A proposal for the algebra of a novel noncommutative spacetime

We investigate the quantum structure of spacetime at fundamental scales via a novel, Lorentz-invariant noncommutative coordinate framework. Building on insights from noncommutative geometry, spectral theory, and algebraic quantum field theory, we systematically construct a quantum spacetime algebra whose geometric and causal properties are derived from first principles. Using the Weyl algebra formalism and the Gelfand--Naimark--Segal (GNS) construction, we rigorously define operator-valued coordinates that respect Lorentz symmetry and encode quantum gravitational effects through nontrivial commutation relations. We show how the emergent quantum spacetime exhibits minimal length effects, which deliver both classical Minkowski distances and quantum corrections proportional to the Planck length squared. Furthermore, we establish that noncommutativity respects a fuzzy form of causality, where the quantum causal structure gives back the light cone in the classical limit, vanishing for spacelike separations and encoding a time orientation for timelike intervals.

Cosmological Perturbations and Invariant Observables in Geodesic Lightcone Coordinates

We consider a recent approach to the construction of gauge-invariant relational observables in gravity in the context of cosmological perturbation theory. These observables are constructed using a field-dependent coordinate system, which we take to be geodesic lightcone coordinates. We show that the observables are gauge-independent in the fully non-linear theory, and that they have the expected form when one adopts the geodesic lightcone gauge for the metric. We give explicit expressions for the Sasaki-Mukhanov variable at linear order, and the Hubble rate -- as measured both by geodesic observers and by observers co-moving with the inflaton -- to second order. Moreover, we show that the well-known linearised equations of motion for the Sasaki-Mukhanov variable and the scalar constraint variables follow from the gauge-invariant Einstein's equations.

On well-posedness and algebraic type of the five-dimensional charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta

We study various mathematical aspects of the charged rotating black hole with two equal-magnitude angular momenta in five dimensions. We introduce a coordinate system that is regular on the horizon and in which Einstein-Maxwell equations reduce to an autonomous system of ODEs. Employing Bondi and Kruskal-like coordinates, we analyze the geometric regularity of the black hole metric at infinity and the horizon, respectively, and the well-posedness of the corresponding boundary value problem. We also study the algebraic types of the electromagnetic and curvature tensors. While outside the horizon the electromagnetic and Ricci tensors are of type D, the Weyl tensor is algebraically general. The Weyl tensor simplifies to type~II on the horizon and type~D on the bifurcation sphere. These results imply inconsistency of the metric with the Kerr--Schild form with a geodesic Kerr-Schild vector. This feature is shared by the four-dimensional Kerr-Newman metric and the vacuum Myers-Perry or charged Schwarzschild-Tangherlini geometries in arbitrary dimension, but hence not by the black hole we have considered here.

All-order existence of and recursion relations for the operator product expansion in Yang-Mills theory

We prove the existence of the operator product expansion (OPE) in Euclidean Yang-Mills theories as a short-distance expansion, to all orders in perturbation theory. We furthermore show that the Ward identities of the underlying gauge theory are reflected in the OPE; especially, the OPE of an arbitrary number of gauge-invariant composite operators only involves gauge-invariant composite operators. Moreover, we derive recursion relations which allow to construct the OPE coefficients, the quantum BRST differential and the quantum antibracket order by order in perturbation theory, starting from the known free-theory objects. These relations are completely finite from the start, and do not need any further renormalisation as is usually the case in other approaches. Our results underline the importance of the OPE as a general structure underlying quantum field theories. The proofs are obtained within the framework of the Wilson-Wegner-Polchinski-Wetterich renormalisation group flow equations, and generalise similar results recently obtained for scalar field theories [J. Holland and S. Hollands, Commun. Math. Phys. 336 (2015) 1555; J. Holland and S. Hollands, J. Math. Phys. 56 (2015) 122303]. Combining their results with our recursion formula, we also obtain associativity of the OPE coefficients.

Deformations of Supergravity and Supersymmetry Anomalies

We present a BRST analysis of supersymmetry anomalies of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories with anomalous R symmetry. To this end, we consider the coupling of the matter theory to classical $\mathcal{N} = 1$ new minimal supergravity. We point out that a supersymmetry anomaly cocycle associated to the $\mathrm{U}(1){}_\mathrm{R}$ field does exist for this theory. It is non-trivial in the space of supergravity fields (and ghosts), but it becomes BRST-exact in the functional space that includes antifields. Equivalently, the $\mathrm{U}(1){}_\mathrm{R}$ supersymmetry anomaly cocycle vanishes "on-shell". It is therefore removable. However, to remove it -- precisely because it is not trivial in the smaller space of fields -- one needs to deform the supergravity BRST operator. This deformation is triggered, at first order in the anomaly coefficient, by a local operator $S_1$ of ghost number 1. We give a cohomological characterization of $S_1$ and compute it in full detail. At higher orders in the anomaly coefficient, we expect a priori that further deformations of the BRST rules are necessary.

All-order bounds for correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators in Yang-Mills theory

We give a complete, self-contained, and mathematically rigorous proof that Euclidean Yang-Mills theories are perturbatively renormalisable, in the sense that all correlation functions of arbitrary composite local operators fulfil suitable Ward identities. Our proof treats rigorously both all ultraviolet and infrared problems of the theory and provides, in the end, detailed analytical bounds on the correlation functions of an arbitrary number of composite local operators. These bounds are formulated in terms of certain weighted spanning trees extending between the insertion points of these operators. Our proofs are obtained within the framework of the Wilson-Wegner-Polchinski-Wetterich renormalisation group flow equations, combined with estimation techniques based on tree structures. Compared with previous mathematical treatments of massless theories without local gauge invariance [R. Guida and Ch. Kopper, arXiv:1103.5692; J. Holland, S. Hollands, and Ch. Kopper, Commun. Math. Phys. 342 (2016) 385] our constructions require several technical advances; in particular, we need to fully control the BRST invariance of our correlation functions.

Mode-sum construction of the covariant graviton two-point function in the Poincaré patch of de Sitter space

We construct the graviton two-point function for a two-parameter family of linear covariant gauges in n-dimensional de Sitter space. The construction is performed via the mode-sum method in the Bunch-Davies vacuum in the Poincaré patch, and a Fierz-Pauli mass term is introduced to regularize the infrared (IR) divergences. The resulting two-point function is de Sitter-invariant, and free of IR divergences in the massless limit (for a certain range of parameters) though analytic continuation with respect to the mass for the pure-gauge sector of the two-point function is necessary for this result. This general result agrees with the propagator obtained by analytic continuation from the sphere [Phys. Rev. D 34, 3670 (1986); Class. Quant. Grav. 18, 4317 (2001)]. However, if one starts with strictly zero mass theory, the IR divergences are absent only for a specific value of one of the two parameters, with the other parameter left generic. These findings agree with recent calculations in the Landau (exact) gauge [J. Math. Phys. 53, 122502 (2012)], where IR divergences do appear in the spin-two (tensor) part of the two-point function. However, we find the strength (including the sign) of the IR divergence to be different from the one found in this reference.

Quantum gravitational corrections for spinning particles

We calculate the quantum corrections to the gauge-invariant gravitational potentials of spinning particles in flat space, induced by loops of both massive and massless matter fields of various types. While the corrections to the Newtonian potential induced by massless conformal matter for spinless particles are well-known, and the same corrections due to massless minimally coupled scalars [Class. Quant. Grav. 27 (2010) 245008], massless non-conformal scalars [Phys. Rev. D 87 (2013) 104027] and massive scalars, fermions and vector bosons [Phys. Rev. D 91 (2015) 064047] have been recently derived, spinning particles receive additional corrections which are the subject of the present work. We give both fully analytic results valid for all distances from the particle, and present numerical results as well as asymptotic expansions. At large distances from the particle, the corrections due to massive fields are exponentially suppressed in comparison to the corrections from massless fields, as one would expect. However, a surprising result of our analysis is that close to the particle itself, on distances comparable to the Compton wavelength of the massive fields running in the loops, these corrections can be enhanced with respect to the massless case.

Mapping AdS to dS spaces and back

We derive a map between Einstein spaces of positive and negative curvature, including scalar matter. Starting from a space of positive curvature with some dimensions compactified on a sphere and analytically continuing the number of compact dimensions, we obtain a space of negative curvature with a compact hyperbolic subspace, and vice versa. Prime examples of such spaces are de Sitter (dS) and anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, as well as black hole spacetimes with (A)dS asymptotics and perturbed versions thereof, which play an important role in holography. This map extends work done by Caldarelli et al., who map asymptotically AdS spaces to Ricci-flat ones. A remarkable result is that the boundary of asymptotically AdS spaces is mapped to a brane in the bulk of de Sitter, and perturbations near the AdS boundary are sourced by a stress tensor confined to this brane. We also calculate the Brown-York stress tensor for the perturbed AdS metric, which turns out to be the negative of the stress tensor on the de Sitter brane. The map can also be used as a solution generator, and we obtain a Kerr/AdS solution with hyperbolic horizon from a known Kerr/dS one.

Mode-sum construction of the two-point functions for the Stueckelberg vector fields in the Poincaré patch of de Sitter space

We perform canonical quantization of the Stueckelberg Lagrangian for massive vector fields in the conformally flat patch of de Sitter space in the Bunch-Davies vacuum and find their Wightman two-point functions by the mode-sum method. We discuss the zero-mass limit of these two-point functions and their limits where the Stueckelberg parameter $ξ$ tends to zero or infinity. It is shown that our results reproduce the standard flat-space propagator in the appropriate limit. We also point out that the classic work of Allen and Jacobson for the two-point function of the Proca field and a recent work by Tsamis and Woodard for that of the transverse vector field are two limits of our two-point function, one for $ξ\to \infty$ and the other for $ξ\to 0$. Thus, these two works are consistent with each other, contrary to the claim by the latter authors.

Riemann correlator in de Sitter including loop corrections from conformal fields

The Riemann correlator with appropriately raised indices characterizes in a gauge-invariant way the quantum metric fluctuations around de Sitter spacetime including loop corrections from matter fields. Specializing to conformal fields and employing a method that selects the de Sitter-invariant vacuum in the Poincaré patch, we obtain the exact result for the Riemann correlator through order $H^4/m_\mathrm{p}^4$. The result is expressed in a manifestly de Sitter-invariant form in terms of maximally symmetric bitensors. Its behavior for both short and long distances (sub- and superhorizon scales) is analyzed in detail. Furthermore, by carefully taking the flat-space limit, the explicit result for the Riemann correlator for metric fluctuations around Minkowki spacetime is also obtained. Although the main focus is on free scalar fields (our calculation corresponds then to one-loop order in the matter fields), the result for general conformal field theories is also derived.

Schwinger effect in de Sitter space

We consider Schwinger pair production in 1+1 dimensional de Sitter space, filled with a constant electric field $E$. This can be thought of as a model for describing false vacuum decay beyond the semiclassical approximation, where pairs of a quantum field $ϕ$ of mass $m$ and charge $e$ play the role of vacuum bubbles. We find that the adiabatic "in" vacuum associated with the flat chart develops a space-like expectation value for the current $J$, which manifestly breaks the de Sitter invariance of the background fields. We derive a simple expression for $J(E)$, showing that both "upward" and "downward" tunneling contribute to the build-up of the current. For heavy fields, with $m^2\gg eE,H^2$, the current is exponentially suppressed, in agreement with the results of semiclassical instanton methods. Here $H$ is the inverse de Sitter radius. On the other hand, light fields with $ m \ll H$ lead to a phenomenon of infrared hyperconductivity, where a very small electric field $mH \lesssim eE \ll H^2$ leads to a very large current $J \sim H^3 /E$. We also show that all Hadamard states for $ϕ$ necessarily break de Sitter invariance. Finally, we comment on the role of initial conditions, and "persistence of memory" effects.

The Weyl tensor correlator in cosmological spacetimes

We give a general expression for the Weyl tensor two-point function in a general Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We work in reduced phase space for the perturbations, i.e., quantize only the dynamical degrees of freedom without adding any gauge-fixing term. The general formula is illustrated by a calculation in slow-roll single-field inflation to first order in the slow-roll parameters $ε$ and $δ$, and the result is shown to have the correct de Sitter limit as $ε, δ\to 0$. Furthermore, it is seen that the Weyl tensor correlation function does not suffer from infrared divergences, unlike the two-point functions of the metric and scalar field perturbations. Lastly, we show how to recover the usual tensor power spectrum from the Weyl tensor correlation function.

Fully renormalized stress tensor correlator in flat space

We present a general procedure to renormalize the stress tensor two-point correlation function on a Minkowski background in position space. The method is shown in detail for the case of a free massive scalar field in the standard Minkowski vacuum state, and explicit expressions are given for the counterterms and finite parts, which are in full accordance with earlier results for the massless case. For the general case in position space, only regularized --- but not renormalized --- results have been obtained previously. After a Fourier transformation to momentum space, we also check agreement with a previous calculation there. We generalize our results to general Hadamard states. Furthermore, the proposed procedure can presumably be generalized to the important case of an inflationary spacetime background, where the transition to momentum space is in general not possible.

Nonperturbative semiclassical stability of de Sitter spacetime for small metric deviations

We consider the linearized semiclassical Einstein equations for small deviations around de Sitter spacetime including the vacuum polarization effects of conformal fields. Employing the method of order reduction, we find the exact solutions for general metric perturbations (of scalar, vector and tensor type). Our exact (nonperturbative) solutions show clearly that in this case de Sitter is stable with respect to small metric deviations and a late-time attractor. Furthermore, they also reveal a breakdown of perturbative solutions for a sufficiently long evolution inside the horizon. Our results are valid for any conformal theory, even self-interacting ones with arbitrarily strong coupling.

One-loop gravitational wave spectrum in de Sitter spacetime

The two-point function for tensor metric perturbations around de Sitter spacetime including one-loop corrections from massless conformally coupled scalar fields is calculated exactly. We work in the Poincaré patch (with spatially flat sections) and employ dimensional regularization for the renormalization process. Unlike previous studies we obtain the result for arbitrary time separations rather than just equal times. Moreover, in contrast to existing results for tensor perturbations, ours is manifestly invariant with respect to the subgroup of de Sitter isometries corresponding to a simultaneous time translation and rescaling of the spatial coordinates. Having selected the right initial state for the interacting theory via an appropriate iεprescription is crucial for that. Finally, we show that although the two-point function is a well-defined spacetime distribution, the equal-time limit of its spatial Fourier transform is divergent. Therefore, contrary to the well-defined distribution for arbitrary time separations, the power spectrum is strictly speaking ill-defined when loop corrections are included.
