A 6G White Paper on Connectivity for Remote Areas

In many places all over the world rural and remote areas lack proper connectivity that has led to increasing digital divide. These areas might have low population density, low incomes, etc., making them less attractive places to invest and operate connectivity networks. 6G could be the first mobile radio generation truly aiming to close the digital divide. However, in order to do so, special requirements and challenges have to be considered since the beginning of the design process. The aim of this white paper is to discuss requirements and challenges and point out related, identified research topics that have to be solved in 6G. This white paper first provides a generic discussion, shows some facts and discusses targets set in international bodies related to rural and remote connectivity and digital divide. Then the paper digs into technical details, i.e., into a solutions space. Each technical section ends with a discussion and then highlights identified 6G challenges and research ideas as a list.

Global representation of Segre numbers by Monge-Ampère products

On a reduced analytic space $X$ we introduce the concept of a generalized cycle, which extends the notion of a formal sum of analytic subspaces to include also a form part. We then consider a suitable equivalence relation and corresponding quotient $\mathcal{B}(X)$ that we think of as an analogue of the Chow group and a refinement of de Rham cohomology. This group allows us to study both global and local intersection theoretic properties. We provide many $\mathcal{B}$-analogues of classical intersection theoretic constructions: For an analytic subspace $V\subset X$ we define a $\mathcal{B}$-Segre class, which is an element of $\mathcal{B}(X)$ with support in $V$. It satisfies a global King formula and, in particular, its multiplicities at each point coincide with the Segre numbers of $V$. When $V$ is cut out by a section of a vector bundle we interpret this class as a Monge-Ampère-type product. For regular embeddings we construct a $\mathcal{B}$-analogue of the Gysin morphism.

The $\bar\partial$-equation for $(p,q)$-forms on a non-reduced analytic space

On any pure $n$-dimensional, possibly non-reduced, analytic space $X$ we introduce the sheaves $\mathscr{E}_X^{p,q}$ of smooth $(p,q)$-forms and certain extensions $\mathscr{A}_X^{p,q}$ of them such that the corresponding Dolbeault complex is exact, i.e., the $\bar\partial$-equation is locally solvable in $\mathscr{A}_X$. The sheaves $\mathscr{A}_X^{p,q}$ are modules over the smooth forms, in particular, they are fine sheaves. We also introduce certain sheaves $\mathscr{B}_X^{n-p,n-q}$ of currents on $X$ that are dual to $\mathscr{A}_X^{p,q}$ in the sense of Serre duality. More precisely, we show that the compactly supported Dolbeault cohomology of $\mathscr{B}^{n-p,n-q}(X)$ in a natural way is the dual of the Dolbeault cohomology of $\mathscr{A}^{p,q}(X)$.

The $\bar{\partial}$-equation on a non-reduced analytic space

Let $X$ be a, possibly non-reduced, analytic space of pure dimension. We introduce a notion of $\overline{\partial}$-equation on $X$ and prove a Dolbeault-Grothendieck lemma. We obtain fine sheaves $\mathcal{A}_X^q$ of $(0,q)$-currents, so that the associated Dolbeault complex yields a resolution of the structure sheaf $\mathscr{O}_X$. Our construction is based on intrinsic semi-global Koppelman formulas on $X$.

Green functions, Segre numbers, and King's formula

Let $\mathcal J$ be a coherent ideal sheaf on a complex manifold $X$ with zero set $Z$, and let $G$ be a plurisubharmonic function such that $G=\log|f|+\mathcal O(1)$ locally at $Z$, where $f$ is a tuple of holomorphic functions that defines $\mathcal J$. We give a meaning to the Monge-Ampère products $(dd^c G)^k$ for $k=0,1,2,...$, and prove that the Lelong numbers of the currents $M_k^{\mathcal J}:=\mathbf 1_Z(dd^c G)^k$ at $x$ coincide with the so-called Segre numbers of $\mathcal J$ at $x$, introduced independently by Tworzewski, Gaffney-Gassler, and Achilles-Manaresi. More generally, we show that $M_k^{\mathcal J}$ satisfy a certain generalization of the classical King formula.

Segre numbers, a generalized King formula, and local intersections

Let $\mathcal J$ be an ideal sheaf on a reduced analytic space $X$ with zero set $Z$. We show that the Lelong numbers of the restrictions to $Z$ of certain generalized Monge-Ampère products $(dd^c\log|f|^2)^k$, where $f$ is a tuple of generators of $\mathcal J$, coincide with the so-called Segre numbers of $\mathcal J$, introduced independently by Tworzewski and Gaffney-Gassler. More generally we show that these currents satisfy a generalization of the classical King formula that takes into account fixed and moving components of Vogel cycles associated with $\mathcal J$. A basic tool is a new calculus for products of positive currents of Bochner-Martinelli type. We also discuss connections to intersection theory.

Coleff-Herrera currents, duality, and Noetherian operators

Let $\I$ be a coherent subsheaf of a locally free sheaf $\Ok(E_0)$ and suppose that $\F=\Ok(E_0)/\I$ has pure codimension. Starting with a residue current $R$ obtained from a locally free resolution of $\F$ we construct a vector-valued Coleff-Herrera current $μ$ with support on the variety associated to $\F$ such that $ϕ$ is in $\I$ if and only if $μϕ=0$. Such a current $μ$ can also be derived algebraically from a fundamental theorem of Roos about the bidualizing functor, and the relation between these two approaches is discussed. By a construction due to Björk one gets Noetherian operators for $\I$ from the current $μ$. The current $R$ also provides an explicit realization of the Dickenstein-Sessa decomposition and other related canonical isomorphisms.

A generalized Poincaré-Lelong formula

We prove a generalization of the classical Poincaré-Lelong formula. Given a holomorphic section $f$, with zero set $Z$, of a Hermitian vector bundle $E\to X$, let $S$ be the line bundle over $X\setminus Z$ spanned by $f$ and let $Q=E/S$. Then the Chern form $c(D_Q)$ is locally integrable and closed in $X$ and there is a current $W$ such that $dd^cW=c(D_E)-c(D_Q)-M,$ where $M$ is a current with support on $Z$. In particular, the top Bott-Chern class is represented by a current with support on $Z$. We discuss positivity of these currents, and we also reveal a close relation with principal value and residue currents of Cauchy-Fantappiè-Leray type.

Koppelman formulas and the $\dbar$-equation on an analytic space

Let $X$ be an analytic space of pure dimension. We introduce a formalism to generate intrinsic weighted Koppelman formulas on $X$ that provide solutions to the $\dbar$-equation. We prove that if $ϕ$ is a smooth $(0,q+1)$-form on a Stein space $X$ with $\dbarϕ=0$, then there is a smooth $(0,q)$-form $ψ$ on $X_{reg}$ with at most polynomial growth at $X_{sing}$ such that $\dbarψ=ϕ$. The integral formulas also give other new existence results for the $\dbar$-equation and Hartogs theorems, as well as new proofs of various known results.

Operators with smooth functional calculi

We introduce a class of (tuples of commuting) unbounded operators on a Banach space, admitting smooth functional calculi, that contains all operators of Helffer-Sjöstrand type and is closed under the action of smooth proper mappings. Moreover, the class is closed under tensor product of commuting operators. In general an operator in this class has no resolvent in the usual sense so the spectrum must be defined in terms of the functional calculus. We also consider invariant subspaces and spectral decompositions.

The membership problem for polynomial ideals in terms of residue currents

We find a relation between the vanishing of a globally defined residue current on $¶^n$ and solution of the membership problem with control of the polynomial degrees. Several classical results appear as special cases, such as Max Nöther's theorem, and we also obtain a generalization of that theorem. There are also connections to effective versions of the Nullstellensatz. We also provide explicit integral representations of the solutions.
