Study of the potential transverse momentum and potential angular momentum within the scalar diquark model

We make use of a simple scalar diquark model to study the potential transverse momentum and potential angular momentum, defined as the difference between the Jaffe-Manohar and Ji notions of transverse momentum and orbital angular momentum, respectively. A non-vanishing potential angular momentum has been previously found in lattice calculations and is believed to appear due to the effects of initial/final state interactions between the spectator system and the struck quark in high energy scattering processes. Such re-scattering phenomena are similar in nature to those who are responsible for generating the Sivers shift. This motivates us to search for an estimate of the potential angular momentum in terms of the expectation value of the transverse momentum of the struck quark.

Singularities in Twist-3 Quark Distributions

We find in one-loop calculations and spectator models that twist-3 GPDs exhibit discontinuities. In the forward limit these discontinuities grow into Dirac delta functions which are essential to satisfy the sum rules involving twist-3 PDFs. We calculate twist-3 quasi-PDFs as a function of longitudinal momentum and identify the Dirac delta function terms with momentum components in the nucleon state that do not scale as the nucleon is boosted to the infinite momentum frame.

Transverse Force on Transversely Polarized Quarks in Longitudinally Polarized Nucleons

We study the semi-classical interpretation of the $x^3$ and $x^4$ moments of twist-3 parton distribution functions (PDFs). While no semi-classical interpretation for the higher moments of $g_T(x)$ and $e(x)$ was find, the $x^3$ moment of the chirally odd spin-dependent twist-3 PDF $h_L^3(x)$ can be related to the longitudinal gradient of the transverse force on transversely polarized quarks in longitudinally polarized nucleons in a DIS experiment. We discuss how this result relates to the torque acting on a quark in the same experiment. This has further implications for comparisons between tha Jaffe-Manohar and the Ji decompositions of the nucleon spin.

Transverse Target Single Spin Asymmetry in Elastic e-{\p} Scattering

Using the Coulomb Eikonal Phase associated with a transversely polarized nucleon, we calculate the azimuthal single spin asymmetry of unpolarized electrons elastically scattered from a transversely polarized nucleon target. The azimuthal asymmetry in this case is attributed to the fact that in a transversely polarized nucleon, the transverse charge density is no longer axially symmetric and is distorted due to the transverse spin of the nucleon. This asymmetry in the nucleon charge density causes a left-right asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of the scattered electrons. In our approach, we utilize the relativistic Eikonal approximation to calculate the one and two photon exchange amplitudes from which a non zero azimuthal asymmetry appears due to the interference between the two amplitudes.

Distribution of Angular Momentum in the Transverse Plane

Fourier transforms of GPDs describe the distribution of partons in the transverse plane. The 2nd moment of GPDs has been identified by X.Ji with the angular momentum (orbital plus spin) carried by the quarks - a fundamental result that is being widely utilized in the spin decomposition of a longitudinally polarized nucleon. However, I will demonstrate that, despite the above results, the Fourier transform of the 2nd moment of GPDs does not describe the distribution of angular momentum in the transverse plane for a longitudinally polarized target.

Magnetic properties of the nucleon in a uniform background field

We present results for the magnetic moment and magnetic polarisability of the neutron and the magnetic moment of the proton. These results are calculated using the uniform background field method on 32^3 x 64 dynamical QCD lattices provided by the PACS-CS collaboration as part of the ILDG. We use a uniform background magnetic field quantised by the periodic spatial volume. We investigate ways to improve the effective energy plots used to calculate magnetic polarisabilities, including the use of correlation matrix techniques with various source smearings.

Parton Orbital Angular Momentum and Final State Interactions

Definitions of orbital angular momentum based on Wigner distributions are used as a framework to discuss the connection between the Ji definition of the quark orbital angular momentum and that of Jaffe and Manohar. We find that the difference between these two definitions can be interpreted as the change in the quark orbital angular momentum as it leaves the target in a DIS experiment. The mechanism responsible for that change is similar to the mechanism that causes transverse single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering.

The Nucleon Spin Sum Rule

Definitions of orbital angular momentum based on Wigner distributions are used as a framework to discuss the connection between the Ji definition of the quark orbital angular momentum and that of Jaffe and Manohar. We find that the difference between these two definitions can be interpreted as the change in the quark orbital angular momentum due to final state interactions as it leaves the target in a DIS experiment.

Transverse Force on Quarks in DIS

The interaction dependent part of the $x^2$-moment of the twist-3 polarized parton distribution $g_2(x)$ is related to the transverse force acting on the active quark in deep-inelastic scattering off a transversely polarized nucleon immediately after it has absorbed the virtual photon. Similarly, the $x^2$-moment of the chirally odd twist-3 unpolarized parton distribution $e(x)$ can be related to the transverse force experienced by a transversely polarized quark ejected from a transversely polarized nucleon.

Magnetic properties of the neutron in a uniform background field

We present calculations of the magnetic moment and magnetic polarisability of the neutron from the background field method. The calculations are performed on $32^3\times64$ dynamical lattices generated by the PACS-CS collaboration and made available via the ILDG. We consider uniform fields quantised by the periodic spatial volume. We explore different approaches for improving the quality of the fits used in the results. Also included are initial results for the magnetic moment of the lowest lying negative parity nucleon states.

Quark and Gluon Angular Momentum in the Nucleon

Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, are exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when the target and/or quark is transversely polarized. From this deformation, we present an intuitive derivation of the Ji relation. In a scalar diquark model and in QED, we compare the Ji and Jaffe-Manohar decompositions of the nucleon spin. Using the MIT bag model, we estimate spectator effects through the presence of the gluon vector potential in the definitions of the quark orbital angular momentum.

Quark Orbital Angular Momentum in the MIT Bag Model

Using the MIT bag model, we study the contribution from the gluon vector potential due to the spectators to the orbital angular momentum of a quark in the bag model. For $α_s = {\cal O}(1)$, this spectator contribution to the quark orbital angular momentum in the gauge-covariant Ji decomposition is of the same order as the non gauge-covariant quark orbital angular momentum and its magnitude is larger for $d$ than for $u$ quarks and negative for both.

Transverse Structure of Hadrons

Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when the target and/or quark are transversely polarized. Connections between this deformation and single-spin asymmetries as well as with quark-gluon correlations are discussed. The information content of the DVCS amplitude at fixed $Q^2$ can be condensed into GPDs along the `diagonal' $x=ξ$ plus D-form factor.

Generalized Parton Distributions, Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and TMDs

Parton distributions in impact parameter space, which are obtained by Fourier transforming GPDs, exhibit a significant deviation from axial symmetry when target and/or quark are transversely polarized. In combination with the final state interactions, this transverse deformation provides a natural mechanism for naive-T odd transverse single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive DIS. The deformation of PDFs in impact parameter space can also be related to the transverse force acting on the active quark in polarized DIS at higher twist.

Impact Parameter Space Interpretation for Generalized Parton Distributions

The Fourier transform of generalized parton distribution functions at xi=0 describes the distribution of partons in the transverse plane. The physical significance of these impact parameter dependent parton distribution functions is discussed. In particular, it is shown that they satisfy positivity constraints which justify their physical interpretation as a probability density. The generalized parton distribution H is related to the impact parameter distribution of unpolarized quarks for an unpolarized nucleon, H-tilde is related to the distribution of longitudinally polarized quarks in a longitudinally polarized nucleon, and $E$ is related to the distortion of the unpolarized quark distribution in the transverse plane when the nucleon has transverse polarization.

Scale Dependence of Hadronic Wave Functions and Parton Densities

We study how the components of hadronic wave functions in light-cone quantization depend on the ultraviolet cut-off by relating them in a systematic way to the matrix elements of a class of quark-gluon operators between the QCD vacuum and the hadrons. From this, we derive an infinite set of scale-evolution equations for the individual contributions to parton distributions from the Fock expansion. When summed over all the contributions, we recover the well-known DGLAP equation.

Dynamical vertex mass generation and chiral symmetry breaking on the light-front

Naively, helicity flip amplitudes for fermions seem to vanish in the chiral limit of light-front QCD, which would make it nearly impossible to generate a small pion mass in this framework. Using a simple model, it is illustrated how a large helicity flip amplitude is generated dynamically by summing over an infinite number of Fock space components. While the kinetic mass is basically generated by a zero-mode induced counter-term, the vertex mass is generated dynamically by infinitesimally small, but nonzero, momenta. Implications for the renormalization of light-front Hamiltonians for fermions are discussed.

Background-Field Formalism in Quantum Systems

The background-field formalism is used extensively in fundamental approaches to QCD to explore hadronic matrix elements of various currents. While the lattice QCD approach is formulated in the fully-interacting Hilbert space, which includes both QCD and background field interactions, the QCD sum-rule formalism is traditionally developed in the pure-QCD Hilbert space. The latter approach encounters difficulties with excited state contaminations which are not exponentially suppressed and requires extrapolations to isolate the desired physics. Proponents of the pure-QCD Hilbert space formalism used in the QCD sum-rule approach have criticized the lattice QCD approach as neglecting important physics. In this letter, the equivalence of the two approaches is established and the flaws in the former criticisms are resolved. Finally, the application of the fully-interacting Hilbert space formalism to the study of electromagnetic polarizabilities is outlined.

Parity Invariance and Effective Light-Front Hamiltonians

In the light-front form of field theory, boost invariance is a manifest symmetry. On the downside, parity and rotational invariance are not manifest, leaving the possibility that approximations or incorrect renormalization might lead to violations of these symmetries for physical observables. In this paper, it is discussed how one can turn this deficiency into an advantage and utilize parity violations (or the absence thereof) in practice for constraining effective light-front Hamiltonians. More precisely, we will identify observables that are both sensitive to parity violations and easily calculable numerically in a non-perturbative framework and we will use these observables to constrain the finite part of non-covariant counter-terms in effective light-front Hamiltonians.

Light Front Quantization

An introductory overview on Light-Front quantization, with some emphasis on recent achievements, is given. Light-Front quantization is the most promising and physical tool to study deep inelastic scattering on the basis of quark gluon degrees of freedom. The simplified vacuum structure (nontrivial vacuum effects can only appear in zero-mode degrees of freedom) and the physical basis allows for a description of hadrons that stays close to intuition. Recent progress has ben made in understanding the connection between effective LF Hamiltonians and nontrivial vacuum condesates. Discrete Light-Cone Quantization, the transverse lattice and Light-Front Tamm-Dancoff (in combination with renormalization group techniques) are the main tools for exploring LF-Hamiltonians nonperturbatively.

On the Possible Violation of Sum Rules for Higher-Twist Parton Distributions

Precise measurements of polarized electro-production and Drell-Yan in the deep inelastic limit will soon provide first information on the higher twist parton distributions $g_T(x)$ and $h_L(x)$. Sum rules for higher-twist structure functions are only valid provided the corresponding Compton amplitudes satisfy un-subtracted dispersion relations. Subtracted dispersion relations have to be used when the (real part of the) forward scattering amplitudes does not fall off rapidly enough for $ν\rightarrow \infty$ (fixed $Q^2$). Formally, such subtractions lead to $δ$-functions at the origin in the parton distributions, which are not accessible to experiment, and the integral over the data fails to satisfy the sum rule. The $δ$-functions in the parton distributions can be identified with the zero-modes that appear in light-front quantization. An explicit {\it infinite momentum boost} identifies these soft quark modes with low momentum contributions to the self-energy.

How to Measure the $Q\overline{Q}$ Potential in a Light-Front Calculation

A scheme is developed which shows how one would, given a light-front Hamiltonian for QCD, extract the $Q\overline{Q}$ potential, i.e. the quantity which corresponds to the potential between two infinitely heavy quarks in a rest frame, from a light-front calculation. The resulting potential will in general depend on the direction along which the infinitely heavy sources are separated and thus provides a direct probe of violations of rotational invariance in a physical observable. Furthermore, easy comparison to data from $c\overline{c}$ and $b\overline{b}$ spectroscopy and to lattice data is possible. The scheme may thus be very helpful in constructing a light-front Hamiltonian through an iterative procedure.
