Null-controllability and control cost estimates for the heat equation on unbounded and large bounded domains

We survey recent results on the control problem for the heat equation on unbounded and large bounded domains. First we formulate new uncertainty relations, respectively spectral inequalities. Then we present an abstract control cost estimate which improves upon earlier results. It is particularly interesting when combined with the earlier mentioned spectral inequalities since it yields sharp control cost bounds in several asymptotic regimes. We also show that control problems on unbounded domains can be approximated by corresponding problems on a sequence of bounded domains forming an exhaustion. Our results apply also for the generalized heat equation associated with a Schrödinger semigroup.

Unique continuation and lifting of spectral band edges of Schrödinger operators on unbounded domains (With an Appendix by Albrecht Seelmann)

We prove and apply two theorems: First, a quantitative, scale-free unique continuation estimate for functions in a spectral subspace of a Schrödinger operator on a bounded or unbounded domain, second, a perturbation and lifting estimate for edges of the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint operator under a semi-definite perturbation. These two results are combined to obtain lower and upper Lipschitz bounds on the function parametrizing locally a chosen edge of the essential spectrum of a Schrödinger operator in dependence of a coupling constant. Analogous estimates for eigenvalues, possibly in gaps of the essential spectrum, are exhibited as well.

Discrete alloy-type models: Regularity of distributions and recent results

We consider discrete random Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2 (\mathbb{Z}^d)$ with a potential of discrete alloy-type structure. That is, the potential at lattice site $x \in \mathbb{Z}^d$ is given by a linear combination of independent identically distributed random variables, possibly with sign-changing coefficients. In a first part we show that the discrete alloy-type model is not uniformly $τ$-Hölder continuous, a frequently used condition in the literature of Anderson-type models with general random potentials. In a second part we review recent results on regularity properties of spectral data and localization properties for the discrete alloy-type model.

Multiscale unique continuation properties of eigenfunctions

Quantitative unique continuation principles for multiscale structures are an important ingredient in a number applications, e.g. random Schrödinger operators and control theory. We review recent results and announce new ones regarding quantitative unique continuation principles for partial differential equations with an underlying multiscale structure. They concern Schrödinger and second order elliptic operators. An important feature is that the estimates are scale free and with quantitative dependence on parameters. These unique continuation principles apply to functions satisfying certain `rigidity' conditions, namely that they are solutions of the corresponding elliptic equations, or projections on spectral subspaces. Carleman estimates play an important role in the proofs of these results. We also present an explicit Carleman estimate for second order elliptic operators.

Scale-free uncertainty principles and Wegner estimates for random breather potentials

We present new scale-free quantitative unique continuation principles for Schrödinger operators. They apply to linear combinations of eigenfunctions corresponding to eigenvalues below a prescribed energy, and can be formulated as an uncertainty principle for spectral projectors. This extends recent results of Rojas-Molina & Veselić, and Klein. We apply the scale-free unique continuation principle to obtain a Wegner estimate for a random Schrödinger operator of breather type. It holds for arbitrarily high energies. Schrödinger operators with random breather potentials have a non-linear dependence on random variables. We explain the challenges arising from this non-linear dependence.

Wegner estimate and localization for alloy-type models with sign-changing exponentially decaying single-site potentials

We study Schrödinger operators on $L^2 (\RR^d)$ and $\ell^2(\ZZ^d)$ with a random potential of alloy-type. The single-site potential is assumed to be exponentially decaying but not necessarily of fixed sign. In the continuum setting we require a generalized step-function shape. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. In the described situation a Wegner estimate which is polynomial in the volume of the box and linear in the size of the energy interval holds. We apply the established Wegner estimate as an ingredient for a localization proof via multiscale analysis.

Minami's estimate: beyond rank one perturbation and monotonicity

In this note we prove Minami's estimate for a class of discrete alloy-type models with a sign-changing single-site potential of finite support. We apply Minami's estimate to prove Poisson statistics for the energy level spacing. Our result is valid for random potentials which are in a certain sense sufficiently close to the standard Anderson potential (rank one perturbations coupled with i.i.d. random variables).

Localization for alloy-type models with non-monotone potentials

We consider a family of self-adjoint operators [H_ω= - Δ+ λV_ω, \quad ω\in Ω= \bigtimes_{k \in \ZZ^d} \RR,] on the Hilbert space $\ell^2 (\ZZ^d)$ or $L^2 (\RR^d)$. Here $Δ$ denotes the Laplace operator (discrete or continuous), $V_ω$ is a multiplication operator given by the function $$V_ω(x) = \sum_{k \in \ZZ^d} ω_k u(x-k) on $\ZZ^d$, or \quad V_ω(x) = \sum_{k \in \ZZ^d} ω_k U(x-k) on $\RR^d$,$$ and $λ> 0$ is a real parameter modeling the strength of the disorder present in the model. The functions $u:\ZZ^d \to \RR$ and $U:\RR^d \to \RR$ are called single-site potential. Moreover, there is a probability measure $\PP$ on $Ω$ modeling the distribution of the individual configurations $ω\in Ω$. The measure $\PP = \prod_{k \in \ZZ^d} μ$ is a product measure where $μ$ is some probability measure on $\RR$ satisfying certain regularity assumptions. The operator on $L^2 (\RR^d)$ is called alloy-type model, and its analogue on $\ell^2 (\ZZ^d)$ discrete alloy-type model. This thesis refines the methods of multiscale analysis and fractional moments in the case where the single-site potential is allowed to change its sign. In particular, we develop the fractional moment method and prove exponential localization for the discrete alloy-type model in the case where the support of $u$ is finite and $u$ has fixed sign at the boundary of its support. We also prove a Wegner estimate for the discrete alloy-type model in the case of exponentially decaying but not necessarily finitely supported single-site potentials. This Wegner estimate is applicable for a proof of localization via multiscale analysis.

Anderson localization for a class of models with a sign-indefinite single-site potential via fractional moment method

A technically convenient signature of Anderson localization is exponential decay of the fractional moments of the Green function within appropriate energy ranges. We consider a random Hamiltonian on a lattice whose randomness is generated by the sign-indefinite single-site potential, which is however sign-definite at the boundary of its support. For this class of Anderson operators we establish a finite-volume criterion which implies that above mentioned the fractional moment decay property holds. This constructive criterion is satisfied at typical perturbative regimes, e. g. at spectral boundaries which satisfy 'Lifshitz tail estimates' on the density of states and for sufficiently strong disorder. We also show how the fractional moment method facilitates the proof of exponential (spectral) localization for such random potentials.

Discrete Schrödinger operators with random alloy-type potential

We review recent results on localization for discrete alloy-type models based on the multiscale analysis and the fractional moment method, respectively. The discrete alloy-type model is a family of Schrödinger operators $H_ω= - Δ+ V_ω$ on $\ell^2 (\ZZ^d)$ where $Δ$ is the discrete Laplacian and $V_ω$ the multiplication by the function $V_ω(x) = \sum_{k \in \ZZ^d} ω_k u(x-k)$. Here $ω_k$, $k \in \ZZ^d$, are i.i.d. random variables and $u \in \ell^1 (\ZZ^d ; \RR)$ is a so-called single-site potential. Since $u$ may change sign, certain properties of $H_ω$ depend in a non-monotone way on the random parameters $ω_k$. This requires new methods at certain stages of the localization proof.

Localization via fractional moments for models on $\mathbb{Z}$ with single-site potentials of finite support

One of the fundamental results in the theory of localization for discrete Schrödinger operators with random potentials is the exponential decay of Green's function and the absence of continuous spectrum. In this paper we provide a new variant of these results for one-dimensional alloy-type potentials with finitely supported sign-changing single-site potentials using the fractional moment method.
