Spin-1/2 fermionic operators of ${\cal {N}}=4$ SYM theory and DIS from type IIB supergravity

We study deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of charged leptons from polarised spin-1/2 hadrons in terms of the gauge/gravity duality. We calculate the structure functions related to spin-1/2 fermionic operators of ${\cal {N}}=4$ SYM theory in the planar limit and at strong coupling. Specifically, we focus on the twist-3 operator which is dual to a certain dilatino mode and gives the leading contribution to the hadronic tensor. We consider the Bjorken variable within the parametric range $λ^{-1/2}_{SYM} \ll x < 1$ where the supergravity dual description holds. From dimensional reduction of type IIB supergravity on the five-sphere, we derive the interaction terms involving two dilatini and a massless vector field mode. This vector field is a linear combination of certain components of the graviton and the four-form potential. The angular integrals on the five-sphere lead to selection rules for the interactions with important consequences on the dynamics. This implies the existence of new terms contributing to the structure functions that we explicitly calculate. The leading contribution comes from the Pauli term, followed by the contributions from the new terms we found.

Deep inelastic scattering off scalar mesons in the 1/N expansion from the D3D7-brane system

Deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of charged leptons off scalar mesons in the $1/N$ expansion is studied by using the gauge/gravity duality. We focus on the D3D7-brane system and investigate the corresponding structure functions by considering both the high energy limit and the $1/N$ expansion. These limits do not commute. From the D7-brane DBI action we derive a Lagrangian at sub-leading order in the D7-brane fluctuations and obtain a number of interactions some of which become relevant for two-hadron final-state DIS. By considering first the high energy limit followed by the large $N$ one, our results fit lattice QCD data within $1.27\%$ for the first three moments of $F_2$ for the lightest pseudoscalar meson.

Towards 1/N corrections to deep inelastic scattering from the gauge/gravity duality

$1/N^2$ corrections to deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of charged leptons from glueballs at strong coupling are investigated in the framework of the gauge/gravity duality. The structure functions $F_1$ and $F_2$ (and also $F_L$) are studied at subleading order in the $1/N^2$ expansion, in terms of $q^2$ and the Bjorken parameter $x$. The relevant type IIB supergravity one-loop diagrams (which correspond to DIS with two-hadron final states) are studied in detail, while $n$-loop diagrams (corresponding to DIS with $(n+1)$-hadron final states) are briefly discussed. The $1/N^{2n}$ and $Λ^2/q^2$ dependence of the structure functions is analyzed. Within this context two very different limits are considered: one is the large $N$ limit and the other one is when the virtual photon momentum transfer $q$ is much larger than the infrared confining scale $Λ$. These limits do not commute.

Deep inelastic scattering cross sections from the gauge/string duality

Differential cross sections of deep inelastic scattering of charged leptons from hadrons are investigated by using the gauge/string duality. We consider vector mesons derived from different holographic dual models obtaining a general expression. We focus on the strongly coupled regime of dual gauge theories for different values of the Bjorken parameter. We find new predictions which are particularly interesting for differential scattering cross sections of polarized leptons scattered off polarized vector mesons. We also carry out a detailed comparison of the moments of the structure functions with lattice QCD results.

Hadron structure functions at small $x$ from string theory

Deep inelastic scattering of leptons from hadrons at small values of the Bjorken parameter $x$ is studied from superstring theory. In particular, we focus on single-flavored scalar and vector mesons in the large $N$ limit. This is studied in terms of different holographic dual models with flavor Dp-branes in type IIA and type IIB superstring theories, in the strong coupling limit of the corresponding dual gauge theories. We derive the hadronic tensor and the structure functions for scalar and polarized vector mesons. In particular, for polarized vector mesons we obtain the eight structure functions at small values of the Bjorken parameter. The main result is that we obtain new relations of the Callan-Gross type for several structure functions. These relations have similarities for all different Dp-brane models that we consider. This would suggest their universal character, and therefore, it is possible that they hold for strongly coupled QCD in the large $N$ limit.

Deep inelastic scattering structure functions of holographic spin-1 hadrons with $N_f \geq 1$

Two-point current correlation functions of the large $N$ limit of supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories at strong coupling are investigated in terms of their string theory dual models with quenched flavors. We consider non-Abelian global symmetry currents, which allow one to investigate vector mesons with $N_f > 1$. From the correlation functions we construct the deep inelastic scattering hadronic tensor of spin-one mesons, obtaining the corresponding eight structure functions for polarized vector mesons. We obtain several relations among the structure functions. Relations among some of their moments are also derived. Aspects of the sub-leading contributions in the $1/N$ and $N_f/N$ expansions are discussed. At leading order we find a universal behavior of the hadronic structure functions.

Dynamics of holographic thermalization

Dynamical evolution of thin shells composed by different kinds of degrees of freedom collapsing within asymptotically AdS spaces is explored with the aim of investigating models of holographic thermalization of strongly coupled systems. From the quantum field theory point of view this corresponds to considering different thermal quenches. We carry out a general study of the thermalization time scale using different parameters and space-time dimensions, by calculating renormalized space-like geodesic lengths and rectangular minimal area surfaces as extended probes of thermalization, which are dual to two-point functions and rectangular Wilson loops. Different kinds of degrees of freedom in the shell are described by their corresponding equations of state. We consider a scalar field, as well as relativistic matter, a pressureless massive fluid and conformal matter, which can be compared with the collapse of an AdS-Vaidya thin shell. Remarkably, for conformal matter, the thermalization time scale becomes much larger than the others. Furthermore, in each case we also investigate models where the cosmological constants of the inner and outer regions separated by the shell are different. We found that in this case only a scalar field shell collapses, and that the thermalization time scale is also much larger than the AdS-Vaidya case.

Quantum corrections to dynamical holographic thermalization: entanglement entropy and other non-local observables

We investigate the thermalization time scale in the planar limit of the SU(N) N=4 SYM plasma at strong yet finite 't Hooft coupling by considering its supergravity dual description, including the full O(alpha'^3) type IIB string theory corrections. We also discuss on the effects of the leading non-planar corrections. We use extended geometric probes in the bulk which are dual to different non-local observables in the N=4 SYM theory. This is carried out within the framework of dynamical holographic thermalization.

Plasma photoemission from string theory

Leading 't Hooft coupling corrections to the photoemission rate of the planar limit of a strongly-coupled {\cal {N}}=4 SYM plasma are investigated using the gauge/string duality. We consider the full order α'^3 type IIB string theory corrections to the supergravity action, including higher order terms with the Ramond-Ramond five-form field strength. We extend our previous results presented in arXiv:1110.0526. Photoemission rates depend on the 't Hooft coupling, and their curves suggest an interpolating behaviour from strong towards weak coupling regimes. Their slopes at zero light-like momentum give the electrical conductivity as a function of the 't Hooft coupling, in full agreement with our previous results of arXiv:1108.6306. Furthermore, we also study the effect of corrections beyond the large N limit.

Thermalization with a chemical potential from AdS spaces

The time-scale of thermalization in holographic dual models with a chemical potential in diverse number of dimensions is systematically investigated using the gauge/gravity duality. We consider a model with a thin-shell of charged dust collapsing from the boundary toward the bulk interior of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces. In the outer region there is a Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole (RNAdS-BH), while in the inner region there is an anti-de Sitter space. We consider renormalized geodesic lengths and minimal area surfaces as probes of thermalization, which in the dual quantum field theory (QFT) correspond to two-point functions and expectation values of Wilson loops, respectively. We show how the behavior of these extensive probes changes for charged black holes in comparison with Schwarzschild-AdS black holes (AdS-BH), for different values of the black hole mass and charge. The full range of values of the chemical potential over temperature ratio in the dual QFT is investigated. In all cases, the structure of the thermalization curves shares similar features with those obtained from the AdS-BH. On the other hand, there is an important difference in comparison with the AdS-BH: the thermalization times obtained from the renormalized geodesic lengths and the minimal area surfaces are larger for the RNAdS-BH, and they increase as the black hole charge increases.

Deep Inelastic Scattering from Holographic Spin-One Hadrons

We study deep inelastic scattering structure functions from hadrons using different holographic dual models which describe the strongly coupled regime of gauge theories in the large $N$ limit. Particularly, we consider scalar and vector mesons obtained from holographic descriptions with fundamental degrees of freedom, corresponding to ${\cal {N}}=2$ supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. We explicitly obtain analytic expressions for the full set of eight structure functions, i.e., $F_1$, $F_2$, $g_1$, $g_2$, $b_1$, $b_2$, $b_3$, $b_4$, arising from the standard decomposition of the hadronic tensor of spin-one hadrons. We obtain the relations $2 F_1 = F_2$ and $2 b_1 = b_2$. In addition, we find $b_1 \sim {\cal {O}}(F_1)$ as suggested by Hoodbhoy, Jaffe and Manohar for vector mesons. Also, we find new relations among some of these structure functions.

Diagnostics of plasma photoemission at strong coupling

We compute the spectrum of photons emitted by the finite-temperature large-N SU(N) ${\cal {N}}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma coupled to electromagnetism, at strong yet finite 't Hooft coupling. We work in the holographic dual description, extended by the inclusion of the full set of ${\cal{O}}(α'^3)$ type IIB string theory operators that correct the minimal supergravity action. We find that, as the t' Hooft coupling decreases, the peak of the spectrum increases, and the momentum of maximal emission shifts towards the infra-red, as expected from weak-coupling computations. The total number of emitted photons also increases as the 't Hooft coupling weakens.

Plasma conductivity at finite coupling

By taking into account the full order(α'^3) type IIB string theory corrections to the supergravity action, we compute the leading finite 't Hooft coupling order(λ^{-3/2}) corrections to the conductivity of strongly-coupled SU(N) {\cal {N}}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma in the large N limit. We find that the conductivity is enhanced by the corrections, in agreement with the trend expected from previous perturbative weak-coupling computations.

Holographic current correlators at finite coupling and scattering off a supersymmetric plasma

By studying the effect of the order(α'^3) string theory corrections to type IIB supergravity, including those corrections involving the Ramond-Ramond five-form field strength, we obtain the corrected equations of motion of an Abelian perturbation of the AdS_5-Schwarzschild black hole. We then use the gauge theory/string theory duality to examine the coupling-constant dependence of vector current correlators associated to a gauged U(1) sub-group of the global R-symmetry group of strongly-coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature. The corrections induce a set of higher-derivative operators for the U(1) gauge field, but their effect is highly suppressed. We thus find that the order(α'^3) corrections affect the vector correlators only indirectly, through the corrected metric. We apply our results to investigate scattering off a supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma at low and high energy. In the latter regime, where Deep Inelastic Scattering is expected to occur, we find an enhancement of the plasma structure functions in comparison with the infinite 't Hooft coupling result.

Towards 't Hooft parameter corrections to charge transport in strongly-coupled plasma

We study R-charge transport in a wide class of strongly-coupled supersymmetric plasmas at finite temperature with 't Hooft coupling corrections. To achieve this, we use the gauge/string duality and include the full set of order(α'^3) corrections to the supergravity backgrounds given at zeroth order by the direct product of the AdS-Schwarzschild black hole with a five-dimensional compact Einstein manifold. On general grounds, the reduction leads to a large number of higher derivative operators, which we reduce using the symmetries of the solution. We are left with a universal set of operators whose coefficients can in principle be fixed by carrying out an explicit compactification. We apply our results to the computation of the R-charge conductivity of the supersymmetric plasma at finite yet strong coupling.

Kerr-AdS black holes and non-relativistic conformal QM theories in diverse dimensions

We study the discrete light cone quantization of Kerr-AdS_{d+3} black holes with a plane wave boundary. The resulting backgrounds are conjectured to be dual of non-relativist conformal quantum mechanical theories in d spatial dimensions at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. This includes the discrete light cone quantization of Kerr-AdS_4 and Kerr-AdS_6 black holes. These are conjectured to be dual of non-relativistic conformal quantum mechanical theories in one and three spatial dimensions, respectively, which are defined on plane wave backgrounds. We also consider the case of the BTZ black hole. We calculate thermodynamic properties of these systems by using the gravity dual models. We discuss the embedding of these backgrounds in string theory and M-theory. We give general formulas for the discrete light cone quantization of Kerr-AdS black holes in higher dimensions and their thermodynamic properties.

Hagedorn transition, vortices and D0 branes: Lessons from 2+1 confining strings

We study the behaviour of Polyakov confining string in the Georgi-Glashow model in three dimensions near confining-deconfining phase transition described in hep-th/0010201. In the string language, the transition mechanism is the decay of the confining string into D0 branes (charged W bosons of the Georgi-Glashow model). In the world-sheet picture the world-lines of heavy D0 branes at finite temperature are represented as world-sheet vortices of a certain type, and the transition corresponds to the condensation of these vortices. We also show that the ``would be'' Hagedorn transition in the confining string (which is not realized in our model) corresponds to the monopole binding transition in the field theoretical language. The fact that the decay into D0 branes occurs at lower than the Hagedorn temperature is understood as the consequence of the large thickness of the confining string and finite mass of the $D0$ branes.

Supergravity duals of gauge theories from F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions

We construct supergravity solutions dual to twisted field theories that are the worldvolume theories of D4-branes wrapped on 2, 3-cycles, and NS-fivebranes on 3-cycles. We first obtain the solutions for the Romans' six-dimensional gauged supergravity theories and then up-lift them to ten dimensions. In particular, we find solutions for field configurations with either non-Abelian fields or B-fields being excited. One of these solutions, in the massless case, is up-lifted to the massless type IIA string theory. This is the first example of such a kind. The cases studied provide new examples of the AdS/CFT duality involving twisted field theories.
