Function Field Analogue of Shimura's Conjecture on Period Symbols

In this paper we introduce the notion of Shimura's period symbols over function fields in positive characteristic and establish their fundamental properties. We further formulate and prove a function field analogue of Shimura's conjecture on the algebraic independence of period symbols. Our results enable us to verify the algebraic independence of the coordinates of any nonzero period vector of an abelian t-module with complex multiplication whose CM type is non-degenerate and defined over an algebraic function field. This is an extension of Yu's work on Hilbert-Blumenthal t-modules.

The de Rham isomorphism for Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras

Introduced by Anglès, Pellarin, and Tavares Ribeiro, Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras are closely connected to Anderson log-algebraicity identities, Pellarin $L$-series, and Taelman class modules. In the present paper we define the de Rham map for Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras, and we prove that it is an isomorphism under natural hypotheses. As part of this investigation we determine further criteria for the uniformizability and rigid analytic triviality of Drinfeld modules over Tate algebras.

An effective criterion for Eulerian multizeta values in positive characteristic

Characteristic p multizeta values were initially studied by Thakur, who defined them as analogues of classical multiple zeta values of Euler. In the present paper we establish an effective criterion for Eulerian multizeta values, which characterizes when a multizeta value is a rational multiple of a power of the Carlitz period. The resulting "t-motivic" algorithm can tell whether any given multizeta value is Eulerian or not. We also prove that if zeta_A(s_1,...,s_r) is Eulerian, then zeta_A(s_2,...,s_r) has to be Eulerian. When r=2, this was conjectured (and later on conjectured for arbitrary r) by Lara Rodriguez and Thakur for the zeta-like case from numerical data. Our methods apply equally well to values of Carlitz multiple polylogarithms at algebraic points and zeta-like multizeta values.

A finite field hypergeometric function associated to eigenvalues of a Siegel eigenform

Although links between values of finite field hypergeometric functions and eigenvalues of elliptic modular forms are well known, we establish in this paper that there are also connections to eigenvalues of Siegel modular forms of higher degree. Specifically, we relate the eigenvalue of the Hecke operator of index $p$ of a Siegel eigenform of degree 2 and level 8 to a special value of a ${}_4F_3$-hypergeometric function.

Identities for Anderson generating functions for Drinfeld modules

Anderson generating functions are generating series for division values of points on Drinfeld modules, and they serve as important tools for capturing periods, quasi-periods, and logarithms. They have been fundamental in recent work on special values of positive characteristic L-series and in transcendence and algebraic independence problems. In the present paper we investigate techniques for expressing Anderson generating functions in terms of the defining polynomial of the Drinfeld module and determine new formulas for periods and quasi-periods.

The Mahler measure of a Calabi-Yau threefold and special L-values

The aim of this paper is to prove a Mahler measure formula of a four-variable Laurent polynomial whose zero locus defines a Calabi-Yau threefold. We show that its Mahler measure is a rational linear combination of a special L-value of the normalized newform in S_4(Gamma_0(8)) and a Riemann zeta value. This is equivalent to a new formula for a 6F5-hypergeometric series evaluated at 1.

Frobenius difference equations and algebraic independence of zeta values in positive equal characteristic

In analogy with the Riemann zeta function at positive integers, for each finite field F_p^r with fixed characteristic p we consider Carlitz zeta values zeta_r(n) at positive integers n. Our theorem asserts that among the zeta values in {zeta_r(1), zeta_r(2), zeta_r(3), ... | r = 1, 2, 3, ...}, all the algebraic relations are those algebraic relations within each individual family {zeta_r(1), zeta_r(2), zeta_r(3), ...}. These are the algebraic relations coming from the Euler-Carlitz relations and the Frobenius relations. To prove this, a motivic method for extracting algebraic independence results from systems of Frobenius difference equations is developed.

Geometric Gamma values and zeta values in positive characteristic

In analogy with values of the classical Euler Gamma-function at rational numbers and the Riemann zeta-function at positive integers, we consider Thakur's geometric Gamma-function evaluated at rational arguments and Carlitz zeta-values at positive integers. We prove that, when considered together, all of the algebraic relations among these special values arise from the standard functional equations of the Gamma-function and from the Euler-Carlitz relations and Frobenius p-th power relations of the zeta-function.

Algebraic relations among periods and logarithms of rank 2 Drinfeld modules

For any rank 2 Drinfeld module rho defined over an algebraic function field, we consider its period matrix P, which is analogous to the period matrix of an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Suppose that the characteristic of F_q is odd and rho is without complex multiplication. We show that the transcendence degree of the field generated by the entries of P over F_q(theta) is 4. As a consequence, we show also the algebraic independence of Drinfeld logarithms of algebraic functions which are linearly independent over F_q(theta).

A Weil-Barsotti formula for Drinfeld modules

We study the group of extensions in the category of Drinfeld modules and Anderson's t-modules, and we show in certain cases that this group can itself be given the structure of a t-module. Our main result is a Drinfeld module analogue of the Weil-Barsotti formula for abelian varieties. Extensions of general t-modules are also considered, in particular extensions of tensor powers of the Carlitz module. We motivate these results from various directions and compare to the situation of elliptic curves.
