Sublinear variance in Euclidean first-passage percolation

The Euclidean first-passage percolation model of Howard and Newman is a rotationally invariant percolation model built on a Poisson point process. It is known that the passage time between 0 and $ne_1$ obeys a diffusive upper bound: $\mbox{Var}\, T(0,ne_1) \leq Cn$, and in this paper we improve this inequality to $Cn/\log n$. The methods follow the strategy used for sublinear variance proofs on the lattice, using the Falik-Samorodnitsky inequality and a Bernoulli encoding, but with substantial technical difficulties. To deal with the different setup of the Euclidean model, we represent the passage time as a function of Bernoulli sequences and uniform sequences, and develop several "greedy lattice animal" arguments.

A random walk on the symmetric group generated by random involutions

The involution walk is the random walk on $S_n$ generated by involutions with a binomially distributed with parameter $1-p$ number of $2$-cycles. This is a parallelization of the transposition walk. The involution walk is shown in this paper to mix for $\frac{1}{2} \leq p \leq 1$ fixed, $n$ sufficiently large in between $\log_{1/p}(n)$ steps and $\log_{2/(1+p)}(n)$ steps. The paper introduces a new technique for finding eigenvalues of random walks on the symmetric group generated by many conjugacy classes using the character polynomial for the characters of the representations of the symmetric group. Monotonicity relations used in the bound also give after sufficient time the likelihood order, the asymptotic order from most likely to least likely permutation. The walk was introduced to study a conjecture about a random walk on the unitary group from the information theory of black holes.

Likelihood Orders for some Random Walks on the Symmetric Group

Several cycle lexicographical orders are found to describe the relative likelihood of elements of the random walks on the symmetric group generated by the conjugacy classes of transpositions, 3-cycles, and n-cycles. Spectral analysis finds sufficient time for the orders to hold. This partially answers a conjecture that the n-cycles are the least likely elements of the transposition walk on the symmetric group. A likelihood order contributes to understanding the total variation distance and separation distance for a random walk.
