The Category Dichotomy for Ideals

We provide a counterexample to the Category Dichotomy in the framework of $\textsf{ZFC}$. That is, we prove the existence of an ideal on $ω$ that is not Katětov below $\mathsf{nwd}$ and does not have restrictions above $\mathcal{ED}$. We also prove that in the Laver model every tall $\mathsf{P}$-ideal is Katětov-Blass above $\mathcal{ED}_{\mathsf{fin}}$ and that it is consistent that every $\mathsf{Q}^{+}$ ideal is meager.

Combinatorial properties of MAD families

We study some strong combinatorial properties of $\textsf{MAD}$ families. An ideal $\mathcal{I}$ is Shelah-Steprāns if for every set $X\subseteq{\left[ ω\right]}^{<ω}$ there is an element of $\mathcal{I}$ that either intersects every set in $X$ or contains infinitely many members of it. We prove that a Borel ideal is Shelah-Steprāns if and only if it is Katětov above the ideal $\textsf{fin}\times\textsf{fin}$. We prove that Shelah-Steprāns $\textsf{MAD}$ families have strong indestructibility properties (in particular, they are both Cohen and random indestructible). We also consider some other strong combinatorial properties of $\textsf{MAD}$ families. Finally, it is proved that it is consistent to have $\mathrm{non}(\mathcal{M}) = {\aleph}_{1}$ and no Shelah-Steprāns families of size ${\aleph}_{1}$.

Simutaneously vanishing higher derived limits without large cardinals

A question dating to Sibe Mardešić and Andrei Prasolov's 1988 work Strong homology is not additive, and motivating a considerable amount of set theoretic work in the ensuing years, is that of whether it is consistent with the ZFC axioms for the higher derived limits $\mathrm{lim}^n$ $(n>0)$ of a certain inverse system $\mathbf{A}$ indexed by ${^ω}ω$ to simultaneously vanish. An equivalent formulation of this question is that of whether it is consistent for all $n$-coherent families of functions indexed by ${^ω}ω$ to be trivial. In this paper, we prove that, in any forcing extension given by adjoining $\beth_ω$-many Cohen reals, $\mathrm{lim}^n \mathbf{A}$ vanishes for all $n > 0$. Our proof involves a detailed combinatorial analysis of the forcing extension and repeated applications of higher dimensional $Δ$-system lemmas. This work removes all large cardinal hypotheses from the main result of arXiv:1907.11744 and substantially reduces the least value of the continuum known to be compatible with the simultaneous vanishing of $\mathrm{lim}^n \mathbf{A}$ for all $n > 0$.

Countably compact groups without non-trivial convergent sequences

We construct, in $\mathsf{ZFC}$, a countably compact subgroup of $2^{\mathfrak{c}}$ without non-trivial convergent sequences, answering an old problem of van Douwen. As a consequence we also prove the existence of two countably compact groups $\mathbb{G}_{0}$ and $\mathbb{G}_{1}$ such that the product $\mathbb{G}_{0} \times \mathbb{G}_{1}$ is not countably compact, thus answering a classical problem of Comfort.

Maximal almost disjoint families and pseudocompactness of hyperspaces

We show that all maximal almost disjoint families have pseudocompact Vietoris hyperspace if and only if $\mathsf{MA}_\mathfrak c (\mathcal P(ω)/\mathrm{fin})$ holds. We further study the question whether there is a maximal almost disjoint family whose hyperspace is pseudocompact and prove that consistently such families do not exist \emph{genericaly}, by constructing a consistent example of a maximal almost disjoint family $\mathcal A$ of size less than $\mathfrak c$ whose hyperspace is not pseudocompact.

Base Tree Property

Building on previous work of [BPS] we investigate $σ$-closed partial orders of size continuum. We provide both an internal and external characterization of such partial orders by showing that (1) every $σ$-closed partial order of size continuum has a base tree and that (2) $σ$-closed forcing notions of density $\mathfrak c$ correspond exactly to regular suborders of the collapsing algebra $Coll(ω_1, 2^ω)$. We further study some naturally ocurring examples of such partial orders.

Properties of functions with monotone graphs

A metric space (X,d) is monotone if there is a linear order < on X and a constant c>0 such that d(x,y) < c d(x,z) for all x<y<z in X. Properties of continuous functions with monotone graph (considered as a planar set) are investigated. It is shown, e.g., that such a function can be almost nowhere differentiable, but must be differentiable at a dense set, and that Hausdorff dimension of the graph of such a function is 1.

Parametrized $\diamondsuit$ principles

We will present a collection of guessing principles which have a similar relationship to $\diamond$ as cardinal invariants of the continuum have to $\CH$. The purpose is to provide a means for systematically analyzing $\diamond$ and its consequences. It also provides for a unified approach for understanding the status of a number of consequences of $\CH$ and $\diamond$ in models such as those of Laver, Miller, and Sacks.
