A parsimonious model for intraday European option pricing

A stochastic model for pure-jump diffusion (the compound renewal process) can be used as a zero-order approximation and as a phenomenological description of tick-by-tick price fluctuations. This leads to an exact and explicit general formula for the martingale price of a European call option. A complete derivation of this result is presented by means of elementary probabilistic tools.

Full characterization of the fractional Poisson process

The fractional Poisson process (FPP) is a counting process with independent and identically distributed inter-event times following the Mittag-Leffler distribution. This process is very useful in several fields of applied and theoretical physics including models for anomalous diffusion. Contrary to the well-known Poisson process, the fractional Poisson process does not have stationary and independent increments. It is not a Lévy process and it is not a Markov process. In this letter, we present formulae for its finite-dimensional distribution functions, fully characterizing the process. These exact analytical results are compared to Monte Carlo simulations.

The near-extreme density of intraday log-returns

The extreme event statistics plays a very important role in the theory and practice of time series analysis. The reassembly of classical theoretical results is often undermined by non-stationarity and dependence between increments. Furthermore, the convergence to the limit distributions can be slow, requiring a huge amount of records to obtain significant statistics, and thus limiting its practical applications. Focussing, instead, on the closely related density of "near-extremes" -- the distance between a record and the maximal value -- can render the statistical methods to be more suitable in the practical applications and/or validations of models. We apply this recently proposed method in the empirical validation of an adapted financial market model of the intraday market fluctuations.

Optimizing a basket against the efficient market hypothesis

The possibility that the collective dynamics of a set of stocks could lead to a specific basket violating the efficient market hypothesis is investigated. Precisely, we show that it is systematically possible to form a basket with a non-trivial autocorrelation structure when the examined time scales are at the order of tens of seconds. Moreover, we show that this situation is persistent enough to allow some kind of forecasting.

Spectral densities of Wishart-Levy free stable random matrices: Analytical results and Monte Carlo validation

Random matrix theory is used to assess the significance of weak correlations and is well established for Gaussian statistics. However, many complex systems, with stock markets as a prominent example, exhibit statistics with power-law tails, that can be modelled with Levy stable distributions. We review comprehensively the derivation of an analytical expression for the spectra of covariance matrices approximated by free Levy stable random variables and validate it by Monte Carlo simulation.

Stochastic calculus for uncoupled continuous-time random walks

The continuous-time random walk (CTRW) is a pure-jump stochastic process with several applications in physics, but also in insurance, finance and economics. A definition is given for a class of stochastic integrals driven by a CTRW, that includes the Ito and Stratonovich cases. An uncoupled CTRW with zero-mean jumps is a martingale. It is proved that, as a consequence of the martingale transform theorem, if the CTRW is a martingale, the Ito integral is a martingale too. It is shown how the definition of the stochastic integrals can be used to easily compute them by Monte Carlo simulation. The relations between a CTRW, its quadratic variation, its Stratonovich integral and its Ito integral are highlighted by numerical calculations when the jumps in space of the CTRW have a symmetric Levy alpha-stable distribution and its waiting times have a one-parameter Mittag-Leffler distribution. Remarkably these distributions have fat tails and an unbounded quadratic variation. In the diffusive limit of vanishing scale parameters, the probability density of this kind of CTRW satisfies the space-time fractional diffusion equation (FDE) or more in general the fractional Fokker-Planck equation, that generalize the standard diffusion equation solved by the probability density of the Wiener process, and thus provides a phenomenologic model of anomalous diffusion. We also provide an analytic expression for the quadratic variation of the stochastic process described by the FDE, and check it by Monte Carlo.
