Non-stationary dynamics of interspike intervals in neuronal populations

We study the joint dynamics of membrane potential and time since the last spike in a population of integrate-and-fire neurons using a population density framework. This leads to a two-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation that captures the evolution of the full neuronal state, along with a one-dimensional hierarchy of equations for the moments of the inter-spike interval (ISI). The formalism allows us to characterize the time-dependent ISI distribution, even when the population is far from stationarity, such as under time-varying external input or during network oscillations. By performing a perturbative expansion around the stationary state, we also derive an analytic expression for the linear response of the ISI distribution to weak input modulations.

Comparing apples to apples -- Using a modular and adaptable analysis pipeline to compare slow cerebral rhythms across heterogeneous datasets

Neuroscience is moving towards a more integrative discipline, where understanding brain function requires consolidating the accumulated evidence seen across experiments, species, and measurement techniques. A remaining challenge on that path is integrating such heterogeneous data into analysis workflows such that consistent and comparable conclusions can be distilled as an experimental basis for models and theories. Here, we propose a solution in the context of slow wave activity ($<1$ Hz), which occurs during unconscious brain states like sleep and general anesthesia, and is observed across diverse experimental approaches. We address the issue of integrating and comparing heterogeneous data by conceptualizing a general pipeline design that is adaptable to a variety of inputs and applications. Furthermore, we present the Collaborative Brain Wave Analysis Pipeline (Cobrawap) as a concrete, reusable software implementation to perform broad, detailed, and rigorous comparisons of slow wave characteristics across multiple, openly available ECoG and calcium imaging datasets.

Low-dimensional firing rate dynamics of spiking neuron networks

Starting from a spectral expansion of the Fokker-Plank equation for the membrane potential density in a network of spiking neurons, a low-dimensional dynamics of the collective firing rate is derived. As a result a $n$-order ordinary differential equation for the network activity can be worked out by taking into account the slowest $n$ modes of the expansion. The resulting low-dimensional dynamics naturally takes into account the strength of the synaptic couplings under the hypothesis of a not too fast changing membrane potential density. By considering only the two slowest modes, the firing rate dynamics is equivalent to the one of a damped oscillator in which the angular frequency and the relaxation time are state-dependent. The presented results apply to a wide class of networks of one-compartment neuron models.
