ChiliPDF: Chebyshev Interpolation for Parton Distributions

Parton distribution functions (PDFs) are an essential ingredient for theoretical predictions at colliders. Since their exact form is unknown, their handling and delivery for practical applications relies on approximate numerical methods. We discuss the implementation of PDFs based on a global interpolation in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. We demonstrate that this allows for significantly higher numerical accuracy at lower computational cost compared with local interpolation methods such as splines. Whilst the numerical inaccuracy of currently used local methods can become a nontrivial limitation in high-precision applications, in our approach it is negligible for practical purposes. This holds in particular for differentiation and for Mellin convolution with kernels that have end point singularities. We illustrate our approach for these and other important numerical operations, including DGLAP evolution, and find that they are performed accurately and fast. Our results are implemented in the C++ library ChiliPDF.

Double parton distributions in the pion from lattice QCD

We perform a lattice study of double parton distributions in the pion, using the relationship between their Mellin moments and pion matrix elements of two local currents. A good statistical signal is obtained for almost all relevant Wick contractions. We investigate correlations in the spatial distribution of two partons in the pion, as well as correlations involving the parton polarisation. The patterns we observe depend significantly on the quark mass. We investigate the assumption that double parton distributions approximately factorise into a convolution of single parton distributions.

Gluons and sea quarks in the proton at low scales

We study the evolution of parton distributions down to low scales by considering several of their Mellin moments. For the initial conditions, we use a broad array of current parton density fits. Confirming earlier findings in the literature, we conclude that current determinations of parton distributions are incompatible with the idea that gluon or antiquark densities are generated by purely perturbative radiation as it is encoded in the DGLAP evolution equations.

Sum rule improved double parton distributions in position space

Models for double parton distributions that are realistic and consistent with theoretical constraints are crucial for a reliable description of double parton scattering. We show how an ansatz that has the correct behaviour in the limit of small transverse distance between the partons can be improved step by step, such as to fulfil the sum rules for double parton distributions with an accuracy around 10%.

Double parton scattering for perturbative transverse momenta

The cross section for transverse momentum dependent double parton scattering involves transverse momentum dependent double parton distributions (DTMDs). In the region of perturbative transverse momentum the DTMDs can be matched onto collinear double parton distributions. We present the framework and results for this matching, as well as the evolution equations for DTMDs in the region of large distance between the two partons. We discuss explicit results for one-loop matching coefficients and evolution kernels.

Elements of a theory for multiparton interactions in QCD

We perform a detailed investigation of multiple hard interactions in hadron-hadron collisions. We discuss the space-time, spin and color structure of multiple interactions, classify different contributions according to their power behavior and provide several elements required for establishing all-order factorization. This also allows us to analyze the structure of Sudakov logarithms in double hard scattering. We show how multiparton distributions can be constrained by lattice calculations, by connecting them with generalized parton distributions, and by calculating their behavior at large transverse parton momenta.

The RHIC Cold QCD Plan for 2017 to 2023: A Portal to the EIC

The exploration of the fundamental structure of strongly interacting matter has always thrived on the complementarity of lepton scattering and purely hadronic probes. As the community eagerly anticipates a future electron ion collider (EIC) in the U.S., an outstanding scientific opportunity remains to complete "must-do" measurements in p+p and p+A physics in the years preceding the EIC. As we describe in this document, these measurements will be essential to fully realize the scientific promise of the EIC by provid-ing a comprehensive set of measurements in hadronic collisions that, when combined with data from the EIC, will establish the validity and limits of factorization and universality. The outlined program will on the one hand lay the groundwork for the EIC, both scientifically and in terms of refining the experimental requirements for the physics program at the EIC, and thus be the natural next step on the path towards an electron-ion collider. On the other hand, while much of the physics in this program is unique to proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions and offers discovery potential on its own, when combined with data from the EIC it will provide a broad foundation to a deeper understanding of fundamental QCD.

Cancellation of Glauber gluon exchange in the double Drell-Yan process

An essential part of any factorisation proof is the demonstration that the exchange of Glauber gluons cancels for the considered observable. We show this cancellation at all orders for double Drell-Yan production (the double parton scattering process in which a pair of electroweak gauge bosons is produced) both for the integrated cross section and for the cross section differential in the transverse boson momenta. In the process of constructing this proof, we also revisit and clarify some issues regarding the Glauber cancellation argument and its relation to the rest of the factorisation proof for the single Drell-Yan process.

The RHIC SPIN Program: Achievements and Future Opportunities

Time and again, spin has been a key element in the exploration of fundamental physics. Spin-dependent observables have often revealed deficits in the assumed theoretical framework and have led to novel developments and concepts. Spin is exploited in many parity-violating experiments searching for physics beyond the Standard Model or studying the nature of nucleon-nucleon forces. The RHIC spin program plays a special role in this grand scheme: it uses spin to study how a complex many-body system such as the proton arises from the dynamics of QCD. Many exciting results from RHIC spin have emerged to date, most of them from RHIC running after the 2007 Long Range Plan. In this document we present highlights from the RHIC program to date and lay out the roadmap for the significant advances that are possible with future RHIC running.

Correlations in double parton distributions: effects of evolution

We numerically investigate the impact of scale evolution on double parton distributions, which are needed to compute multiple hard scattering processes. Assuming correlations between longitudinal and transverse variables or between the parton spins to be present at a low scale, we study how they are affected by evolution to higher scales, i.e. by repeated parton emission. We find that generically evolution tends to wash out correlations, but with a speed that may be slow or fast depending on kinematics and on the type of correlation. Nontrivial parton correlations may hence persist in double parton distributions at the high scales relevant for hard scattering processes.

Progress in Double Parton Scattering Studies

An overview of theoretical and experimental progress in double parton scattering (DPS) is presented. The theoretical topics cover factorization in DPS, models for double parton distributions and DPS in charm production and nuclear collisions. On the experimental side, CMS results for dijet and double J/ψ production, in light of DPS, as well as first results for the 4-jet channel are presented. ALICE reports on a study of open charm and J/ψ multiplicity dependence.

Positivity bounds on double parton distributions

Double hard scattering in proton-proton collisions is described in terms of double parton distributions. We derive bounds on these distributions that follow from their interpretation as probability densities, taking into account all possible spin correlations between two partons in an unpolarized proton. These bounds constrain the size of the polarized distributions and can for instance be used to set upper limits on the effects of spin correlations in double hard scattering. We investigate the stability of the bounds under leading-order DGLAP evolution to higher scales.

Angular correlations in the double Drell-Yan process

We study the impact of parton correlations on the double Drell-Yan process, i.e. on the production of two electroweak gauge bosons by double parton scattering in a single proton-proton collision. Spin correlations between two partons in a proton are shown to change the overall rate of the process and to induce characteristic angular correlations between the decay leptons of the two gauge bosons.

Theoretical considerations on multiparton interactions in QCD

We investigate several ingredients for a theory of multiple hard scattering in hadron-hadron collisions. Issues discussed include the space-time structure of multiple interactions, their power behavior, spin and color correlations, interference terms, scale evolution and Sudakov logarithms. We discuss possibilities to constrain multiparton distributions by lattice calculations and by connecting them with generalized parton distributions. We show that the behavior of two-parton distributions at small interparton distances leads to problems with ultraviolet divergences and with double counting, which requires modification of the presently available theoretical framework.

Multiple interactions and generalized parton distributions

Multiple parton interactions in a single proton-proton collision are expected to play an important role for many observables at LHC. To a large part their phenomenological description relies on rather simple and physically intuitive assumptions. We report on an investigation of multiple hard interactions in QCD, which aims at identifying to which extent this simple description arises from theory and where it needs to be extended. An approximate connection with generalized parton distributions may help elucidate some aspects of multiple-interaction dynamics.

The transverse spin structure of the pion at short distances

We study the form factors of the quark tensor currents in the pion at large squared momentum transfer Q^2. It turns out that certain form factors can be evaluated using collinear factorization, whereas others receive important contributions from the end-point regions of the longitudinal quark momenta in the pion. We derive simple analytic expressions for the dominant terms at high Q^2 and illustrate them numerically.

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at small transverse momentum

We study the cross section for one-particle inclusive deep inelastic scattering off the nucleon for low transverse momentum of the detected hadron. We decompose the cross section in terms of structure functions and calculate them at tree level in terms of transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. Our results are complete in the one-photon exchange approximation at leading and first subleading twist accuracy, with both beam and target polarization.

Triple gauge couplings in polarised e-e+ -> W-W+ and their measurement using optimal observables

The sensitivity of optimal integrated observables to electroweak triple gauge couplings is investigated for the process e-e+ -> W-W+ -> 4 fermions at future linear colliders. By a suitable reparameterisation of the couplings we achieve that all 28 coupling parameters have uncorrelated statistical errors and are naturally normalised for this process. Discrete symmetry properties simplify the analysis and allow checks on the stability of numerical results. We investigate the sensitivity to the couplings of the normalised event distribution and the additional constraints that can be obtained from the total rate. Particular emphasis is put on the gain in sensitivity one can achieve with longitudinal beam polarisation. We also point out questions that may best be settled with transversely polarised beams. In particular we find that with purely longitudinal polarisation one linear combination of coupling parameters is hardly measurable by means of the normalised event distribution.
