Superconductivity near a quantum critical point in the extreme retardation regime

We study fermions at quantum criticality with extremely retarded interactions of the form $V(ω_l)=(g/|ω_l|)^γ$, where $ω_l$ is the transferred Matsubara frequency. This system undergoes a normal-superconductor phase transition at a critical temperature $T=T_c$. The order parameter is the frequency-dependent gap function $Δ(ω_n)$ as in the Eliashberg theory. In general, the interaction is extremely retarded for $γ\gg 1$, except at low temperatures $γ>3$ is sufficient. We evaluate the normal state specific heat, $T_c$, the jump in the specific heat, $Δ(ω_n)$ near $T_c$, and the Landau free energy. Our answers are asymptotically exact in the limit $γ\to\infty$. At low temperatures, we prove that the global minimum of the free energy is nondegenerate and determine the order parameter, the free energy, and the specific heat. These answers are exact for $T\to0$ and $γ>3$. We also uncover and investigate an instability of the $γ$ model: negative specific heat at $T\to0$ and just above $T_c$.

Electrically non-neutral ground states of stars

To approximately compute the non-relativistic ground state of an electrically non-neutral star, an exactly solvable model was recently introduced, and partly solved, by Krivoruchenko, Nadyozhin, and Yudin. The model generalizes the well-known Lane--Emden equation of a polytropic gas ball of index $n=1$ to a two-fluid setting. Here its complete solution is presented in terms of simple elementary functions; it is also generalized to a more-than-two-fluid setting where it remains exactly solvable. It is shown that, given the number of nuclei, a maximal negatively and a maximal positively charged solution exists, plus a continuous family of solutions which interpolates between these extremes. Numerical comparisons show that this exactly solvable model captures the qualitative behavior of the more physical model it is supposed to approximate. Furthermore, it correctly answers the question: how non-neutral can the star be? The answer is independent of the speed of light $c$ and the Planck quantum $h$. It supports Penrose's weak cosmic censorship hypothesis, in the sense that the bounds on the excess charge are compatible with the bound on the charge of a Reissner--Weyl--Nordström black hole.

On the asymptotic decay of the Schrödinger--Newton ground state

The asymptotics of the ground state $u(r)$ of the Schrödinger--Newton equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ was determined by V. Moroz and J. van Schaftingen to be $u(r) \sim A e^{-r}/ r^{1 - \|u\|_2^2/8π}$ for some $A>0$, in units that fix the exponential rate to unity. They left open the value of $\|u\|_2^2$, the squared $L^2$ norm of $u$. Here it is rigorously shown that $2^{1/3}3π^2\leq \|u\|_2^2\leq 2^{3}π^{3/2}$. It is reported that numerically $\|u\|_2^2\approx 14.03π$, revealing that the monomial prefactor of $e^{-r}$ increases with $r$ in a concave manner. Asymptotic results are proposed for the Schrödinger--Newton equation with external $\sim - K/r$ potential, and for the related Hartree equation of a bosonic atom or ion.

On the Dirac operator for a test electron in a Reissner--Weyl--Nordström black hole spacetime

The present paper studies the Dirac Hamiltonian of a test electron with a domain of bi-spinor wave functions supported on the static region inside the Cauchy horizon of the subextremal RWN black hole spacetime, respectively inside the event horizon of the extremal RWN black hole spacetime. It is found that this Dirac Hamiltonian is not essentially self-adjoint, yet has infinitely many self-adjoint extensions. Including a sufficiently large anomalous magnetic moment interaction in the Dirac Hamiltonian restores essential self-adjointness; the empirical value of the electron's anomalous magnetic moment is large enough. The spectrum of the subextremal self-adjoint Dirac operator with anomalous magnetic moment is purely absolutely continuous and consists of the whole real line; in particular, there are no eigenvalues. The same is true for the spectrum of any self-adjoint extension of the Dirac operator without anomalous magnetic moment interaction, in the subextremal black hole context. In the extremal black hole sector the point spectrum, if non-empty, consists of a single eigenvalue, which is identified.

Microscopic foundations of kinetic plasma theory: The relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations and their radiation-reaction-corrected generalization

It is argued that the relativistic Vlasov--Maxwell equations of the kinetic theory of plasma approximately describe a relativistic system of $N$ charged point particles interacting with the electromagnetic Maxwell fields in a Bopp--Landé--Thomas--Podolsky (BLTP) vacuum, provided the microscopic dynamics lasts long enough. The purpose of this work is not to supply an entirely rigorous vindication, but to lay down a conceptual road map for the microscopic foundations of the kinetic theory of special-relativistic plasma, and to emphasize that a rigorous derivation seems feasible. Rather than working with a BBGKY-type hierarchy of $n$-point marginal probability measures, the approach proposed in this paper works with the distributional PDE of the actual empirical 1-point measure, which involves the actual empirical 2-point measure in a convolution term. The approximation of the empirical 1-point measure by a continuum density, and of the empirical 2-point measure by a (tensor) product of this continuum density with itself, yields a finite-$N$ Vlasov-like set of kinetic equations which includes radiation-reaction and nontrivial finite-$N$ corrections to the Vlasov--Maxwell-BLTP model. The finite-$N$ corrections formally vanish in a mathematical scaling limit $N\to\infty$ in which charges $\propto 1/\surd{N}$. The radiation-reaction term vanishes in this limit, too. The subsequent formal limit sending Bopp's parameter $\varkappa\to\infty$ yields the Vlasov--Maxwell model.

The force on a point charge source of the classical electromagnetic field

It is shown that a well-defined expression for the total electromagnetic force $f^{em}$ on a point charge source of the classical electromagnetic field can be extracted from the postulate of total momentum conservation whenever the classical electromagnetic field theory satisfies a handful of regularity conditions. Amongst these is the generic local integrability of the field momentum density over a neighborhood of the point charge. This disqualifies the textbook Maxwell-Lorentz field equations, while the Maxwell-Bopp-Lande-Thomas-Podolsky field equations qualify, and presumably so do the Maxwell-Born-Infeld field equations. Most importantly, when the usual relativistic relation between the velocity and the momentum of a point charge with bare rest mass $m_b \neq 0$ is postulated, Newton's law $\dot{p} = f$ with $f = f^{em}$ becomes an integral equation for the point particle's acceleration; the infamous third-order time derivative of the position which plagues the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation of motion does not show up. No infinite bare mass renormalization is invoked, and no ad hoc averaging of fields over a neighborhood of the point charge. The approach lays the rigorous microscopic foundations of classical electrodynamics.

Dirac's point electron in the zero-gravity Kerr--Newman world

The results of a study of Dirac's Hamiltonian for a point electron in the zero-gravity Kerr--Newman spacetime are reported; here, "zero-gravity" means G to 0, where G is Newton's constant of universal gravitation, and the limit is effected in the Boyer--Lindquist coordinate chart of the maximal analytically extended, topologically nontrivial, Kerr--Newman spacetime. In a nutshell, the results are: the essential self-adjointness of the Dirac Hamiltonian; the reflection symmetry about zero of its spectrum; the location of the essential spectrum, exhibiting a gap about zero; and (under two smallness assumptions on some parameters) the existence of a point spectrum in this gap, corresponding to bound states of Dirac's point electron in the electromagnetic field of the zero-G Kerr--Newman ring singularity. The symmetry result of the spectrum extends to Dirac's Hamiltonian for a point electron in a generalization of the zero-G Kerr--Newman spacetime with different ratio of electric-monopole to magnetic-dipole moment. The results are discussed in the context of the general-relativistic Hydrogen problem. Also, some interesting projects for further inquiry are listed in the last section.

"Magic" numbers in Smale's 7th problem

Smale's 7-th problem concerns N-point configurations on the 2-dim sphere which minimize the logarithmic pair-energy V_0(r) = -ln r averaged over the pairs in a configuration; here, r is the chordal distance between the points forming a pair. More generally, V_0(r) may be replaced by the standardized Riesz pair-energy V_s(r)= (r^{-s} -1)/s, which becomes - ln r in the limit s to 0, and the sphere may be replaced by other compact manifolds. This paper inquires into the concavity of the map from the integers N>1 into the minimal average standardized Riesz pair-energies v_s(N) of the N-point configurations on the 2-sphere for various real s. It is known that v_s(N) is strictly increasing for each real s, and for s<2 also bounded above, hence "overall concave." It is (easily) proved that v_{-2}(N) is even locally strictly concave, and that so is v_s(2n) for s<-2. By analyzing computer-experimental data of putatively minimal average Riesz pair-energies v_s^x(N) for s in {-1,0,1,2,3} and N in {2,...,200}, it is found that {v}_{-1}^x(N) is locally strictly concave, while v_s^x(N) is not always locally strictly concave for s in {0,1,2,3}: concavity defects occur whenever N in C^{x}_+(s) (an s-specific empirical set of integers). It is found that the empirical map C^{x}_+(s), with s in {-2,-1,0,1,2,3}, is set-theoretically increasing; moreover, the percentage of odd numbers in C^{x}_+(s), s in {0,1,2,3}, is found to increase with s. The integers in C^{x}_+(0) are few and far between, forming a curious sequence of numbers, reminiscent of the "magic numbers" in nuclear physics. It is conjectured that the "magic numbers" in Smale's 7-th problem are associated with optimally symmetric optimal-energy configurations.

Order and Chaos in some Trigonometric Series: Curious Adventures of a Statistical Mechanic

This paper tells the story how a MAPLE-assisted quest for an interesting undergraduate problem in trigonometric series led some "amateurs" to the discovery that the one-parameter family of deterministic trigonometric series $\pzcS_p: t\mapsto \sum_{n\in\Nset}\sin(n^{-{p}}t)$, $p>1$, exhibits both order and apparent chaos, and how this has prompted some professionals to offer their expert insights. It is proved that $\pzcS_p(t) = α_p\rm{sign}(t)|t|^{1/{p}}+O(|t|^{1/{(p+1)}})\;\forall\;t\in\Rset$, with explicitly computed constant $α_p$. Experts' commentaries are reproduced stating the fluctuations of $\pzcS_p(t) - α_p{\rm{sign}}(t)|t|^{1/{p}}$ are presumably not Gaussian. Inspired by a central limit type theorem of Marc Kac, a well-motivated conjecture is formulated to the effect that the fluctuations of the $\lceil t^{1/(p+1)}\rceil$-th partial sum of $\pzcS_p(t)$, when properly scaled, do converge in distribution to a standard Gaussian when $t\to\infty$, though --- provided that $p$ is chosen so that the frequencies $\{n^{-p}\}_{n\in\Nset}$ are rationally linear independent; no conjecture has been forthcoming for rationally dependent $\{n^{-p}\}_{n\in\Nset}$. Moreover, following other experts' tip-offs, the interesting relationship of the asymptotics of $\pzcS_p(t)$ to properties of the Riemann $ζ$ function is exhibited using the Mellin transform.

The Hartree limit of Born's ensemble for the ground state of a bosonic atom or ion

The non-relativistic bosonic ground state is studied for quantum N-body systems with Coulomb interactions, modeling atoms or ions made of N "bosonic point electrons" bound to an atomic point nucleus of Z "electron" charges, treated in Born--Oppenheimer approximation. It is shown that the (negative) ground state energy E(Z,N) yields the monotonically growing function (E(l N,N) over N cubed). By adapting an argument of Hogreve, it is shown that its limit as N to infinity for l > l* is governed by Hartree theory, with the rescaled bosonic ground state wave function factoring into an infinite product of identical one-body wave functions determined by the Hartree equation. The proof resembles the construction of the thermodynamic mean-field limit of the classical ensembles with thermodynamically unstable interactions, except that here the ensemble is Born's, with the absolute square of the ground state wave function as ensemble probability density function, with the Fisher information functional in the variational principle for Born's ensemble playing the role of the negative of the Gibbs entropy functional in the free-energy variational principle for the classical petit-canonical configurational ensemble.

Convergent perturbative power series solution of the stationary Maxwell--Born--Infeld field equations with regular sources

The stationary Maxwell-Born-Infeld field equations of electromagnetism with integrable regular sources in a Hoelder space are solved using a perturbation series expansion in powers of Born's electromagnetic constant. The convergence of the power series for the fields is proved with the help of Banach algebra arguments and complex analysis. The finite radius of convergence depends on the norm of both, the Coulombfield generated by the charge density and the Amp`ere field generated by the current density. No symmetry is assumed.

Some uniqueness results for stationary solutions to the Maxwell-Born-Infeld field equations and their physical consequences

Uniqueness results are established for time-independent finite-energy electromagnetic fields which solve the nonlinear Maxwell--Born--Infeld equations in boundary-free space under the condition that either the charge or current density vanishes. In addition, it is also shown that the simpler Maxwell--Born equations admit at most a unique stationary finite-energy electromagnetic field solution, without the above condition. In these theories of electromagnetism, the following physical consequences emerge: source-free field solitons moving at speeds less than the vacuum speed of light $c$ do not exits; any purely electrostatic (resp. magnetostatic) field is the unique stationary electromagnetic field for the same current-density-free (resp. charge-density-free) sources. Our results put to rest some interesting speculations in the recent physics literature.

Hard-Sphere Fluids with Chemical Self-Potentials

Existence, uniqueness and stability of solutions is studied for a set of nonlinear fixed point equations which define self-consistent hydrostatic equilibria of a classical continuum fluid that is confined inside a container and in contact with either a heat and a matter reservoir, or just a heat reservoir. The local thermodynamics is furnished by the statistical mechanics of a system of hard balls, in the approximation of Carnahan-Starling. The fluid's local chemical potential per particle at is the sum of the matter reservoir's contribution and a self contribution which is computed by convoluting the fluid density distribution with a van der Waals, a Yukawa, or a Newton kernel. We prove the existence of a grand canonical phase transition, and a petit canonical phase transition which is embedded in the former.

Monotonicity of quantum ground state energies: Bosonic atoms and stars

The N-dependence of the non-relativistic bosonic ground state energy is studied for quantum N-body systems with either Coulomb or Newton interactions. The Coulomb systems are "bosonic atoms," with their nucleus fixed, and the Newton systems are "bosonic stars". In either case there exists some third order polynomial in N such that the ratio of the ground state energy to the respective polynomial grows monotonically in N. Some applications of these new monotonicity results are discussed.

The Vlasov continuum limit for the classical microcanonical ensemble

For classical Hamiltonian N-body systems with mildly regular pair interaction potential it is shown that when N tends to infinity in a fixed bounded domain, with energy E scaling quadratically in N proportional to e, then Boltzmann's ergodic ensemble entropy S(N,E) has the asymptotic expansion S(N,E) = - N log N + s(e) N + o(N); here, the N log N term is combinatorial in origin and independent of the rescaled Hamiltonian while s(e) is the system-specific Boltzmann entropy per particle, i.e. -s(e) is the minimum of Boltzmann's H-function for a perfect gas of "energy" e subjected to a combination of externally and self-generated fields. It is also shown that any limit point of the n-point marginal ensemble measures is a linear convex superposition of n-fold products of the H-function-minimizing one-point functions. The proofs are direct, in the sense that (a) the map E to S(E) is studied rather than its inverse S to E(S); (b) no regularization of the microcanonical measure Dirac(E-H) is invoked, and (c) no detour via the canonical ensemble. The proofs hold irrespective of whether microcanonical and canonical ensembles are equivalent or not.

A note on classical ground state energies

The pair-specific ground state energy of Newtonian N-body systems grows monotonically in N. This furnishes a whole family of simple new tests for minimality of putative ground state energies obtained through computer experiments. Inspection of several publically available lists of such computer-experimentally obtained putative ground state energies has yielded several dozen instances which failed (at least) one of these tests. Although the correct ground state energy is not revealed by this method, it does yield a better upper bound on it than the experimentally found value whenever the latter fails a monotonicity test. The surveyed N-body systems include in particular N point charges with 2- or 3-dimensional Coulomb pair interactions, placed either on the unit 2-sphere or on a 2-torus (a.k.a. Thomson, Fekete, or Riesz problems).

Misleading signposts along the de Broglie-Bohm road to quantum mechanics

Eighty years after de Broglie's, and a little more than half a century after Bohm's seminal papers, the de Broglie--Bohm theory (a.k.a. Bohmian mechanics), which is presumably the simplest theory which explains the orthodox quantum mechanics formalism, has reached an exemplary state of conceptual clarity and mathematical integrity. No other theory of quantum mechanics comes even close. Yet anyone curious enough to walk this road to quantum mechanics is soon being confused by many misleading signposts that have been put up, and not just by its detractors, but unfortunately enough also by some of its proponents. This paper outlines a road map to help navigate ones way.

Nonperturbative calculation of Born-Infeld effects on the Schroedinger spectrum of the hydrogen atom

We present the first nonperturbative numerical calculations of the nonrelativistic hydrogen spectrum as predicted by first-quantized electrodynamics with nonlinear Maxwell-Born-Infeld field equations. We also show rigorous upper and lower bounds on the ground state. When judged against empirical data our results significantly restrict the range of viable values of the new electromagnetic constant which is introduced by the Born-Infeld theory. We assess Born's own proposal for the value of his constant.

The Vlasov limit and its fluctuations for a system of particles which interact by means of a wave field

In two recent publications [Commun. PDE, vol.22, p.307--335 (1997), Commun. Math. Phys., vol.203, p.1--19 (1999)], A. Komech, M. Kunze and H. Spohn studied the joint dynamics of a classical point particle and a wave type generalization of the Newtonian gravity potential, coupled in a regularized way. In the present paper the many-body dynamics of this model is studied. The Vlasov continuum limit is obtained in form equivalent to a weak law of large numbers. We also establish a central limit theorem for the fluctuations around this limit.
