On the Complexity of the Cogrowth Sequence

Given a finitely generated group with generating set $S$, we study the \emph{cogrowth} sequence, which is the number of words of length $n$ over the alphabet $S$ that are equal to one. This is related to the probability of return for walks in a Cayley graph with steps from $S$. We prove that the cogrowth sequence is not $P$-recursive when~$G$ is an amenable group of superpolynomial growth, answering a question of Garrabant and Pak.

Some families of trees arising in permutation analysis

We extend classical results on simple varieties of trees (asymptotic enumeration, average behavior of tree parameters) to trees counted by their number of leaves. Motivated by genome comparison of related species, we then apply these results to strong interval trees with a restriction on the arity of prime nodes. Doing so, we describe a filtration of the set of permutations based on their strong interval trees. This filtration is also studied from a purely analytical point of view, thus illustrating the convergence of analytic series towards a non-analytic limit at the level of the asymptotic behavior of their coefficients.

A Baxter class of a different kind, and other bijective results using tableau sequences ending with a row shape

Tableau sequences of bounded height have been central to the analysis of k-noncrossing set partitions and matchings. We show here that familes of sequences that end with a row shape are particularly compelling and lead to some interesting connections. First, we prove that hesitating tableaux of height at most two ending with a row shape are counted by Baxter numbers. This permits us to define three new Baxter classes which, remarkably, do not obviously possess the antipodal symmetry of other known Baxter classes. We then conjecture that oscillating tableau of height bounded by k ending in a row are in bijection with Young tableaux of bounded height 2k. We prove this conjecture for k at most eight by a generating function analysis. Many of our proofs are analytic in nature, so there are intriguing combinatorial bijections to be found.

Regularity in Weighted Graphs: A Symmetric Function Approach

In this note we consider $k$-regular multigraphs, where the possible edge multiplicities are controlled. These structures are considered in a question recently posed by Brendan McKay. We express the generating functions using the scalar product of symmetric functions, and consequently give conditions on when the classes are D-finite. We appeal to symmetric species results of Mendez to write the expressions in a systematic way.

A generating tree approach to k-nonnesting partitions and permutations

We describe a generating tree approach to the enumeration and exhaustive generation of k-nonnesting set partitions and permutations. Unlike previous work in the literature using the connections of these objects to Young tableaux and restricted lattice walks, our approach deals directly with partition and permutation diagrams. We provide explicit functional equations for the generating functions, with k as a parameter.

Asymptotic lattice path enumeration using diagonals

This work presents new asymptotic formulas for family of walks in Weyl chambers. The models studied here are defined by step sets which exhibit many symmetries and are restricted to the first orthant. The resulting formulas are very straightforward: the exponential growth of each model is given by the number of steps, while the sub-exponential growth depends only on the dimension of the underlying lattice and the number of steps moving forward in each coordinate. These expressions are derived by analyzing the singular variety of a multivariate rational function whose diagonal counts the lattice paths in question. Additionally, we show how to compute subdominant growth for these models, and how to determine first order asymptotics for excursions.

Average-case analysis of perfect sorting by reversals (Journal Version)

Perfect sorting by reversals, a problem originating in computational genomics, is the process of sorting a signed permutation to either the identity or to the reversed identity permutation, by a sequence of reversals that do not break any common interval. Bérard et al. (2007) make use of strong interval trees to describe an algorithm for sorting signed permutations by reversals. Combinatorial properties of this family of trees are essential to the algorithm analysis. Here, we use the expected value of certain tree parameters to prove that the average run-time of the algorithm is at worst, polynomial, and additionally, for sufficiently long permutations, the sorting algorithm runs in polynomial time with probability one. Furthermore, our analysis of the subclass of commuting scenarios yields precise results on the average length of a reversal, and the average number of reversals.

Effective Scalar Products for D-finite Symmetric Functions

Many combinatorial generating functions can be expressed as combinations of symmetric functions, or extracted as sub-series and specializations from such combinations. Gessel has outlined a large class of symmetric functions for which the resulting generating functions are D-finite. We extend Gessel's work by providing algorithms that compute differential equations these generating functions satisfy in the case they are given as a scalar product of symmetric functions in Gessel's class. Examples of applications to k-regular graphs and Young tableaux with repeated entries are given. Asymptotic estimates are a natural application of our method, which we illustrate on the same model of Young tableaux. We also derive a seemingly new formula for the Kronecker product of the sum of Schur functions with itself.

Set partitions with no m-nesting

A partition on [n] has an m-nesting if there exists i_1 < i_2 < ... < i_m < j_m < j_{m-1} < ... < j_1, where i_l and j_l are in the same block for all 1 <= l <= m. We use generating trees to construct the class of partitions with no m-nesting and determine functional equations satisfied by the associated generating functions. We use algebraic kernel method together with a linear operator to describe a coefficient extraction process. This gives rise to enumerative data, and illustrates the increasing complexity of the coefficient formulas as m increases.

Two Non-holonomic Lattice Walks in the Quarter Plane

We present two classes of random walks restricted to the quarter plane whose generating function is not holonomic. The non-holonomy is established using the iterated kernel method, a recent variant of the kernel method. This adds evidence to a recent conjecture on combinatorial properties of walks with holonomic generating functions. The method also yields an asymptotic expression for the number of walks of length n.
