A K_T-deformation of the ring of symmetric functions

The ring of symmetric functions can be implemented in the homology of \union_{a,b} Gr(a,a+b), the multiplicative structure being defined from the "direct sum" map. There is a natural circle action (simultaneously on all Grassmannians) under which each direct sum map is equivariant. Upon replacing usual homology by equivariant K-homology, we obtain a 2-parameter deformation of the ring of symmetric functions. This ring has a module basis given by Schubert classes. Geometric considerations show that multiplication of Schubert classes has positive coefficients, in an appropriate sense. In this paper we give manifestly positive formulae for these coefficients: they count numbers of "DS pipe dreams'' with prescribed edge labelings.

Combinatorial duality of Hilbert schemes of points in the affine plane

The Hilbert scheme of $n$ points in the affine plane contains the open subscheme parametrizing $n$ distinct points in the affine plane, and the closed subscheme parametrizing ideals of codimension $n$ supported at the origin of the affine plane. Both schemes admit Białynicki-Birula decompositions into moduli spaces of ideals with prescribed lexicographic Gröbner deformations. We show that both decompositions are stratifications in the sense that the closure of each stratum is a union of certain other strata. We show that the corresponding two partial orderings on the set of of monomial ideals are dual to each other.

On the cup product for Hilbert schemes of points in the plane

We revisit Ellingsrud and Strø mme's cellular decomposition of the Hilbert scheme of points in the projective plane. We study the product of cohomology classes defined by the closures of cells, deriving necessary conditions for the non-vanishing of cohomology classes. Though our conditions are formulated in purely combinatorial terms, the machinery for deriving them includes techniques from Biał ynicki-Birula theory: We study closures of Biał ynicki-Birula cells in complete complex varieties equipped with ample line bundles. We prove a necessary condition for two such closures to meet, and apply this criterion in our setting.

Components of Gröbner strata in the Hilbert scheme of points

We fix the lexicographic order $\prec$ on the polynomial ring $S=k[x_{1},...,x_{n}]$ over a ring $k$. We define $\Hi^{\precΔ}_{S/k}$, the moduli space of reduced Gröbner bases with a given finite standard set $Δ$, and its open subscheme $\Hi^{\precΔ,\et}_{S/k}$, the moduli space of families of $#Δ$ points whose attached ideal has the standard set $Δ$. We determine the number of irreducible and connected components of the latter scheme; we show that it is equidimensional over ${\rm Spec}\,k$; and we determine its relative dimension over ${\rm Spec} k$. We show that analogous statements do not hold for the scheme $\Hi^{\precΔ}_{S/k}$. Our results prove a version of a conjecture by Bernd Sturmfels.

Gröbner strata in the Hilbert scheme of points

The present paper shall provide a framework for working with Gröbner bases over arbitrary rings $k$ with a prescribed finite standard set $Δ$. We show that the functor associating to a $k$-algebra $B$ the set of all reduced Gröbner bases with standard set $Δ$ is representable and that the representing scheme is a locally closed stratum in the Hilbert scheme of points. We cover the Hilbert scheme of points by open affine subschemes which represent the functor associating to a $k$-algebra $B$ the set of all border bases with standard set $Δ$ and give reasonably small sets of equations defining these schemes. We show that the schemes parametrizing Gröbner bases are connected; give a connectedness criterion for the schemes parametrizing border bases; and prove that the decomposition of the Hilbert scheme of points into the locally closed strata parametrizing Gröbner bases is not a stratification.
