Full flexibility of isometric immersions of metrics with low Hölder regularity in Poznyak theorem's dimension

A classical result by Poznyak asserts that any smooth $2$-dimensional Riemannian metric $g$, posed on the closure of a simply connected domain $ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2$, has a smooth isometric immersion into $\mathbb{R}^4$. Using techniques of convex integration, we prove that for any $2$-dimensional $g\in\mathcal{C}^{r,β}$, an isometric immersion of regularity $\mathcal{C}^{1,α}(\barω,\mathbb{R}^4)$ for any $α<\min\{\frac{r+β}{2},1\}$, may be found arbitrarily close to any short immersion. The fact that this result's regularity reaches $\mathcal{C}^{1,1-}$ for $g\in \mathcal{C}^2$, which is referred to as "full flexibility", should be contrasted with: (i) the regularity $\mathcal{C}^{1,1/3-}$ achieved by Cao, Hirsch and Inauen for isometric immersions into $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ and the lack of flexibility (rigidity) of such isometric immersions with regularity $\mathcal{C}^{1, 2/3+}$ proved by Borisov and then by Conti, de Lellis and Szekelyhidi; (ii) the regularity $\mathcal{C}^{1,1-}$ obtained byt Källen for isometric immersions into higher codimensional space $\mathbb{R}^{8}$; and (iii) the regularity $\mathcal{C}^{1,\frac{1}{1+d(d+1)/k}-}$ proved by the author in the general case of $d$-dimensional metrics and $(d+k)$-dimensional immersions for the closely related Monge-Ampère system.

On asymptotic expansions for the fractional infinity Laplacian

We propose two asymptotic expansions of two interrelated integral-type averages, in the context of the fractional $\infty$-Laplacian $Δ_\infty^s$ for $s\in (\frac{1}{2},1)$. This operator has been introduced and first studied in [Bjorland, C., Caffarelli, L. and Figalli, A., \textsl{Nonlocal Tug-of-War and the inifnity fractional Laplacian}, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., \textbf{65}, pp. 337--380, (2012)]. Our expansions are parametrised by the radius of the removed singularity $ε$, and allow for the identification of $Δ_\infty^sϕ(x)$ as the $ε^{2s}$-order coefficient of the deviation of the $ε$-average from the value $ϕ(x)$, in the limit $ε\to 0+$. The averages are well posed for functions $ϕ$ that are only Borel regular and bounded.

A Course on Tug-of-War Games with Random Noise

This is a preprint of Chapter 2 in the following work: Marta Lewicka, A Course on Tug-of-War Games with Random Noise, 2020, Springer, reproduced with permission of Springer Nature Switzerland AG. We present the basic relation between the linear potential theory and random walks. This fundamental connection, developed by Ito, Doob, Levy and others, relies on the observation that harmonic functions and martingales share a common cancellation property, expressed via mean value properties. It turns out that, with appropriate modifications, a similar observation and approach can be applied also in the nonlinear case, which is of main interest in our Course Notes. Thus, the present Chapter serves as a stepping stone towards gaining familiarity with more complex nonlinear constructions. After recalling the equivalent defining properties of harmonic functions, we introduce the ball walk. This is an infinite horizon discrete process, in which at each step the particle, initially placed at some point $x_0$ in the open, bounded domain $\mathcal{D}\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, is randomly advanced to a new position, uniformly distributed within the following open ball: centered at the current placement, and with radius equal to the minimum of the parameter $ε$ and the distance from the boundary $\partial\mathcal{D}$. With probability one, such process accumulates on $\partial\mathcal{D}$ and $u^ε(x_0)$ is then defined as the expected value of the given boundary data $F$ at the process limiting position. Each function $u^ε$ is harmonic, and if $\partial\mathcal{D}$ is regular, then each $u^ε$ coincides with the unique harmonic extension of $F$ in $\mathcal{D}$. One sufficient condition for regularity is the exterior cone condition.

The metric-restricted inverse design problem

We study a class of design problems in solid mechanics, leading to a variation on the classical question of equi-dimensional embeddability of Riemannian manifolds. In this general new context, we derive a necessary and sufficient existence condition, given through a system of total differential equations, and discuss its integrability. In the classical context, the same approach yields conditions of immersibility of a given metric in terms of the Riemann curvature tensor. In the present situation, the equations do not close in a straightforward manner, and successive differentiation of the compatibility conditions leads to a new algebraic description of integrability. We also recast the problem in a variational setting and analyze the infimum of the appropriate incompatibility energy, resembling the "non-Euclidean elasticity." We then derive a $Γ$-convergence result for the dimension reduction from $3$d to $2$d in the Kirchhoff energy scaling regime.

A rigorous justification of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations with geometric effects

We derive the 1D isentropic Euler and Navier-Stokes equations describing the motion of a gas through a nozzle of variable cross section as the asymptotic limit of the 3D isentropic Navier-Stokes system in a cylinder, the diameter of which tends to zero. Our method is based on the relative energy inequality satisfied by any weak solution of the 3D Navier-Stokes system and a variant of Korn-Poincare's inequality on thin channels that may be of independent interest.

Discrete approximations to the double-obstacle prtoblem, and optimal stopping of tug-of-war games

We study the double-obstacle problem for the p-Laplace operator, p 2 [2;1). We prove that for Lipschitz boundary data and Lipschitz obstacles, viscosity solutions are unique and coincide with variational solutions. They are also uniform limits of solutions to discrete min-max problems that can be interpreted as the dynamic programming principle for appropriate tug-ofwar games with noise. In these games, both players in addition to choosing their strategies, are also allowed to choose stopping times. The solutions to the double-obstacle problems are limits of values of these games, when the step-size controlling the single shift in the token's position, converges to 0. We propose a numerical scheme based on this observation and show how it works for some examples of obstacles and boundary data.

On the optimal constants in Korn's and geometric rigidity estimates, in bounded and unbounded domains, under Neumann boundary conditions

We are concerned with the optimal constants: in the Korn inequality under tangential boundary conditions on bounded sets $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, and in the geometric rigidity estimate on the whole $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove that the latter constant equals $\sqrt{2}$, and we discuss the relation of the former constants with the optimal Korn's constants under Dirichlet boundary conditions, and in the whole $\mathbb{R}^n$, which are well known to equal $\sqrt{2}$. We also discuss the attainability of these constants and the structure of deformations/displacement fields in the optimal sets.

Plates with incompatible prestrain of higher order

We study the effective elastic behaviour of the incompatibly prestrained thin plates, characterized by a Riemann metric $G$ on the reference configuration. We assume that the prestrain is "weak", i.e. it induces scaling of the incompatible elastic energy $E^h$ of order less than $h^2$ in terms of the plate's thickness $h$. We essentially prove two results. First, we establish the $Γ$-limit of the scaled energies $h^{-4}E^h$ and show that it consists of a von Kármán-like energy, given in terms of the first order infinitesimal isometries and of the admissible strains on the surface isometrically immersing $G_{2\times 2}$ (i.e. the prestrain metric on the midplate) in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Second, we prove that in the scaling regime $E^h\sim h^β$ with $β>2$, there is no other limiting theory: if $\inf h^{-2} E^h \to 0$ then $\inf E^h\leq Ch^4$, and if $\inf h^{-4}E^h\to 0$ then $G$ is realizable and hence $\min E^h = 0$ for every $h$.

The obstacle problem for the $p$-laplacian via optimal stopping of Tug-of-War games

We present a probabilistic approach to the obstacle problem for for the $p$-Laplace operator. The solutions are approximated by running processes determined by tug-of-war games plus noise, and letting the step size go to zero, not unlike the case when Brownian motion is approximated by random walks. Rather than stopping the process when the boundary is reached, the value function is obtained by maximizing over all possible stopping times that are smaller than the exit time of the domain.

Models for elastic shells with incompatible strains

The three-dimensional shapes of thin lamina such as leaves, flowers, feathers, wings etc, are driven by the differential strain induced by the relative growth. The growth takes place through variations in the Riemannian metric, given on the thin sheet as a function of location in the central plane and also across its thickness. The shape is then a consequence of elastic energy minimization on the frustrated geometrical object. Here we provide a rigorous derivation of the asymptotic theories for shapes of residually strained thin lamina with nontrivial curvatures, i.e. growing elastic shells in both the weakly and strongly curved regimes, generalizing earlier results for the growth of nominally flat plates. The different theories are distinguished by the scaling of the mid-surface curvature relative to the inverse thickness and growth strain, and also allow us to generalize the classical Föppl-von Kármán energy to theories of prestrained shallow shells.

On the variational limits of lattice energies on prestrained elastic bodies

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete elastic energies in presence of the prestrain metric $G$, assigned on the continuum reference configuration $Ω$. When the mesh size of the discrete lattice in $Ω$ goes to zero, we obtain the variational bounds on the limiting (in the sense of $Γ$-limit) energy. In case of the nearest-neighbour and next-to-nearest-neibghour interactions, we derive a precise asymptotic formula, and compare it with the non-Euclidean model energy relative to $G$.

Plates with incompatible prestrain

We study the effective elastic behavior of incompatibly prestrained plates, where the prestrain is independent of thickness as well as uniform through the thickness. We model such plates as three-dimensional elastic bodies with a prescribed pointwise stress-free state characterized by a Riemannian metric $G$ with the above properties, and seek the limiting behavior as the thickness goes to zero. Our results extand the prior analysis in M. Lewicka, M. R. Pakzad ESAIM Control Optim. Calc. Var. 17 (2011), no. 4. We first establish that the $Γ$-limit is a Kirchhoff type bending. Further, we show that the minimum energy configuration contains non-trivial Kirchhoff type bending -- i.e., the scaling of the three-dimensional energy is of the order of the cube of the plate thickness -- if and only if the Riemann curvatures $R^3_{112}, R^3_{221}$ and $ R_{1212}$ of $G$ do not identically vanish. We demonstrate through examples, the existence of a new regime where the three above curvatures of $G$ vanish (while the mid-plane of the plate may or may not be flat), but the limiting configuration still has energy that is of the order of Föppl - von Kármán plates. Finally, we apply these results to a model of nematic glass, including a characterization of the condition when the metric is immersible, for $G=\mbox{Id}_3 +γ\vec n\otimes \vec n$ given in terms of the inhomogeneous unit director field distribution $\vec n\in\mathbb{R}^3$.

The Monge-Ampere constrained elastic theories of shallow shells

Motivated by the degree of smoothness of constrained embeddings of surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and by the recent applications to the elasticity of shallow shells, we rigorously derive the $Γ$-limit of 3-dimensional nonlinear elastic energy of a shallow shell of thickness $h$, where the depth of the shell scales like $h^α$ and the applied forces scale like $h^{α+2}$, in the limit when $h\to 0$. The main analytical ingredients are two independent results: a theorem on approximation of $W^{2,2}$ solutions of the Monge-Ampère equation by smooth solutions, and a theorem on the matching (in other words, continuation) of second order isometries to exact isometries.

A local existence result for system of viscoelasticity with physical viscosity

We prove the local in time existence of the classical solutions to the system of equations of isothermal viscoelasticity with clamped boundary conditions. We deal with a general form of viscous stress tensor $\mathcal{Z}(F,\dot F)$, assuming a Korn-type condition on its derivative $D_{\dot F}\mathcal{Z}(F, \dot F)$. This condition is compatible with the balance of angular momentum, frame invariance and the Claussius-Duhem inequality. We give examples of linear and nonlinear (in $\dot F$) tensors $\mathcal{Z}$ satisfying these required conditions.

A stability result for the Stokes-Boussinesq equations in infinite 3d channels

We consider the Stokes-Boussinesq (and the stationary Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq) equations in a slanted, i.e. not aligned with the gravity's direction, 3d channel and with an arbitrary Rayleigh number. For the front-like initial data and under the no-slip boundary condition for the flow and no-flux boundary condition for the reactant temperature, we derive uniform estimates on the burning rate and the flow velocity, which can be interpreted as stability results for the laminar front.

Infinitesimal isometries on developable surfaces and asymptotic theories for thin developable shells

We perform a detailed analysis of first order Sobolev-regular infinitesimal isometries on developable surfaces without affine regions. We prove that given enough regularity of the surface, any first order infinitesimal isometry can be matched to an infinitesimal isometry of an arbitrarily high order. We discuss the implications of this result for the elasticity of thin developable shells.

The uniform Korn - Poincaré inequality in thin domains

We study the Korn-Poincaré inequality: \|u\|_{W^{1,2}(S^h)} < C_h \|D(u)\|_{L^2(S^h)}, in domains S^h that are shells of small thickness of order h, around an arbitrary smooth and closed hypersurface S in R^n. By D(u) we denote the symmetric part of the gradient \nabla u, and we assume the tangential boundary conditions: u\vec n^h = 0 on \partial S^h. We prove that C_h remains uniformly bounded as h tends to 0, for vector fields u in any family of cones (with angle <π/2, uniform in h) around the orthogonal complement of extensions of Killing vector fields on S. We also show that this condition is optimal, as in turn every Killing field admits a family of extensions u^h, for which the ratio: \|u^h\|_{W^{1,2}(S^h)} / \|D(u^h)\|_{L^2(S^h)} blows up as h tends to 0, even if the domains S^h are not rotationally symmetric.

Existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles

We investigate existence and stability of viscoelastic shock profiles for a class of planar models including the incompressible shear case studied by Antman and Malek-Madani. We establish that the resulting equations fall into the class of symmetrizable hyperbolic--parabolic systems, hence spectral stability implies linearized and nonlinear stability with sharp rates of decay. The new contributions are treatment of the compressible case, formulation of a rigorous nonlinear stability theory, including verification of stability of small-amplitude Lax shocks, and the systematic incorporation in our investigations of numerical Evans function computations determining stability of large-amplitude and or nonclassical type shock profiles.

The von Karman equations for plates with residual strain

We provide a derivation of the Foppl-von Karman equations for the shape of and stresses in an elastic plate with residual strains. These might arise from a range of causes: inhomogeneous growth, plastic deformation, swelling or shrinkage driven by solvent absorption. Our analysis gives rigorous bounds on the convergence of the three dimensional equations of elasticity to the low-dimensional description embodied in the plate-like description of laminae and thus justifies a recent formulation of the problem to the shape of growing leaves. It also formalizes a procedure that can be used to derive other low-dimensional descriptions of active materials.

On the existence of traveling waves in the 3D Boussinesq system

We extend earlier work on traveling waves in premixed flames in a gravitationally stratified medium, subject to the Boussinesq approximation. For three-dimensional channels not aligned with the gravity direction and under the Dirichlet boundary conditions in the fluid velocity, it is shown that a non-planar traveling wave, corresponding to a non-zero reaction, exists, under an explicit condition relating the geometry of the crossection of the channel to the magnitude of the Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers, or when the advection term in the flow equations is neglected.
