The International Linear Collider: Report to Snowmass 2021

The International Linear Collider (ILC) is on the table now as a new global energy-frontier accelerator laboratory taking data in the 2030s. The ILC addresses key questions for our current understanding of particle physics. It is based on a proven accelerator technology. Its experiments will challenge the Standard Model of particle physics and will provide a new window to look beyond it. This document brings the story of the ILC up to date, emphasizing its strong physics motivation, its readiness for construction, and the opportunity it presents to the US and the global particle physics community.

Charged lepton flavor violation associated with heavy quark production in deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering via scalar exchange

We study charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) associated with heavy quark pair production in lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering $\ell_i N \to \ell_j q\bar{q} X$. Here $\ell_i$ and $\ell_j$ denote the initial and final leptons; $N$ and $X$ are respectively the initial nucleon and arbitrary final hadronic system. We employ a model Lagrangian in which a scalar and pseudoscalar mediator generates the CLFV. We derive heavy quark structure functions for scalar and pseudoscalar currents and compute momentum distributions of the final lepton for the process. Our focus is on the heavy quark mass effects in the final lepton momentum distribution. We clarify the necessity of inclusion of the heavy quark mass to obtain reliable theory predictions for the CLFV signal searches in the deep-inelastic scattering.

Probing $μe γγ$ contact interactions with $μ\to e$ conversion

Contact interactions of a muon, an electron and two photons can contribute to the decay $μ\to e γγ$, but also to the conversion of a muon into an electron in the electric field of a nucleus. We calculate the $μ\to e$ conversion rate, and show that for the coefficients of operators involving the combination $FF \propto |\vec{E}|^2$ (as opposed to $F\tilde{F} \propto \vec{E} \cdot \vec{B}$), the current bound on $μ\to e$ conversion is more sensitive than the bound on $μ\to e γγ$.

Improved analyses for $μ^-e^-\rightarrow e^-e^-$ in muonic atoms by contact interactions

The charged lepton flavor violating (CLFV) processes of $μ^-e^-\rightarrow e^-e^-$ decay by four Fermi contact interactions in a muonic atom for various atoms are investigated. The wave functions of bound and scattering state leptons are properly treated by solving Dirac equations with Coulomb interaction of the finite nuclear charge distributions. This new effect contributes significantly in particular for heavier atoms, where the obtained decay rate is about one order of magnitude larger than the previous estimation for $^{208}$Pb. We find that, as the atomic number $Z$ increases, the $μ^-e^-\rightarrow e^-e^-$ decay rates increase more rapidly than the result of the previous work of $Z^3$, suggesting this decay as one of the promising processes to search for CLFV interaction.

Muon-Electron Conversion in a Family Gauge Boson Model

We study the $μ$-$e$ conversion in muonic atoms via an exchange of family gauge boson (FGB) $A_{2}^{\ 1}$ in a $U(3)$ FGB model. Within the class of FGB model, we consider three types of family-number assignments for quarks. We evaluate the $μ$-$e$ conversion rate for various target nuclei, and find that next generation $μ$-$e$ conversion search experiments can cover entire energy scale of the model for all of types of the quark family-number assignments. We show that the conversion rate in the model is so sensitive to up- and down-quark mixing matrices, $U^{u}$ and $U^{d}$, where the CKM matrix is given by $V_\text{CKM} = U^{u\dagger} U^d$. Precise measurements of conversion rates for various target nuclei can identify not only the types of quark family-number assignments, but also each quark mixing matrix individually.

130GeV gamma-ray line through axion conversion

We apply the axion-photon conversion mechanism to the 130 GeV $γ$-ray line observed by the Fermi satellite. Near the Galactic center, some astrophysical sources and/or particle dark matter can produce energetic axions (or axionlike particles), and the axions convert to $γ$ rays in Galactic magnetic fields along their flight to the Earth. Since continuum $γ$-ray and antiproton productions are sufficiently suppressed in axion production, the scenario fits the 130 GeV $γ$-ray line without conflicting with cosmic ray measurements. We derive the axion production cross section and the decay rate of dark matter to fit the $γ$-ray excess as functions of axion parameters. In the scenario, the $γ$-ray spatial distributions depend on both the dark matter profile and the magnetic field configuration, which will be tested by future $γ$-ray observations, e.g., H.E.S.S. II, CTA, and GAMMA-400. As an illustrative example, we study realistic supersymmetric axion models, and show the favored parameters that nicely fit the $γ$-ray excess.

Direct Detection of Vector Dark Matter

In this paper we complete formulae for the elastic cross section of general vector dark matter with nucleon in the direct detection at the leading order of the strong coupling constant, assuming that the dark matter is composed of vector particles. As an application of our formulae, the direct detection of the first Kaluza-Klein photon in the minimal universal extra dimension model is discussed. It is found that the cross section is larger than those in the previous works by up to a factor of ten.

Family Gauge Boson Production at the LHC

Family gauge boson production at the LHC is investigated according to a $U(3)$ family gauge model with twisted family number assignment. In the model we study, a family gauge boson with the lowest mass, $A_1^{\ 1}$, interacts only with the first generation leptons and the third generation quarks. (The family numbers are assigned, for example, as $(e_1, e_2, e_3)= (e^-, μ^-, τ^-)$ and $(d_1, d_2, d_3)=(b, d, s) $[or $(d_1, d_2, d_3)=(b, s, d)$]). In the model, the family gauge coupling constant is fixed by relating to the electroweak gauge coupling constant. Thus measurements of production cross sections and branching ratios of $A_1^{\ 1}$ clearly confirm or rule out the model. We calculate the cross sections of inclusive $A_1^{\ 1}$ production and $b \bar{b} \, (t \bar{t})$ associated $A_1^{\ 1}$ production at $\sqrt{s} = 14~\text{TeV}$ and $100~\text{TeV}$. With the dielectron production cross section, we discuss the determination of diagonalizing matrix of quark mass matrix, $U_{u}$ and $U_{d}$, respectively.

Flavor violating $Z'$ from $SO(10)$ SUSY GUT in High-Scale SUSY

We propose an $SO(10)$ supersymmetric grand unified theory (SUSY GUT), where the $SO(10)$ gauge symmetry breaks down to $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y\times U(1)_{X}$ at the GUT scale and $U(1)_X$ is radiatively broken at the SUSY-braking scale. In order to achieve the observed Higgs mass around $126$ GeV and also to satisfy constraints on flavor- and/or CP-violating processes, we assume that the SUSY-breaking scale is $O(100)$ TeV, so that the $U(1)_X$ breaking scale is also $O(100)$ TeV. One big issue in the SO(10) GUTs is how to realize realistic Yukawa couplings. In our model, not only ${\bf 16}$-dimensional but also ${\bf 10}$-dimensional matter fields are introduced to predict the observed fermion masses and mixings. The Standard-Model quarks and leptons are linear combinations of the ${\bf 16}$- and ${\bf 10}$-dimensional fields so that the $U(1)_{X}$ gauge interaction may be flavor-violating. We investigate the current constraints on the flavor-violating $Z'$ interaction from the flavor physics and discuss prospects for future experiments.

Improved analysis of the CLFV decay of muonic atoms $μ^-e^-\rightarrow e^-e^-$

Koike et al. proposed the charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) decay of the muonic atom $μ^-e^-\rightarrow e^-e^-$ as one of the promising processes to search for new physics beyond the standard model. It was found that the attractive interaction of leptons with the nucleus enhances the transition rate of the $μ^-e^-\rightarrow e^-e^-$ process. We report on our improved analysis of this process by taking into account the distortion of the out-going electrons in the nuclear Coulomb potential and the relativistic treatment of the muon and the electrons. As results, we found significant enhancement of the transition rate. The transition rate for $^{208}$Pb becomes about 7 times larger than the previous estimation, which enhances the sensitivity of this process to discover the CLFV interaction. We also report on the energy spectrum of the out-going electron.

Leptogenesis in $E_6 \times U(1)_A$ SUSY GUT model

We study the thermal leptogenesis in the $E_6\times U(1)_A$ SUSY GUT model in which realistic masses and mixings of quarks and leptons can be realized. We show that the sufficient baryon number can be produced by the leptogenesis in the model, in which the mass parameter of the lightest right-handed neutrino is predicted to be smaller than $10^8$ GeV. The essential point is that the mass of the lightest right-handed neutrino can be enhanced in the model because it has a lot of mass terms whose mass parameters are predicted to be the same order of magnitude which is smaller than $10^8$ GeV. We show that O(10) enhancement for the lightest right-handed neutrino mass is sufficient for the observed baryon asymmetry. Note that such mass enhancements do not change the predictions of neutrino masses and mixings at the low energy scale in the $E_6$ model which has six right-handed neutrinos. In the calculation, we include the effects of supersymmetry and flavor in final states of the right-handed neutrino decay. We show that the effect of supersymmetry is quite important even in the strong washout regime when the effect of flavor is included. This is because the washout effects on the asymmetries both of the muon and the electron become weaker than that of the tau asymmetry.

Way to crosscheck $μ$-$e$ conversion in the case of no signals of $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to 3e$

We consider the case that $μ$-$e$ conversion signal is discovered but other charged lepton flavor violating (cLFV) processes will never be found. In such a case, we need other approaches to confirm the $μ$-$e$ conversion and its underlying physics without conventional cLFV searches. We study R-parity violating (RPV) SUSY models as a benchmark. We briefly review that our interesting case is realized in RPV SUSY models with reasonable settings according to current theoretical/experimental status. We focus on the exotic collider signatures at the LHC ($pp \to μ^- e^+$ and $pp \to jj$) as the other approaches. We show the correlations between the branching ratio of $μ$-$e$ conversion process and cross sections of these processes. It is first time that the correlations are graphically shown. We exhibit the RPV parameter dependence of the branching ratio and the cross sections, and discuss the feasibility to determine the parameters.

Big-bang nucleosynthesis through bound-state effects with a long-lived slepton in the NMSSM

We show that the Li problems can be solved in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model where the slepton as the next-to-lightest SUSY particle is very long-lived. Such a long-lived slepton induces exotic nuclear reactions in big-bang nucleosynthesis, and destroys and produces the $^7$Li and $^6$Li nuclei via bound state formation. We study cases where the lightest SUSY particle is singlino-like neutralino and bino-like neutralino to present allowed regions in the parameter space which is consistent with the observations on the dark matter and the Higgs mass.

Kadanoff-Baym approach to the thermal resonant leptogenesis

Using the non-equilibrium Green function method (Kadanoff-Baym equations) in the expanding universe, we investigate evolution of the lepton number asymmetry when the right-handed (RH) neutrinos have almost degenerate masses $|M_i^2-M_j^2| \ll M_i^2$. The resonantly enhanced $CP$-violating parameter $\varepsilon_i$ associated with the decay of the RH neutrino $N_i$ is obtained. It is proportional to an enhancement factor $(M_i^2-M_j^2) M_i Γ_j/ ((M_i^2-M_j^2)^2 +R_{ij}^2)$ with the regulator $R_{ij}=M_i Γ_i+M_j Γ_j$. The result is consistent with the previous result obtained by Garny et al., in a constant background with an out-of-equilibrium initial state. We discuss the origin of such a regulator, and why it is not like $R_{ij}=M_i Γ_i-M_j Γ_j$.

A first evidence of the CMSSM is appearing soon

We explore the coannihilation region of the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM) being consistent with current experimental/observational results. The requirements from the experimental/observational results are the 125GeV Higgs mass and the relic abundances of both the dark matter and light elements, especially the lithium-7. We put these requirements on the caluculated values, and thus we obtain allowed region. Then we give predictions to the mass spectra of the SUSY particles, the anomalous magnetic moment of muon, branching fractions of the B-meson rare decays, the direct detection of the neutralino dark matter, and the number of SUSY particles produced in 14TeV run at the LHC experiment. Comparing these predictions with current bounds, we show the feasibility of the test for this scenario in near future experiment.

Allowed slepton intergenerational mixing in light of light element abundances

We studied allowed region on the intergenerational mixing parameters of sleptons from a viewpoint of big-bang nucleosynthesis in a slepton-neutralino coannihilation scenario. In this scenario, $^7$Li and $^6$Li problems can be solved by considering exotic reactions caused by bound-state effects with a long-lived slepton. Light element abundances are calculated as functions of the relic density and lifetime of the slepton which considerably depend on the intergenerational mixing parameters. Compared with observational light element abundances, we obtain allowed regions on the intergenerational mixing. Ratio of selectron component to stau component, $c_e$, is allowed in $2\times 10^{-11} \lesssim c_e \lesssim 2\times 10^{-9}$ with solving both the $^7$Li and $^6$Li problems. Similarly, the ratio for smuon, $c_μ$, is allowed in $%2\times 10^{-7} \lesssim c_μ \lesssim 5\times 10^{-5}$ for mass difference between slepton and neutralino, which is smaller than muon mass, and $ %10^{-11}\lesssim c_μ \lesssim 2\times 10^{-10}$ for the mass difference in range between muon mass and 125 MeV. We also discuss collider signatures of the slepton decays. We find characteristic double peaks in momentum distribution of event number of the slepton decays with allowed mixing parameters. Discoveries of the double peaks at future collider experiments should confirm our scenario.

Big-bang nucleosynthesis with a long-lived CHAMP including He4 spallation process

We propose helium-4 spallation processes induced by long-lived stau in supersymmetric standard models, and investigate an impact of the processes on light elements abundances. We show that, as long as the phase space of helium-4 spallation processes is open, they are more important than stau-catalyzed fusion and hence constrain the stau property. This talk is based on works (Jittoh et al., 2011).

Correlation between flavour violating decay of long-lived slepton and tau in the coannihilation scenario with Seesaw mechanism

We investigate flavour violating decays of the long-lived lightest slepton and the tau lepton in the coannihilation region of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with a Seesaw mechanism to generate neutrino masses. We consider a situation where the mass difference between the lightest neutralino, as the Lightest Supersymmetric particle (LSP), and the lightest slepton, as the Next-to-LSP, is smaller than the mass of tau lepton. In this situation, the lifetime of the lightest slepton is very long and it is determined by lepton flavour violating (LFV) couplings because the slepton mainly consists of the lighter stau and the flavour conserving 2-body decay is kinematically forbidden. We show that the lifetime can change many orders of magnitude by varying the Yukawa couplings entering the Seesaw mechanism. We also show that branching ratio of LFV tau decays are strongly correlated with the lightest slepton lifetime. Therefore the branching ratios of LFV tau decays can be determined or constrained by measuring the slepton lifetime at the LHC experiment.

A new idea to search for charged lepton flavor violation using a muonic atom

We propose a new process of mu(-) e(-) -> e(-) e(-) in a muonic atom for a quest of charged lepton flavor violation. The Coulomb attraction from the nucleus in a heavy muonic atom leads to significant enhancement in its rate, compared to mu(+) e(-) -> e(+) e(-). The upper limit of the branching ratio is estimated to be of the orders of O[10^(-17)-10^(-18)] for the photonic and the four Fermi interactions from the present experimental constraints. The search for this process could serve complementarily with the other relevant processes to shed lights upon the nature of charged lepton flavor violation.

Implications of CDMS II result on Higgs sector in the MSSM

We study implications of two dark matter candidate events at CDMS-II on the neutralino dark matter scenario in the supersymmetric standard model, in light of the recent lattice simulation on the strange quark content of a nucleon. The scattering rate of neutralino-nucleon is dominated by Higgs exchange processes and the mass of heavy Higgs boson is predicted for the neutralino of Bino-Higgsino mixing state. In the case of Wino-Higgsino mixing, the Higgs sector may not be constrained.

Reevaluation of Higgs-Mediated mu-e Transition in the MSSM

We discuss the $μ$-$e$ transition processes induced by non-holomorphic Yukawa interactions in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). When supersymmetry is broken, the coupling structures between Higgs doublets and leptons are modified and flavor-changing neutral currents could be generated. In the framework of the MSSM, we calculate those effects to the rates for $\meg$, $\meee$, and $μ$-$e$ conversion in nuclei. We perform more detailed calculations of the lepton flavor violating (LFV) operators in the heavy Higgs decoupling limit than previous works, and show the accurate $\tanβ$ dependence of them. Furthermore, we compare the contribution to the LFV operators mediated by Higgs bosons with the one generated gaugino/slepton exchange, and discuss the competition between these two effects.

Stau relic density at the Big-Bang nucleosynthesis era consistent with the abundance of the light element nuclei in the coannihilation scenario

We calculate the relic density of stau at the beginning of the Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) era in the coannihilation scenario of minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). In this scenario, stau can be long-lived and form bound states with nuclei. We put constraints on the parameter space of MSSM by connecting the calculation of the relic density of stau to the observation of the light elements abundance, which strongly depends on the relic density of stau. Consistency between the theoretical prediction and the observational result, both of the dark matter abundance and the light elements abundance, requires the mass difference between the lighter stau and the lightest neutralino to be around 100MeV, the stau mass to be 300 -- 400 GeV, and the mixing angle of the left and right-handed staus to be $\sinθ_τ = (0.65 \textrm{--} 1)$.

Tests of a Family Gauge Symmetry Model at 10^3 TeV Scale

Based on a specific model with U(3) family gauge symmetry at $10^3$ TeV scale, we show its experimental signatures to search for. Since the gauge symmetry is introduced with a special purpose, its gauge coupling constant and gauge boson mass spectrum are not free. The current structure in this model leads to family number violations via exchange of extra gauge bosons. We investigate present constraints from flavor changing processes and discuss visible signatures at LHC and lepton colliders.

The Universal Extra Dimensional Model with $S^2/Z_2$ extra-space

We propose a new Universal Extra Dimensional model that is defined on a six-dimensional spacetime which has a two-sphere orbifold $S^2/Z_2$ as an extra-space. We specify our model by choosing the gauge symmetry as SU(3)$\timesSU(2)\timesU(1)_Y \timesU(1)_X$, introducing field contents in six-dimensions as their zero modes correspond to the Standard model particles, and determining a boundary condition of these fields on orbifold $S^2/Z_2$. A background gauge field that belongs to U(1)$_X$ is introduced there, which is necessary to obtain massless chiral fermions in four-dimensional spacetime. We then analyze Kaluza-Klein(KK) mode expansion of the fields in our model and derive the mass spectrum of the KK particles. We find that the lightest KK particles are the 1st KK particle of massless gauge bosons at tree level. We also discuss the KK parity of the KK modes in our model and confirm the stability of the lightest KK particle which is important for dark matter physics.

Production Rate of Second KK Gauge Bosons in UED Models at LHC

We calculate the production rates of the second Kaluza-Klein (KK) photon $γ^{(2)}$ and Z boson $Z^{(2)}$ at the LHC including all significant processes in the minimal universal extra dimension (MUED) model. For discrimination of the MUED model from other TeV scale models in hadron collider experiments, $γ^{(2)}$ and $Z^{(2)}$ play a crucial role. In order to discuss the discrimination and calculate their production rates, we derive effective Lagrangian containing KK number violating operators. We show that KK number violating processes are extremely important for the compactification scale larger than 800 GeV. We find that, with an integrated luminosity of 100 fb$^{-1}$, $γ^{(2)}$ and $Z^{(2)}$ are produced 10$^6$ - 10$^2$ for the compactification scale between 400 GeV and 2000 GeV.
