Vibrational and nonlinear optical properties of amine-capped push-pull polyynes by infrared and Raman spectroscopy

The vibrational properties of a series of push-pull polyynes have been studied by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The simultaneous activation of a strong infrared and Raman mode, i.e. the collective vibration of CC bonds of the sp carbon chain, highlights the effectiveness of a polyyne bridge in promoting charge transfer between the electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) ends, thus suggesting that ad-hoc functionalized polyynes are worth being explored as building blocks of organic materials with attractive first-order optical nonlinearity. The optical, electronic, and vibrational properties of these molecules have been investigated with the support of density functional theory calculations, as well as the electronic and vibrational first hyperpolarizabilities ($β$). The mid-low region of the IR spectra (800-1600 cm$^{-1}$) has been analyzed in detail, searching for marker bands of the specific terminations of the different sp carbon chains thus achieving a complete vibrational characterization of sp hybridized push-pull systems.

Raman and IR spectra of graphdiyne nanoribbons

γ-graphdiyne is a 2D carbon structure beyond graphene: it is formed by sp and sp2 carbon atoms organized as hexagonal rings connected by linear links, and it is predicted to be a semiconductor. The lateral confinement of γ-graphdiyne nanoribbons significantly affects the electronic and vibrational properties. By means of periodic Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations we investigate here the electronic band structure, the Raman and IR spectra of the γ-graphdiyne 2D crystal and related nanoribbons. We discuss the effect of the functional and basis set on the evaluation of the band gap, highlighting the reliability of hybrid functionals. By joining DFT calculations with a symmetry analysis, we assign in detail the IR and Raman spectra of γ-graphdiyne. On this basis we show the modulation of the gap in nanoribbons of increasing width and different edges (armchair, zigzag). We assess how confinement affects the Raman and IR spectra of such nanoribbons by comparing their vibrational modes with the phonons of the parent 2D crystal. Our symmetry-based classification allows identifying the marker bands sensitive to the edge structure and lateral confinement of nanoribbons of increasing width. These results show the effectiveness of vibrational spectroscopy for the characterization of such nanostructures.

Size-selected polyynes synthesized by submerged arc discharge in water

Polyynes are linear sp-carbon chains of finite length consisting in a sequence of alternated single and triple bonds and displaying appealing optical and electronic properties. A simple, low cost and scalable production technique for polyynes is the submerged arc discharge (SAD) in liquid, which so far, has been mainly exploited in organic solvents. In this work, we investigated in detail SAD in water as a cheap and non-toxic solvent for the production of polyynes. The role of process parameters such as current (10-25 A) and voltage (20-25 V) in the production yield have been investigated, as well as polyynes stability. Polyynes terminated by hydrogen (CnH2: n=6-16) were identified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) coupled with UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy and with the support of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Size-selected polyynes separated by HPLC were analyzed by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The formation process was monitored by in situ SERS using an immersed fiber-optic Raman probe and employing Ag nanoparticles directly produced in the solution by SAD.

Some insights on bicategories of fractions: representations and compositions of 2-morphisms

In this paper we investigate the construction of bicategories of fractions originally described by D. Pronk: given any bicategory $\mathcal{C}$ together with a suitable class of morphisms $\mathbf{W}$, one can construct a bicategory $\mathcal{C}[\mathbf{W}^{-1}]$, where all the morphisms of $\mathbf{W}$ are turned into internal equivalences, and that is universal with respect to this property. Most of the descriptions leading to this construction were long and heavily based on the axiom of choice. In this paper we considerably simplify the description of the equivalence relation on $2$-morphisms and the constructions of associators, vertical and horizontal compositions in $\mathcal{C}[\mathbf{W}^{-1}]$, thus proving that the axiom of choice is not needed under certain conditions. The simplified description of associators and compositions will also play a crucial role in two forthcoming papers about pseudofunctors and equivalences between bicategories of fractions.

A bicategory of reduced orbifolds from the point of view of differential geometry - I

We describe a bicategory $(\mathcal{R}ed\,\mathcal{O}rb)$ of reduced orbifolds in the framework of classical differential geometry (i.e. without any explicit reference to notions of Lie groupoids or differentiable stacks, but only using orbifold atlases, local lifts and changes of charts). In order to construct such a bicategory, we first define a $2$-category $(\mathcal{R}ed\,\mathcal{A}tl)$ whose objects are reduced orbifold atlases (on any paracompact, second countable, Hausdorff topological space). The definition of morphisms is obtained as a slight modification of a definition by A. Pohl, while the definitions of $2$-morphisms and compositions of them is new in this setup. Using the bicalculus of fractions described by D. Pronk, we are able to construct the bicategory $(\mathcal{R}ed\,\mathcal{O}rb)$ from the $2$-category $(\mathcal{R}ed\,\mathcal{A}tl)$. We prove that $(\mathcal{R}ed\,\mathcal{O}rb)$ is equivalent to the bicategory of reduced orbifolds described in terms of proper, effective, étale Lie groupoids by D. Pronk and I. Moerdijk and to the $2$-category of reduced orbifolds described by several authors in the past in terms of a suitable class of differentiable Deligne-Mumford stacks.

Some insights on bicategories of fractions - II

We fix any bicategory $\mathscr{A}$ together with a class of morphisms $\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{A}}$, such that there is a bicategory of fractions $\mathscr{A}[\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{A}}^{-1}]$. Given another such pair $(\mathscr{B},\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{B}})$ and any pseudofunctor $\mathcal{F}:\mathscr{A}\rightarrow\mathscr{B}$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions in order to have an induced pseudofunctor $\mathcal{G}:\mathscr{A}[\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{A}}^{-1}]\rightarrow \mathscr{B}[\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{B}}^{-1}]$. Moreover, we give a simple description of $\mathcal{G}$ in the case when the class $\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{B}}$ is "right saturated".

Some insights on bicategories of fractions - III

We fix any bicategory $\mathscr{A}$ together with a class of morphisms $\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{A}}$, such that there is a bicategory of fractions $\mathscr{A}[\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{A}}^{-1}]$. Given another such pair $(\mathscr{B},\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{B}})$ and any pseudofunctor $\mathcal{F}:\mathscr{A}\rightarrow\mathscr{B}$, we find necessary and sufficient conditions in order to have an induced equivalence of bicategories from $\mathscr{A}[\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{A}}^{-1}]$ to $\mathscr{B}[\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{B}}^{-1}]$. In particular, this gives necessary and sufficient conditions in order to have an equivalence from any bicategory of fractions $\mathscr{A}[\mathbf{W}_{\mathscr{A}}^{-1}]$ to any given bicategory $\mathscr{B}$.

Universal families of extensions of coherent systems

We prove a result of cohomology and base change for families of coherent systems over a curve. We use that in order to prove the existence of (non-split, non-degenerate) universal families of extensions for families of coherent systems (in the spirit of the paper "Universal families of extensions" by H. Lange). Such results will be applied in subsequent papers in order to describe the wallcrossing for some moduli spaces of coherent systems.

Orbifolds and groupoids

We define a 2-category structure (Pre-Orb) on the category of reduced complex orbifold atlases. We construct a 2-functor F from (Pre-Orb) to the 2-category (Grp) of proper étale effective groupoid objects over the complex manifolds. Both on (Pre-Orb) and (Grp) there are natural equivalence relations on objects: (a natural extension of) equivalence of orbifold atlases in (Pre-Orb) and Morita equivalences in (Grp). We prove that F induces a bijection between the equivalence classes of its source and target.
