Signatures of Majorana fermions in hybrid normal-superconducting rings

We investigate persistent currents in metallic rings interrupted by a Coulomb blockaded topological superconducting segment. We show that the presence of Majorana bound states in the superconductor is reflected in the emergence of an h/e harmonics in the persistent current, whose sign is determined by the fermion parity of the superconductor. The Majorana bound states further render the current finite at zero flux, nevertheless the resulting peculiar symmetry of the persistent current is compatible with a free energy that is even in time-reversal symmetry breaking fields. These unique features of the persistent currents are robust against disorder and provide unambiguous signatures of the presence of Majorana fermions.

Marginal topological properties of graphene: a comparison with topological insulators

The electronic structures of graphene systems and topological insulators have closely-related features, such as quantized Berry phase and zero-energy edge states. The reason for these analogies is that in both systems there are two relevant orbital bands, which generate the pseudo-spin degree of freedom, and, less obviously, there is a correspondence between the valley degree of freedom in graphene and electron spin in topological insulators. Despite the similarities, there are also several important distinctions, both for the bulk topological properties and for their implications for the edge states -- primarily due to the fundamental difference between valley and spin. In view of their peculiar band structure features, gapped graphene systems should be properly characterized as marginal topological insulators, distinct from either the trivial insulators or the true topological insulators.

Optimal energy quanta to current conversion

We present a microscopic discussion of a nano-sized structure which uses the quantization of energy levels and the physics of single charge Coulomb interaction to achieve an optimal conversion of heat flow to directed current. In our structure the quantization of energy levels and the Coulomb blockade lead to the transfer of quantized packets of energy from a hot source into an electric conductor to which it is capacitively coupled. The fluctuation generated transfer of a single energy quantum translates into the directed motion of a single electron. Thus in our structure the ratio of the charge current to the heat current is determined by the ratio of the charge quantum to the energy quantum. An important novel aspect of our approach is that the direction of energy flow and the direction of electron motion are decoupled.

Mesoscopic Coulomb drag, broken detailed balance and fluctuation relations

When a biased conductor is put in proximity with an unbiased conductor a drag current can be induced in the absence of detailed balance. This is known as the Coulomb drag effect. However, even in this situation far away from equilibrium where detailed balance is explicitly broken, theory predicts that fluctuation relations are satisfied. This surprising effect has, to date, not been confirmed experimentally. Here we propose a system consisting of a capacitively coupled double quantum dot where the nonlinear fluctuation relations are verified in the absence of detailed balance.

Fluctuation relations without micro-reversibility for two-terminal conductors

In linear transport, the fluctuation-dissipation theorem relates equilibrium current correlations to the linear conductance coefficient. Theory and experiment have shown that in small electrical conductors the non-linear I-V-characteristic of two-terminal conductor exhibits terms which are asymmetric in magnetic field and thus micro-reversibility is manifestly broken. We discuss a non-equilibrium fluctuation dissipation theorem which is not based on micro-reversibility. It connects the antisymmetric nonlinear conductance with the third cumulant of equilibrium current fluctuations and a noise term that is proportional to temperature, magnetic field and voltage.

Interaction induced edge channel equilibration

The electronic distribution functions of two Coulomb coupled chiral edge states forming a quasi-1D system with broken translation invariance are found using the equation of motion approach. We find that relaxation and thereby energy exchange between the two edge states is determined by the shot noise of the edge states generated at a quantum point contact (QPC). In close vicinity to the QPC, we derive analytic expressions for the distribution functions. We further give an iterative procedure with which we can compute numerically the distribution functions arbitrarily far away from the QPC. Our results are compared with recent experiments of Le Sueur et al..

Universal detector efficiency of a mesoscopic capacitor

We investigate theoretically a novel type of high frequency quantum detector based on the mesoscopic capacitor recently realized by Gabelli et al., [Science {\bf 313}, 499 (2006)], which consists of a quantum dot connected via a single channel quantum point contact to a single lead. We show that the state of a double quantum dot charge qubit capacitively coupled to this detector can be read out in the GHz frequency regime with near quantum limited efficiency. To leading order, the quantum efficiency is found to be universal owing to the universality of the charge relaxation resistance of the mesoscopic capacitor.

Decoherence and Full Counting Statistics in a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

We investigate the Full Counting Statistics of an electrical Mach-Zehnder interferometer penetrated by an Aharonov-Bohm flux, and in the presence of a classical fluctuating potential. Of interest is the suppression of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the distribution function of the transmitted charge. For a Gaussian fluctuating field we calculate the first three cumulants. The fluctuating potential causes a modulation of the conductance leading in the third cumulant to a term cubic in voltage and to a contribution correlating modulation of current and noise. In the high voltage regime we present an approximation of the generating function.

Interaction induced magnetic field asymmetry of nonlinear mesoscopic electrical transport

We demonstrate that the nonlinear I-V characteristics of a two probe conductor is not an even function of magnetic field. While the conductance of a two-probe conductor is even in magnetic field, we find that already the contributions to the current which are second order in voltage, are in general not even. This implies a departure from the Onsager microreversibility principle already in the weakly nonlinear regime. Interestingly, the effect that we find is due to the Coulomb interaction. A measurement of the magnetic field asymmetry can be used to determine the effective interaction strength. As a generic example, we discuss the I-V characteristics of a chaotic quantum dot. The ensemble averaged I-V of such a cavity is linear: nonlinearities are due to quantum interference. Consequently, phase-breaking reduces the asymmetry. We support this statement with a calculation which treats inelastic scattering with the help of a voltage probe.

Charge fluctuation induced dephasing in a gated mesoscopic interferometer

The reduction of the amplitude of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a ballistic one-channel mesoscopic interferometer due to charge fluctuations is investigated. In the arrangement considered the interferometer has four terminals and is coupled to macroscopic metallic side-gates. The Aharonov-Bohm oscillation amplitude is calculated as a function of temperature and the strength of coupling between the ring and the side-gates. The resulting dephasing rate is linear in temperature in agreement with recent experiments. Our derivation emphasizes the relationship between dephasing, ac-transport and charge fluctuations.
