Probing scalar dark matter oscillations with neutrino oscillations

If ultra-light dark matter (ULDM) exists and couples to neutrinos, it can be discovered via time-periodic variations in the neutrino mass and mixing parameters. We analyze the current bounds on such a scenario and establish the sensitivity expected for both time-averaged and time-resolved modulations in future neutrino oscillation experiments. We place a special emphasis in our analysis on time modulations of the CP violating mixing phase. We illustrate with a toy model the case where the leading modulation effect can be CP violating while the effect on CP conserving parameters is suppressed. We show a unique imprint that a time averaged CP violating modulation of ULDM can leave in neutrino oscillations, while direct CP asymmetries vanish.

$CP$ violation from $τ$, $t$ and $b$ dimension-6 Yukawa couplings -- interplay of baryogenesis, EDM and Higgs physics

We explore the implications of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) with dimension-six terms involving the Higgs boson and third-generation fermion fields on the rate of Higgs boson production and decay into fermions, on the electric dipole moments (EDMs) of the electron, and on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We study the consequences of allowing these additional terms for each flavor separately and for combinations of two flavors. We find that a complex $τ$ Yukawa coupling can account for the observed baryon asymmetry $Y_B^{\rm obs}$ within current LHC and EDM bounds. A complex $b$ ($t$) Yukawa coupling can account for $4\%$ ($2\%$) of $Y_B^{\rm obs}$, whereas a combination of the two can reach $12\%$. Combining $τ$ with either $t$ or $b$ enlarges the viable parameter space owing to cancellations in the EDM and in either Higgs production times decay or the total Higgs width, respectively. Interestingly, in such a scenario there exists a region in parameter space where the SMEFT contributions to the electron EDM cancel and collider signal strengths are precisely SM-like, while producing sufficient baryon asymmetry. Measuring $CP$ violation in Higgs decays to $τ$ leptons is the smoking gun for this scenario.

Implications of the upper bound on $\boldsymbol{h\toμ^+μ^-}$ on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe

The upper bounds from the ATLAS and CMS experiments on the decay rate of the Higgs boson to two muons provide the strongest constraint on an imaginary part of the muon Yukawa coupling. This bound is more than an order of magnitude stronger than bounds from $\mathcal{CP}$-violating observables, specifically the electric dipole moment of the electron. It excludes a scenario $-$ which had been viable prior to these measurements $-$ that a complex muon Yukawa coupling is the dominant source of the baryon asymmetry. Even with this bound, the muon source can still contribute ${\cal O}(16\%)$ of the asymmetry.

Probing the Type I Seesaw Mechanism with Displaced Vertices at the LHC

The observation of Higgs decays into heavy neutrinos would be strong evidence for new physics associated to neutrino masses. In this work we propose a search for such decays within the Type I seesaw model in the few-GeV mass range via displaced vertices. Using 300 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, at 13 TeV, we explore the region of parameter space where such decays are measurable. We show that, after imposing pseudorapidity cuts, there still exists a region where the number of events is larger than $\mathcal{O}(10)$. We also find that conventional triggers can greatly limit the sensitivity of our signal, so we display several relevant kinematical distributions which might aid in the optimization of a dedicated trigger selection.

CP violation Beyond the MSSM: Baryogenesis and Electric Dipole Moments

We study electroweak baryogenesis and electric dipole moments in the presence of the two leading-order, non-renormalizable operators in the Higgs sector of the MSSM. Significant qualitative and quantitative differences from MSSM baryogenesis arise due to the presence of new CP-violating phases and to the relaxation of constraints on the supersymmetric spectrum (in particular, both stops can be light). We find: (1) spontaneous baryogenesis, driven by a change in the phase of the Higgs vevs across the bubble wall, becomes possible; (2) the top and stop CP-violating sources can become effective; (3) baryogenesis is viable in larger parts of parameter space, alleviating the well-known fine-tuning associated with MSSM baryogenesis. Nevertheless, electric dipole moments should be measured if experimental sensitivities are improved by about one order of magnitude.

Neutrinos in the simplest little Higgs scenario and TeV leptogenesis

The little Higgs scenario may provide an interesting framework to accommodate TeV scale leptogenesis because a TeV Majorana mass of the right-handed neutrino that we employ for the latter may find a natural place near the ultraviolet cutoff of the former. In this work we study how a light neutrino spectrum, generated radiatively, and TeV scale leptogenesis can be embedded in the simplest little Higgs framework. Alternatively, we highlight how the neutrino Yukawa textures of the latter are constrained.

Leptogenesis with four gauge singlets

We consider a generic type of leptogenesis model which can successfully produce the correct value of the observed baryon number to entropy ratio. The main feature of this model is that it is a simple TeV scale model, a scale accessible in near future machines, with a minimal particle content. Both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric versions of the model are feasible. This model also gives left-handed neutrino masses compatible with all current data from direct and indirect neutrino experiments.

Neutrino masses and mixings in the MSSM with soft bilinear $R_p$ violation

We analyse a simple RPV extension of the MSSM, with bilinear R-parity violation in the soft terms and vevs, but not between the terms in the superpotential. The model gives two massive neutrinos, and can fit all constraints from neutrino data. We show analytically how to compute the lepton number violating Lagrangian parameters from neutrino masses and mixing angles. Conversely, we numerically vary the bilinear couplings as input parameters to determine the allowed ranges that are consistent with neutrino data. We briefly comment on the implications of our bounds for low energy LFV processes.

Mixing Effects in the Finite-Temperature Effective Potential of the MSSM with a Light Stop

We incorporate the effects of mixing arising from the trilinear terms in the MSSM potential to the effective three dimensional theory for the MSSM at high temperature in the limit of large $m_{A}$. There are relevant one-loop effects that modify the 3D parameters of the effective theory. We calculate the two-loop effective potential of the 3D theory for the Higgs and the right handed stop to analyse the possible phase transitions and to determine the precise region in the $m_{h}$-$m_{\tilde{t}_{2}}$ plane for which the sphaleron constraint for preservation of the baryon asymmetry is satisfied. There is an upper bound on the value of the mixing parameter coming from stop searches. We also compare with previous results obtained using 4D calculations of the effective potential for the regime of large $m_{Q}$. A two-stage phase transition persists for a small range of values of $m_{\tilde{t}_{2}}$ for given values of the mixing parameter and $\tanβ$. This can further constrain the allowed region of parameter space. Electroweak baryogenesis requires a value of $m_{\tilde{t}_{2}}\lsi 170$ and $m_{h} \lsi 105$ GeV for $m_{Q}=300$ GeV.

The Electroweak Phase Transition in the MSSM

The construction of an effective 3D theory at high temperatures for the MSSM as a model of electroweak baryogenesis is discussed. The analysis for a single light scalar field shows, that given the experimental constraints, there is no value of the Higgs mass for which a sufficiently first-order phase transition is obtained. A precise determination of the 3D parameters of the effective theory for the case of a light right-handed stop allows us to obtain an upper bound on the masses of the lightest Higgs and right-handed stop using the two-loop effective potential. A two-stage phase transition persists for a small range of values of $m_{\tilde{t}_{R}}$.

The Two-Loop Finite-Temperature Effective Potential of the MSSM and Baryogenesis

We construct an effective three dimensional theory for the MSSM at high temperatures in the limit of large-$m_{A}$. We analyse the two-loop effective potential of the 3D theory for the case of a light right handed stop to determine the precise region in the $m_{h}$-$m_{\tilde{t}_{R}}$ plane for which the sphaleron constraint for preservation of the baryon asymmetry is satisfied. We also compare with results previously obtained usind 3D and 4D calculations of the effective potential. A two-stage phase transition still persists for a small range of values of $m_{\tilde{t}_{R}}$. The allowed region requires a value of $m_{\tilde{t}_{R}} \lsi m_{t}$ and $m_{h} \lsi 100$ (110) GeV for $m_{Q} = 300$ GeV (1 TeV).

High Temperature Dimensional Reduction of the MSSM and other Multi-Scalar Models

Using dimensional reduction we construct an effective 3D theory of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at finite temperature. The final effective theory is obtained after three successive stages of integration out of massive particles. We obtain the full 1-loop relation between the couplings of the reduced theory and the underlying 4D couplings and masses. The procedure is also applied to a general two Higgs doublet model and the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

The Electroweak Phase Transition in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

Using dimensional reduction we construct an effective 3D theory of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model at finite temperature. The final effective theory is obtained after three successive stages of integration out of massive particles. We obtain the full 1-loop relation between the couplings of the reduced theory and the underlying 4D couplings and masses. The procedure is also applied to a general two Higgs doublet model and the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We analyze the effective 3D theory constructed for the MSSM to determine the regions of parameter space for which electroweak baryogenesis is possible. We find that the inclusion of all supersymmetric scalars has the effect of enhancing the strength of the phase transition. The requirement of a very light stop is not necessary for baryogenesis. The phase transition is sufficiently first order if the lightest Higgs mass, $m_{h} ~< 70$ GeV. We note the existence of potentially interesting regions of parameter space for which existing analysis techniques are inadequate to decide the question.
