Charge correlations in polaron hopping through molecules

In many organic molecules the strong coupling of excess charges to vibrational modes leads to the formation of polarons, i.e., a localized state of a charge carrier and a molecular deformation. Incoherent hopping of polarons along the molecule is the dominant mechanism of transport at room temperature. We study the far-from-equilibrium situation where, due to the applied bias, the induced number of charge carriers on the molecule is high enough such that charge correlations become relevant. We develop a diagrammatic theory that exactly accounts for all many-particle correlations functions for incoherent transport through a finite system. We compute the transport properties of short sequences of DNA by expanding the diagrammatic theory up to second order in the hopping parameters. The correlations qualitatively modify the I-V characteristics as compared to those approaches where correlations are dealt with in a mean-field type approximation only.

Coherent Transport through an interacting double quantum dot: Beyond sequential tunneling

Various causes for negative differential conductance in transport through an interacting double quantum dot are investigated. Particular focus is given to the interplay between the renormalization of the energy levels due to the coupling to the leads and the decoherence of the states. The calculations are performed within a basis of many-particle eigenstates and we consider the dynamics given by the von Neumann-equation taking into account also processes beyond sequential tunneling. A systematic comparison between the levels of approximation and also with different formalisms is performed. It is found that the current is qualitatively well described by sequential processes as long as the temperature is larger than the level broadening induced by the contacts.

Influence of vibrational modes on the electronic properties of DNA

We investigate the electron (hole) transport through short double-stranded DNA wires in which the electrons are strongly coupled to the specific vibrational modes (vibrons) of the DNA. We analyze the problem starting from a tight-binding model of DNA, with parameters derived from ab-initio calculations, and describe the dissipative transport by equation-of-motion techniques. For homogeneous DNA sequences like Poly- (Guanine-Cytosine) we find the transport to be quasi-ballistic with an effective density of states which is modified by the electron-vibron coupling. At low temperatures the linear conductance is strongly enhanced, but above the `semiconducting' gap it is affected much less. In contrast, for inhomogeneous (`natural') sequences almost all states are strongly localized, and transport is dominated by dissipative processes. In this case, a non-local electron-vibron coupling influences the conductance in a qualitative and sequence-dependent way.
