Palatini Gauss-Bonnet theory

We consider a class of models in even spacetime dimensions $2n$ which share many similarities with Chern-Simons theories in odd spacetime dimensions $2n+1$. The independent dynamical variables of these models are a $GL(2n)$-connection and a metric in internal space. The action is a polynomial of degree $n$ in the curvature of the connection, with indices saturated by means of the metric and the Levi-Civita tensor. We show that the theory has no local degree of freedom in $2$ spacetime dimensions ($n=1$), where it can be reformulated as a constrained $BF$ model, but that its dynamics is more intrincate in higher dimensions ($n>1$), where local degrees of freedom are present. We treat in detail the cases of $2$ and $4$ spacetime dimensions.}

Eddington's theory of gravity and its progeny

We resurrect Eddington's proposal for the gravitational action in the presence of a cosmological constant and extend it to include matter fields. We show that the Newton-Poisson equation is modified in the presence of sources and that charged black holes show great similarities with those arising in Born-Infeld electrodynamics coupled to gravity. When we consider homogeneous and isotropic space-times we find that there is a minimum length (and maximum density) at early times, clearly pointing to an alternative theory of the Big Bang. We thus argue that the modern formulation of Eddington's theory, Born-Infeld gravity, presents us with a novel, non-singular description of the Universe.

Cosmology with Eddington-inspired Gravity

We study the dynamics of homogeneous, isotropic universes which are governed by the Eddington-inspired alternative theory of gravity which has a single extra parameter, $κ$. Previous results showing singularity-avoiding behaviour for $κ> 0$ are found to be upheld in the case of domination by a perfect fluid with equation of state parameter $w > 0$. The range $-1/3 < w < 0$ is found to lead to universes which experience unbounded expansion rate whilst still at a finite density. In the case $κ< 0$ the addition of spatial curvature is shown to lead to the possibility of oscillation between two finite densities. Domination by a scalar field with an exponential potential is found to also lead to singularity-avoiding behaviour when $κ> 0$. Certain values of the parameters governing the potential lead to behaviour in which the expansion rate of the universe changes sign several times before transitioning to regular GR-like behaviour.

Eddington-Born-Infeld action for dark energy and dark matter

We argue that Einstein gravity coupled to a Born-Infeld theory provides an attractive candidate to represent dark matter and dark energy. For cosmological models, the Born-Infeld field has an equation of state which interpolates between matter, w=0 (small times), and a cosmological constant w=-1 (large times). On galactic scales, the Born-Infeld field predicts asymptotically flat rotation curves.

A tensor instability in the Eddington inspired Born-Infeld Theory of Gravity

In this paper we consider an extension to Eddington's proposal for the gravitational action. We study tensor perturbations of a homogeneous and isotropic space-time in the Eddington regime, where modifications to Einstein gravity are strong. We find that the tensor mode is linearly unstable deep in the Eddington regime and discuss its cosmological implications.

A Note on Classical String Dynamics on AdS_3

We consider bosonic strings propagating on Euclidean adS_3, and study in particular the realization of various worldsheet symmetries. We give a proper definition for the Brown-Henneaux asymptotic target space symmetry, when acting on the string action, and derive the Giveon-Kutasov-Seiberg worldsheet contour integral representation simply by using Noether's theorem. We show that making identifications in the target space is equivalent to the insertion of an (exponentiated) graviton vertex operator carrying the corresponding charge. Finally, we point out an interesting relation between 3D gravity and the dynamics of the worldsheet on adS_3. Both theories are described by an SL(2,C)/SU(2) WZW model, and we prove that the reduction conditions determined on one hand by worldsheet diffeomorphism invariance, and on the other by the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions, are the same.

Notes on black holes and three dimensional gravity

These notes are the written version of two lectures delivered at the VIII Mexican School on Particles and Fields on November 1998. The level of the notes is basic assuming only some knowledge on Statistical Mechanics, General Relativity and Yang-Mills theory. After a brief introduction to the classical and semiclassical aspects of black holes, we review some relevant results on 2+1 quantum gravity. These include the Chern-Simons formulation and its affine Kac-Moody algebra, the asymptotic algebra of Brown and Henneaux, and the statistical mechanics description of 2+1 black holes. Hopefully, this contribution will be complementary with the review paper hep-th/9901148 by the same author, and perhaps, a shortcut to some recent developments in three dimensional gravity.

A note on covariant action integrals in three dimensions

We compute -in the saddle point approximation- the partition function for the 2+1 black hole using the Gibbons-Hawking approach. Some issues concerning the definition of thermodynamical ensembles are clarified. It is pointed out that the right action in covariant form is exactly equal to the Chern-Simons action with no added boundary terms. This action is finite, yields the right canonical free energy and has an extremum when the temperature and angular velocity are fixed. The correspondence with a 1+1 $CFT$ is indicated.
