Composite dynamics in Sp($2N$) gauge theories

Sp($2N$) gauge theories with fermonic matter provide an ideal laboratory to build extensions of the standard model based on novel composite dynamics. Examples include composite Higgs along with top partial compositeness and composite dark matter. Without fermions, their study also complements those based on SU($N_c$) gauge theories with which they share a common sector in the large $N_c=2N$ limit. We report on our recent progress in the numerical studies of Sp($2N$) gauge theories discretised on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice. In particular, we present preliminary results for the low-lying mass spectra of mesons and chimera baryons in the theories with $N=2$. We also compute the topological susceptibility for various values of $N$, extrapolate the results to the large $N$ limit, and discuss certain universal properties in Yang-Mills theories.

Composite two-Higgs doublet model from dilaton effective field theory

We construct a composite two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) within the context of dilaton effective field theory. This EFT describes the particle spectrum observed in lattice simulations of a near-conformal $SU(3)$ gauge field theory. A second Higgs doublet is naturally accommodated within the EFT, used previously to construct a one-Higgs-doublet model. We explore the interplay of phenomenological and EFT requirements, supplemented by information from numerical lattice studies of the $SU(3)$ gauge theory with eight fundamental (Dirac) fermions. We build a viable model with moderate parameter tuning. In the relevant portion of parameter space, we match the model to a conventional general description of 2HDMs, and comment on the role of custodial symmetry (breaking) in the scalar potential. Contributions to the precision electroweak parameter $T$ provide a possible explanation for the recent measurement of the W-boson mass by CDF II.

Lattice studies of the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory with two fundamental and three antisymmetric Dirac fermions

We consider the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory coupled to $N_f=2$ fundamental and $n_f=3$ antisymmetric flavours of Dirac fermions in four dimensions. This theory serves as the microscopic origin for composite Higgs models with $SU(4)/Sp(4)$ coset, supplemented by partial top compositeness. We study numerically its lattice realisation, and couple the fundamental plaquette action to Wilson-Dirac fermions in mixed representations, by adopting a (rational) hybrid Monte Carlo method, to perform non-trivial tests of the properties of the resulting lattice theory. We find evidence of a surface (with boundaries) of first-order bulk phase transitions in the three-dimensional space of bare parameters (one coupling and two masses). Explicit evaluation of the Dirac eigenvalues confirms the expected patterns of global symmetry breaking. After investigating finite volume effects in the weak-coupling phase of the theory, for the largest available lattice we study the mass spectra of the lightest spin-0 and spin-1 flavoured mesons composed of fermions in each representation, and of the lightest half-integer spin composite particle made of fermions in different representations -- the chimera baryon. This work sets the stage for future systematical studies of the non-perturbative dynamics in phenomenologically relevant regions of parameter space.

The density of states method in Yang-Mills theories and first order phase transitions

Extensions of the standard model that lead to first-order phase transitions in the early universe can produce a stochastic background of gravitational waves, which may be accessible to future detectors. Thermodynamic observables at the transition, such as the latent heat, can be determined by lattice simulations, and then used to predict the expected signatures in a given theory. In lattice calculations, the emergence of metastabilities in proximity of the phase transition may make the precise determination of these observables quite challenging, and may lead to large uncontrolled numerical errors. In this contribution, we discuss as a prototype lattice calculation the first order deconfinement transition that arises in the strong SU(3) Yang-Mills sector. We adopt the novel logarithmic linear relaxation method, which can provide a determination of the density of states of the system with exponential error suppression. Thermodynamic observables can be reconstructed with a controlled error, providing a promising direction for accurate model predictions in the future.

Towards top-down holographic composite Higgs: minimal coset from maximal supergravity

Within the context of top-down holography, we study a one-parameter family of regular background solutions of maximal gauged supergravity in seven dimensions, dimensionally reduced on a 2-torus. The dual, four-dimensional confining field theory realises the global (spontaneous as well as explicit) symmetry breaking pattern SO(5)->SO(4). We compute the complete mass spectrum for the fluctuations of the 128 bosonic degrees of freedom of the five-dimensional gravity theory, which correspond to scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, axial-vector, and tensor bound states of the dual field theory, and includes particles with exotic SO(4) quantum numbers. We confirm the existence of tachyonic instabilities near the boundaries of the parameter space. We discuss the interplay between explicit and spontaneous symmetry breaking. The SO(5)/SO(4) coset might provide a first step towards the realisation of a calculable framework and ultraviolet completion of minimal composite Higgs models, if the four pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons are identified with the real components of the Higgs doublet in the standard model (SM), and a subgroup of SO(4) with the SU(2)xU(1) SM gauge group. We exhibit an example with an additional localised boundary term that mimics the effect of a weakly-coupled external sector.

Sp(4) gauge theories and beyond the standard model physics

We review numerical results for models with gauge group Sp(2N), discussing the glueball spectrum in the large-N limit, the quenched meson spectrum of Sp(4) with Dirac fermions in the fundamental and in the antisymmetric representation and the Sp(4) gauge model with two dynamical Dirac flavours. We also present preliminary results for the meson spectrum in the Sp(4) gauge theory with two fundamental and three antisymmetric Dirac flavours. The main motivation of our programme is to test whether this latter model is viable as a realisation of Higgs compositeness via the pseudo Nambu Goldstone mechanism and at the same time can provide partial top compositeness. In this respect, we report and briefly discuss preliminary results for the mass of the composite baryon made with two fundamental and one antisymmetric fermion (chimera baryon), whose physical properties are highly constrained if partial top compositeness is at work. Our investigation shows that a fully non-perturbative study of Higgs compositeness and partial top compositeness in Sp(4) is within reach with our current lattice methodology.

Color dependence of tensor and scalar glueball masses in Yang-Mills theories

We report the masses of the lightest spin-0 and spin-2 glueballs obtained in an extensive lattice study of the continuum and infinite volume limits of $Sp(N_c)$ gauge theories for $N_c=2,4,6,8$. We also extrapolate the combined results towards the large-$N_c$ limit. We compute the ratio of scalar and tensor masses, and observe evidence that this ratio is independent of $N_{c}$. Other lattice studies of Yang-Mills theories at the same space-time dimension provide a compatible ratio. We further compare these results to various analytical ones and discuss them in view of symmetry-based arguments related to the breaking of scale invariance in the underlying dynamics, showing that a constant ratio might emerge in a scenario in which the $0^{++}$ glueball is interpreted as a dilaton state.

Sp(4) gauge theories on the lattice: Quenched fundamental and antisymmetric fermions

We perform lattice studies of meson mass spectra and decay constants of the $Sp(4)$ gauge theory in the quenched approximation. We consider two species of (Dirac) fermions as matter field content, transforming in the 2-index antisymmetric and the fundamental representation of the gauge group, respectively. All matter fields are formulated as Wilson fermions. We extrapolate to the continuum and massless limits, and compare to each other the results obtained for the two species of mesons. In the case of two fundamental and three antisymmetric fermions, the long-distance dynamics is relevant for composite Higgs models. This is the first lattice study of this class of theories. The global $SU(4) \times SU(6)$ symmetry is broken to the $Sp(4) \times SO(6)$ subgroup, and the condensates align with the explicit mass terms present in the lattice formulation of the theory. The main results of our quenched calculations are that, with fermions in the 2-index antisymmetric representation of the group, the masses squared and decay constant squared of all the mesons we considered are larger than the corresponding quantities for the fundamental representation, by factors that vary between $\sim$1.2 and $\sim$2.7. We also present technical results that will be useful for future lattice investigations of dynamical simulations, of composite chimera baryons, and of the approach to large $N$ in the $Sp(2N)$ theories considered. We briefly discuss their high-temperature behaviour, where symmetry restoration and enhancement are expected.

The Dilaton Potential and Lattice Data

We study an effective field theory (EFT) describing the interaction of an approximate dilaton with a set of pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons (pNGBs). The EFT is inspired by, and employed to analyse, recent results from lattice calculations that reveal the presence of a remarkably light singlet scalar particle. We adopt a simple form for the scalar potential for the EFT, which interpolates among earlier proposals. It describes departures from conformal symmetry, by the insertion of a single operator at leading order in the EFT. To fit the lattice results, the global internal symmetry is explicitly broken, producing a common mass for the pNGBs, as well as a further, additive deformation of the scalar potential. We discuss sub-leading corrections arising in the EFT from quantum loops. From lattice measurements of the scalar and pNGB masses and of the pNGB decay constant, we extract model parameter values, including those that characterise the scalar potential. The result includes the possibility that the conformal deformation is clearly non-marginal. The extrapolated values for the decay constants and the scalar mass would then be not far below the current lattice-determined values.

Sp(4) gauge theories on the lattice: $N_f=2$ dynamical fundamental fermions

We perform lattice studies of the gauge theory with Sp(4) gauge group and two flavours of (Dirac) fundamental matter. The global SU(4) symmetry is spontaneously broken by the fermion condensate. The dynamical Wilson fermions in the lattice action introduce a mass that breaks the global symmetry also explicitly. The resulting pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons describe the SU(4)/Sp(4) coset, and are relevant, in the context of physics beyond the Standard Model, for composite Higgs models. We discuss scale setting, continuum extrapolation and finite volume effects in the lattice theory. We study mesonic composite states, which span representations of the unbroken Sp(4) global symmetry, and we measure masses and decay constants of the (flavoured) spin-0 and spin-1 states accessible to the numerical treatment, as a function of the fermion mass. With help from the effective field theory treatment of such mesons, we perform a first extrapolation towards the massless limit. We assess our results by critically comparing to the literature on other models and to the quenched results, and we conclude by outlining future avenues for further exploration. The results of our spectroscopic analysis provide new input data for future phenomenological studies in the contexts of composite Higgs models, and of dark matter models with a strongly coupled dynamical origin.

Sp(4) gauge theory on the lattice: towards SU(4)/Sp(4) composite Higgs (and beyond)

The Sp(4) gauge theory with two Dirac fundamental flavours provides a candidate for the microscopic origin of composite-Higgs models based on the SU(4)/Sp(4) coset. We employ a combination of two different, complementary strategies for the numerical lattice calculations, based on the Hybrid Monte Carlo and on the Heat Bath algorithms. We perform pure Yang-Mills, quenched computations and exploratory studies with dynamical Wilson fermions. We present the first results in the literature for the spectrum of glueballs of the pure Sp(4) Yang-Mills theory, an EFT framework for the interpretation of the masses and decay constants of the lightest pion, vector and axial-vector mesons, and a preliminary calculation of the latter in the quenched approximation. We show the first numerical evidence of a bulk phase transition in the lattice theory with dynamical Wilson fermions, and perform the technical steps necessary to set up future investigations of the mesonic spectrum of the full theory.

A spartan model for the LHC diphoton excess

We propose a simple model accommodating the reported 750 GeV diphoton excess seen in the first 13-TeV run of the LHC. It leads to testable predictions, in particular for di-lepton production, at higher integrated luminosity. We append to the minimal standard model a new gauge sector with its own SU(2) symmetry group. A new complex doublet scalar field provides mass for the new vectors and describes the 750-GeV resonance. An adequate rate for the diphoton signals, with resonant production via photon fusion, requires the VEV of the new scalar field to be somewhat less than the electroweak scale. This in turn requires the new heavy vectors to have sub-TeV masses and be relatively strongly coupled. A new global U(1) symmetry plays a key role. Current precision-electroweak constraints are respected.

Large mass hierarchies from strongly-coupled dynamics

Besides the Higgs particle discovered in 2012, with mass 125 GeV, recent LHC data show tentative signals for new resonances in diboson as well as diphoton searches at high center-of-mass energies (2 TeV and 750 GeV, respectively). If these signals are confirmed (or other new resonances are discovered at the TeV scale), the large hierarchies between masses of new bosons require a dynamical explanation. Motivated by these tentative signals of new physics, we investigate the theoretical possibility that large hierarchies in the masses of glueballs could arise dynamically in new strongly-coupled gauge theories extending the standard model of particle physics. We study lattice data on non-Abelian gauge theories in the (near-)conformal regime as well as a simple toy model in the context of gauge/gravity dualities. We focus our attention on the ratio $R$ between the mass of the lightest spin-2 and spin-0 resonances, that for technical reasons is a particularly convenient and clean observable to study. For models in which (non-perturbative) large anomalous dimensions arise dynamically, we show indications that this mass ratio can be large, with $R>5$. Moreover, our results suggest that $R$ might be related to universal properties of the IR fixed point. Our findings provide an interesting step towards understanding large mass ratios in the non-perturbative regime of quantum field theories with (near) IR conformal behaviour.

Spectrum-doubled Heavy Vector Bosons at the LHC

We study a simple effective field theory incorporating six heavy vector bosons together with the standard-model field content. The new particles preserve custodial symmetry as well as an approximate left-right parity symmetry. The enhanced symmetry of the model allows it to satisfy precision electroweak constraints and bounds from Higgs physics in a regime where all the couplings are perturbative and where the amount of fine-tuning is comparable to that in the standard model itself. We find that the model could explain the recently observed excesses in di-boson processes at invariant mass close to 2 TeV from LHC Run 1 for a range of allowed parameter space. The masses of all the particles differ by no more than roughly 10%. In a portion of the allowed parameter space only one of the new particles has a production cross section large enough to be detectable with the energy and luminosity of Run 1, both via its decay to WZ and to Wh, while the others have suppressed production rates. The model can be tested at the higher-energy and higher-luminosity run of the LHC even for an overall scale of the new particles higher than 3 TeV.

Constrained Flavor Breaking

We explore predictive flavor models based on subgroups of the standard-model $SU(3)^5$ flavor symmetry. Restricting to products of $SU(3)$, we find that a global $SU(3)^3$ flavor symmetry, broken only by two Yukawa spurions, leads to a relation among down-type quark, up-type quark and charged-lepton Yukawa matrices: $Y_d \propto Y_u Y_e^\dagger$. As a result, the charged-lepton mass ratios are expressed in terms of quark mass ratios and mixing angles. Large leptonic mixing angles appear to be natural and lead to contributions to flavor-changing neutral currents in the charged-lepton sector, which can be tested in future precision experiments.

Hyperscaling violation and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We consider a class of simplified models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking built in terms of their five-dimensional weakly-coupled gravity duals, in the spirit of bottom-up holography. The sigma-model consists of two abelian gauge bosons and one real, non-charged scalar field coupled to gravity in five dimensions. The scalar potential is a simple exponential function of the scalar field. The background metric resulting from solving the classical equations of motion exhibits hyperscaling violation, at least at asymptotically large values of the radial direction. We study the spectrum of scalar composite states of the putative dual field theory by fluctuating the sigma-model scalars and gravity, and discuss in which cases we find a parametrically light scalar state in the spectrum. We model the spontaneous breaking of the (weakly coupled) gauge symmetry to the diagonal subgroup by the choice of IR boundary conditions. We compute the mass spectrum of spin-1 states, and the precision electroweak parameter S as a function of the hyperscaling coefficient. We find a general bound on the mass of the lightest spin-1 resonance, by requiring that the indirect bounds on the precision parameters be satisfied, that implies that precision electroweak physics excludes the possibility of a techni-rho meson with mass lighter than several TeV.

Multiscale confining dynamics from holographic RG flows

We consider renormalization group flows between conformal field theories in five (six) dimensions with a string (M-theory) dual. By compactifying on a circle (torus) with appropriate boundary conditions, we obtain continuous families of confining four-dimensional theories parametrized by the ratio $Λ_{\rm {\tiny flow}}/Λ_{\rm \tiny{QCD}}$, with $Λ_{\rm \tiny{flow}}$ the scale at which the flow between fixed points takes place and $Λ_{\rm \tiny{QCD}}$ the confinement scale. We construct the dual geometries explicitly and compute the spectrum of scalar bound states (glueballs). We find a `universal' subset of states common to all the models. We comment on the modifications of these models, and the corresponding fine-tuning, required for a parametrically light `dilaton' state to be present. We also comment on some aspects of these theories as probed by extended objects such as strings and branes.

On the glueball spectrum of walking backgrounds from wrapped-D5 gravity duals

We compute the mass spectrum of glueball excitations of a special class of strongly-coupled field theories via their type-IIB supergravity dual. We focus on two subclasses of backgrounds, which have different UV-asymptotics, but both of which exhibit walking behavior, in the weak sense that the gauge coupling of the dual field theory exhibits a quasi-constant behavior at strong coupling over a range of energies, before diverging in the deep IR. We improve on earlier calculations, by making use of the fully rigorous treatment of the 5-dimensional consistent truncation, including the rigorous form of the boundary conditions. In both cases there is a parametrically light scalar glueball. In the first case, this is a physical state, while in the second case this result is unphysical, since the presence of higher-order operators in the dual field theory makes the whole (physical) spectrum depend explicitly on a (unphysical) UV-cutoff scale.

Gauge/gravity dualities and bulk phase transitions

We consider D7-branes probing several classes of Type IIB supergravity backgrounds, and study the classical problem of finding equilibrium configurations for the embedding functions. This is a method employed to model chiral symmetry breaking in the gravity dual of a strongly-coupled, confining gauge theory. We unveil and discuss a new type of phase transition appearing in the gravity systems, which is similar in nature and meaning to bulk phase transitions on the lattice. The existence of this genre of phase transition puts a new, intrinsic limit on the region of parameter space which can be used to study the physics of the dual field theory. We complete the analysis of D7 embeddings in wrapped-D5 supergravity backgrounds, and explain in what cases chiral-symmetry breaking is sensibly modelled by the gravity construction.

preprint2014arXiv

On the stability of multi-scale models of dynamical symmetry breaking from holography

We consider two classes of backgrounds of Type IIB supergravity obtained by wrapping D5-branes on a two-cycle inside the conifold. The field theory dual exhibits confinement and, in addition, a region in which the dynamics is walking, at least in the weak sense that the running of the coupling is anomalously slow. We introduce quenched matter in the fundamental, modelled by probe D7-branes which wrap an internal three-dimensional manifold and lie at the equator of the transverse two-sphere. In the space spanned by the remaining internal angle and the radial coordinate the branes admit two embeddings. The first one is U-shaped: the branes merge at some finite value of the radius. The second one is disconnected and extends along the entire radial direction at fixed angular separation. We interpret these two configurations as corresponding to chiral-symmetry breaking and preserving phases, respectively. We present a simple diagnostic tool to examine the classical stability of the embedding, based on the concavity/convexity conditions for the relevant thermodynamic potentials. We use this criterion to show that U-shaped probes that explore the walking region are unstable, hence providing a dynamical origin for the tachyonic mode found in the literature. Whenever this occurs, the disconnected solution becomes favored energetically. We find that in one of the two classes of backgrounds the U-shaped embedding is always unstable, and thus never realised dynamically. Consequently, these models cannot be used to describe chiral-symmetry breaking. In the second category of solutions, our analysis reveals the presence of a first-order phase transition between chiral-symmetry broken and restored phases. Interestingly, this is in the same class that contains a parametrically light scalar in the spectrum of glueballs of the dual field theory.

Correlators of Circular Wilson Loops from Holography

We study the correlators of two circular Wilson loops of different radii at strong coupling. In our setup one Wilson loop is located inside the other. We use holography to calculate the connected two-point function. Both an AdS background and a confining background are considered. As the computation for the confining case cannot be carried out analytically we solve the problem numerically. In the AdS case our results agree with similar holographic calculations. In the case of a confining background we find an asymptotic area law, in agreement with the result of the lattice strong coupling expansion. We also elaborate on the subtle issue of the interplay between connected and disconnected string worldsheets.

A composite light scalar, electro-weak symmetry breaking and the recent LHC searches

We construct a model in which electro-weak symmetry breaking is induced by a strongly coupled sector, which is described in terms of a five-dimensional model in the spirit of the bottom-up approach to holography. We compute the precision electro-weak parameters, and identify regions of parameter space allowed by indirect tests. We compute the spectrum of scalar and vector resonances, which contains a set of parametrically light states that can be identified with the electroweak gauge bosons and a light dilaton. There is then a little desert, up to 2-3 TeV, where towers of resonances of the vector, axial-vector and scalar particles appear.

A tale of two cascades: Higgsing and Seiberg-duality cascades from type IIB string theory

We construct explicitly new solutions of type IIB supergravity with brane sources, the duals of which are N = 1 supersymmetric field theories exhibiting two very interesting phenomena. The far UV dynamics is controlled by a cascade of Seiberg dualities analogous to the Klebanov- Strassler backgrounds. At intermediate scales a cascade of Higgsing appears, in the sense that the gauge group undergoes a sequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking steps which reduces its rank. Deep in the IR, the theory confines, and the gravity background has a non-singular end of space. We explain in detail how to generate such solutions, discuss some of the Physics associated with them and briefly comment on the possible applications.

Holographic Technidilaton and LHC searches

We analyze in detail the phenomenology of a model of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking inspired by walking technicolor, by using the techniques of the bottom-up approach to holography. The model admits a light composite scalar state, the dilaton, in the spectrum. We focus on regions of parameter space for which the mass of such dilaton is 125 GeV, and for which the bounds on the precision electroweak parameter S are satisfied. This requires that the next-to-lightest composite state is the techni-rho meson, with a mass larger than 2.3 TeV. We compute the couplings controlling the decay rates of the dilaton to two photons and to two (real or virtual) Z and W bosons. For generic choices of the parameters, we find a suppression of the decay into heavy gauge bosons, in respect to the analog decay of the standard-model Higgs. We find a dramatic effect on the decay into photons, which can be both strongly suppressed or strongly enhanced, the latter case corresponding to the large-N regime of the dual theory. There is a correlation between this decay rate of the dilaton into photons and the mass splitting between the techni-rho meson and its axial-vector partner: if the decay is enhanced in respect to the standard-model case, then the heavy spin-1 resonances are nearly degenerate in mass, otherwise their separation in mass is comparable to the mass scale itself.

The decay constant of the holographic techni-dilaton and the 125 GeV boson

We critically discuss the possibility that the 125 GeV boson recently discovered at the LHC is the holographic techni-dilaton, a composite state emerging from a strongly-coupled model of electroweak symmetry breaking. This composite state differs from the SM for three main reasons. Its decay constant is in general larger than the electroweak scale, hence suppressing all the couplings to standard model particles with respect to an elementary Higgs boson, with the exception of the coupling to photons and gluons, which is expected to be larger than the standard-model equivalent. We discuss three classes of questions. Is it possible to lower the decay constant, by changing the geometry of the holographic model? Is it possible to lower the overall scale of the strong dynamics, by modifying the way in which electroweak symmetry breaking is implemented in the holographic model? Is there a clear indication in the data that production mechanisms other than gluon-gluon fusion have been observed, disfavoring models in which the holographic techni-dilaton has a large decay constant? We show that all of these questions are still open, given the present status of theoretical as well as phenomenological studies, and that at present the techni-dilaton hypothesis yields a fit to the data which is either as good as the elementary Higgs hypothesis, or marginally better, depending on what sets of data are used in the fit. We identify clear strategies for future work aimed at addressing these three classes of open questions. In the process, we also compute the complete scalar spectrum of the two-scalar truncation describing the GPPZ model, as well as the decay constant of the holographic techni-dilaton in this model.

Towards the string dual of tumbling and cascading gauge theories

We build type IIB backgrounds that can be interpreted as the dual description of field theories in which the dynamics shows many non-trivial phenomena, generalizing the baryonic branch of the Klebanov-Strassler system. We illustrate the steps of the explicit construction with a particularly interesting example. The dual field theory exhibits the expected behavior of an N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory which, over different ranges of the radial direction, is undergoing a cascade of Seiberg dualities, a period of running, a cascade of Higgsings (tumbling) and finally gaugino condensation.

Light scalars from a compact fifth dimension

We consider a general five-dimensional sigma-model coupled to gravity, with any number of scalars and general sigma-model metric and potential. We discuss in detail the problem of the boundary conditions for the scalar fluctuations, in the case where the fifth dimension is compact, and provide a simple (and very general) algorithmic procedure for computing the spectrum of physical scalar fluctuations of the fully back-reacted system. Focusing in particular on the conditions under which the spectrum of scalar excitations (glueballs) contains parametrically light states, we apply the formalism to some especially simple toy models, which can be thought of as the gauge/gravity duals of strongly-coupled, non-conformal four-dimensional gauge theories. Our examples are chosen both within the context of phenomenological effective field theory constructions (bottom-up approach), and within the context of consistent truncations of ten-dimensional string theories in the supergravity limit (top-down approach). In one of the examples, a light dilaton is present in the spectrum in spite of the presence of a bad naked singularity in the deep IR, near which the RG flow of the dual theory is certainly very far away from any fixed point. If this feature were to persist in a complete model in which the singularity is resolved, this would prove that a light dilaton is to be expected in at least certain walking technicolor theories. We provide here all the technical details for testing this statement, once such a complete model is identified.

Towards multi-scale dynamics on the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler

We construct explicitly a new class of backgrounds in type-IIB supergravity which generalize the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. We apply a solution-generating technique that, starting from a large class of solutions of the wrapped-D5 system, yields the new solutions, and then proceed to study in detail their properties, both in the IR and in the UV. We propose a simple intuitive field theory interpretation of the rotation procedure and of the meaning of our new solutions within the Papadopoulos-Tseytlin ansatz, in particular in relation to the duality cascade in the Klebanov-Strassler solution. The presence in the field theory of different VEVs for operators of dimensions 2, 3 and 6 suggests that this is an important step towards the construction of the string dual of a genuinely multi-scale (strongly coupled) dynamical model.

A light scalar from walking solutions in gauge-string duality

We consider the type-IIB background generated by the strong-coupling limit of Nc D5 branes wrapped on S2, and focus our attention on a special class of solutions that exhibit walking behavior. We compute numerically the spectrum of scalar fluctuations around vacua of this class. Besides two cuts, and sequences of single poles converging on one of the branch points, the spectrum contains one isolated scalar, the mass of which is suppressed by the length of the walking region. Approximate scale-invariance symmetry in the walking region suggests that this be interpreted as a light dilaton, the pseudo-Goldstone boson of dilatations.

Lectures on walking technicolor, holography and gauge/gravity dualities

Dynamical electro-weak symmetry breaking is an appealing, strongly-coupled alternative to the weakly-coupled models based on an elementary scalar field developing a vacuum expectation value. In the first two sections of this set of lectures, I summarize the arguments, based on low-energy phenomenology, supporting walking technicolor as a realistic realization of this idea. This pedagogical introduction to walking technicolor, and more generally to the physics of extensions of the standard model, makes extensive use of effective field theory arguments, symmetries and counting rules. The strongly-coupled nature of the underlying interactions, and the peculiar quasi-conformal behavior of the theory, require to use non-perturbative methods in order to address many fundamental questions within this framework. The recent development of gauge/gravity dualities provides an ideal set of such non-perturbative instruments. The remaining two sections illustrate the potential of these techniques with two technical examples, one within the bottom-up phenomenological approach to holography in five-dimensions, the other within a more systematic top-down construction derived from ten-dimensional type-IIB supergravity.

Mass-degenerate Heavy Vector Mesons at Hadron Colliders

We study the LHC phenomenology of a couple of mass-degenerate heavy new gauge bosons with the quantum numbers of the Z and photon. We give a leading-order estimate of the number of events expected in Drell-Yan processes in terms of the parameters of the model (mass and coupling) and of the LHC machine specifications (luminosity and energy). We consider the feasibility of measuring a forward-backward asymmetry for various choices of the parameters and estimate the potential reach. We comment on how the results may affect future collider design and the results for a specific model of electro-weak symmetry breaking by way of example.

Towards holographic walking from N=4 super Yang-Mills

We propose that a holographic description of `walking' behaviour, namely quasi-conformal dynamics relevant for technicolor models, can be obtained from relevant deformations of N=4 super Yang-Mills. We consider deformations which drive the theory close to the N=1 Leigh-Strassler fixed point, eventually deviating from it in the deep IR. We use the Pilch-Warner dual supergravity description of the flow between the N=4 and the N=1 fixed points to focus on observables that only require knowledge of the walking region. These include large anomalous dimensions of quark bilinear operators, which we study via probe D7-branes. We also make a first attempt at describing the theory beyond the walking region by introducing an infrared cut-off, in the spirit of hard-wall models. In this case we find a light, dilaton-like scalar state, but whether this mode persists in the exact theory remains an open question.

Wilson Loops in string duals of Walking and Flavored Systems

We consider the VEV of Wilson loop operators by studying the behavior of string probes in solutions of Type IIB string theory generated by Nc D5 branes wrapped on an internal manifold. In particular, we focus on solutions to the background equations that are dual to field theories with a walking gauge coupling as well as for flavored systems. We present in detail our walking solution and emphasize various general aspects of the procedure to study Wilson loops using string duals. We discuss the special features that the strings show when probing the region associated with the walking of the field theory coupling.

Walking Dynamics from String Duals

Within the context of a String Theory dual to N=1 gauge theories with gauge group SU(Nc) and large Nc, we identify a class of solutions of the background equations for which a suitably defined dual of the gauge coupling exhibits the features of a walking theory. We find evidence for three distinct, dynamically generated scales, characterizing walking, symmetry breaking and confinement, and we put them in correspondence with field theory by an analysis of the operators driving the flow.
