Nuclear Forces for Precision Nuclear Physics -- a collection of perspectives

This is a collection of perspective pieces contributed by the participants of the Institute of Nuclear Theory's Program on Nuclear Physics for Precision Nuclear Physics which was held virtually from April 19 to May 7, 2021. The collection represents the reflections of a vibrant and engaged community of researchers on the status of theoretical research in low-energy nuclear physics, the challenges ahead, and new ideas and strategies to make progress in nuclear structure and reaction physics, effective field theory, lattice QCD, quantum information, and quantum computing. The contributed pieces solely reflect the perspectives of the respective authors and do not represent the viewpoints of the Institute for Nuclear theory or the organizers of the program.

Large-$N_c$ analysis of magnetic and axial two-nucleon currents in pionless effective field theory

We analyze magnetic and axial two-nucleon contact terms in a combined large-$N_c$ and pionless effective field theory expansion. These terms play important roles in correctly describing, e.g., the low-energy cross section of radiative neutron capture and the deuteron magnetic moment. We show that the large-$N_c$ expansion hints towards a hierarchy between the two leading-order magnetic terms that matches that found in phenomenological fits. We also comment on the issue of naturalness in different Lagrangian bases.

Long-range electroweak amplitudes of single hadrons from Euclidean finite-volume correlation functions

A relation is presented between single-hadron long-range matrix elements defined in a finite Euclidean spacetime, and the corresponding infinite-volume Minkowski amplitudes. This relation is valid in the kinematic region where any number of two-hadron states can simultaneously go on shell, so that the effects of strongly-coupled intermediate channels are included. These channels can consist of non-identical particles with arbitrary intrinsic spins. The result accommodates general Lorentz structures as well as non-zero momentum transfer for the two external currents inserted between the single-hadron states. The formalism, therefore, generalizes the work by Christ et al.~[Phys.Rev. D91 114510 (2015)], and extends the reach of lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to a wide class of new observables beyond meson mixing and rare decays. Applications include Compton scattering of the pion ($πγ^\star \to [ππ, K \overline K] \to πγ^\star$), kaon ($K γ^\star \to [πK, ηK] \to K γ^\star$) and nucleon ($N γ^\star \to N π\to N γ^\star$), as well as double-$β$ decays, and radiative corrections to the single-$β$ decay, of QCD-stable hadrons. The framework presented will further facilitate generalization of the result to studies of nuclear amplitudes involving two currents from lattice QCD.

Time-reversal-invariance-violating nucleon-nucleon potential in the 1/N_c expansion

We apply the large-$N_c$ expansion to the time-reversal-invariance-violating (TV) nucleon-nucleon potential. The operator structures contributing to next-to-next-to-leading order in the large-$N_c$ counting are constructed. For the TV and parity-violating case we find a single operator structure at leading order. The TV but parity-conserving potential contains two leading-order terms, which however are suppressed by 1/$N_c$ compared to the parity-violating potential. Comparison with phenomenological potentials, including the chiral EFT potential in the TV parity-violating case, leads to large-$N_c$ scaling relations for TV meson-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon couplings.

Energy dependence of the parity-violating asymmetry of circularly polarized photons in $d\vecγ \to np$ in pionless effective field theory

We calculate the energy dependence of the asymmetry in the cross sections for circularly polarized photons on an unpolarized deuteron target in $d\vecγ \to np$ in pionless effective field theory. By matching the parity-violating low-energy constants to different sets of corresponding model parameters we obtain estimates for the asymmetry. In addition we calculate two possible figures of merit for the asymmetry in order to assess the preferred photon energy at which to perform a possible future experiment at a high-intensity photon source.

The Theory of Parity Violation in Few-Nucleon Systems

We review recent progress in the theoretical description of hadronic parity violation in few-nucleon systems. After introducing the different methods that have been used to study parity-violating observables we discuss the available calculations for reactions with up to five nucleons. Particular emphasis is put on effective field theory calculations where they exist, but earlier and complementary approaches are also presented. We hope this review will serve as a guide for those who wish to know what calculations are available and what further calculations need to be completed before we can claim to have a comprehensive picture of parity violation in few nucleon systems.

Parity-violating neutron spin rotation in hydrogen and deuterium

We calculate the (parity-violating) spin rotation angle of a polarized neutron beam through hydrogen and deuterium targets, using pionless effective field theory up to next-to-leading order. Our result is part of a program to obtain the five leading independent low-energy parameters that characterize hadronic parity-violation from few-body observables in one systematic and consistent framework. The two spin-rotation angles provide independent constraints on these parameters. Using naive dimensional analysis to estimate the typical size of the couplings, we expect the signal for standard target densities to be 10^-7 to 10^-6 rad/m for both hydrogen and deuterium targets. We find no indication that the nd observable is enhanced compared to the np one. All results are properly renormalized. An estimate of the numerical and systematic uncertainties of our calculations indicates excellent convergence. An appendix contains the relevant partial-wave projectors of the three-nucleon system.

Hadronic Parity Violation in Effective Field Theory

An effective field theory program to analyze and interpret hadronic parity violation in two-, three-, and few-nucleon systems is described. Observables can be parameterized in terms of five low-energy constants, which have to be determined from experimental input. Results for parity-violating observables in the two- and three-nucleon sectors are presented, including a discussion of the relevance of parity-violating three-nucleon interactions.

On Parity-Violating Three-Nucleon Interactions and the Predictive Power of Few-Nucleon EFT at Very Low Energies

We address the typical strengths of hadronic parity-violating three-nucleon interactions in "pion-less" Effective Field Theory in the nucleon-deuteron (iso-doublet) system. By analysing the superficial degree of divergence of loop diagrams, we conclude that no such interactions are needed at leading order. The only two linearly independent parity-violating three-nucleon structures with one derivative mix two-S and two-P-half waves with iso-spin transitions Delta I = 0 or 1. Due to their structure, they cannot absorb any divergence ostensibly appearing at next-to-leading order. This observation is based on the approximate realisation of Wigner's combined SU(4) spin-isospin symmetry in the two-nucleon system, even when effective-range corrections are included. Parity-violating three-nucleon interactions thus only appear beyond next-to-leading order. This guarantees renormalisability of the theory to that order without introducing new, unknown coupling constants and allows the direct extraction of parity-violating two-nucleon interactions from three-nucleon experiments.

A Bayesian approach to chiral extrapolations

The determination of low-energy constants from data is an important component of most effective field theory programs, including that of chiral perturbation theory. We propose a novel method based on Bayesian probability theory which allows us to address several shortcomings of the standard approach to parameter extraction. Using a toy-model we argue that the Bayesian approach is ideally suited for the application in effective field theories. We also discuss the application to lattice QCD data.

Two parity violating asymmetries from $n p \to d γ$ in pionless effective field theories

We consider parity-violating observables from the processes $\vec n p\to d γ$ and $ np \to d \overset {\circlearrowleft}γ$. We perform calculations using pionless effective field theory both with and without explicit dibaryon fields. After combining these results with ones we have already obtained on parity-violating asymmetries in $\vec NN$ scattering, experimental input would in principle allow the extraction of all five parameters occurring at leading order in the parity-violating Lagrangian.

Electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in chiral perturbation theory including vector mesons

We calculate the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon up to fourth order in manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral perturbation theory with vector mesons as explicit degrees of freedom. A systematic power counting for the renormalized diagrams is implemented using both the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme and the reformulated version of infrared regularization. We analyze the electric and magnetic Sachs form factors, $G_E$ and $G_M$, and compare our results with the existing data. The inclusion of vector mesons results in a considerably improved description of the form factors. We observe that the most dominant contributions come from tree-level diagrams, while loop corrections with internal vector meson lines are small.
