Equilibrium structures of anisometric, quadrupolar particles confined to a monolayer

We investigate the structural properties of a two-dimensional system of ellipsoidal particles carrying a linear quadrupole moment in their center. These particles represent a simple model for a variety of uncharged, non-polar conjugated organic molecules. Using optimization tools based on ideas of Evolutionary Algorithms, we first examine the ground state structures as we vary the aspect ratio of the particles and the pressure. Interestingly, we find, besides the intuitively expected T-like configurations, a variety of complex structures, characterized with up to three different particle orientations. In an effort to explore the impact of thermal fluctuations, we perform constant-pressure Molecular Dynamics simulations within a range of rather low temperatures. We observe that ground state structures formed by particles with a large aspect ratio are in particular suited to withstand fluctuations up to rather high temperatures. Our comprehensive investigations allow for a deeper understanding of molecular or colloidal monolayer arrangements under the influence of a typical electrostatic interaction on a coarse-grained level.

The melting of the classical two dimensional Wigner crystal

We report an extensive Monte-Carlo study of the melting of the classical two dimensional Wigner crystal for a system of point particles interacting via the $1/r$-Coulomb potential. A hexatic phase is found in systems large enough. With the multiple histograms method and the finite size scaling theory, we show that the fluid/hexatic phase transition is weakly first order. No set of critical exponents, consistent with a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and the finite size scaling analysis for this transition, have been found.

Crystal phases of soft spheres systems in a slab geometry

We have identified the ground state configurations of soft particles (interacting via inverse power potentials) confined between two hard, impenetrable walls. To this end we have used a highly reliable optimization scheme at {\it vanishing} temperature while varying the wall separation over a representative range. Apart from the expected layered triangular and square structures (which are compatible with the three dimensional bulk fcc lattice), we have identified a cascade of highly complex intermediate structures. Taking benefit of the general scaling properties of inverse power potentials, we could identify -- for a given softness value -- one single master curve which relates the energy to the wall separation, irrespective of the density of the system. Via extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we have performed closer investigations of these intermediate structures at {\it finite} temperature: we could provide evidence to which extent these particle arrangements remain stable over a relatively large temperature range.

Mixtures of Hard Ellipsoids and Spheres: Stability of the Nematic Phase

The stability of liquid crystal phases in presence of small amount of non-mesogenic impurities is of general interest for a large spectrum of technological applications and in the theories of binary mixtures. Starting from the known phase diagram of the hard ellipsoids systems, we propose a simple model and method to explore the stability of the nematic phase in presence of small impurities represented by hard spheres. The study is performed in the isobaric ensemble with Monte Carlo simulations.

Taking one charge off a two-dimensional Wigner crystal

A planar array of identical charges at vanishing temperature forms a Wigner crystal with hexagonal symmetry. We take off one (reference) charge in a perpendicular direction, hold it fixed, and search for the ground state of the whole system. The planar projection of the reference charge should then evolve from a six-fold coordination (center of a hexagon) for small distances to a three-fold arrangement (center of a triangle), at large distances $d$ from the plane. The aim of this paper is to describe the corresponding non-trivial lattice transformation. For that purpose, two numerical methods (direct energy minimization and Monte Carlo simulations), together with an analytical treatment, are presented. Our results indicate that the $d=0$ and $d\to\infty$ limiting cases extend for finite values of $d$ from the respective starting points into two sequences of stable states, with intersecting energies at some value $d_t$; beyond this value the branches continue as metastable states.

Melting in Monolayers : Hexatic and Fluid Phases

There are strong evidences that the melting in two dimensions depends crucially on the form and range of the interaction potentials between particles. We study with Monte Carlo simulations the phase diagram and the melting of a monolayer of point-particles interacting with repulsive Inverse Power Law Interactions, $V(r)=Q^2(σ/r)^n$ where $n$ can take any real positive value ($n$-OCP monolayer). As $n$ is varied from 0 to $\infty$ (Hard Disks), including Coulomb ($n=1$) and Dipolar ($n=3$), melting occurs with different mechanisms and the overall picture permits to understand the diversity of mechanisms found experimentally or in computer simulations for 2D melting. The empirical transition curves for $n\leq 3$ and the excellent qualitative and semi-quantitative agreements with the KTHNY theory found for the melting of $n$-OCP monolayers with $n\leq 3$ are the main results of the present work.

Ewald methods for inverse power-law interactions in tridimensional and quasi-two dimensional systems

In this paper, we derive the Ewald method for inverse power-law interactions in quasi-two dimensional systems. The derivation is done by using two different analytical methods. The first uses the Parry's limit, that considers the Ewald methods for quasi-two dimensional systems as a limit of the Ewald methods for tridimensional systems, the second uses Poisson-Jacobi identities for lattice sums. Taking into account the equivalence of both derivations, we obtain a new analytical Fourier transform intregral involving incomplete gamma function. Energies of the generalized restrictive primitive model of electrolytes ($η$-RPM) and of the generalized one component plasma model ($η$-OCP) are given for the tridimensional, quasi-two dimensional and monolayers systems. Few numerical results, using Monte-Carlo simulations, for $η$-RPM and $η$-OCP monolayers systems are reported.

The Metropolis Monte Carlo Finite Element Algorithm for Electrostatic Interactions

The Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm with the Finite Element method applied to compute electrostatic interaction energy between charge densities is described in this work. By using the Finite Element method to integrate numerically the Poisson's equation, it is shown that the computing time to obtain the acceptance probability of an elementary trial move does not, in principle, depend on the number of charged particles present in the system.

The Chiral Dipolar Hard Sphere Model

A simple molecular model of chiral molecules is presented in this paper : the chiral dipolar hard sphere model. The discriminatory interaction between enantiomers is represented by electrostatic (or magnetic) dipoles-dipoles interactions : short ranged steric repulsion are represented by hard sphere potential and, in each molecule, two point dipoles are located inside the sphere. The model is described in detail and some of its elementary properties are given ; in particular, it is shown that the that the knowledge of only three multipole spherical components (namely : $Q_{10}$, $Q_{21}$ and $Q_{22}$) allows to compute all multipole spherical components of the model. Despite, the simplicity of the model, it is shown also that the energy landscape of the interaction between two enantiomers is quite rich, this renders systems of chiral dipolar hard sphere very interesting and complicated to study. Few preliminary Monte Carlo simulation results are also reported in the paper. Last, but not least, this paper is dedicated to Jean-Jacques Weis.

Bond Orientational Order Parameters in the Crystalline Phases of the Classical Yukawa-Wigner Bilayers

We present a study of the structural properties of the crystalline phases for a planar bilayer of particles interacting via repulsive Yukawa potentials in the weak screening region. The study is done with Monte Carlo computations and the long ranged contributions to energy are taken into account with the Ewald method for quasi-two dimensional systems. Two first order phase transitions (fluid-solid and solid-solid) and one second order transition (solid-solid) are found when the surface density is varied at constant temperature. A particular attention is pay to the characteristics of the crystalline phases by the analysis of bond orientational order parameters and center-to-center correlations functions.

Structure and thermodynamics of a ferrofluid bilayer

We present extensive Monte Carlo simulations for the thermodynamic and structural properties of a planar bilayer of dipolar hard spheres for a wide range of densities, dipole moments and layer separations. Expressions for the stress and pressure tensors of the bilayer system are derived. For all thermodynamic states considered the interlayer energy is shown to be attractive and much smaller than the intralayer contribution to the energy. It vanishes at layer separations of the order of two hard sphere diameters. The normal pressure is negative and decays as a function of layer separation $h$ as $-1/h^5$. Intralayer and interlayer pair distribution functions and angular correlation functions are presented. Despite the weak interlayer energy strong positional and orientational correlations exist between particles in the two layers.

Ewald sums for Yukawa potentials in quasi-two-dimensional systems

In this note, we derive Ewald sums for Yukawa potential for three dimensional systems with two dimensional periodicity. This sums are derived from the Ewald sums for Yukawa potentials with three dimensional periodicity [G. Salin and J.-M. Caillol, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 113}, 10459 (2000)] by using the method proposed by Parry for the Coulomb interactions [D.E. Parry, Surf. Sci. {\bf 49}, 433 (1975); {\bf 54}, 195 (1976)].

Holonomic constraints : an analytical result

Systems subjected to holonomic constraints follow quite complicated dynamics that could not be described easily with Hamiltonian or Lagrangian dynamics. The influence of holonomic constraints in equations of motions is taken into account by using Lagrange multipliers. Finding the value of the Lagrange multipliers allows to compute the forces induced by the constraints and therefore, to integrate the equations of motions of the system. Computing analytically the Lagrange multipliers for a constrained system may be a difficult task that is depending on the complexity of systems. For complex systems, it is most of the time impossible to achieve. In computer simulations, some algorithms using iterative procedures estimate numerically Lagrange multipliers or constraint forces by correcting the unconstrained trajectory. In this work, we provide an analytical computation of the Lagrange multipliers for a set of linear holonomic constraints with an arbitrary number of bonds of constant length. In the appendix of the paper, one would find explicit formulas for Lagrange multipliers for systems having 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bonds of constant length, linearly connected.

Yukawa potentials in systems with partial periodic boundary conditions I : Ewald sums for quasi-two dimensional systems

Yukawa potentials are often used as effective potentials for systems as colloids, plasmas, etc. When the Debye screening length is large, the Yukawa potential tends to the non-screened Coulomb potential ; in this small screening limit, or Coulomb limit, the potential is long ranged. As it is well known in computer simulation, a simple truncation of the long ranged potential and the minimum image convention are insufficient to obtain accurate numerical data on systems. The Ewald method for bulk systems, i.e. with periodic boundary conditions in all three directions of the space, has already been derived for Yukawa potential [cf. Y., Rosenfeld, {\it Mol. Phys.}, \bm{88}, 1357, (1996) and G., Salin and J.-M., Caillol, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, \bm{113}, 10459, (2000)], but for systems with partial periodic boundary conditions, the Ewald sums have only recently been obtained [M., Mazars, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, {\bf 126}, 056101 (2007)]. In this paper, we provide a closed derivation of the Ewald sums for Yukawa potentials in systems with periodic boundary conditions in only two directions and for any value of the Debye length. A special attention is paid to the Coulomb limit and its relation with the electroneutrality of systems.

Yukawa potentials in systems with partial periodic boundary conditions II : Lekner sums for quasi-two dimensional systems

Yukawa potentials may be long ranged when the Debye screening length is large. In computer simulations, such long ranged potentials have to be taken into account with convenient algorithms to avoid systematic bias in the sampling of the phase space. Recently, we have provided Ewald sums for quasi-two dimensional systems with Yukawa interaction potentials [M. Mazars, {\it J. Chem. Phys.}, {\bf 126}, 056101 (2007) and M. Mazars, {\it Mol. Phys.}, Paper I]. Sometimes, Lekner sums are used as an alternative to Ewald sums for Coulomb systems. In the present work, we derive the Lekner sums for quasi-two dimensional systems with Yukawa interaction potentials and we give some numerical tests for pratical implementations. The main result of this paper is to outline that Lekner sums cannot be considered as an alternative to Ewald sums for Yukawa potentials. As a conclusion to this work : Lekner sums should not be used for quasi-two dimensional systems with Yukawa interaction potentials.
