the latter involves a non-trivial mixing of four-fermi operators in the $1/m_b$ expansion. We illustrate this technique in a toy model in which the semileptonic decay is mediated by a vector interaction, before treating the more complicated case of left-handed decay.

Hadron Spectra for Semileptonic Heavy Quark Decay

We calculate the leading perturbative and power corrections to the hadronic invariant mass and energy spectra in semileptonic heavy hadron decays. We apply our results to the $B$ system. Moments of the invariant mass spectrum, which vanish in the parton model, probe gluon bremsstrahlung and nonperturbative effects. Combining our results with recent data on $B$ meson branching ratios, we obtain a lower bound $\barΛ>410\,{\rm MeV}$ and an upper bound $m_b^{\rm pole}<4.89\,$GeV. The Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie scale setting procedure suggests that higher order perturbative corrections are small for bottom decay, and even tractable for charm decay.

Charm Mass Dependence of the $\CO(α_s^2 n_f)$ Correction to Inclusive $B\rightarrow X_c e\barν_e$ Decay

We compute the $α_s^2 n_f$ perturbative QCD contribution to semileptonic B decay, including the finite mass of the charm quark. This result provides an estimate of the size of the two-loop correction, which is found to be about 50\% of the one-loop correction. We use these results to set the scale for the one-loop correction using the scheme of Brodsky, Lepage and Mackenzie and find a BLM scale of $μ_{\rm BLM} = 0.13\, m_b$, when the inclusive semileptonic rate is expressed in terms of the $b$ and $c$ quark pole masses and the \msbar strong coupling. The two loop correction lies roughly midway between that obtained at $m_c=0$ and that obtained in the Shifman-Voloshin limit $m_b, m_c\gg m_b-m_c\ggΛ_{\rm QCD}$ while the corresponding BLM scale is somewhat closer to that obtained in the former case.

Perturbative Strong Interaction Corrections to the Heavy Quark Semileptonic Decay Rate

We calculate the part of the order $α_s^2$ correction to the semileptonic heavy quark decay rate proportional to the number of light quark flavors, and use our result to set the scale for evaluating the strong coupling in the order $α_s$ term according to the scheme of Brodsky, Lepage and Mackenzie. Expressing the decay rate in terms of the heavy quark pole mass $m_Q$, we find the scale for the $\overline{MS}$ strong coupling to be $0.07\, m_Q$. If the decay rate is expressed in terms of the $\overline{MS}$ heavy quark mass $\overline m_Q(m_Q)$ then the scale is $0.12\, m_Q$. We use these results along with the existing calculations for hadronic $τ$ decay to calculate the BLM scale for the nonleptonic decay width and the semileptonic branching ratio. The implications for the value of $|V_{bc}|$ extracted from the inclusive semileptonic $B$ meson decay rate are discussed.

Extracting $|V_{bc}|$, $m_c$ and $m_b$ from Inclusive $D$ and $B$ Decays

Using recent results for nonperturbative contributions to the $B$ and $D$ meson inclusive semileptonic widths, a model independent extraction of $\vbc$, $m_c$ and $m_b$ is made from the experimentally measured $B$ and $D$ lifetimes and semileptonic branching ratios. Constraining the parameters of the HQET at $\CO(1/m_Q^2)$ by the $D$ semileptonic width, $\vbc$ is found to lie in the range $.040<\vbc< 0.057$. The $c$ and $b$ quark masses are not well constrained due to uncertainty in the relevant scale of $α_s$. These results assume the validity of perturbative QCD at the low scales relevant to semileptonic charm decay. Without making this assumption, somewhat less stringent bounds on $V_{bc}$ from $B$ decay alone may be obtained.

Heavy Quark Fragmentation to Baryons Containing Two Heavy Quarks

We discuss the fragmentation of a heavy quark to a baryon containing two heavy quarks of mass $m_Q\ggΛ_{\rm QCD}$. In this limit the heavy quarks first combine perturbatively into a compact diquark with a radius small compared to $1/Λ_{\rm QCD}$, which interacts with the light hadronic degrees of freedom exactly as does a heavy antiquark. The subsequent evolution of this $QQ$ diquark to a $QQq$ baryon is identical to the fragmentation of a heavy antiquark to a meson. We apply this analysis to the production of baryons of the form $ccq$, $bbq$, and $bcq$.

A QCD Calculation of the Interaction of Quarkonium with Nuclei

The interaction of quarkonium with nuclei is studied in the $m_Q\rightarrow \infty$ limit of QCD, where the binding energy is found to be exactly computable. The dominant contribution to the interaction is from two-gluon operators. The forward matrix elements of these two-gluon operators can be determined from the QCD scale anomaly, and from deep inelastic scattering. We apply our results to the $Υ$ and $J/ψ$, treating the $\qqbar$ interaction as purely Coulombic. We find the $Υ$ binds in nuclear matter with a binding energy of a few $\mev$, while for the $J/ψ$ binding is of order 10 $\mev$. For the $J/ψ$ in particular we expect confinement effects to produce large corrections to this result.

Chiral Perturbation Theory Analysis of the Baryon Magnetic Moments

Nonanalytic $m_q^{1/2}$ and $m_q\ln m_q$ chiral corrections to the baryon magnetic moments are computed. The calculation includes contributions from both intermediate octet and decuplet baryon states. Unlike the one-loop contributions to the baryon axial currents and masses, the contribution from decuplet intermediate states does not partially cancel that from octet intermediate states. The fit to the observed magnetic moments including $m_q^{1/2}$ corrections is found to be much worse than the tree level SU(3) fit if values for the baryon-pion axial coupling constants obtained from a tree level extraction are used. Using the axial coupling constant values extracted at one loop results in a better fit to the magnetic moments than the tree level SU(3) fit. There are three linear relations amongst the magnetic moments when $m_q^{1/2}$ corrections are included, and one relation including $m_q^{1/2}$, $m_q\ln m_q$ and $m_q$ corrections. These relations are independent of the axial coupling constants of the baryons and agree well with experiment.

Reparameterisation Invariance Constraints on Heavy Particle Effective Field Theories

Since fields in the heavy quark effective theory are described by both a velocity and a residual momentum, there is redundancy in the theory: small shifts in velocity may be absorbed into a redefinition of the residual momentum. We demonstrate that this trivial reparameterisation invariance has non-trivial consequences: it relates coefficients of terms of different orders in the $1/m$ expansion and requires linear combinations of these operators to be multiplicatively renormalised. For example, the operator $-D^2/2m$ in the effective lagrangian has zero anomalous dimension, coefficient one, and does not receive any non-perturbative contributions from matching conditions. We also demonstrate that this invariance severely restricts the forms of operators which may appear in chiral lagrangians for heavy particles.

Semileptonic $B_c$ Decay and Heavy Quark Spin Symmetry

Semileptonic decay of the $B_c$ meson is studied in the heavy quark limit. The six possible form factors for $B_c \rightarrow B_s (B^0),B_s^* (B^{*0})$ semileptonic decay are determined by two invariant functions. Only one of these functions contributes at zero recoil, where it is calculable to lowest order in an operator product expansion in terms of the meson decay constant $f_B$ and the $B_c$ wavefunction. A similar result is found for $B_c \rightarrow D^0,D^{*0}$ and for $B_c\rightarrowη_c,J/ψ$ semileptonic decay for a restricted kinematic region. Semileptonic $B_c$ decay provides a means for determining the KM mixing angle $|V_{ub}|$.

Strong Decays of Excited Heavy Mesons In Chiral Perturbation Theory

We construct an effective Lagrangian describing the interaction of soft pions and kaons with mesons containing a heavy quark and light degrees of freedom in an orbital $p$ wave. The formalism is easily extended to heavy mesons and baryons in arbitrary excited states. We calculate the leading contributions to the strong decays $\dtwo\to\dπ$, $\dtwo\to\dstarπ$ and $\done\to\dstarπ$. We confirm the relations between the rates previously obtained by Isgur and Wise using heavy quark symmetry, and find that the absolute widths are consistent with na\"ıve power counting. We also estimate the branching ratios for the two pion decays $\dtwo\to\dstarππ$, $\done\to\dstarππ$ and $\done\to\dππ$, which are dominated by pole graphs. Our predictions depend on the masses and widths of the as yet unseen scalar-pseudovector $p$-wave doublet. Heavy quark spin symmetry predicts $Γ(\dtwo\to\dstarππ): Γ(\done\to\dstarππ):Γ(\done\to\dππ)=3:1:2$, but this relation is badly violated in practice because $1/M$ effects arising purely from kinematics are large.

The Residual Mass Term in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory

We reformulate the heavy quark effective theory in the presence of a residual mass term, which has been taken to vanish in previous analyses. While such a convention is permitted, the inclusion of a residual mass allows us to resolve a potential ambiguity in the choice of the expansion parameter which defines the effective theory. We show to subleading order in the mass expansion that physical quantities computed in the effective theory do not depend on the expansion parameter.
