Flexible Time and Ether in One-dimensional Cellular Automata

Flexible Time is a new formalism for calculations about one-dimensional cellular automata. It unifies the states of a finite number of cells into a single object, even if they occur at different times. This gives greater flexibility to handle the structures that occur in the development of a cellular automaton. An ether is a periodic pattern of cells that arises in some cellular automata from almost all random initial configurations. In this thesis, the formalism is developed in detail and then applied to the problem of ether formation. For the elementary cellular automaton Rule 54, a partial result is proved: There is a fragment of the ether that arises with probability 1 from every random initial configuration and is propagated with probability 1 to any later time. This is a strong argument that the ether under Rule 54 indeed arises from almost all input configurations.

Expressiveness of Elementary Cellular Automata

We investigate expressiveness, a parameter of one-dimensional cellular automata, in the context of simulated biological systems. The development of elementary cellular automata is interpreted in terms of biological systems, and biologically inspired parameters for biodiversity are applied to the configurations of cellular automata. This article contains a survey of the Elementary Cellular Automata in terms of their expressiveness and an evaluation whether expressiveness is a meaningful term in the context of simulated biology.

Gliders and Ether in Rule 54

This is a study of the one-dimensional elementary cellular automaton rule 54 in the new formalism of "flexible time". We derive algebraic expressions for groups of several cells and their evolution in time. With them we can describe the behaviour of simple periodic patterns like the ether and gliders in an efficient way. We use that to look into their behaviour in detail and find general formulas that characterise them.
