The Tunneling Effect for Schrödinger operators on a Vector Bundle

In the semiclassical limit h to 0, we analyze a class of self-adjoint Schrödinger operators H_h = h^2 L + h W + V id_E acting on sections of a vector bundle E over an oriented Riemannian manifold M where L is a Laplace type operator, W is an endomorphism field and the potential energy V has non-degenerate minima at a finite number of points m_1, ... m_r in M, called potential wells. Using quasimodes of WKB-type near m_j for eigenfunctions associated with the low lying eigenvalues of H_h, we analyze the tunneling effect, i.e. the splitting between low lying eigenvalues, which e.g. arises in certain symmetric configurations. Technically, we treat the coupling between different potential wells by an interaction matrix and we consider the case of a single minimal geodesic (with respect to the associated Agmon metric) connecting two potential wells and the case of a submanifold of minimal geodesics of dimension l + 1. This dimension l determines the polynomial prefactor for exponentially small eigenvalue splitting.

Optimal control for the thin-film equation: Convergence of a multi-parameter approach to track state constraints avoiding degeneracies

We consider an optimal control problem subject to the thin-film equation which is deduced from the Navier--Stokes equation. The PDE constraint lacks well-posedness for general right-hand sides due to possible degeneracies; state constraints are used to circumvent this problematic issue and to ensure well-posedness, and the rigorous derivation of necessary optimality conditions for the optimal control problem is performed. A multi-parameter regularization is considered which addresses both, the possibly degenerate term in the equation and the state constraint, and convergence is shown for vanishing regularization parameters by decoupling both effects. The fully regularized optimal control problem allows for practical simulations which are provided, including the control of a dewetting scenario, to evidence the need of the state constraint, and to motivate proper scalings of involved regularization and numerical parameters.

Agmon-type estimates for a class of jump processes

In the limit epsilon to 0 we analyze the generators H_epsilon of families of reversible jump processes in R^d associated with a class of symmetric non-local Dirichlet-forms and show exponential decay of the eigenfunctions. The exponential rate function is a Finsler distance, given as solution of a certain eikonal equation. Fine results are sensitive to the rate function being C^2 or just Lipschitz. Our estimates are analog to the semi-classical Agmon estimates for differential operators of second order. They generalize and strengthen previous results on the lattice epsilon Z^d. Although our final interest is in the (sub)stochastic jump process, technically this is a pure analysis paper, inspired by PDE techniques.
