Origin of hadron mass from gravitational D-form factor and neutron star measurements

Clarifying the origin of hadron mass is one of the fundamental problems in particle physics, relevant from hadronic scales to astrophysical observations. At low energies, this issue is reflected in the decomposition of the hadron mass into chiral-variant and -invariant components. In this letter, we propose a method to extract the chiral invariant mass from the gravitational $D$-form factor under the assumption of the lightest-sigma meson dominance. Focusing on the nucleon, we show that a sizable chiral invariant mass is required to reproduce lattice QCD data, consistent with neutron star constraints.

Chiral condensates for neutron stars in hadron-quark crossover; from a parity doublet nucleon model to an NJL quark model

In this contribution, we summarize our recent studies on the chiral invariant mass and the chiral condensates in neutron star matter. We construct a unified equations of state assuming the crossover phase transition from hadronic matter described by a parity doublet model to quark matter by an Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type quark model. We first show that the chiral invariant mass is constrained to be 600 MeV $\lesssim m_0 \lesssim$ 900 MeV from recent observations of neutron stars. We then determine the density dependence of the chiral condensate in the crossover description, and show that the chiral condensates are actually smoothly connected from the hadronic matter where the change is driven by the positive chiral scalar charge in a nucleon, to the quark matter where the change is by the modification of the quark Dirac sea, reflecting the hadron-quark crossover.

Impacts of anomaly on nuclear and neutron star equation of state based on a parity doublet model

We examine the role of the $U(1)_A$ anomaly in a parity doublet model of nucleons which include the chiral variant and invariant masses. Our model expresses the $U(1)_A$ anomaly by the Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t\,Hooft (KMT) interaction in the mesonic sector. After examining the roles of the KMT term in vacuum, we discuss its impacts on nuclear equations of state (EOS). The $U(1)_A$ anomaly increases the masses of the $η'$ and $σ$ mesons and enhances the chiral symmetry breaking. The $U(1)_A$ anomaly enlarges the energy difference between chiral symmetric and symmetry broken vacuum; in turn, the chiral restoration at high density adds a larger energy density (often referred as a bag constant) to EOSs than in the case without the anomaly, leading to softer EOSs. Including these $U(1)_A$ effects, we update the previously constructed unified equations of state that interpolate the nucleonic EOS at $n_B \le 2n_0$ ($n_{0} = 0.16\, \rm{fm^{-3}}$: nuclear saturation density) and quark EOS at $n_B \ge 5n_0$. The unified EOS is confronted with the observational constraints on the masses and radii of neutron stars. The softening of EOSs associated with the $U(1)$ anomaly reduces the overall radii, relaxing the previous constraint on the chiral invariant mass $m_0$. Including the attractive nonlinear $ρ$-$ω$ coupling to improved estimates for the slope parameter in the symmetry energy, our new estimate is $400\,{\rm MeV} \leq m_0 \leq 700\,{\rm MeV}$, with $m_0$ smaller than our previous estimate by $\sim 200$ MeV.

Chiral effective theory of diquarks and the U_A(1) anomaly

The diquark is a strongly correlated quark pair that plays an important role in hadrons and hadronic matter. In order to treat the diquak as a building block of hadrons, we formulate an effective theory of diquark fields with $SU(3)_R \times SU(3)_L$ chiral symmetry. We concentrate on the scalar ($0^+$) and pseudoscalar ($0^-$) diquarks and construct a linear-sigma-model Lagrangian. It is found that the effective Lagrangian contains a new type of chirally symmetric meson-diquark-diquark coupling that breaks axial $U_A(1)$ symmetry. We discuss consequences of the $U_A(1)$ anomaly term to the diquark masses as well as to the singly heavy baryon spectrum, which is directly related to the diquark spectrum. We find an inverse mass ordering between strange and nonstrange diquarks. The parameters of the effective theory can be determined by the help of lattice QCD calculations of diquarks and also from the mass spectrum of the singly heavy baryons. We determine the strength of the $U_A(1)$ anomaly term, which is found to give a significant portion of the diquark masses.

Inverse Mass Hierarchy of Light Scalar Mesons Driven by Anomaly-Induced Flavor Breaking

We propose a novel mechanism to reproduce the observed mass hierarchy for the scalar mesons lighter than 1 GeV (called the inverse hierarchy) regarding them as mesons made of a quark and an anti-quark ($q\bar{q}$ mesons). The source is provided by the SU(3)-flavor symmetry-breaking induced by U(1) axial anomaly. In particular, the anomaly term including the explicit-chiral symmetry-breaking plays a significant role for the light scalar meson spectrum. To be concrete, we construct a linear sigma model for the scalar mesons of $q\bar{q}$ type together with their pseudoscalar chiral partners, including an anomaly-induced explicit-chiral symmetry-breaking term. We find that, due to the proposed mechanism, the inverse hierarchy, i.e., $m\left[ a_0 (980) \right] \simeq m\left[ f_0 (980) \right] > m \left[ K_0^\ast (700) \right] > m \left[ f_0(500) \right]$ is indeed realized. Consequently, the quark content of $f_0 (500)$ is dominated by the isoscalar $\bar uu+ \bar dd$ component, and $f_0 (980)$ is by the strange quark bilinear's, $s\bar{s}$.

Appearance of novel modes of $\bar{D}$ mesons in the Dual Chiral Density Wave

We calculate dispersion relations for $\bar{D}(0^-)$, $\bar{D}^*(1^-)$, $\bar{D}_0^*(0^+)$ and $\bar{D}_1(1^+)$ mesons in the Dual Chiral Density Wave (DCDW) where the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken by inhomogeneous chiral condensate. Employing the Bloch's theorem, we show that all the modes have opposite group velocity to the momentum in the low-momentum region and the energy is minimized at non-zero momentum. Furthermore, the magnitude of momentum which realizes the minimum energy is equal to the wave number of the density wave.

Coupled channel analysis of molecule picture of $P_{c}(4380)$

We construct a potential obtained by one-pion exchange for the coupled channel $Σ_c^\ast$$\bar{D}$-$Σ_c$$\bar{D}^\ast$, and solve the coupled Schrödinger equations to determine the binding energy. We find that there exists one or two bound states with the binding energy of several MeV below the threshold of $Σ_c^\ast$ and $\bar{D}$, dominantly made from a $Σ_c^\ast$ baryon and a $\bar{D}$ meson, with the size of about $1.5$fm for wide parameter region. We also study the pentaquark states including a $b$ quark and/or an anti-$b$ quark. We show that there exist pentaquarks including $c\bar{b}$, $b\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$, all of which lie at about $10$MeV below the corresponding threshold and have size of about $1.5$fm.

Degeneracy of doubly heavy baryons from heavy quark symmetry

The spectroscopy of the doubly heavy baryons including different heavy quarks is studied based on the heavy quark symmetry of QCD. We point out that, when the two heavy quarks are in $S$-wave, these baryons with a certain spin $j_l$ of the light cloud can be classified into two sets: a heavy quark singlet with total spin of $j=j_l$ and a heavy quark multiplet with $j= (j_l+1) , j_l ,\ldots \vert j_l-1\vert$, all the baryons in these two sets have the same mass and, the baryons with the same quantum numbers in these two sets do not mix with each other. We finally point out that the strong decay of the first excited baryon with light spin $j_l = 1/2$ to the ground state and one-pion is determined by the mass splitting through the generalized Goldberger--Treiman relation.

Fractionized Skyrmions in Dense Compact-Star Matter

The hadronic matter described as a skyrmion matter embedded in an FCC crystal is found to turn into a half-skyrmion matter with vanishing (in the chiral limit) quark condensate and {\it non-vanishing} pion decay constant {$f_π$} at a density $n_{1/2}$ lower than or near the critical density $n_c$ at which hadronic matter changes over to a chiral symmetry restored phase with possibly deconfined quarks. When hidden local gauge fields and a dilaton scalar of spontaneously broken scale symmetry with decay constant $f_χ$ are incorporated, this half-skyrmion phase is characterized by $f_χ\approx f_π\neq 0$ with the hidden gauge coupling $g\neq 0$ but $\ll 1$. While chiral symmetry is restored {\it globally} in this region in the sense that space-averaged, $\la\bar{q}q\ra$ vanishes, quarks are still confined in massive hadrons and massless pions. This phase is shown to play a crucial role in the model for a smooth transition from a soft EoS at low density to a stiffer EoS at high density, the changeover taking place at $n_{1/2} \sim 2n_0$. It resembles the "quarkyonic phase" predicted in large $N_c$ QCD and represents the "hadronic freedom" regime which figures as a doorway to chiral restoration. The fractionization of skyrmion matter into half-skyrmion matter has a tantalizing analogy to what appears to happen in condensed matter in (2+1) dimensions where half-skyrmions or "merons" enter as relevant degrees of freedom at the interface.

Lecture notes on the Skyrme model

This lecture provides a pedagogical instruction to the basic concepts of the Skyrme model and its some applications. As the preliminary for understanding the Skyrme model, we first briefly explain the large $N_c$ expansion, chiral symmetry and its breaking. Next we give a brief review of nonlinear sigma model including the power counting scheme of the chiral perturbation theory, starting from the linear sigma model. We then give an exhaust explanation of the Skyrme model and its applications. After the presentation of the Skyrme model for baryons in free space, we introduce how to study the baryonic matter and medium modified hadron properties by using the Skyrme model. Finally we discuss a way to incorporate the lowest-lying vector mesons into the Skyrme model based on the hidden local symmetry. Some possible further developments are also covered.

Relations among pionic decays of spin-1 mesons from an SU(4)$\times$U(1) emergent symmetry in QCD

Motivated by recent results by lattice analysis, we assume that the spin-1 mesons of $\left( ρ, ω, a_1, ρ', ω', b_1, f_1, h_1\right)$ make a representation of $\mathbf{16}$ of U(4) emergent symmetry in two-flavor QCD when the chiral symmetry is not broken. We study the decay properties of the spin-1 mesons by using a chiral model with an SU(4)$\times$U(1) hidden local symmetry. We first show that, since the SU(4) symmetry is spontaneously broken together with the chiral symmetry, each coupling of the interaction among one pion and two spin-1 mesons is proportional to the mass difference of the relevant spin-1 mesons similarly to the Goldberger-Treiman relation. In addition, some of one-pion couplings are related with each other by the SU(4) symmetry. We further show that there is a relation among the mass of $ρ'$ meson, the $ρ'ππ$ coupling and the $ρ'$-photon mixing strength as well as the Kawarabayashi-Suzuki-Riazuddin-Fayyazuddin relation for the $ρ$ meson. From the relations, we give numerical predictions such as ratios of the spin-1 meson decay widths, which are compared with future experiments for testing the existence of the U(4) emergent symmetry.

The mass of heavy-light mesons in a constituent quark picture with partially restored chiral symmetry

We probe effects of the partial chiral symmetry restoration to the mass of heavy-light mesons in a constituent quark model by changing the constituent quark mass of the light quark. Due to the competing effect between the quark mass and the linearly rising potential, whose contribution to the energy increases as the quark mass decreases, the heavy-light meson mass has a minimum value near the constituent quark mass typically used in the vacuum. Hence, the meson mass increases as one decreases the constituent quark mass consistent with recent QCD sum rule analyses, which show an increasing $D$ meson mass as the chiral order parameter decreases.

Asymmetric nuclear matter in a parity doublet model with hidden local symmetry

We construct a model to describe dense hadronic matter at zero and finite temperature, based on the parity doublet model of DeTar and Kunihiro, with including the iso-singlet scalar meson $σ$ as well as $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons. We show that, by including a six-point interaction of $σ$ meson, the model reasonably reproduces the properties of the normal nuclear matter with the chiral invariant nucleon mass $m_0$ in the range from $500~{\rm MeV}$ to $900~{\rm MeV}$. Furthermore, we study the phase diagram based on the model, which shows that the value of the chiral condensate drops at the liquid-gas phase transition point and at the chiral phase transition point. We also study asymmetric nuclear matter and find that the first order phase transition for the liquid-gas phase transition disappears in asymmetric matter and that the critical density for the chiral phase transition at non-zero density becomes smaller for larger asymmetry.

Doubly heavy baryons with chiral partner structure

The spectrum and dominant strong decay properties of the doubly heavy baryons are revisited by using a chiral effective model with chiral partner structure. By regarding the doubly heavy baryons in the ground states and light angular momentum $j_l = 1/2$ sector of the first orbitally excited states as chiral partners to each other, we estimate the mass splitting of the chiral partners which arises from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry to be about $430$ MeV for baryons including an unflavored light quark and about $350$ MeV for that including a strange quark. We point out that, similar to the heavy-light meson sector, the intermultiplet decay from a baryon with negative parity to its chiral partner and a pion is determined by the mass splitting throught the generalized Goldberger-Treiman relation. Furthermore, the isospin violating decay of $Ω_{cc}$ baryon, $((1/2)^-, (3/2)^-)_s \to ((1/2)^+, (3/2)^+)_s + π^0$ through the $η$-$π^0$ mixing is the dominant decay channel of the doubly heavy baryons including a strange quark.

Effects of scalar mesons in a Skyrme model with hidden local symmetry

We study the effects of light scalar mesons on the skyrmion properties by constructing and examining a mesonic model including pion, rho meson, and omega meson fields as well as two-quark and four-quark scalar meson fields. In our model, the physical scalar mesons are defined as mixing states of the two- and four-quark fields. We first omit the four-quark scalar meson field from the model and find that when there is no direct coupling between the two-quark scalar meson and the vector mesons, the soliton mass is smaller and the soliton size is larger for lighter scalar mesons; when direct coupling is switched on, as the coupling strength increases, the soliton becomes heavy, and the radius of the baryon number density becomes large, as the repulsive force arising from the $ω$ meson becomes strong. We then include the four-quark scalar meson field in the model and find that mixing between the two-quark and four-quark components of the scalar meson fields also affects the properties of the soliton. When the two-quark component of the lighter scalar meson is increased, the soliton mass decreases and the soliton size increases.

Extended Goldberger-Treiman relation obtained in a three-flavor parity doublet model

We study masses and decay widths of positive and negative parity nucleons using a three-flavor parity doublet model, in which we introduce three representations, $\left[({\bf 3} , \bar{\bf 3})\oplus (\bar{\bf 3} , {\bf 3})\right]$, $\left[({\bf 3} , {\bf 6}) \oplus ({\bf 6}, {\bf 3})\right]$, and $\left[({\bf 8} , {\bf 1}) \oplus ({\bf 1} , {\bf 8})\right]$ of the chiral U$(3)_{\rm L}\times$U$(3)_{\rm R}$ symmetry. We find an extended version of the Goldberger-Treiman relation among the mass differences and the coupling constants for pionic transitions. This relation leads to an upper bound for the decay width of $N(1440) \rightarrow N(939) + π$ independently of the model parameters. We perform the numerical fitting of the model parameters and derive several predictions, which can be tested in future experiments or lattice QCD analysis. Furthermore, when we use the axial coupling of the excited nucleons obtained from lattice QCD analyses as inputs, we find that the ground state nucleon $N(939)$ consists of about 80% of $\left[({\bf 3} , {\bf 6}) \oplus ({\bf 6}, {\bf 3})\right]$ component, and that the chiral invariant mass of $N(939)$ is roughly $500$ -- $800$MeV.

Inhomogeneous quark condensate in compressed skyrmion matter

The inhomogeneous quark condensate, responsible for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in cold nuclear matter, is studied by putting skyrmions onto the face-centered cubic crystal and treating the skyrmion matter as nuclear matter. By varying the crystal size, we explore the effect of density on the local structure of the quark-antiquark condensate. By endowing the light vector mesons $ρ$ and $ω$ with hidden local symmetry and incorporating a scalar meson as a dilaton of spontaneously broken scale symmetry, we uncover the intricate interplay of heavy mesons in the local structure of the quark condensate in dense baryonic matter described in terms of skyrmion crystal. It is found that the inhomogeneous quark density persists to as high a density as $\sim 4$ times nuclear matter density. The difference between the result from the present approach and that from the chiral density wave ansatz is also discussed.

$D$ and $D^{\ast}$ meson mixing in spin-isospin correlated cold nuclear matter

We propose to study the mass spectrum of the heavy-light mesons to probe the structure of the spin-isospin correlation in the nuclear medium. We point out that the spin-isospin correlation in the nuclear medium generates a mixing among the heavy-light mesons carrying different spins and isospins such as $D^+$, $D^0$, $D^{\ast +}$, and $D^{\ast 0}$ mesons. We use two types of correlations motivated by the skyrmion crystal and the chiral density wave as typical examples to obtain the mass splitting caused by the mixing. Our result shows that the structure of the mixing reflects the pattern of the correlation, i.e., the remaining symmetry. Furthermore, the magnitude of the mass modification provides information of the strength of the correlation.

Chiral effective theories from holographic QCD with scalars

We develop a method for integrating out the heavy Kaluza-Klein modes of scalar type as well as those of vector and axial-vector types, in a class of hard-wall bottom-up approaches of holographic QCD models, including the Dirac-Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons parts. By keeping only the lowest-lying vector mesons, we first obtain an effective chiral Lagrangian of the vector mesons based on the hidden local symmetry, and all the low-energy constants in the HLS Lagrangian are expressed in terms of holographic integrals and, consequently, are fully determined by the holographic geometry and a few constants of mesons. We find that the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation is manifestly reproduced at the lowest order of derivative expansion. We also explicitly show that a naive inclusion of the Chern-Simons term cannot reproduce the desired chiral anomaly in QCD, and hence, some counterterms should be provided: This implies that the holographic QCD models of hard-wall type cannot give definite predictions for the intrinsic parity-odd vertices involving vector and axial-vector mesons. After integrating out the vector mesons from the HLS Lagrangian, we further obtain the Lagrangian of chiral perturbation theory for pseudoscalar mesons with all the low-energy constants fully determined.

Enhancement of Chiral Symmetry Breaking from the Pion condensation at finite isospin chemical potential in a holographic QCD model

We study the pion condensation at finite isospin chemical potential using a holographic QCD model. By solving the equations of motion for the pion fields together with those for the iso-singlet scalar and iso-triplet vector meson fields, we show that the phase transition from the normal phase to the pion condensation phase is second order with the mean field exponent, and that the critical value of the isospin chemical potential $μ_I$ is equal to the pion mass, consistently with the result obtained by the chiral effective Lagrangian at $O(p^2)$. For higher chemical potential, we find a deviation, which can be understood as a higher order effect in the chiral effective Lagrangian. We investigate the $μ_I$-dependence of the chiral condensate defined by $\tildeσ \equiv \sqrt{ \langle σ\rangle^2 + \langle π^a \rangle^2 }$. We find that $\tildeσ$ is almost constant in the small $μ_I$ region, while it grows with $μ_I$ in the large $μ_I$ region. This implies that the strength of the chiral symmetry breaking is not changed for small $μ_I$: The isospin chemical potential plays a role to rotate the "vacuum angle" of the chiral circle $\tan^{-1} \sqrt{ \langle π^a \rangle^2 / \langle σ\rangle^2 } $ with keeping the "radius" $\tildeσ$ unchanged for small $μ_I$. For large $μ_I$ region, on the other hand, the chiral symmetry breaking is enhanced by the existence of $μ_I$.

Equation of state in the pion condensation phase in the asymmetric nuclear matter using a holographic QCD model

We study the asymmetric nuclear matter using a holographic QCD model by introducing a baryonic charge in the infrared boundary. We first show that, in the normal hadron phase, the predicted values of the symmetry energy and it's slope parameter are comparable with the empirical values. We find that the phase transition from the normal phase to the pion condensation phase is delayed compared with the pure mesonic matter: The critical chemical potential is larger than the pion mass which is obtained for the pure mesonic matter. We also show that, in the pion condensation phase, the pion contribution to the isospin number density increases with the chemical potential, while the baryonic contribution is almost constant. Furthermore, the value of chiral condensation implies that the enhancement of the chiral symmetry breaking occurs in the asymmetric nuclear matter as in the pure mesonic matter. We also give a discussion on how to understand the delay in terms of the 4-dimensional chiral Lagrangian including the rho and omega mesons based on the hidden local symmetry.

Mass degeneracy of the heavy-light mesons with chiral partner structure in the half-skyrmion phase

We explore the mass splitting of the heavy-light mesons with chiral partner structure in nuclear matter. In our calculation, we employed the heavy hadron chiral perturbation theory with chiral partner structure and the nuclear matter is constructed by putting skyrmions from the standard Skyrme model onto the face-centered cubic crystal and regarding the skyrmion matter as nuclear matter. We find that, although the masses of the heavy-light mesons with chiral partner structure are splitted in the matter-free space and skyrmion phase, they are degenerated in the half-skyrmion phase in which the chiral symmetry is restored globally. This observation suggests that the magnitude of the mass splitting of the heavy-light mesons with chiral partner structure can be used as a probe of the phase structure of the nuclear matter.

Pion condensation phase at finite isospin chemical potential in a Holographic QCD model

We summarize main points of our recent work where we studied the pion condensation for non-zero isospin chemical potential within a holographic QCD model. We confirmed that the second order phase transition with the mean field exponent occurs when the isospin chemical potential $μ_I$ exceed the pion mass, which is consistent with the result obtained by the chiral effective Lagrangian at $O(p^2)$. We find that a deviation for large $μ_I$ region can be understood as a higher order effects in the chiral effective Lagrangian. Our result shows that the chiral condensate defined by $\tildeσ \equiv \sqrt{ \langle σ\rangle^2 + \langle π^a \rangle^2 }$ is almost constant in the small $μ_I$ region, while it grows with $μ_I$ in the large $μ_I$ region showing an enhancement of the chiral symmetry breaking.

Chiral partner structure of heavy baryons from the bound state approach with hidden local symmetry

The chiral partner structure of heavy baryons is studied using the bound state approach by binding the heavy-light mesons to nucleon as soliton in an effective Lagrangian for the pseudoscalar and vector mesons based on the hidden local symmetry. In the heavy-light meson sector, we regard the $H$-doublet and $G$-doublet as chiral partners and couple them to light meson with minimal derivative. We find that the chiral partner of $Λ_c(1/2^+,2286)$ is the $Λ_c(1/2^-,3/2^-)$ heavy quark doublet with the mass of about 3.1\,GeV but not ($Λ_c(1/2^-,2595)$, $Λ_c(3/2^-,2625)$) which might be interpreted as an orbital excitation of the $Λ_c(1/2^+,2286)$. The same model is applied to the bottom sector, and the chiral partner of $Λ_b(1/2^+,5625)$ is shown to have the mass of about 6.5\,GeV. The chiral partner structures for the isospin vector heavy baryons are also discussed. For the pentaquark states, we find that the masses of the pentaquark state made of ground state heavy-light meson and its chiral partner are similar, and both of them are below the $Dp$ threshold, which therefore cannot be ruled out by the present data.

Dense Baryonic Matter in Hidden Local Symmetry Approach: Half-Skyrmions and Nucleon Mass

Hadron properties in dense medium are treated in a unified way in a skyrmion model constructed with an effective Lagrangian, in which the rho and omega vector mesons are introduced as hidden gauge bosons, valid up to O(p^4) terms in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. All the low energy constants - apart from f_pi and m_rho - are fixed by the master formula derived from the relation between 5-D hQCD and 4-D HLS. This allows one to pin down the density n_1/2 at which the skyrmions in medium fractionize into half-skyrmions, bringing in a drastic change in the EoS of dense matter. We find that the U(1) field that figures in the CS term in the hQCD action or equivalently the omega field in the hWZ term in the dimensionally reduced HLS action plays a crucial role in the half-skyrmion phase. The importance of the omega degree of freedom may be connected to what happens in the instanton structure of elementary baryon noticed in hQCD. The most striking and intriguing in what is found in the model is that f_pi that smoothly drops with increasing density in the skyrmion phase stops decreasing at n_1/2 and remains nearly constant in the half-skyrmion phase. In accordance with the large N_c consideration, the baryon mass also stays non-scaling in the half-skyrmion phase. This feature which is reminiscent of the parity-doublet baryon model with a chirally invariant mass m_0 is supported by the nuclear EFT with the parameters of the Lagrangian scaling modified at the skyrmion-half-skyrmion phase transition. It also matches with one-loop RG analysis based on HLS. A link between a non-vanishing m_0 and the origin of nucleon mass distinctive from dynamically generated mass is suggested. We briefly discuss the possible consequences of the topology change found in this paper on the forthcoming experiments at the RIB machines under construction.

Parity doubling structure of nucleon at non-zero density in the holographic mean field theory

We develope the holographic mean field theory approach in a bottom-up holographic QCD model including baryons and scalar mesons in addition to vector mesons and pions. We study the effect of parity doubling structure of baryons at non-zero density to the equation of state between the chemical potential and the baryon number density. We first show that we can adjust the amount of nucleon mass coming from the chiral symmetry breaking by changing the boundary value of the five-dimensional baryon fields. Then, introducing the mean field for the baryon fields, we calculate the equation of state between the baryon number density and its corresponding chemical potential. Then, comparing the predicted equation of state with the one obtained in a Walecka type model, we extract the density dependence of the effective nucleon mass. The result shows that the effective mass decreases with increasing density, and that the rate of decreasing is more rapid for the larger percentage of the mass coming from the chiral symmetry breaking.

Skyrmions with vector mesons in the hidden local symmetry approach

The roles of light $ρ$ and $ω$ vector mesons in the Skyrmion are investigated in a chiral Lagrangian derived from the hidden local symmetry (HLS) up to $O(p^4)$ including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino (hWZ) terms. We write a general "master formula" that allows us to determine the parameters of the HLS Lagrangian from a class of holographic QCD models valid at large $N_c$ and $λ$ ('t Hooft constant) limit by integrating out the infinite towers of vector and axial-vector mesons other than the lowest $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons. Within this approach we find that the physical properties of the Skyrmion as the solitonic description of baryons are \textit{independent} of the HLS parameter $a$. Therefore the only parameters of the model are the pion decay constant and the vector meson mass. Once determined in the meson sector, we have a totally parameter-free theory that allows us to study unequivocally the role of light vector mesons in the Skyrmion structure. We find, as suggested by Sutcliffe, that inclusion of the $ρ$ meson reduces the soliton mass, which makes the Skyrmion come closer to the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) soliton, but the role of the $ω$ meson is found to increase the soliton mass. In a stark contrast, the $Δ$-$N$ mass difference, which is determined by the moment of inertia in adiabatic collective quantization of the Skyrmion, is increased by the $ρ$ vector meson, while it is reduced by the inclusion of the $ω$ meson. All these observations show the importance of the $ω$ meson in the properties of the nucleon and nuclear matter in the Skyrme model.

Skyrmions, half-skyrmions and nucleon mass in dense baryonic matter

We explore the hadron properties in dense baryonic matter in a unified way by using a Skyrme model constructed with an effective Lagrangian which includes the $ρ$ and $ω$ vector mesons as hidden gauge bosons and is valid up to $O(p^4)$ in chiral expansion including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino terms. With the two input values of pion decay constant and the lowest lying vector meson mass which can be fixed in free space, all the other low energy constants in the effective Lagrangian are determined by their master formulas derived from holographic QCD models, which allows us to study the baryonic matter properties with no additional free parameters and thus without ambiguities. We find that the $ω$ field that figures in the homogeneous Wess-Zumino term plays a crucial role in the skyrmion structure and its matter properties. The most striking and intriguing observation is that the pion decay constant that smoothly drops with increasing density in the Skyrmion phase stops decreasing at $n_{1/2}^{}$ at which the skyrmions in medium fractionize into half-skyrmions and remains nearly constant in the half-skyrmion phase. In accordance with the large $N_c$ consideration, the baryon mass also stays non-scaling in the half-skyrmion phase. This feature is supported by the nuclear effective field theory with the parameters of the Lagrangian scaling modified at the skyrmion--half-skyrmion phase transition. Our exploration also uncovers the crucial role of the $ω$ meson in multi-baryon systems as well as in the structure of a single skyrmion.

Effect of sigma meson on the $D_1(2430) \to Dππ$ decay

We study the effect of sigma meson on the $D_1(2430) \to Dππ$ decay by constructing an effective Lagrangian preserving the chiral symmetry and the heavy quark symmetry. The sigma meson is included through a linear sigma model, in which both the $q\bar{q}$ and $qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$ states are incorporated respecting their different $U(1)_{A}$ transformation properties. We first fit the sigma meson mass and $σ$-$π$-$π$ coupling constant to the I=0, $S$-wave $π$-$π$ scattering data. Then, we show how the differential decay width $dΓ(D_1 \to D(ππ)_{I = 0, L =0})/d m_{ππ}$ depends on the quark structure of the sigma meson. We find that our study, combing with the future data, can give a clue to understand the sigma meson structure.

Hidden Local Symmetry and Infinite Tower of Vector Mesons for Baryons

In an effort to access dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars in a unified framework that handles both single baryon and multibaryon systems on the same footing, we first address a holographic dual action for a single baryon focusing on the role of the infinite tower of vector mesons deconstructed from five dimensions. To leading order in 't Hooft coupling $λ=N_c g_{\rm YM}^2$, one has the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Skyrmion that results when the warping of the bulk background and the Chern-Simons term in the Sakai-Sugimoto D4/D8-${\bar{\rm D8}}$ model are ignored. The infinite tower was found by Sutcliffe to induce flow to a conformal theory, i.e., the BPS. We compare this structure to that of the SS model consisting of a 5D Yang-Mills action in warped space and the Chern-Simons term in which higher vector mesons are integrated out while preserving hidden local symmetry and valid to $O(λ^0)$ and $O(p^4)$ in the chiral counting. We point out the surprisingly important role of the $ω$ meson that figures in the Chern-Simons term that encodes chiral anomaly in the baryon structure and that may be closely tied to short-range repulsion in nuclear interactions.

Holographic Mean-Field Theory for Baryon Many-Body Systems

We propose a mean-field approach to analyze many-body systems of fermions in the gauge/gravity duality. We introduce a non-vanishing classical fermionic field in the gravity dual, which we call the holographic mean field for fermions. The holographic mean field takes account of the many-body dynamics of the fermions in the bulk. The regularity condition of the holographic mean field fixes the relationship between the chemical potential and the density unambiguously. Our approach provides a new framework of gauge/gravity duality for finite-density systems of baryons in the confinement phase.

Anomalous $ω$-$Z$-$γ$ Vertex from Hidden Local Symmetry

We formulate the general form of omega-Z-gamma vertex in the framework based on the hidden local symmetry (HLS), which arises from the gauge invariant terms for intrinsic parity-odd (IP-odd) part of the effective action. Those terms are given as the homogeneous part of the general solution (having free parameters) to the Wess-Zumino (WZ) anomaly equation and hence are not determined by the anomaly, in sharp contrast to the Harvey-Hill-Hill (HHH) action where the relevant vertex is claimed to be uniquely determined by the anomaly. We show that, even in the framework that HHH was based on, the omega-Z-gamma vertex is actually not determined by the anomaly but by the homogeneous (anomaly-free) part of the general solution to the WZ anomaly equation having free parameters in the same way as in the HLS formulation: The HHH action is just a particular choice of the free parameters in the general solution. We further show that the omega-Z-gamma vertex related to the neutrino (nu) - nucleon (N) scattering cross section sigma(nu N -> nu N (N')gamma) is determined not by the anomaly but by the anomaly-free part of the general solution having free parameters. Nevertheless we find that the cross section sigma(nu N -> nu N(N')gamma) is related through the Ward-Takahashi identity to Gamma(omega -> pi^0 gamma) which has the same parameter-dependence as that of sigma(nu N -> nu N(N')gamma) and hence the ratio sigma(nu N -> nu N(N')gamma)/Gamma(omega -> pi^0 gamma) is fixed independently of these free parameters. Other set of the free parameters of the general solution can be fixed to make the best fit of the omega -> pi^0 l^+ l^- process, which substantially differs from the HHH action. This gives a prediction of the cross section sigma(nu N -> nu N (N')gamma^*(l^+ l^-)) to be tested at nu-N collision experiments in the future.

Integrating Holographic Vector Dominance to Hidden Local Symmetry for the Nucleon Form Factor

We derive a two-parameter formula for the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon described as an instanton by "integrating out" all KK modes other than the lowest mesons from the infinite-tower of vector mesons in holographic QCD while preserving hidden local symmetry for the resultant vector fields. With only two parameters, the proton Sachs form factors can be fit surprisingly well to the available experimental data for momentum transfers $Q^2\lsim 0.5$ GeV$^2$ with $χ^2$/dof $\lsim 2$. We interpret this agreement as indicating the importance of an infinite tower in the soliton structure of the nucleon. The prediction of the Sakai-Sugimoto holographic dual model is checked against the fit values to assess its accuracy in describing the proton structure. We find that the structure of the "core" of roughly 1/3 in the proton size indicated in experiments and commonly associated with an intrinsic quark-gluon structure in QCD is "hidden" in the infinite tower in the holographic model.

Effect of vector--axial-vector mixing to dilepton spectrum

In this write-up we summarize main results of our recent analyses on the mixing between transverse rho and a1 mesons in hot and/or dense matter. We show that the axial-vector meson contributes significantly to the vector spectral function in hot matter through the mixing. In dense baryonic matter, we include a mixing through a set of omega rho a1 -type interactions. We show that a clear enhancement of the vector spectral function appears below \sqrt{s}=m_ρfor small three-momenta of the rho meson, and thus the vector spectrum exhibits broadening.

Holographic QCD Integrated back to Hidden Local Symmetry

We develop a previously proposed gauge-invariant method to integrate out infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of vector and axialvector mesons in a class of models of holographic QCD (HQCD). The HQCD is reduced by our method to the chiral perturbation theory with the hidden local symmetry (HLS) having only the lowest KK mode identified as the HLS gauge boson. We take the Sakai-Sugimoto model as a concrete HQCD, and completely determine the ${\cal O} (p^4)$ terms as well as the ${\cal O}(p^2)$ terms from the DBI part and the anomaly-related (intrinsic parity odd) gauge-invariant terms from the CS part. Effects of higher KK modes are fully included in these terms. To demonstrate power of our method, we compute momentum-dependences of several form factors such as the pion electromagnetic form factors, the $π^0$-$γ$ and $ω$-$π^0$ transition form factors compared with experiment, which was not achieved before due to complication to handle infinite sums. We also study other anomaly-related quantities like $γ^*$-$π^0$-$π^+$-$π^-$ and $ω$-$π^0$-$π^+$-$π^-$ vertex functions.

The nature of the "core" in the nucleon structure is reassessed in light of the results obtained with the infinite-tower structure.

Masses of vector bosons in two-color dense QCD based on the hidden local symmetry

We construct a low energy effective Lagrangian for the two-color QCD including the "vector" bosons (mesons with J^P=1^- and diquark baryons with J^P=1^+) in addition to the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons with a degenerate mass M_π(mesons with J^P=0^- and baryons with J^P=0^+) based on the chiral symmetry breaking pattern of SU(2N_f) \to Sp(2N_f) in the framework of the hidden local symmetry. We investigate the dependence of the "vector" boson masses on the baryon number density μ_B. We show that the μ_B-dependence signals the phase transition of U(1)_B breaking. We find that it gives information about mixing among "vector" bosons: e.g. the mass difference between ρand ωmesons is proportional to the mixing strength between the diquark baryon with J^P=1^+ and the anti-baryon. We discuss the comparison with lattice data for two-color QCD at finite density.

Properties of X(3872) as a hadronic molecule with a negative parity

We discuss the possible interpretation of X(3872) as a $DD^{\ast}$ hadronic molecule with $J^{PC} = 2^{-+}$. Using the phenomenological Lagrangian approach, we studied its radiative and strong decay properties. We find that our model with about 97.6% isospin zero component explains the existing data nicely. We predict the partial widths of the radiative and strong decays of X(3872) and show that the measurement of the ratio $\mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to χ_{c0}π^0)/\mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to χ_{c1}π^0)$ may signal the nature of X(3872).

Strong and radiative decays of X(3872) as a hadronic molecule with a negative parity

Properties of X(3872) are studied by regarding it as a $DD^{\ast}$ hadronic molecule with $J^{PC} = 2^{-+}$ in the phenomenological Lagrangian approach. We find that our model with about 97.6% isospin zero component explains the existing data nicely, for example, the ratio $\mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to J/ψπ^+π^-π^0)/\mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to J/ψπ^+π^-)$. We predict the partial widths of the radiative decays of $X(3872) \to γJ/ψ$, $γψ(2S) $ and the strong decays of $X(3872) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-$, $J/ψπ^+π^-π^0$ as well as $X(3872) \to χ_{cJ}π^0$. Our analysis shows that the measurement of the ratio $\mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to χ_{c0}π^0)/\mathcal{B}(X(3872) \to χ_{c1}π^0)$ may signal the nature of X(3872).

Quark spectrum above the critical temperature from Schwinger-Dyson equation

We investigate a spectrum of a fermion, which we call a quark, above the critical temperature of the chiral phase transition in a gauge theory using the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) equation. The SD equation enables us to study the spectrum over a wide range of the gauge coupling. It is shown that the quark spectrum has two sharp peaks which correspond to the normal quasi-quark and the plasmino and is consistent with that obtained in the hard thermal loop approximation in the weak coupling region, while it has also two peaks but with smaller thermal masses and broader widths in the strong coupling region. Temperature-dependence of the quark spectrum is also discussed.

The Pion Velocity at Chiral Restoration and the Vector Manifestation

We study the effects of Lorentz non-invariance on the physical pion velocity at the critical temperature $T_c$ in an effective theory of hidden local symmetry (HLS) with the "vector manifestation" fixed point. We match at a "matching scale" $Λ_M$ the axial-vector current correlator in the HLS with the one in the operator product expansion for QCD, and present the matching condition to determine the bare pion velocity. We find that the physical pion velocity, which is found to be one at $T=T_c$ when starting from the Lorentz invariant bare HLS, remains close to one with the Lorentz non-invariance, $v_π(T_c) = 0.83 - 0.99$. This result is quite similar to the pion velocity in dense matter.

Aspects of Soft and Spontaneous CP Violation

We study four different models for CP violation: the standard (KM) model, the aspon model of spontaneous breaking and two models of soft breaking. In all except the standard model, the strong CP problem is addressed and solved. Testable predictions for the area of the unitarity triangle and for (epsilon'/epsilon)_K are emphasized. The issue of CP violation may well become the first place where the standard model of particle theory is shown definitively to be deficient. There are two reasons for expecting this to happen: (1) the strong CP problem is still not understood in the unadorned standard model and (2) the KM mechanism, although unquestionably present, may not provide the full explanation of epsilon_K and (epsilon'/epsilon)_K.

Chiral Phase Transition of QCD at Finite Temperature and Density from Schwinger-Dyson Equation

We study the chiral phase transition of QCD at finite temperature and density by numerically solving Schwinger-Dyson equation for the quark propagator with the improved ladder approximation in the Landau gauge. Using the solution we calculate a pion decay constant from a generalized version of Pagels-Stokar formula. Chiral phase transition point is determined by analyzing an effective potential for the quark propagator. We find solutions for which chiral symmetry is broken while the value of the effective potential is larger than that for the chiral symmetric vacuum. These solutions correspond to meta-stable states, and the chiral symmetric vacuum is energetically favored. We present a phase diagram on the general temperature--chemical potential plane, and show that phase transitions are of first order in wide range.

Kaon Spontaneous CP Violation Reevaluated

The CP parameters $ε$ and $ε'/ε$ are calculated in the aspon model of spontaneous CP violation, a model which solves the strong CP problem. A new range for the scale of spontaneous breaking of CP is found. It is shown that $ε'/ε$ is suppressed by $\sim x^2 v^2/(κ^2 \sin^5 θ_C) \sim 5 \times 10^{-3}$ relative to the Standard Model. If experiment finds that $ε'/ε$ is $10^{-4}$ or greater in magnitude, it will mean that the present approach to spontaneous CP violation is excluded.

Generalization of the Bound State Model

In the bound state approach the heavy baryons are constructed by binding, with any orbital angular momentum, the heavy meson multiplet to the nucleon considered as a soliton in an effective meson theory. We point out that this picture misses an entire family of states, labeled by a different angular momentum quantum number, which are expected to exist according to the geometry of the three-body constituent quark model (for N_C=3). To solve this problem we propose that the bound state model be generalized to include orbitally excited heavy mesons bound to the nucleon. In this approach the missing angular momentum is ``locked-up'' in the excited heavy mesons. In the simplest dynamical realization of the picture we give conditions on a set of coupling constants for the binding of the missing heavy baryons of arbitrary spin. The simplifications made include working in the large M limit, neglecting nucleon recoil corrections, neglecting mass differences among different heavy spin multiplets and also neglecting the effects of light vector mesons.

QCD S Parameter from Inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter Equation

We calculate the low-energy parameter S in QCD, which is also known as L_{10}, and the pion decay constant f_πusing inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation in improved ladder approximation. To extract these quantities we calculate the ``V-A'' two-point function, Π_{VV}(q^2) - Π_{AA}(q^2), in space-like region. We obtain S = 0.43 \sim 0.48, which is about 30% larger than the experimental value. The calculated f_πis well consistent with the result by solving the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation for pion. We also evaluate $S$ parameter in SU(3) gauge theory with N_D doublets of fermions in connection with walking technicolor model, and find that the value of S/N_D hardly depends on N_D.
