Polycrystalline exchange-biased bilayers: magnetically effective vs. structural antiferromagnetic grain volume distribution

The magnetic characteristics of polycrystalline exchange-biased antiferromagnet/ferromagnet-bilayers are determined by a complex interplay of parameters, describing structural and magnetic properties of the material system, including in particular the grain volume distribution of the antiferromagnet. An ideal characterization of such systems would be a non-destructive determination of the relevant parameters for each individual grain. This is in most cases not feasible, since typical characterization methods do average over larger areas. Here, we show that it is however possible to determine averaged microscopic parameters from averaged macroscopic magnetic quantities measured by vectorial Kerr magnetometry in comparison to an elaborate model. In particular, we estimate the magnetically effective antiferromagnetic grain size distribution, being essential for the interface exchange coupling to the ferromagnetic layer. We found that the distribution of magnetically active grain sizes differs from the structural one, indicating that the antiferromagnetic order, relevant for the exchange bias, extends only over a part of the grains' structural volumes.

Translatory and rotatory motion of Exchange-Bias capped Janus particles controlled by dynamic magnetic field landscapes

Magnetic Janus particles (MJPs), fabricated by covering a non-magnetic spherical particle with a hemispherical magnetic in-plane exchange-bias layer system cap, display an onion magnetization state for comparably large diameters of a few microns. In this work, the motion characteristics of these MJPs will be investigated when they are steered by a magnetic field landscape over prototypical parallel-stripe domains, dynamically varied by superposed external magnetic field pulse sequences, in an aqueous medium. We demonstrate, that due to the engineered magnetization state in the hemispherical cap, a comparably fast, directed particle transport and particle rotation can be induced. Additionally, by modifying the frequency of the applied pulse sequence and the strengths of the individual field components, we observe a possible separation between a combined or an individual occurrence of these two types of motion. Our findings bear importance for lab-on-a-chip systems, where particle immobilization on a surface via analyte bridges shall be used for low concentration analyte detection and a particle rotation over a defined position of a substrate may dramatically increase the immobilization (and therefore analyte detection) probability.

Maximizing Hole Coherence in Ultrafast Photoionization of Argon with SPA-Optimization

Photoionization with attosecond pulses populates hole states in the photoion. Superpositions of hole states represent ideal candidates for time-dependent spectroscopy, for example via pump-probe studies. The challenge consists in identifying pulses that create coherent superpositions of hole states while satisfying practical constraints. Here, we employ quantum optimal control to maximize the degree of coherence between these hole states. To this end, we introduce a derivative-free optimization method with Sequential PArametrization update (SPA-optimization). We demonstrate the versatility and computational efficiency of SPA-optimization for photoionization in argon by maximizing the coherence between the $3s$ and $3p_0$ hole states using shaped attosecond pulses. We show that it is possible to maximize the hole coherence while simultaneously prescribing the ratio of the final hole state populations.
