Atoms in boxes: from confined atoms to electron-atom scattering

We show that both confined atoms and electron-atom scattering can be described by a unified basis set method. The central idea behind this method is to place the atom inside a hard potential sphere, enforced by a standard Slater type basis set multiplied by a cutoff factor. For confined atoms, where the wall is placed close to the atomic nucleus, we show how the energy of the highest occupied atomic orbital and the static polarizability of helium and neon atoms evolve with the confinement radius. To our knowledge, these are the first confined atom polarizability calculations that include correlation, through the use of time-dependent density-functional theory. By placing the atom in a large spherical box, with a wall outside the electron density, we obtain scattering phase shifts using a recently developed method [M. van Faassen, A. Wasserman, E. Engel, F. Zhang, and K. Burke, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99}, 043005 (2007)]. We show that the basis set method gives identical results to previously obtained phase shifts for ee-H and ee-He+{}^{+} scattering.

Must Kohn-Sham Oscillator Strengths be Accurate at Threshold?

The exact ground-state Kohn-Sham(KS) potential for the helium atom is known from accurate wavefunction calculations of the ground-state density. The threshold for photoabsorption from this potential matches the physical system exactly. By carefully studying its absorption spectrum, we show the answer to the title question is no. To address this problem in detail, we generate a highly accurate simple fit of a two-electron spectrum near the threshold, and apply the method to both the experimental spectrum and that of the exact ground-state Kohn-Sham potential.

A new challenge for time-dependent density-functional theory

Time-dependent density functional theory is thought to work well for the test cases of He and Be atoms. We perform a quantum defect analysis of the s, p, and d Rydberg states of Be with accurate ground state Kohn-Sham potentials. The s- and p-quantum defects are well described by the ALDA, but fails badly for the d-quantum defect. The same failure is observed in case of He. This provides a new challenge for functional development in time-dependent density functional theory.
