Generalized disformal Horndeski theories: cosmological perturbations and consistent matter coupling

Invertible disformal transformations are a useful tool to investigate ghost-free scalar-tensor theories. By performing a higher-derivative generalization of the invertible disformal transformation on Horndeski theories, we construct a novel class of ghost-free scalar-tensor theories, which we dub generalized disformal Horndeski theories. Specifically, these theories lie beyond the quadratic/cubic DHOST class. We explore cosmological perturbations to identify a subclass where gravitational waves propagate at the speed of light and clarify the conditions for the absence of ghost/gradient instabilities for tensor and scalar perturbations. We also investigate the conditions under which a matter field can be consistently coupled to these theories without introducing unwanted extra degrees of freedom.

Invertible disformal transformations with higher derivatives

We consider a higher-derivative generalization of disformal transformations in $D$-dimensional spacetime and clarify the conditions under which they form a group with respect to the matrix product and the functional composition. These conditions allow us to systematically construct the inverse transformation in a fully covariant manner. Applying the invertible generalized disformal transformation to known ghost-free scalar-tensor theories, we obtain a novel class of ghost-free scalar-tensor theories, whose action contains the third- or higher-order derivatives of the scalar field as well as nontrivial higher-order derivative couplings to the curvature tensor.

Linear stability of black holes in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories with a time-independent scalar field

We study linear perturbations about static and spherically symmetric black holes with a time-independent background scalar field in shift-symmetric Horndeski theories, whose Lagrangian is characterized by coupling functions depending only on the kinetic term of the scalar field $X$. We clarify conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities along the radial and angular directions in both odd- and even-parity perturbations. For reflection-symmetric theories described by a k-essence Lagrangian and a nonminimal derivative coupling with the Ricci scalar, we show that black holes endowed with nontrivial scalar hair are unstable around the horizon in general. This includes nonasymptotically flat black holes known to exist when the nonminimal derivative coupling to the Ricci scalar is a linear function of $X$. We also investigate several black hole solutions in nonreflection-symmetric theories. For cubic Galileons with the Einstein-Hilbert term, there exists a nonasymptotically flat hairy black hole with no ghosts/Laplacian instabilities. Also, for the scalar field linearly coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet term, asymptotically flat black hole solutions constructed perturbatively with respect to a small coupling are free of ghosts/Laplacian instabilities.

Linear stability of black holes with static scalar hair in full Horndeski theories: generic instabilities and surviving models

In full Horndeski theories, we show that the static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions with a static scalar field~$ϕ$ whose kinetic term~$X$ is nonvanishing on the BH horizon are generically prone to ghost/Laplacian instabilities. We then search for asymptotically Minkowski hairy BH solutions with a vanishing $X$ on the horizon free from ghost/Laplacian instabilities. We show that models with regular coupling functions of $ϕ$ and $X$ result in no-hair Schwarzschild BHs in general. On the other hand, the presence of a coupling between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term $R_{\rm GB}^2$, even with the coexistence of other regular coupling functions, leads to the realization of asymptotically Minkowski hairy BH solutions without ghost/Laplacian instabilities. Finally, we find that hairy BH solutions in power-law $F(R_{\rm GB}^2)$ gravity are plagued by ghost instabilities. These results imply that the GB coupling of the form $ξ(ϕ)R_{\rm GB}^2$ plays a prominent role for the existence of asymptotically Minkowski hairy BH solutions free from ghost/Laplacian instabilities.

Resolving the pathologies of self-interacting Proca fields: A case study of Proca stars

It has been argued that a self-interacting massive vector field is pathological due to a dynamical formation of a singular effective metric of the vector field, which is the onset of a gradient or ghost instability. We discuss that this singularity formation is not necessarily a fundamental problem but a breakdown of the effective field theory (EFT) description of the massive vector field. By using a model of ultraviolet (UV) completion of the massive vector field, we demonstrate that a Proca star, a self-gravitating condensate of the vector field, continues to exist even after the EFT suffers from a gradient instability without any pathology at UV, in which the EFT description is still valid and the gradient instability in EFT may be interpreted as a standard dynamical instability of a high-density boson star from the UV perspective. On the other hand, we find that the EFT description is broken before the ghost instability appears. This suggests that a heavy degree of freedom may be spontaneously excited to cure the pathology of the EFT as the EFT dynamically tends to approach the onset of the ghost instability.

Stability of neutron stars in Horndeski theories with Gauss-Bonnet couplings

In Horndeski theories containing a scalar coupling with the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) curvature invariant $R_{\rm GB}^2$, we study the existence and linear stability of neutron star (NS) solutions on a static and spherically symmetric background. For a scalar-GB coupling of the form $αξ(ϕ) R_{\rm GB}^2$, where $ξ$ is a function of the scalar field $ϕ$, the existence of linearly stable stars with a nontrivial scalar profile without instabilities puts an upper bound on the strength of the dimensionless coupling constant $|α|$. To realize maximum masses of NSs for a linear (or dilatonic) GB coupling $α_{\rm GB}ϕR_{\rm GB}^2$ with typical nuclear equations of state, we obtain the theoretical upper limit $\sqrt{|α_{\rm GB}|}<0.7~{\rm km}$. This is tighter than those obtained by the observations of gravitational waves emitted from binaries containing NSs. We also incorporate cubic-order scalar derivative interactions, quartic derivative couplings with nonminimal couplings to a Ricci scalar besides the scalar-GB coupling and show that NS solutions with a nontrivial scalar profile satisfying all the linear stability conditions are present for certain ranges of the coupling constants. In regularized 4-dimensional Einstein-GB gravity obtained from a Kaluza-Klein reduction with an appropriate rescaling of the GB coupling constant, we find that NSs in this theory suffer from a strong coupling problem as well as Laplacian instability of even-parity perturbations. We also study NS solutions with a nontrivial scalar profile in power-law $F(R_{\rm GB}^2)$ models, and show that they are pathological in the interior of stars and plagued by ghost instability together with the asymptotic strong coupling problem in the exterior of stars.

Static and spherically symmetric general relativity solutions in Minimal Theory of Bigravity

We investigate static and spherically symmetric solutions in the Minimal Theory of Bigravity (MTBG). First, we show that a pair of Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetimes with different cosmological constants and black hole masses written in the spatially-flat Gullstrand-Painlevé (GP) coordinates is a solution in the self-accelerating branch of MTBG, while it cannot be a solution in the normal branch. We then illustrate how Schwarzschild-de Sitter solutions can become compatible with the normal branch when using different coordinates. We also confirm that the self-accelerating branch of MTBG admits static and spherically symmetric general relativity solutions with matter written in the spatially-flat coordinates, including neutron stars with arbitrary matter equations of state. Finally, we show that in the self-accelerating branch nontrivial solutions are given by the Schwarzschild-de Sitter metrics written in nonstandard coordinates.

Spontaneous scalarization of a conducting sphere in Maxwell-scalar models

We study the spontaneous scalarization of a standard conducting charged sphere embedded in Maxwell-scalar models in flat spacetime, wherein the scalar field $ϕ$ is nonminimally coupled to the Maxwell electrodynamics. This setup serves as a toy model for the spontaneous scalarization of charged (vacuum) black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar (generalized scalar-tensor) models. In the Maxwell-scalar case, unlike the black hole cases, closed-form solutions exist for the scalarized configurations. We compute these configurations for three illustrations of nonminimal couplings: one that \textit{exactly} linearizes the scalar field equation, and the remaining two that produce nonlinear continuations of the first one. We show that the former model leads to a runaway behaviour in regions of the parameter space and neither the Coulomb nor the scalarized solutions are stable in the model; but the latter models can heal this behaviour producing stable scalarized solutions that are dynamically preferred over the Coulomb one. This parallels reports on black hole scalarization in the extended-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet models. Moreover, we analyse the impact of the choice of the boundary conditions on the scalarization phenomenon. Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions accommodate both (linearly) stable and unstable parameter space regions, for the scalar-free conducting sphere; but radiative boundary conditions always yield an unstable scalar-free solution and preference for scalarization. Finally, we perform numerical evolution of the full Maxwell-scalar system, following dynamically the scalarization process. They confirm the linear stability analysis and reveal that the scalarization phenomenon can occur in qualitatively distinct ways.

Spontaneous scalarization of charged stars

We study static and spherically symmetric charged stars with a nontrivial profile of the scalar field $ϕ$ in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theories. The scalar field is coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field $A_μ$ with the form $-α(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν}/4$, where $F_{μν}=\partial_μA_ν-\partial_ν A_μ$ is the field strength tensor. Analogous to the case of charged black holes, we show that this type of interaction can induce spontaneous scalarization of charged stars under the conditions $({\rm d}α/{\rm d}ϕ) (0)=0$ and $({\rm d}^2α/{\rm d}ϕ^2) (0)>0$. For the coupling $α(ϕ)=\exp (-βϕ^2/M_{\rm pl}^2)$, where $β~(<0)$ is a coupling constant and $M_{\rm pl}$ is a reduced Planck mass, there is a branch of charged star solutions with a nontrivial profile of $ϕ$ approaching $0$ toward spatial infinity, besides a branch of general relativistic solutions with a vanishing scalar field, i.e., solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell model. As the ratio $ρ_c/ρ_m$ between charge density $ρ_c$ and matter density $ρ_m$ increases toward its maximum value, the mass $M$ of charged stars in general relativity tends to be enhanced due to the increase of repulsive Coulomb force against gravity. In this regime, the appearance of nontrivial branches induced by negative $β$ of order $-1$ effectively reduces the Coulomb force for a wide range of central matter densities, leading to charged stars with smaller masses and radii in comparison to those in the general relativistic branch. Our analysis indicates that spontaneous scalarization of stars can be induced not only by the coupling to curvature invariants but also by the scalar-gauge coupling in Einstein gravity.

Black holes with a nonconstant kinetic term in degenerate higher-order scalar tensor theories

We investigate static and spherically symmetric black hole (BH) solutions in shift-symmetric quadratic-order degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. We allow a nonconstant kinetic term $X=g^{μν} \partial_μϕ\partial_νϕ$ for the scalar field $ϕ$ and assume that $ϕ$ is, like the spacetime, a pure function of the radial coordinate $r$, namely $ϕ=ϕ(r)$. First, we find analytic static and spherically symmetric vacuum solutions in the so-called {\it Class Ia} DHOST theories, which include the quartic Horndeski theories as a subclass. We consider several explicit models in this class and apply our scheme to find the exact vacuum BH solutions. BH solutions obtained in our analysis are neither Schwarzschild or Schwarzschild (anti-) de Sitter. We show that a part of the BH solutions obtained in our analysis are free of ghost and Laplacian instabilities and are also mode stable against the odd-parity perturbations. Finally, we argue the case that the scalar field has a linear time dependence $ϕ=qt+ψ(r)$ and show several simple examples of nontrivial BH solutions with a nonconstant kinetic term obtained analytically and numerically.

Neutron stars with a generalized Proca hair and spontaneous vectorization

In a class of generalized Proca theories, we study the existence of neutron star solutions with a nonvanishing temporal component of the vector field $A_μ$ approaching 0 toward spatial infinity, as they may be the endpoints of tachyonic instabilities of neutron star solutions in general relativity with $A_μ=0$. Such a phenomenon is called spontaneous vectorization, which is analogous to spontaneous scalarization in scalar-tensor theories with nonminimal couplings to the curvature or matter. For the nonminimal coupling $βX R$, where $β$ is a coupling constant and $X=-A_μA^μ/2$, we show that there exist both 0-node and 1-node vector-field solutions, irrespective of the choice of the equations of state of nuclear matter. The 0-node solution, which is present only for $β=-{\cal O}(0.1)$, may be induced by some nonlinear effects such as the selected choice of initial conditions. The 1-node solution exists for $β=-{\cal O}(1)$, which suddenly emerges above a critical central density of star and approaches the general relativistic branch with the increasing central density. We compute the mass $M$ and radius $r_s$ of neutron stars for some realistic equations of state and show that the $M$-$r_s$ relations of 0-node and 1-node solutions exhibit notable difference from those of scalarized solutions in scalar-tensor theories. Finally, we discuss the possible endpoints of tachyonic instabilities.

Spontaneous vectorization in the presence of vector field coupling to matter

We examine the possibility of spontaneous vectorization in the vector-tensor theories with the vector conformal and disformal couplings to matter. We study the static and spherically symmetric solutions of the relativistic stars with the nontrivial profile of the vector field satisfying the boundary conditions $A_μ\to 0$ at the spatial infinity, where $A_μ$ represents the vector field. First, we study the linear perturbations about the general relativistic (GR) stellar solutions with the vanishing vector field $A_μ=0$. We show that the pure vector disformal coupling causes the ghost or gradient instability of the GR stars, indicating the breakdown of the hyperbolicity on the GR stellar backgrounds. On the other hand, the pure conformal coupling causes the tachyonic instability of the GR solutions and would lead to the spontanenous growth of the vector field toward the nontrivial solutions as in the manner of spontaneous scalarization in the scalar-tensor theories. We then construct the static and spherically symmetric solutions of the relativistic stars with $0$ and $1$ nodes of the vector field in the presence of the pure disformal coupling. We find that the properties of the solutions with the nontrivial vector field are similar to those of the generalized Proca theories. As in the mass-radius diagram the branches of the $0$ and $1$ node solutions are disconnected to that of the GR solutions in the lower density regimes, they may be formed from the selected choice of the initial conditions. Finally, we construct the $0$ node solutions in the case of the pure conformal coupling, and show that the branch of these solutions is connected to that of the GR solutions in both the low and high density regions and hence would arise spontaneously via the continuous evolution from the GR solutions.

Stealth spontaneous spinorization of relativistic stars

We investigate the behavior of the Dirac spinor fields in general relativistic high density stellar backgrounds and the possibility of spontaneous spinorization which is analogous to spontaneous scalarization. We consider the model with the modified kinetic term of the Dirac field by the insertion of the fifth gamma matrix ${\hat γ}^5$ and the conformal coupling of the Dirac spinor field to the matter sector, which would lead to the tachyonic growth of the Dirac spinor field in the high density compact stellar backgrounds. In order to obtain the static and spherically symmetric solutions, we have to consider the two Dirac fields at the same time. We show that in the constant density stellar backgrounds our model gives rise to the nontrivial solutions of the Dirac spinor fields with any number of nodes, where one mode has one more nodes than the other. We also show that at the leading order all the components of the effective energy-momentum tensor of the Dirac spinor fields, after the summation over the two fields, vanish for any separable time-dependent ansatz of the Dirac spinor fields in any static and spherically symmetric spacetime backgrounds, indicating that spontaneous spinorization takes place as a stealth process in the static and spherically symmetric spacetime with any number of nodes, which would be quenched by nonlinear effects and leave no observable effects.

Compact objects in Horndeski gravity

Horndeski gravity holds a special position as the most general extension of Einstein's theory of general relativity with a single scalar degree of freedom and second-order field equations. Because of these features, Horndeski gravity is an attractive phenomenological playground to investigate the consequences of modifications of general relativity in cosmology and astrophysics. We present a review of the progress made so far in the study of compact objects (black holes and neutron stars) within Horndeski gravity. In particular, we review our recent work on slowly rotating black holes and present some new results on slowly rotating neutron stars.

Neutron stars in Horndeski gravity

Horndeski's theory of gravity is the most general scalar-tensor theory with a single scalar whose equations of motion contain at most second-order derivatives. A subsector of Horndeski's theory known as "Fab Four" gravity allows for dynamical self-tuning of the quantum vacuum energy, and therefore it has received particular attention in cosmology as a possible alternative to the $Λ$CDM model. Here we study compact stars in Fab Four gravity, which includes as special cases general relativity ("George"), Einstein-dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity ("Ringo"), theories with a nonminimal coupling with the Einstein tensor ("John") and theories involving the double-dual of the Riemann tensor ("Paul"). We generalize and extend previous results in theories of the John class and were not able to find realistic compact stars in theories involving the Paul class.

Relativistic stars in scalar-tensor theories with disformal coupling

We present a general formulation to analyze the structure of slowly rotating relativistic stars in a broad class of scalar-tensor theories with disformal coupling to matter. Our approach includes theories with generalized kinetic terms, generic scalar field potentials and contains theories with conformal coupling as particular limits. In order to investigate how the disformal coupling affects the structure of relativistic stars, we propose a minimal model of a massless scalar-tensor theory and investigate in detail how the disformal coupling affects the spontaneous scalarization of slowly rotating neutron stars. We show that for negative values of the disformal coupling parameter between the scalar field and matter, scalarization can be suppressed, while for large positive values of the disformal coupling parameter stellar models cannot be obtained. This allows us to put a mild upper bound on this parameter. We also show that these properties can be qualitatively understood by linearizing the scalar field equation of motion in the background of a general-relativistic incompressible star. To address the intrinsic degeneracy between uncertainties in the equation-of-state of neutron stars and gravitational theory, we also show the existence of universal equation-of-state-independent relations between the moment of inertia and compactness of neutron stars in this theory. We show that in a certain range of the theory's parameter space the universal relation largely deviates from that of general relativity, allowing, in principle, to probe the existence of spontaneous scalarization with future observations.

Solutions in the generalized Proca theory with the nonminimal coupling to the Einstein tensor

We investigate the static and spherically symmetric solutions in a class of the generalized Proca theory with the nonminimal coupling to the Einstein tensor. First, we show that the solutions in the scalar-tensor theory with the nonminimal derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor can be those in the generalized Proca theory with the vanishing field strength. We then show that when the field strength takes the nonzero value the static and spherically symmetric solutions can be found only for the specific value of the nonminimal coupling constant. Second, we investigate the first-order slow-rotation corrections to the static and spherically symmetric background. We find that for the background with the vanishing electric field strength the slowly rotating solution is identical to the Kerr- (anti-) de Sitter solutions in general relativity. On the other hand, for the background with the nonvanishing electric field strength the stealth property can realized at the first order in the slow-rotation approximation.

Rotating thin shells in (2+1)-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes: Mechanical properties, Machian effects, and energy conditions

A rotating thin shell in a (2+1)-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetime is studied. The spacetime exterior to the shell is the rotating BTZ spacetime and the interior is the empty spacetime with a cosmological constant. Through the Einstein equation in (2+1)-dimensions and the corresponding junction conditions we calculate the dynamical relevant quantities, namely, the rest energy-density, the pressure, and the angular momentum flux density. We also analyze the matter in a frame where its energy-momentum tensor has a perfect fluid form. In addition, we show that Machian effects, such as the dragging of inertial frames, also occur in rotating (2+1)-dimensional spacetimes. The weak and the dominant energy condition for these shells are discussed.

Slowly rotating black hole solutions in Horndeski gravity

We study black hole solutions at first order in the Hartle-Thorne slow-rotation approximation in Horndeski gravity theories. We derive the equations of motion including also cases where the scalar depends linearly on time. In the Hartle-Thorne formalism, all first-order rotational corrections are described by a single frame-dragging function. We show that the frame-dragging function is exactly the same as in general relativity for all known black hole solutions in shift symmetric Horndeski theories, with the exception of theories with a linear coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Our results extend previous no-hair theorems for a broad class of Horndeski gravity theories.

The Initial State of a Primordial Anisotropic Stage of Inflation

We investigate the possibility that the inflationary period in the early universe was preceded by a primordial stage of strong anisotropy. In particular we focus on the simplest model of this kind, where the spacetime is described by a non-singular Kasner solution that quickly evolves into an isotropic de Sitter space, the so-called Kasner-de Sitter solution. The initial Big Bang singularity is replaced, in this case, by a horizon. We show that the extension of this metric to the region behind the horizon contains a timelike singularity which will be visible by cosmological observers. This makes it impossible to have a reliable prediction of the quantum state of the cosmological perturbations in the region of interest. In this paper we consider the possibility that this Kasner-de Sitter universe is obtained as a result of a quantum tunneling process effectively substituting the region behind the horizon by an anisotropic parent vacuum state, namely a $1+1$ dimensional spacetime compactified over an internal flat torus, $T_2$, which we take it to be of the form ${de Sitter}_2 \times T_2$ or ${Minkowski}_2 \times T_2$. As a first approximation to understand the effects of this anisotropic initial state, we compute the power spectrum of a massless scalar field in these backgrounds. In both cases, the spectrum converges at small scales to the isotropic scale invariant form and only present important deviations from it at the largest possible scales. We find that the decompactification scenario from $M_2 \times T_2$ leads to a suppressed and slightly anisotropic power spectrum at large scales which could be related to some of the anomalies present in the current CMB data. On the other hand, the spectrum of the universe with a $dS_2 \times T_2$ parent vacuum presents an enhancement in power at large scales not consistent with observations.

Thermodynamics of rotating thin shells in the BTZ spacetime

We investigate the thermodynamic equilibrium states of a rotating thin shell, i.e., a ring, in a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant. The inner and outer regions with respect to the shell are given by the vacuum anti-de Sitter and the rotating Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli spacetimes, respectively. The first law of thermodynamics on the thin shell, together with three equations of state for the pressure, the local inverse temperature and the thermodynamic angular velocity of the shell, yields the entropy of the shell, which is shown to depend only on its gravitational radii. When the shell is pushed to its own gravitational radius and its temperature is taken to be the Hawking temperature of the corresponding black hole, the entropy of the shell coincides with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. In addition, we consider simple ansätze for the equations of state, as well as a power-law equation of state where the entropy and the thermodynamic stability conditions can be examined analytically.

Braneworlds with field derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor

In this paper, we investigate the Randall-Sundrum type braneworld models in the scalar-tensor theory with field derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor. We first formulate the generalized junction conditions of the metric and the scalar field on the timelike codimension-one hypersurface (=brane). With the use of these junction conditions, we then derive the Minkowski and de Sitter brane solutions embedded into the $Z_2$-symmetric five-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk spacetime. The configuration of the scalar field depends on the slice of the AdS spacetime. These branes are supported by the tension and not coupled to the scalar field. The Minkowski brane solution can be obtained when the brane tension is tuned to the bulk contributions. Once this tuning relation is broken, the de Sitter brane solutions are obtained. The de Sitter brane solutions have two branches. One has the smooth limit to the case where the scalar field becomes trivial, while the other branch does not. The latter branch has the upper bound on the brane tension, where the expansion rate vanishes. Finally, we investigate the low energy effective gravitational theory realized on the brane, which is given by the four-dimensional Einstein-scalar theory with the corrections from the bulk. In the case that there is no generation of the dark radiation from the bulk scalar field, we recover the the four-dimensional Einstein-scalar theory.

Disformal transformation of cosmological perturbations

We investigate the gauge-invariant cosmological perturbations in the gravity and matter frames in the general scalar-tensor theory where two frames are related by the disformal transformation. The gravity and matter frames are the extensions of the Einstein and Jordan frames in the scalar-tensor theory where two frames are related by the conformal transformation, respectively. First, it is shown that the curvature perturbation in the comoving gauge to the scalar field is disformally invariant as well as conformally invariant, which gives the predictions from the cosmological model where the scalar field is responsible both for inflation and cosmological perturbations. Second, in case that the disformally coupled matter sector also contributes to curvature perturbations, we derive the evolution equations of the curvature perturbation in the uniform matter energy density gauge from the energy (non)conservation in the matter sector, which are independent of the choice of the gravity sector. While in the matter frame the curvature perturbation in the uniform matter energy density gauge is conserved on superhorizon scales for the vanishing nonadiabatic pressure, in the gravity frame it is not conserved even if the nonadiabatic pressure vanishes. The formula relating two frames gives the amplitude of the curvature perturbation in the matter frame, once it is evaluated in the gravity frame.

Solutions in the scalar-tensor theory with nonminimal derivative coupling

We present black hole type solutions in the scalar-tensor theory with nonminimal derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor. The effects of the nonminimal derivative coupling appear in the large scales, while the solutions approach those in the Einstein gravity in the small scales. For the particular coupling constant tuned to the inverse of the cosmological constant, the scalar field becomes trivial and the solutions in the Einstein gravity are recovered. For the other coupling constant, more general solutions can be obtained. If the two-dimensional maximally symmetric space is a two-sphere, the spacetime structure approaches anti-de Sitter spacetime in the large scales. On the other hand, if the two-dimensional space is a two-hyperboloid, the spacetime approaches de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. If it is a flat space, the cosmological constant affects only the amplitude of the scalar field. The extension to the higher-dimensional case is also straightforward. For a certain range of the negative cosmological constant, thermodynamic properties of a black hole are very similar to those of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole in the Einstein gravity.

Cosmological brane systems in warped spacetime

In this paper, we discuss the time-dependent brane solutions in higher-dimensional supergravity theories. We particularly focus on the dynamical extensions of the intersecting brane solutions involving three branes. We also show that in the near-horizon limits, where the time dependence is negligible, these branes describe warped anti-de Sitter spacetimes as in the corresponding static solutions. We finally examine the lower-dimensional cosmological dynamics obtained after compactifications of the higher-dimensional solutions and show the solutions we have found give the four-dimensional universe with power-law expansion.

Cosmology in p-brane systems

We present time-dependent solutions in the higher-dimensional gravity which are related to supergravity in the particular cases. Here, we consider p-branes with a cosmological constant and the intersections of two and more branes. The dynamical description of p-branes can be naturally obtained as the extension of static solutions. In the presence of a cosmological constant, we find accelerating solutions if the dilaton is not dynamical. In the case of intersecting branes, the field equations normally indicate that time-dependent solutions in supergravity can be found if only one harmonic function in the metric depends on time. However, if the special relation between dilaton couplings to antisymmetric tensor field strengths is satisfied, one can find a new class of solutions where all harmonic functions depend on time. We then apply our new solutions to study cosmology, with and without performing compactifications.

Degravitation Features in the Cascading Gravity Model

We obtain the effective gravitational equations on the codimension-2 and codimension-1 branes in the cascading gravity model. We then apply our formulation to the cosmological case and obtain the effective Friedmann equations on the codimension-2 brane, which are generically given in terms of integro-differential equations. Adopting an approximation for which the thickness of the codimension-2 brane is much smaller than the Hubble horizon, we study the Minkowski and de Sitter codimension-2 brane solutions. Studying the cosmological solutions shows that the cascading model exhibits the features necessary for degravitation of the cosmological constant. We also show that only the branch which does not have the smooth limit to the self-accelerating branch in five-dimensional model in the absence of the bulk gravity can satisfy the null energy condition as the criterion of the stability. Note that our solutions are obtained in a different setup from that of the original cascading gravity model in the sense that the codimension-1 brane contains matter fields other than the pure tension.

Dynamics of partially localized brane systems

We study dynamical partially localized brane solutions in higher dimensions. We give new descriptions of the relevant solutions of dynamical branes which are localized along both the overall and relative transverse directions. The starting point is a system of p_r-branes ending on a p_s-brane with a time-dependent warp factor. This system can be related to Dp_r-Dp_s brane system in string theory, where one brane is localized at the delocalized other brane. We then show that these give Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological solutions. Our approach leads to a new and manifest description of the brane configurations near the delocalized branes, and new solutions in the wave or KK-monopole background in terms of certain partial differential equations in D dimensions including ten and eleven dimensions.

Moduli Stabilization in a de Sitter Compactification Model

We discuss the moduli stabilization in a de Sitter compactification model obtained coupling D-dimensional gravity to scalar and gauge fields. This class of models is characterized by two moduli: one related to the volume of the internal space, the other to the warp factor. While the volume modulus can be fixed by appropriately tuning the gauge field strength, curvature of the internal space, and cosmological constant, the same mechanism does not work for the warp modulus. In this paper we discuss a stabilization mechanism based on quantum effects and show that both moduli can be efficiently stabilized.

Non-linear curvature perturbation in multi-field inflation models with non-minimal coupling

Using the δN formalism we consider the non-linear curvature perturbation in multi-field models of inflation with non-minimal coupling. In particular, we focus on the relation between the δN formalism as applied in the conformally related Jordan and Einstein frames. Exploiting results already known in the Einstein frame, we give expressions for the power spectrum, spectral tilt and non-gaussianity associated with the Jordan frame curvature perturbation. In the case that an adiabatic limit has not been reached, we find that in general these quantities differ from those associated with the Einstein frame curvature perturbation, and also confirm their equivalence in the absence of isocurvature modes. We then proceed to consider two analytically soluble examples, the first involving a non-minimally coupled `spectator' field and the second being a non-minimally coupled extension of the multi-brid inflation model. In the first model we find that predictions can easily be brought into agreement with the recent Planck results, as the tensor-to-scalar ratio is generally small, the spectral tilt tuneable and the non-gaussianity suppressed. In the second model we find that predictions for all three parameters can differ substantially from those predicted in the minimally coupled case, and that the recent Planck results for the spectral tilt can be used to constrain the non-minimal coupling parameters.

Curvature perturbation in multi-field inflation with non-minimal coupling

In this paper we discuss a multi-field model of inflation in which generally all fields are non-minimally coupled to the Ricci scalar and have non-canonical kinetic terms. The background evolution and first-order perturbations for the model are evaluated in both the Jordan and Einstein frames, and the respective curvature perturbations compared. We confirm that they are indeed not the same - unlike in the single-field case - and also that the difference is a direct consequence of the isocurvature perturbations inherent to multi-field models. This result leads us to conclude that the notion of adiabaticity is not invariant under conformal transformations. Using a two-field example we show that even if in one frame the evolution is adiabatic, meaning that the curvature perturbation is conserved on super-horizon scales, in general in the other frame isocurvature perturbations continue to source the curvature perturbation. We also find that it is possible to realise a particular model in which curvature perturbations in both frames are conserved but with each being of different magnitude. These examples highlight that the curvature perturbation itself, despite being gauge-invariant, does not correspond directly to an observable. The non-equivalence of the two curvature perturbations would also be important when considering the addition of Standard Model matter into the system.

Higher order spectra from an initially anisotropic universe

In this paper, we present the higher order spectra of a scalar field produced through the higher derivative interactions in the initially anisotropic universe. Although we ignore the backreaction of the scalar field on the geometry, our analysis should have much overlap with the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field in the anisotropic universe. We also include the planar modes whose momenta are along the plane which is perpendicular to the primordial preferred direction, for which effects of the initial anisotropy are not suppressed. The presence of a negative frequency mode produces features distinguishable from the case of the de Sitter inflation. We also show that richer features appear in the trispectra due to the primordial anisotropy.

Warped de Sitter compactifications

We show that the warped de Sitter compactifications are possible under certain conditions in D-dimensional gravitational theory coupled to a dilaton, a form field strength, and a cosmological constant. We find that the solutions of field equations give de Sitter spacetime with the warped structure, and discuss cosmological models directly obtained from these solutions. We also construct a cosmological model in the lower-dimensional effective theory. If there is a field strength having non-vanishing components along the internal space, the moduli can be fixed at the minimum of the effective potential where a de Sitter vacuum can be obtained.

Warped de Sitter compactifications in the scalar-tensor theory

We present new solutions of warped compactifications in the higher-dimensional gravity coupled to the scalar and the form field strengths. These solutions are constructed in the D-dimensional spacetime with matter fields, with the internal space that has a finite volume. Our solutions give explicit examples where the cosmological constant or 0-form field strength leads to a de Sitter spacetime in arbitrary dimensions.

An analytic approach to perturbations from an initially anisotropic universe

We present the analytic forms for the spectra of the cosmological perturbations from an initially anisotropic universe for the high momentum modes in the context of WKB approximations, as the continuation of the work [29]. We consider the Einstein gravity coupled to a light scalar field. We then assume that the scalar field has the zero velocity initially and then slowly rolls down on the potential toward the origin. In the slow-roll approximations, the Kasner-de Sitter universe with a planar symmetry is a good approximation as the background evolution. Quantization of the perturbations in the adiabatic vacuum, which we call the anisotropic vacuum, is carried out. For non-planar high momentum modes whose comoving momentum component orthogonal to the plane is bigger than the Hubble parameter at the inflationary phase, the WKB approximation is valid for the whole stage of the isotropization. On the other hand, the planar modes whose comoving momentum component orthogonal to the plane is comparable to the Hubble parameter, is amplified during the process of the anisotropic expansion. In the final gravitational wave spectra, we find that there is an asymmetry between the two polarizations of the gravitational wave because the initial mode mixing does not vanish.

Constraints on warped compactifications

We discuss a possible compactification of a higher-dimensional gravitational theory, which give rise to a de Sitter or an accelerating universe, to the extent that it can describe a low energy limit of string theory. Such analysis can be carried out by the usual integration over the internal space in the Einstein equations. The combined field equations in the higher-dimensional supergravity theory after integration give several new terms which may help to realize a de Sitter compactification. After developing the general framework, we describe some specific examples involving the dilaton and mass parameter.

Creation of a black hole pair with a domain wall

We study the creation of a black hole (BH) pair separated by a domain wall, in the presence of a cosmological constant. We construct the solution representing a BH pair with a domain wall and compute the Euclidean action to evaluate the probability of the pair creation in the background with a preexisting domain wall. The BHs can be either neutral or magnetically charged ones. We compare the results of the charged case with those of the neutral case with the same cosmological constant. We find that the production rate of a charged BH pair is always suppressed in comparison with that of the neutral one in both four and five dimensions, irrespective of the sign of the cosmological constant. The Euclidean action is equal to the minus of the entropy. Since the horizon area of a BH is decreased as the magnitude of its charge is increased in general, the decreasing creation rate can be understood in terms of the increasing charge. We obtain the explicit confirmation on the relation between the pair creation rate of the charged BHs and the area of horizons in both the four- and five-dimensional cases in the presence of a cosmological constant. The singularity of the domain wall universe with charged BHs, as distinct from that with neutral BHs, can be avoided.

Non-minimally coupled hybrid inflation

We discuss the hybrid inflation model where the inflaton field is nonminimally coupled to gravity. In the Jordan frame, the potential contains $ϕ^4$ term as well as terms in the original hybrid inflation model. In our model, inflation can be classified into the type (I) and the type (II). In the type (I), inflation is terminated by the tachyonic instability of the waterfall field, while in the type (II) by the violation of slow-roll conditions. In our model, the reheating takes place only at the true minimum and even in the case (II) finally the tachyonic instability occurs after the termination of inflation. For a negative nonminimal coupling, inflation takes place in the vacuum-dominated region, in the large field region, or near the local minimum/maximum. Inflation in the vacuum dominated region becomes either the type (I) or (II), resulting in blue or red spectrum of the curvature perturbations, respectively. Inflation around the local maximum can be either the type (I) or the type (II), which results in the red spectrum of the curvature perturbations, while it around the local minimum must be the type (I), which results in the blue spectrum. In the large field region, to terminate inflation, potential in the Einstein frame must be positively tilted, always resulting in the red spectrum. We then numerically solve the equations of motion to investigate the whole dynamics of inflaton and confirm that the spectrum of curvature perturbations changes from red to blue ones as scales become smaller.

Classification of cosmology with arbitrary matter in the Hořava-Lifshitz theory

In this short note, we are going to classify the cosmological evolutions in the recently proposed, nonrelativistic gravitational theory, the Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) theory. We consider the original HL theory (theory I), and the modified version obtained by an analytic continuation of parameters (theory II). We discuss the possiblilities of cosmological evolutions with arbitrary matter.

Cosmological intersecting brane solutions

The recent discovery of an explicit dynamical description of p-branes makes it possible to investigate the existence of intersection of such objects. We generalize the solutions depending on the overall transverse space coordinates and time to those which depend also on the relative transverse space and satisfy new intersection rules. We give classification of these dynamical intersecting brane solutions involving two branes, and discuss the application of these solutions to cosmology and show that these give Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological solutions. Finally, we construct the brane world models, using the (cut-)copy-paste method after compactifying the trivial spatial dimensions. We then find that interesting brane world models can be obtained from codimension-one branes and several static branes with higher codimensions. We also classify the behaviors of the brane world near the future/past singularity.

Dynamical p-branes with a cosmological constant

We present a class of dynamical solutions in a D-dimensional gravitational theory coupled to a dilaton, a form field strength, and a cosmological constant. We find that for any D due to the presence of a cosmological constant, the metric of solutions depends on a quadratic function of the brane world volume coordinates, and the transverse space cannot be Ricci flat except for the case of 1-branes. We then discuss the dynamics of 1-branes in a D-dimensional spacetime. For a positive cosmological constant, 1-brane solutions with D>4 approach the Milne universe in the far-brane region. On the other hand, for a negative cosmological constant, each 1-brane approaches the others as the time evolves from a positive value, but no brane collision occurs for D>4, since the spacetime close to the 1-branes eventually splits into the separate domains. In contrast, the D=3 case provides an example of colliding 1-branes. Finally, we discuss the dynamics of 0-branes and show that for D>2, they behave like the Milne universe after the infinite cosmic time has passed.

Dynamical solutions in the 3-Form Field Background in the Nishino-Salam-Sezgin Model

We investigate the dynamical 3-form flux compactifications and their implications for cosmology in our brane world in the six-dimensional Nishino-Salam-Sezgin model, which is usually referred to as the Salam-Sezgin model. We take the background of the 3-form field acting on the internal space and timelike dimensions without the U(1) gauge field strength. The first class of solutions we discuss is the dynamical generalization of the static solutions obtained recently. In this class, we find that the time evolution is restricted only in the azimuthal dimension of the internal space and not in the ordinary three-dimensional one, which does not give a cosmological evolution. The second class of solutions is obtained by exchanging the roles of the radial coordinate and the time coordinate from the assumptions in the first class. At the center of the internal space, there is a conical singularity which may be interpreted as our 3-brane world, but it is difficult to realize a warped structure in the direction of the ordinary 3-space. Except for the oscillating solutions, a dynamical evolution leads to expanding or contracting ordinary 3-space, depending on the choice of time direction. Furthermore, in the expanding solutions, there are decelerating and accelerating ones: In the latter solution, the evolution is sustained for a finite proper time and the scale factor of the 3-space diverges.

Scalar field in the anisotropic universe

We discuss the primordial spectrum of a massless and minimally coupled scalar field, produced during the initial anisotropic epoch before the onset of inflation. We consider two models of the anisotropic cosmology, the (planar) Kasner de Sitter solution (Bianchi I) and the Taub-NUT de Sitter solution (Bianchi IX), where the 3-space geometry is initially anisotropic, followed by the de Sitter phase due to the presence of a positive cosmological constant. We discuss the behavior of a quantized, massless and minimally coupled scalar field in the anisotropic stage. We focus on the quantization procedure and evolution in the pre-inflationary anisotropic background. The initial condition is set by the requirement that the scalar field is initially in an adiabatic state. In our case, such a vacuum state exists only for limited solutions of the anisotropic Universe, whose spacetime structure is regular in the initial times. In this paper, we call our adiabatic vacuum state the anisotropic vacuum. In the Kasner de Sitter model, for one branch of planar solutions there is an anisotropic vacuum unless $k_3\neq 0$, where $k_3$ is the comoving momentum along the third direction, while in the other branch there is no anisotropic vacuum state. In the first branch, for the moderate modes, $k_3\sim k$, where $k$ is the total comoving momentum, the scalar power spectrum has an oscillatory behavior and its direction dependence is suppressed. For the planar modes, $k_3\ll k$, in contrast, the direction dependence becomes more important, because of the amplification of the scalar amplitude during this interval of the violation of WKB approximation in the initial anisotropic stage. The qualitative behaviors in the Taub-NUT de Sitter models are very similar to the case of the first branch of the planar Kasner de Sitter model.

Self-accelerating solutions in the cascading DGP braneworld

The self-accelerating branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) five-dimensional braneworld has provided a compelling model for the current cosmic acceleration. Recent observations, however, have not favored it so much. We discuss the solutions which contain a de Sitter 3-brane in the cascading DGP braneworld model, which is a kind of higher-dimensional generalizations of the DGP model, where a $p$-dimensional brane is placed on a $(p+1)$-dimensional one and the $p$-brane action contains the $(p+1)$-dimensional induced scalar curvature term. In the simplest six-dimensional model, we derive the solutions. Our solutions can be classified into two branches, which reduce to the self-accelerating and normal solutions in the limit of the original five-dimensional DGP model. In the presence of the six-dimensional bulk gravity, the `normal' branch provides a new self-accelerating solution. The expansion rate of this new branch is generically lower than that of the original one, which may alleviate the fine-tuning problem.

Thick brane solutions

This article gives a comprehensive review on thick brane solutions and related topics. Such models have attracted much attention from many aspects since the birth of the brane world scenario. In many works, it has been usually assumed that a brane is an infinitely thin object; however in more general situations, one can no longer assume this. It is also widely considered that more fundamental theories such as string theory would have a minimal length scale. Many multidimensional field theories coupled to gravitation have exact solutions of gravitating topological defects, which can represent our brane world. The inclusion of brane thickness can realize a variety of possible brane world models. Given our understanding, the known solutions can be classified into topologically non-trivial solutions and trivial ones. The former class contains solutions of a single scalar (domain walls), multi-scalar, gauge-Higgs (vortices), Weyl gravity and so on. As an example of the latter class, we consider solutions of two interacting scalar fields. Approaches to obtain cosmological equations in the thick brane world are reviewed. Solutions with spatially extended branes (S-branes) and those with an extra time-like direction are also discussed.

Domain wall universe in the Einstein-Born-Infeld theory

In this Letter, we discuss the dynamics of a domain wall universe embedded into the charged black hole spacetime of the Einstein-Born-Infeld (EBI) theory. There are four kinds of possible spacetime structures, i.e., those with no horizon, the extremal one, those with two horizons (as the Reissner-Nordstr$\rm{\ddot o}$m black hole), and those with a single horizon (as the Schwarzshild black hole). We derive the effective cosmological equations on the wall. In contrast to the previous works, we take the contribution of the electrostatic energy on the wall into account. By examining the properties of the effective potential, we find that a bounce can always happen outside the (outer) horizon. For larger masses of the black hole, the height of the barrier between the horizon and bouncing point in the effective potential becomes smaller, leading to longer time scales of bouncing process. These results are compared with those in the previous works.

Field localization on a brane intersection in anti-de Sitter spacetime

We discuss the localization of scalar, fermion, and gauge field zero modes on a $3-$brane that resides at the intersection of two $4-$branes in six-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. This set-up has been introduced in the context of brane world models and, higher-dimensional versions of it, in string theory. In both six- and ten-dimensional cases, it has been shown that four-dimensional gravity can be reproduced at the intersection, due to the existence of a massless, localized graviton zero-mode. However, realistic scenarios require also the Standard Model to be localized on the $3-$brane. In this paper, we discuss under which conditions a higher-dimensional field theory, propagating on the above geometry, can have a zero-mode sector localized at the intersection and find that zero modes can be localized only if masses and couplings to the background curvature satisfy certain relations. We also consider the case when other 4-branes cut the bulk at some distance from the intersection and argue that, in the probe brane approximation, there is no significant effect on the localization properties at the $3-$brane. The case of bulk fermions is particularly interesting, since the properties of the geometry allow localization of chiral modes independently.

Can thick braneworlds be self-consistent?

We discuss the backreaction of a massless, minimally coupled, quantized scalar field on a thick, two-dimensional de Sitter (dS) brane as an extension of our previous work. We show that a finite brane thickness naturally regularizes the backreaction on the brane. The quantum backreaction exhibits a quadratic divergence in the thin wall limit. We also give a theoretical bound on the brane thickness, in terms of the brane self-consistency of the quantum corrected Einstein equation, namely the requirement that the size of the backreaction should be smaller than that of the background stress-energy at the center of the brane. Finally, we discuss the brane self-consistency for the case of a four-dimensional dS brane.

Linearized gravity on the de Sitter brane in the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet theory

We investigate the linearized gravity on a single de Sitter brane in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) bulk in the Einstein Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theory. We find that the Einstein gravity is recovered for a high energy brane, i.e., in the limit of the large expansion rate, $H\ell\gg 1$, where $H$ is the de Sitter expansion rate and $\ell$ is the curvature radius of the AdS bulk. We also show that, in the short distance limit $r\ll \min\{\ell,H^{-1}\}$, the Brans-Dicke gravity is obtained, whereas in the large distance limit $r\gg\max\{\ell,H^{-1}\}$, the Brans-Dicke gravity is obtained for $H\ell=O(1)$, and the Einstein gravity is recovered both for $H\ell\gg1$ and $H\ell\ll1$. In the limit $H\ell\to0$, these results smoothly match to the results known for the Minkowski brane.
