Global Weak Solutions of a Thermodynamically Consistent Diffuse Interface Model for Nonhomogeneous Incompressible Two-phase Flows with a Soluble Surfactant

We study a thermodynamically consistent diffuse interface model that describes the motion of a two-phase flow of two viscous incompressible Newtonian fluids with unmatched densities and a soluble surfactant in a bounded domain of two or three dimensions. The resulting hydrodynamic system consists of a nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes system for the (volume averaged) velocity $\mathbf{u}$ and a coupled Cahn-Hilliard system for the phase-field variables $ϕ$ and $ψ$ that represent the difference in volume fractions of the binary fluids and the surfactant concentration, respectively. For the initial boundary value problem with physically relevant singular potentials subject to a no-slip boundary condition for the fluid velocity and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for the phase-field variables and the chemical potentials, we first establish the existence of global weak solutions in the case of non-degenerate mobilities based on a suitable semi-implicit time discretization. Next, we prove the existence of global weak solutions for a class of general degenerate mobilities, with the aid of a new type of approximations for both the mobilities and the singular parts of the potential densities.

A stochastic Allen-Cahn-Navier-Stokes system with singular potential

We investigate a stochastic version of the Allen-Cahn-Navier-Stokes system in a smooth two- or three-dimensional domain with random initial data. The system consists of a Navier-Stokes equation coupled with a convective Allen-Cahn equation, with two independent sources of randomness given by general multiplicative-type Wiener noises. In particular, the Allen-Cahn equation is characterized by a singular potential of logarithmic type as prescribed by the classical thermodynamical derivation of the model. The problem is endowed with a no-slip boundary condition for the (volume averaged) velocity field, as well as a homogeneous Neumann condition for the order parameter. We first prove the existence of analytically weak martingale solutions in two and three spatial dimensions. Then, in two dimensions, we also estabilish pathwise uniqueness and the existence of a unique probabilistically-strong solution. Eventually, by exploiting a suitable generalisation of the classical De Rham theorem to stochastic processes, existence and uniqueness of a pressure is also shown.

On a system of coupled Cahn-Hilliard equations

We consider a system which consists of a Cahn-Hilliard equation coupled with a Cahn-Hilliard-Oono equation in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d = 2, 3$. This system accounts for macrophase and microphase separation in a polymer mixture through two order parameters $u$ and $v$. The free energy of this system is a bivariate interaction potential which contains the mixing entropy of the two order parameters and suitable coupling terms. The equations are endowed with initial conditions and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions both for $u,v$ and for the corresponding chemical potentials. We first prove that the resulting problem is well posed in a weak sense. Then, in the conserved case, we establish that the weak solution regularizes instantaneously. Furthermore, in two spatial dimensions, we show the strict separation property for $u$ and $v$, namely, they both stay uniformly away from the pure phases $\pm 1$ in finite time. Finally, we investigate the long-time behavior of a finite energy solution showing, in particular, that it converges to a single stationary state.

On the Mass-Conserving Allen-Cahn Approximation for Incompressible Binary Fluids

This paper is devoted to the global well-posedness of two Diffuse Interface systems modeling the motion of an incompressible two-phase fluid mixture in presence of capillarity effects in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d=2,3$. We focus on dissipative mixing effects originating from the mass-conserving Allen-Cahn dynamics with the physically relevant Flory-Huggins potential. More precisely, we study the mass-conserving Navier-Stokes-Allen-Cahn system for nonhomogeneous fluids and the mass-conserving Euler-Allen-Cahn system for homogeneous fluids. We prove existence and uniqueness of global weak and strong solutions as well as their property of separation from the pure states. In our analysis, we combine the energy and entropy estimates, a novel end-point estimate of the product of two functions, a new estimate for the Stokes problem with non-constant viscosity, and logarithmic type Gronwall arguments.

Nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw systems with singular potential and degenerate mobility

We study a Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw (or Cahn-Hilliard-Darcy) system for an incompressible mixture of two fluids. The relative concentration difference $φ$ is governed by a convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility and logarithmic potential. The volume averaged fluid velocity $\mathbf{u}$ obeys a Darcy's law depending on the so-called Korteweg force $μ\nabla φ$, where $μ$ is the nonlocal chemical potential. In addition, the kinematic viscosity $η$ may depend on $φ$. We establish first the existence of a global weak solution which satisfies the energy identity. Then we prove the existence of a strong solution. Further regularity results on the pressure and on $\mathbf{u}$ are also obtained. Weak-strong uniqueness is demonstrated in the two dimensional case. In the three-dimensional case, uniqueness of weak solutions holds if $η$ is constant. Otherwise, weak-strong uniqueness is shown by assuming that the pressure of the strong solution is $α$-Hölder continuous in space for $α\in (1/5,1)$.

On the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman and Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw systems

The phase separation of an isothermal incompressible binary fluid in a porous medium can be described by the so-called Brinkman equation coupled with a convective Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation. The former governs the average fluid velocity $\mathbf{u}$, while the latter rules evolution of $φ$, the difference of the (relative) concentrations of the two phases. The two equations are known as the Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman (CHB) system. In particular, the Brinkman equation is a Stokes-like equation with a forcing term (Korteweg force) which is proportional to $μ\nablaφ$, where $μ$ is the chemical potential. When the viscosity vanishes, then the system becomes the Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw (CHHS) system. Both systems have been studied from the theoretical and the numerical viewpoints. However, theoretical results on the CHHS system are still rather incomplete. For instance, uniqueness of weak solutions is unknown even in 2D. Here we replace the usual CH equation with its physically more relevant nonlocal version. This choice allows us to prove more about the corresponding nonlocal CHHS system. More precisely, we first study well-posedness for the CHB system, endowed with no-slip and no-flux boundary conditions. Then, existence of a weak solution to the CHHS system is obtained as a limit of solutions to the CHB system. Stronger assumptions on the initial datum allow us to prove uniqueness for the CHHS system. Further regularity properties are obtained by assuming additional, though reasonable, assumptions on the interaction kernel. By exploiting these properties, we provide an estimate for the difference between the solution to the CHB system and the one to the CHHS system with respect to viscosity.

Convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations with reaction terms

We introduce and analyze the nonlocal variants of two Cahn-Hilliard type equations with reaction terms. The first one is the so-called Cahn-Hilliard-Oono equation which models, for instance, pattern formation in diblock-copolymers as well as in binary alloys with induced reaction and type-I superconductors. The second one is the Cahn-Hilliard type equation introduced by Bertozzi et al. to describe image inpainting. Here we take a free energy functional which accounts for nonlocal interactions. Our choice is motivated by the work of Giacomin and Lebowitz who showed that the rigorous physical derivation of the Cahn-Hilliard equation leads to consider nonlocal functionals. The equations also have a transport term with a given velocity field and are subject to a homogenous Neumann boundary condition for the chemical potential, i.e., the first variation of the free energy functional. We first establish the well-posedness of the corresponding initial and boundary value problems in a weak setting. Then we consider such problems as dynamical systems and we show that they have bounded absorbing sets and global attractors.

Discontinuous Galerkin approximation of linear parabolic problems with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper we propose and analyze a Discontinuous Galerkin method for a linear parabolic problem with dynamic boundary conditions. We present the formulation and prove stability and optimal a priori error estimates for the fully discrete scheme. More precisely, using polynomials of degree $p\geq 1$ on meshes with granularity $h$ along with a backward Euler time-stepping scheme with time-step $Δt$, we prove that the fully-discrete solution is bounded by the data and it converges, in a suitable (mesh-dependent) energy norm, to the exact solution with optimal order $h^p + Δt$. The sharpness of the theoretical estimates are verified through several numerical experiments.

On nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes systems in two dimensions

We consider a diffuse interface model which describes the motion of an incompressible isothermal mixture of two immiscible fluids. This model consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation. Several results were already proven by two of the present authors. However, in the two-dimensional case, the uniqueness of weak solutions was still open. Here we establish such a result even in the case of degenerate mobility and singular potential. Moreover, we show the strong-weak uniqueness in the case of viscosity depending on the order parameter, provided that either the mobility is constant and the potential is regular or the mobility is degenerate and the potential is singular. In the case of constant viscosity, on account of the uniqueness results we can deduce the connectedness of the global attractor whose existence was obtained in a previous paper. The uniqueness technique can be adapted to show the validity of a smoothing property for the difference of two trajectories which is crucial to establish the existence of an exponential attractor. The latter is established even in the case of variable viscosity, constant mobility and regular potential.

A diffuse interface model for two-phase incompressible flows with nonlocal interactions and nonconstant mobility

We consider a diffuse interface model for incompressible isothermal mixtures of two immiscible fluids with matched constant densities. This model consists of the Navier-Stokes system coupled with a convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with non-constant mobility. We first prove the existence of a global weak solution in the case of non-degenerate mobilities and regular potentials of polynomial growth. Then we extend the result to degenerate mobilities and singular (e.g. logarithmic) potentials. In the latter case we also establish the existence of the global attractor in dimension two. Using a similar technique, we show that there is a global attractor for the convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with degenerate mobility and singular potential in dimension three.

On a diffuse interface model of tumor growth

We consider a diffuse interface model of tumor growth proposed by A.~Hawkins-Daruud et al. This model consists of the Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor cell fraction $φ$ nonlinearly coupled with a reaction-diffusion equation for $ψ$, which represents the nutrient-rich extracellular water volume fraction. The coupling is expressed through a suitable proliferation function $p(φ)$ multiplied by the differences of the chemical potentials for $φ$ and $ψ$. The system is equipped with no-flux boundary conditions which entails the conservation of the total mass, that is, the spatial average of $φ+ψ$. Here we prove the existence of a weak solution to the associated Cauchy problem, provided that the potential $F$ and $p$ satisfy sufficiently general conditions. Then we show that the weak solution is unique and continuously depends on the initial data, provided that $p$ satisfies slightly stronger growth restrictions. Also, we demonstrate the existence of a strong solution and that any weak solution regularizes in finite time. Finally, we prove the existence of the global attractor in a phase space characterized by an a priori bounded energy.

On the Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman system

We consider a diffuse interface model for phase separation of an isothermal incompressible binary fluid in a Brinkman porous medium. The coupled system consists of a convective Cahn-Hilliard equation for the phase field $ϕ$, i.e., the difference of the (relative) concentrations of the two phases, coupled with a modified Darcy equation proposed by H.C. Brinkman in 1947 for the fluid velocity $\mathbf{u}$. This equation incorporates a diffuse interface surface force proportional to $ϕ\nabla μ$, where $μ$ is the so-called chemical potential. We analyze the well-posedness of the resulting Cahn-Hilliard-Brinkman (CHB) system for $(ϕ,\mathbf{u})$. Then we establish the existence of a global attractor and the convergence of a given (weak) solution to a single equilibrium via Łojasiewicz-Simon inequality. Furthermore, we study the behavior of the solutions as the viscosity goes to zero, that is, when the CHB system approaches the Cahn-Hilliard-Hele-Shaw (CHHS) system. We first prove the existence of a weak solution to the CHHS system as limit of CHB solutions. Then, in dimension two, we estimate the difference of the solutions to CHB and CHHS systems in terms of the viscosity constant appearing in CHB.

Cahn-Hilliard Equation with Nonlocal Singular Free Energies

We consider a Cahn-Hilliard equation which is the conserved gradient flow of a nonlocal total free energy functional. This functional is characterized by a Helmholtz free energy density, which can be of logarithmic type. Moreover, the spatial interactions between the different phases are modeled by a singular kernel. As a consequence, the chemical potential $μ$ contains an integral operator acting on the concentration difference $c$, instead of the usual Laplace operator. We analyze the equation on a bounded domain subject to no-flux boundary condition for $μ$ and by assuming constant mobility. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution and some regularity properties. These results allow us to define a dissipative dynamical system on a suitable phase-space and we prove that such a system has a (connected) global attractor. Finally, we show that a Neumann-like boundary condition can be recovered for $c$, provided that it is supposed to be regular enough.

Long-time behavior for a hydrodynamic model on nematic liquid crystal flows with asymptotic stabilizing boundary condition and external force

In this paper, we consider a simplified Ericksen-Leslie model for the nematic liquid crystal flow. The evolution system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with a convective Ginzburg-Landau type equation for the averaged molecular orientation. We suppose that the Navier-Stokes equations are characterized by a no-slip boundary condition and a time-dependent external force g(t), while the equation for the molecular director is subject to a time-dependent Dirichlet boundary condition h(t). We show that, in 2D, each global weak solution converges to a single stationary state when h(t) and g(t) converge to a time-independent boundary datum h_\infty and 0, respectively. Estimates on the convergence rate are also obtained. In the 3D case, we prove that global weak solutions are eventually strong so that results similar to the 2D case can be proven. We also show the existence of global strong solutions, provided that either the viscosity is large enough or the initial datum is close to a given equilibrium.

Longtime behavior of nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equations

Here we consider the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with constant mobility in a bounded domain. We prove that the associated dynamical system has an exponential attractor, provided that the potential is regular. In order to do that a crucial step is showing the eventual boundedness of the order parameter uniformly with respect to the initial datum. This is obtained through an Alikakos-Moser type argument. We establish a similar result for the viscous nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with singular (e.g., logarithmic) potential. In this case the validity of the so-called separation property is crucial. We also discuss the convergence of a solution to a single stationary state. The separation property in the nonviscous case is known to hold when the mobility degenerates at the pure phases in a proper way and the potential is of logarithmic type. Thus, the existence of an exponential attractor can be proven in this case as well.

Non-isothermal viscous Cahn--Hilliard equation with inertial term and dynamic boundary conditions

We consider a non-isothermal modified Cahn--Hilliard equation which was previously analyzed by M. Grasselli et al. Such an equation is characterized by an inertial term and a viscous term and it is coupled with a hyperbolic heat equation. The resulting system was studied in the case of no-flux boundary conditions. Here we analyze the case in which the order parameter is subject to a dynamic boundary condition. This assumption requires a more refined strategy to extend the previous results to the present case. More precisely, we first prove the well-posedness for solutions with bounded energy as well as for weak solutions. Then we establish the existence of a global attractor. Finally, we prove the convergence of any given weak solution to a single equilibrium by using a suitable Lojasiewicz--Simon inequality.

Robust exponential attractors for the modified phase-field crystal equation

We consider the modified phase-field crystal (MPFC) equation that has recently been proposed by P. Stefanovic et al. This is a variant of the phase-field crystal (PFC) equation, introduced by K.-R. Elder et al., which is characterized by the presence of an inertial term $βϕ_{tt}$. Here $ϕ$ is the phase function standing for the number density of atoms and $β\geq 0$ is a relaxation time. The associated dynamical system for the MPFC equation with respect to the parameter $β$ is analyzed. More precisely, we establish the existence of a family of exponential attractors $\mathcal{M}_β$ that are Hölder continuous with respect to $β$.

Strong solutions for two-dimensional nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes systems

A well-known diffuse interface model for incompressible isothermal mixtures of two immiscible fluids consists of the Navier-Stokes system coupled with a convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. In some recent contributions the standard Cahn-Hilliard equation has been replaced by its nonlocal version. The corresponding system is physically more relevant and mathematically more challenging. Indeed, the only known results are essentially the existence of a global weak solution and the existence of a suitable notion of global attractor for the corresponding dynamical system defined without uniqueness. In fact, even in the two-dimensional case, uniqueness of weak solutions is still an open problem. Here we take a step forward in the case of regular potentials. First we prove the existence of a (unique) strong solution in two dimensions. Then we show that any weak solution regularizes in finite time uniformly with respect to bounded sets of initial data. This result allows us to deduce that the global attractor is the union of all the bounded complete trajectories which are strong solutions. We also demonstrate that each trajectory converges to a single equilibrium, provided that the potential is real analytic and the external forces vanish.

Well-posedness and longtime behavior for the modified phase-field crystal equation

We consider a modification of the so-called phase-field crystal (PFC) equation introduced by K.R. Elder et al. This variant has recently been proposed by P. Stefanovic et al. to distinguish between elastic relaxation and diffusion time scales. It consists of adding an inertial term (i.e. a second-order time derivative) into the PFC equation. The mathematical analysis of the resulting equation is more challenging with respect to the PFC equation, even at the well-posedness level. Moreover, its solutions do not regularize in finite time as in the case of PFC equation. Here we analyze the modified PFC (MPFC) equation endowed with periodic boundary conditions. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution with initial data in a bounded energy space. This solution satisfies some uniform dissipative estimates which allow us to study the global longtime behavior of the corresponding dynamical system. In particular, we establish the existence of an exponential attractor. Then we demonstrate that any trajectory originating from the bounded energy phase space does converge to a unique equilibrium. This is done by means of a suitable version of the Łojasiewicz-Simon inequality. A convergence rate estimate is also given.

Finite--dimensional global attractor for a system modeling the 2D nematic liquid crystal flow

We consider a 2D system that models the nematic liquid crystal flow through the Navier--Stokes equations suitably coupled with a transport-reaction-diffusion equation for the averaged molecular orientations. This system has been proposed as a reasonable approximation of the well-known Ericksen--Leslie system. Taking advantage of previous well-posedness results and proving suitable dissipative estimates, here we show that the system endowed with periodic boundary conditions is a dissipative dynamical system with a smooth global attractor of finite fractal dimension.

Nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes systems with singular potentials

Here we consider a Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system characterized by a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with a singular (e.g., logarithmic) potential. This system originates from a diffuse interface model for incompressible isothermal mixtures of two immiscible fluids. We have already analyzed the case of smooth potentials with arbitrary polynomial growth. Here, taking advantage of the previous results, we study this more challenging (and physically relevant) case. We first establish the existence of a global weak solution with no-slip and no-flux boundary conditions. Then we prove the existence of the global attractor for the 2D generalized semiflow (in the sense of J.M. Ball). We recall that uniqueness is still an open issue even in 2D. We also obtain, as byproduct, the existence of a connected global attractor for the (convective) nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation. Finally, in the 3D case, we establish the existence of a trajectory attractor (in the sense of V.V. Chepyzhov and M.I. Vishik).

Finite-dimensional global attractor for a nonlocal phase-field system

We analyze a phase-field system where the energy balance equation is linearly coupled with a nonlinear and nonlocal ODE for the order parameter $χ$. The latter equation is characterized by a space convolution term which models particle interaction and a singular configuration potential that forces $χ$ to take values in $(-1,1)$. We prove that the corresponding dynamical system has a bounded absorbing set in a suitable phase space. Then we establish the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor.

Global and trajectory attractors for a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system

The Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system is based on a well-known diffuse interface model and describes the evolution of an incompressible isothermal mixture of binary fluids. A nonlocal variant consists of the Navier-Stokes equations suitably coupled with a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation. The authors, jointly with P. Colli, have already proven the existence of a global weak solution to a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes system subject to no-slip and no-flux boundary conditions. Uniqueness is still an open issue even in dimension two. However, in this case, the energy identity holds. This property is exploited here to define, following J.M. Ball's approach, a generalized semiflow which has a global attractor. Through a similar argument, we can also show the existence of a (connected) global attractor for the convective nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation with a given velocity field, even in dimension three. Finally, we demonstrate that any weak solution fulfilling the energy inequality also satisfies an energy inequality. This allows us to establish the existence of the trajectory attractor also in dimension three with a time dependent external force.

Global Existence of Weak Solutions to a Nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes System

A well-known diffuse interface model consists of the Navier-Stokes equations nonlinearly coupled with a convective Cahn-Hilliard type equation. This system describes the evolution of an incompressible isothermal mixture of binary-fluids and it has been investigated by many authors. Here we consider a variant of this model where the standard Cahn-Hilliard equation is replaced by its nonlocal version. More precisely, the gradient term in the free energy functional is replaced by a spatial convolution operator acting on the order parameter phi, while the potential F may have any polynomial growth. Therefore the coupling with the Navier-Stokes equations is difficult to handle even in two spatial dimensions because of the lack of regularity of phi. We establish the global existence of a weak solution. In the two-dimensional case we also prove that such a solution satisfies the energy identity and a dissipative estimate, provided that F fulfills a suitable coercivity condition.

Nonlocal phase-field systems with general potentials

We consider a phase-field model where the internal energy depends on the order parameter in a nonlocal way. Therefore, the resulting system consists of the energy balance equation coupled with a nonlinear and nonlocal ODE for the order parameter. Such system has been analyzed by several authors, in particular when the configuration potential is a smooth double-well function. More recently, in the case of a potential defined on (-1,1) and singular at the endpoints, the existence of a finite-dimensional global attractor has been proven. Here we examine both the case of smooth potentials as well as the case of physically realistic (e.g., logarithmic) singular potentials. We prove well-posedness results and the eventual global boundedness of solutions uniformly with respect to the initial data. In addition, we show that the separation property holds in the case of singular potentials. Thanks to these results, we are able to demonstrate the existence of a finite-dimensional attractors in the present cases as well.

Trajectory and smooth attractors for Cahn-Hilliard equations with inertial term

The paper is devoted to a modification of the classical Cahn-Hilliard equation proposed by some physicists. This modification is obtained by adding the second time derivative of the order parameter multiplied by an inertial coefficient which is usually small in comparison to the other physical constants. The main feature of this equation is the fact that even a globally bounded nonlinearity is "supercritical" in the case of two and three space dimensions. Thus the standard methods used for studying semilinear hyperbolic equations are not very effective in the present case. Nevertheless, we have recently proven the global existence and dissipativity of strong solutions in the 2D case (with a cubic controlled growth nonlinearity) and for the 3D case with small inertial coefficient and arbitrary growth rate of the nonlinearity. The present contribution studies the long-time behavior of rather weak (energy) solutions of that equation and it is a natural complement of the results of our previous papers. Namely, we prove here that the attractors for energy and strong solutions coincide for both the cases mentioned above. Thus, the energy solutions are asymptotically smooth. In addition, we show that the non-smooth part of any energy solution decays exponentially in time and deduce that the (smooth) exponential attractor for the strong solutions constructed previously is simultaneously the exponential attractor for the energy solutions as well.
