Multiple cluster algebra structures for TCD maps I: theoretical framework

We introduce triple crossing diagram (TCD) maps, which encode projective configurations of points and lines, as a unified framework for constructions arising in various areas of geometry, such as discrete differential geometry, discrete geometric dynamics and hyperbolic geometry. We define two types of local moves for TCD maps, one of which is governed by the discrete Schwarzian KP (dSKP) equation, and establish their multi-dimensional consistency. We construct two distinct cluster structures on the space of TCD maps, called projective and affine cluster structures, and show that they are related via an operation called section. This framework organizes and unifies a wide range of examples, including Q-nets, Darboux maps, line complexes, T-graphs, t-embeddings, triangulations and geometric discrete integrable systems such as the pentagram map and cross-ratio dynamics, which are further developed in a companion paper and in (arXiv:2108.12692).

The Devron property

We introduce a criterion called the Devron property that a discrete dynamical system can possess. The Devron property is said to occur when a class of highly singular inputs of a mapping F are carried by some iterate of $F^{-1}$ to a class of highly singular inputs of $F^{-1}$. The inspiration for this definition is the discovery by R. Schwartz that the pentagram map exhibits this kind of behavior. We investigate occurrences of the Devron property in a number of different dynamical systems.

On singularity confinement for the pentagram map

The pentagram map, introduced by R. Schwartz, is a birational map on the configuration space of polygons in the projective plane. We study the singularities of the iterates of the pentagram map. We show that a "typical" singularity disappears after a finite number of iterations, a confinement phenomenon first discovered by Schwartz. We provide a method to bypass such a singular patch by directly constructing the first subsequent iterate that is well-defined on the singular locus under consideration. The key ingredient of this construction is the notion of a decorated (twisted) polygon, and the extension of the pentagram map to the corresponding decorated configuration space.
